    Followed all your tips and my kikuyu lawn is looking the best it has ever looked. Absolutely mint. Aerated, topsoil, fertilizer and alot of water. South Africa unfortunately doesn't have any watering agent, so leaving the leaves taller helps a bunch. Thanks for the great channel.

    Hey ben. Awesome vid. We had a rather hectic drought here in Capetown, South Africa about 2 years ago. I installed a system that cathes all my grey water for reuse in the yard including washing machine water. Its scary how much water a small 9kg washing machine uses. Drop some tanks underground and use all that just fir the yard and flushing toilets. Good luck there with the drought. We know how tough it is.

    The main reason I don't mow low is the environment. I can't justify the amount of water it requires. Nice video man! Cheers from the arid Alberta prairies.

    Definitely agree with Seaweed+Humic+Fulvic. It's a magic combination. I also add a vitamin solution called Superthrive. Just a couple teaspoons per gallon of the vitamins mixed with the normal rates of the normal amendments, and my lawn stays very green all year long and has longer than normal growing seasons with normal fertilization.

      Drought in Australia is commonplace.
      If you live on the coast, you're ok.
      But when you start to live out west where all the new housing estates are going..then you have water issues.

Thanks for your tips which we do as commonsense and glad your able to have a green lawn. Now an extremely rare real thing for many Australians. Ps where in Australia are you. • @buddhastaxi666
    @buddhastaxi666 4 года назад +6

    Best way with lawns....dig 90% of it up. Im a pro gardener by the way. Lawans use maybe 5 times as much water as mulched native groundcover . Lawns even use up drinking water, spray from sprinklers wastes more water. Often there is low absorption due to thatching and you get run off. Lawns are high maintenance water pits. Reduce to minimum.

    I find my biggest problem in my part of South Australia is wind. I have a few tall fescue positions that cop a wicked dry NW for several weeks at a time, I'm finding it hard to keep it thriving no matter how much water or products I put down.

  • @patgregurke4749
    @patgregurke4749 4 года назад

    Shade! One of my clients yards is fairly dried off, minus the 'park' section that's surrounded by garden beds and various trees.
    When plants get too hot they photorespirate rather than photosynthesise, producing oxygen instead of co2, causing stress/inefficiency,... however if you have a C4 grass rather than a C3 grass you'll be much better off. C4 is more adapted to heat as it has an extra step on top of the calvin cycle.

    • @patgregurke4749
      @patgregurke4749 4 года назад

      I'd suggest that shade inhibits the onset of photorespiration due to cooler leaf temps from indirect/scattered sun

      Yes, definitely is too big. If a spot goes dry, it goes dry. Not really much else you back so unless you have endless resources and staff

    Where's your water tank? You could catch most of the water needed for the lawn off your roof and grey water and some easy way to switch from city water to grey/rain water tank

      Want to send me one? I’m getting a bore installed. If that fails I’ll be looking at a water tank

      @@LawnTips next video say something like "I'm looking to partner with a company that will install a tank" ask daddy LCN he knows how to make it happen. I know you don't have much room but maybe some company will give you one? I have seen a soft sided bag like thing once put in under someone's deck on This Old House. Not sure if that's UV PROOF?

      @@campbellslee6773 you call them bores. Here in the states where city water isn't available we drill for water. The average depth where I live is around 200 feet I do know a certain portion of that well must have a steel casing if it's contaminated which it usually is not you'll have to drill deeper hive heard of 700 foot well in the Boston Massachusetts at that depth it's expensive 15,000 USD drilling through solid granite I'm unfamiliar with the rock type down under.

      Originally that was what I was getting, then since we haven’t had rain in so long, I changed my mind. When we built the house I was on apprentice wages and could only just afford what we have. Extras weren’t an option at the time.

    Water your lawn at night, at least the sun can't just dry it up instantly.
