Embroidery Machine Disaster? Brother Skitch App Connection FAIL!

  • High-tech nightmare? I currently cannot use my new Brother Skitch PP1 Embroidery Machine because it won't connect with the Artspira app. I've tried just about everything and this is an EPIC FAIL. Did I just waste money buying this thing? This is why it's dangerous to make sewing machines & tech that relies on wireless connectivity and/or runs solely on an app.

    11/15/23 UPDATE: Brother has just announced a change to the Artspira app!
    "Some of the feedback around Artspira was the inability to import your own designs in the FREE version of the app.
    We’ve heard from you and are actively updating Artspira to ensure all users can access this feature.
    So, starting on November 30th, users of the Free version of Artspira will be allowed to import any design and store up to 20 designs in Artspira (you can add and remove the 20 designs as you wish!).
    Artspira+ Subscription Plan users, the Paid version of Artspira, can store and import up to 100 designs. Basically, more storage!"

    *UPDATE:* I finally got this thing to connect! Here's what I did... if you're using an iPhone/iPad, go into your device's Bluetooth settings and it will show which devices it has historically paired. Click on the blue "i" on the right hand side, and "Forget This Device." Then go back into the Artspira app and connect/pair like it's the first time doing it. This is how I was able to get the machine to connect after more than 30 failed attempts. Still kind of BS in my opinion, because I haven't had this issue with other Bluetooth tech and it will be extremely annoying if I have to constantly do this. The app developers need to improve this for users. I am going to leave this video up because I suspect other Skitch owners are likely going to encounter the same issue and hopefully this can help as a resource, My experience with the Artspira app overall has been pretty negative.
    Before I found this solution, I did live chat with Brother Support and they gave me some generic links that weren't helpful and then "escalated" my case to a specialist. They are supposed to reach out via email. I am going to bust out the PE900 and test it out with app connectivity as well.

      I did this too, I had to reconnect it 3 times within 2 days. It’s was returned on the third day. 🤣

      Having to forget is typical with Bluetooth. I "think" it due to the address used gets reused and it wants to use that same one that was used in the past. It's not the device but the Bluetooth system itself.

    Thank you so much for being our tester. :) I'm not inclined to buy something that I can't use without paying monthly to use it after buying it already (by choice)...Quicken has me already and I resent it.

    This was exactly my concern….not that I would have ever been a purchaser of this machine, but only being able to use with an app is just a non starter.

    JEN, do you have a treadle machine for a backup or just because?? I'd like to see a video/report on "Old Reliable"......Thrift shops/estate/garage sales are a good place to look. They're surprisingly inexpensive

      I had a 1963 Singer of my mom's that did embroidery. It had disks you inserted of the designs. And they were MUCH better than what this app offers. 😂

    I'm not going to lie, Cricut sometimes has paring issues with their online software connecting to the machine. I've never not have it run but connecting can something take a hot minute before the machine to connect. There is however a desktop interface that I think ACTUALLY sends the cut/draw file to the machine from the online app first to the drivers in the machine to "runs" the files instead of the app driving the machine.
    But 100% internet down means I can't start the process.
    If this Embroidery Machine is using the app as an external programming (meaning it's not built into the machine to run the file) that is a BIG ooof. The room for connection error is way bigger! I hope that's not the case and it's just having a read/certification problem for connecting to start the process.

    Hi. Thank you for the review. Someone asked me about it yesterday. I politely said it's a hard No for me. The only way to use it is with the app? What if your internet goes out? I'll keep using my PE770. Thanks!

    Oh poop Jen. This is always going to be the issue with app based machines I always have issues with my cricut maker so it is an expensive paperweight 😵‍💫 glad to see you managed to get it to connect in end. My advoce would of been to delete app and reinstall no clue if would of helped x

    Wow, I hope this problem doesn’t keep happening to you.
    I want to get a Brother Scan n Cut - thinking in a few months. But this machine running on the app worries me that Brother will go to this with the next iteration of the SnC. I should probably get it sooner rather than later…?

    Wow. That would be so annoying. I was wishing I had the brother 10 needle that works with Bluetooth but I guess I will be happy with the USB method.

    I really appreciate you reporting on this machine. I'm sorry you paid so much for it but you really are doing a great service (as you usually do) educating the public as to the pro and cons (which to my point of view are all cons) of this machine.

    I just got this machine today and was able to do one little thing, then this started, and I've done everything 20+ times too.

    Frustrating! Glad you were able to get it to work. Is there an option for a wired USB connection?

      Nope! Not at all... That's really the bigger issue here. If it had a USB slot and onboard functions, the app/wireless tech would be optional and not a requirement.

    Cricut users have a similar complaint. If Design Space is down, you are dead in the water.

    I just wanted to add I have issues with my cricut on my Samsung tablet I will also turn off Bluetooth and turn it back on or restart my phone because the issue is with the device you are pairing to and too many connections. You need to clear memory and start the phone and sewing machine, thanks for testing this

    Brother does this with the cutters now wont buy another thing from brother. Simple firmware updates with machines would add more features but instead you gave to buy a whole new model. Pay wall to work a machine the app 🗑 cannot not put your own designs unless you use the paid version of the app just sad.

    I pair it and then it disconnects!! I will go to change a hoop and it disconnects! I havent changed or touched anything, it just disconnects. This machine had such potential but the more I use it the more disappointed I get

    Can this machine easily embroider on a baseball cap?
    I know that Brother is now offering a free version of the software app required to operate the Skitch, but there is no guarantee that they will continue to do so.
    Also, I do not have a high opinion of a company who charges for a product and then charges you again for the "privilege " of using the product you have already paid for.
    I have 2 other high end embroidery machines that I purchased from Brother. But if this is the new business model for Brother, I won't be purchasing from them again, eventhough I love the 2 machines I currently have.

    Have you tried restarting your phone sometimes you have to reset the connection between the two and a phone restart will restart that connection It gets stuck somewhere in bluetooth land. Sorry if this comment doesn't make a lot of sense try restarting your phone I'm driving while I'm sending it because I was listening to this video while driving like podcast

    This really stinks. That would be totally annoying to me too. Pay that kind of money and you can't use it really stinks. Maybe just try to turn off the rest of your blue tooth things and see if that helps. Good luck and keep us informed.

    I have spent the last hour trying to get the Skitch to connect using my phone with Artspira. also then tried with my iPad with Artspira. So cannot use the machine. I warn everyone NOT TO BUY the Skitch. it is total garbage. too bad cuz I have a lot of Brother machines that have been wonderful. They really let us down with the Skitch. im so disappointed!!!

    I think you have essentially purchased eWaste. I have strong disdain for devices that rely purely on wireless connections like in the 3D printing world where some printers have no SD card slot or any kind of external media connection, only Wi-Fi. Hopefully it resolves itself for you but I think if I go for an embroidery machine I'll look for one that can at least take a USB stick.

    No way will we buy this machine. It's absolutely crap you have to have wireless and subscribe to an app. The basic offerings look trashy.
    Internet and app problems are too frequent to depend on.
    Brother really went downhill with this machine.
