*What are your thoughts so far on the Brother Skitch and Artspira app?*
*11/15/23 UPDATE:* Brother has just announced a change to the Artspira app!
"Some of the feedback around Artspira was the inability to import your own designs in the FREE version of the app.
We’ve heard from you and are actively updating Artspira to ensure all users can access this feature.
So, starting on November 30th, users of the Free version of Artspira will be allowed to import any design and store up to 20 designs in Artspira (you can add and remove the 20 designs as you wish!).
Artspira+ Subscription Plan users, the Paid version of Artspira, can store and import up to 100 designs. Basically, more storage!"

I think Brother rolled this machine out before they really tested it with real consumers. For instance, the problem with your thread unrolling from the spooler is something the sewing machine industry has fixed by having a vertical spool holder also. Depending on how thread is wound on the spool, will definitely affect how the thread unwinds. Thread that is sort of crisscrossed wound( like the green spool of thread you were using in the video) needs to come off the spool holder in a vertical position so that it does not get tangled or come off unevenly. And sometimes you need to also use a thread net over the spool to help with it unwinding smoothly. The stand alone spool holder you ended up using is a good ‘fix’. I am not an embroiderer but I am a quilter, so I do use a lot of different kinds of thread. Thanks for these reviews. This one was especially helpful. I will wait to see if Brother fixes the problems.

I agree. The app is horrible. I miss the days when you buy an expensive item; the program comes with it. I would rather go back to installing fonts and clip arts via compact discs. Paying monthly for something that isn’t nearly helpful or great; is not worth it. What happened to the one time payment for the program?!

I don't see any reason why any appliance should *need* to be connected to wi-fi in order to work. This is from the consumer's perspective, of course; I understand completely why a manufacturer would want thi$.

I really appreciate your fair and honest reviews on all things you review. I'm interested in a 4 or 6 month review of this machine if you still have it. I probably still wouldn't buy this machine yet. I would like more reviews on it when it's been out for awhile. Thanks for sharing Jen.

I sure am glad you made this video, and especially with your honest thoughts. I would have never thought to just download the app and play with it before buying the whole machine!
I was looking for something to embroider the tags for clothing items. single color thread, but needs to be able to have at least legible detail on a strip of fabric about 1 inch wide. Plus this machine is just beautiful and very compact, and would fit the look of my home-office-textile-factory (very important since I have to live in here).
I'm really not sure if this machine would work for me, the app keeps giving me warnings that the text selection I'm making is too small, which is not really selling it. Sadly the only real test is to get it. I'd say this video was immensely helpful, and I'm glad you decided to keep the skitch so that us small-timers can at least see real reviews of stuff that's out there.

What happens to the machine when Artspira eventually is shut down? I know no one has the answer to this question yet, but it is an import issue companies are having to explore now that everyone is moving to "cloud" storage/apps/physical object running on external software that is not apart of the machine / stored internally.

    • @SewingReport
      @SewingReport  11 месяцев назад +2

Good question... With anything cloud-based or reliant on an app, there is always a risk of the company essentially bricking the product. While Brother is a more established corporation that doesn't seem immediately at risk of closure, they could decide to shut down the Artspira app, change the features and price at any time, or stop supporting updates to certain product models in order to force customers to upgrade to newer versions.

thank you soooo much. I love your content!
its so refreshing to watch a review where the content creator is free to be honest.
So many videos on youtube are from creators who are sponsored by the company and therefore wont tell you the true cons of a machine because they want to continue to get free products from the company in the future
ultimately this may be good for the creator as they get free products while compromising their principles and the company who gets free promotion but for us as the audience/consumer it is bad - as we dont get a true honest picture. its then harder for us to make an informed decision on if a machine is a good for fit for us.
sooo once again thank you. keep up the good work and know that you are appreciated and i think your channel is amazing.

I love your content. I have magnetic hoops for my baby lock Pathfinder and my brother se625. I have the Dime and Honey sew from Amazon. I have every size 5x7, 6x10, 8x8, and 8x12. The Dime I use mostly for quilting and thick towels (8x8 and 8x12.) I use the Honey Sew for everything else (8x12, 6x10, and 5x7); I really never use the hoops that came with the machines. Using them is like floating everything. Those little magnets on the Honey Sew are strong I did get some extras and you can get your item in very tight. I also, like how thin the hoops are it makes so much easier to load your machine. The Price difference between Honey Sew and Dime is around $100.00, I love them I think because the ease of use. May your Days be filled with Good Sewing!!!

