I was asked to replace the Capstan belt and the Pinch roller tyre from this Tascam 38 1/2" 8 Track tape recorder.
This is how I got along with it.
Hope you find this useful.

Perfect timing this video is for me as I have a very similar Tascam 32 - 2 Track 1/4 inch Reel to Reel which needs a new belt and pinch roller.
Now I have a better idea of how to access and change these thanks to your video.
Many thanks for doing this vid Matthew 👍
how did it go, i have a Tascam 32 as well and am going to use this video as well.
Matthew, I can't thank you enough for this. Your instructions are clear, methodical and easy to follow. I achieved same on my Tascam 38 and the results, at least for the mechanics are excellent. Bit of a lube in places as well. Just waiting for some fresh blank tape to arrive to I can test record / playback and adjust as necessary. Best wishes, from Canberra, Australia.
As I learned recently, those aren't exactly shims under the guides, they're teflon thurst washers which keep the metal guides and posts from rubbing on each other and wearing over time. Keep track of them, they're nearly impossible to replace.
Ice cube tray - genius 👍🏽
Sometimes I feel inspired haha!
Are you using anything special to clean the gunge off of the rollers? Thanks for the vid, just purchased a 38, this is super helpful.
Just IPA
I have a Tascam TSR-8, 1/2 inch 8 track tape recorder, which I think is the more modern version of the 388. Mine has onboard DBX. I synced it up to Pro Tools using a PPS-2 synchronizer, and would use it to record drums prior to dumping the tracks into Pro Tools. I replaced the capstan belt, and sadly it no longer records anymore, so I messed something up.
Where is the 388?
