  • How to Apply a Stained Finish to Highly Figured Hardwood
    How to Apply This Finish
    1. Sand the project up through the grits until at least 320-grit
    a. It is a good idea to sand pieces that will be hard to reach before assembly.
    2. Wipe the project with mineral spirits to check for glue splotches. Sand the glue away if found.
    3. Apply a coat of aniline dye mixed with water to the surface. Flood it on with a staining sponge, and wipe it off with shop towels
    4. Apply a sealer coat (Zinsser Sealcoat) of a shellac-based finish by wiping: flooding the surface with finish and wiping it off.
    5. If you have any nail holes, cracks or defects in the wood, fill them now with a wood filler putty that matches the color of the stained wood (sand smooth)
    6. Apply at least two coats of a wipe-on polyurethane
    7. Optional: After the finish has cured for 72 hours, apply a coat of high-quality paste wax and then polish it off.

Another tip....after you have applied the stain and let it sit, come back and sand the project until the light areas of the wood have no more stain. The grain is a soft wood that will accept more of the stain deeper into the wood than the harder light areas. This will give your overall wood a lighter look, while allowing the softer grain areas to have a darker color, once you have applied a good top coat.

How do you sand filled nail holes after it’s stained? Honest question. Seems like you would sand some of the stained areas without fill also.

Is this a good process for sapele?

Yes, this process would work fine with sapele.

Sanding to 600 is ridiculous... raise the grain with water and sand it back before the dye... you shouldn't be allowed to buy figured lumber if you patching nail holes.

I disagree with him about using fine sandpaper. Sanding the wood with 600 grade is going to close the pores where the stain can't soak in properly. Sand your topcoat not the the wood to a highly smooth finish