I was thinking it may be good for just embroidering on baby stuff. Just hoop a baby shirt upside down, rotate design 180 and go. I have a big solaris machine. I think this little guy would help embroider on projects in tight places as long as other patterns can be transferred...which that seems possible now? What concerns me is nothing works without the app.

I doubt that any of the customer service people have actually used any of the brother machines or have any kind of experience in machine embroidery. their answers are just not answers that experienced embroiderers would give. P.S. hate the app and will not begetting this machine. I got mine PE800 because I have better control, I do wish it was Bluetooth but I do love my machine and am having a blast with it. I made my nieces a bunch of Kpop dolls, they designed the faces, I made my own pattern and the dolls turned out adorable. I even made a doll for my neighbors little girl who just turned 3 and I get a huge kick seeing her carrying it around all the time. ❤

Thank you for this review! I really don't like subscription based products and consumers need to make companies aware. If this machine is controlled through an app, what happens when the company decides to discontinue support? The machine becomes a useless paperweight. I'm looking to purchase my first embroidery machine and it won't be this one.

I think i would be concerned about wifi and the expensive app. I recently purchased singer legacy se300 and they have teamed up with sewnet which means you need to spend on a subscription to get any real use out of it. However it does have usb so i find it good to use and if you into editing you could buy an external programme. There are not many reviews on this machine and i wonder if you would consider doing a review on it? I believe they are bringing out an upgrade which will have wifi and usb capability. Thank you

Good review - terrible machine. LOL. I agree ArtSpira isn’t worth 12.99 a month. I have it - won’t ever use it again. DIME does make magnetic hoops for most of the brother machines - they are only 2 pieces. I have several of those and I like them. I wouldn’t want the multi magnets to deal with at all. DIME’s hoops are half the price of the brother ones.

In my opinion, there should be no reason for a subscription for this app. From what I’ve seen, normally subscriptions are for apps that store information in external servers or “the cloud”. The designs could easily be stored on the device, like photos, or pdfs. At most there should be a 1 time fee for the upgraded version to cover development costs, but imo there shouldn’t be a subscription.

Oh BROTHER! Just admit you make an expensive toy if you not going to allow users to use their own files without the app. Silhouette has a 1-time program fee to run their machines when importing other files.... it is a hella of a lot more honest and FAIR business practice to let the user USE that tool instead of turning it into a toy as the "FREE" model. You are paying $500 USD for this machine with an Expensive app that Most won't want to use and will make the files on other programs.
Also as a Mac user embroidery software for the most part only works on PC. So a free option is Ink Scape add-on to draw and do basic filled and satin stitch on all OS's for beginners. you have to do the work manually but if you're used to drawing vector art is not difficult to pick up. Because I don't have an embroidery machine yet I can create files still for others to "print" for me at patches or I do it the original way in a loop/ stabilizer on my sewing machine.
Also for me, king cones (vertical cones with a base) run terribly on the horizontal while satin stitching and run metallic thread makes it worse... it is just a flaw of any sewing machine to run them horizontally when you doing anything other than a straight stitch. 😱😭😰
Thread "turntables" was my best solution when twin threaded on top of being metallic and king cones (running 2 threads to get the right colour/density through a standard sewing machine). But the industrial Thread "turntables" are hard to source but the 2 I got "at home" versions from Wonderfil have been great! I also used a cheap thread stand from Amazon to get the right height for my basic sewing machine.
I used to also run "thread sleeves" on king cones to prevent tagling but you don't need to with a thread turn table. 🥰 I keep the thread sleeves and/or original shrink wrap now for storing the threads so that they don't get tangled when not in use.

Considering this video is monetized, I'm not sure why you would contemplate returning the Skitch. Why wouldn't you just keep it and sell it online, since you are making money on the review? I do appreciate your review, however. Your review made up my mind not to purchase it. The machine is lacking and those designs (both free and paid) are dated and certainly nothing exciting.
