    I remember Tandy opening a shop in Harlow, but I don't remember when it closed. Before them, there was a small independent component shop in the town who had a good stock of components for the projects in the electronics mags, this was the early 70s. In the 80s, about 5 miles away, there was Cirkit components who filled the void and then Maplin, but i found it cheaper to buy from Cricklewood electronics mail order than them for large orders. I still use Cricklewood now for parts.

    When tandy started making computers they were years beyond the competition. Their deskmate software at the time was the first software that made computers user friendly. The could have been bigger than apple today if it wasn't for RadioShack's in your face rejected hard sales tactics and pushing only product that sold easily in abundance they were sell outs and dug a deep grave without ever attempting to climb out🤗

    There's a lot of stuff online about when they went out of business, but for me, around 2000 they were clearly suffering. Stores had been disappearing for a long time. I went into one near my childhood home that was closing and the floor was lined with 1 cuft moving boxes. I was dug a handful of things from the box and asked the manager how much. He gave a price of a couple of bucks or for $5 I could take the whole box. I took the box. I repeated something similar at a couple of other stores in the years after. I've been using and giving away stuff for years, and I still have loads of RS parts scattered throughout boxes in our storage rooms. Someday I have to make a video on all the RS stuff I still have, but it will take a gigantic effort to find it and pull it all together.

    Interesting seeing the quality of these items from WISH.. Generally, it all seems good value for money . I have also noticed quite a lot of price fluctuation on some hardware and the more popular integrated circuits . I can't say I know anyone with any electronic equipment that would require a 30 amp fuse either 😅💥. Maybe I have a too sheltered life .

  • @MrSpirit99
    @MrSpirit99 7 дней назад

    Don't use the fuses, they are probably fake and will destroy your equipment or burn your house down if they don't blow. ruclips.net/video/apQU_VuJlFU/видео.html Safety equipment from China is a terrible idea.

    40Vdc per each PCB, and all lamps run in series? Interesting why Technics would do that. It could be fun to make a parallel LED modification to it. And LED's in this circuit should never induce a hum on the audio circuits, if a hum occurs then 1) Technics really dropped the ball on the engineering of the amp or 2) the person installing the LED's mistakenly did something to induce it.

    Where I live in Texas, there were a bunch of Radio Shack stores all around town. I've purchased everything from reel-to-reel tapes, SM58 microphone clones, a police scanner radio, battery operated condenser mics, a bulk tape eraser, tape head demagnetizer, speakers of various sizes, etc. Plus, the occasional electronic components, jack sockets, XLR plugs, cable, wires, etc. I think my first VCR was one of their brands. I think their demise started when they started selling a lot of different cell phones, which occupied a lot of their floor space.

    I owe everything to Tandy. My local one became a haven for my interests in computers and electronics. The manager and staff would let me play on the computers for hours and ask endless questions about them and electronics. I had numerous kits and eventually bought several TRS-80 computers, they were so well documented - some of the best I've ever seen. I learned so much, from electronics to programming, I went on to college and uni and had a great career in computer science and engineering jobs. When I heard Tandy was gone - around 2000 I think it was, I was heartbroken. I heard about this new UK Tandy Online about a year ago, I don't think it's just old stock they seem to have new stuff and I hope they attract lots of hobbyists - it deserves to continue.

    Tandy was a strange and wondrous place, and by the 1990s they were cheap and cheerful, though they tended to be very cheap and not very good; or very cheap and absolutely amazing they really managed just OK. My local Tandy at that time would let me borrow items for a couple of days to really test them out before buying which was great and why at the time I was using the Tandy 100w stereo power amp for small venue PA, I still have and use that amp now, though the volume pots need replacing.

    Only a few weeks ago I was speaking to a friend about this. I personally owe my success to the local electronics outlets which were around when I was growing up here in Weymouth (Dorset). This helped me gain a hobby, which turned into a career where I was able to complete an apprenticeship with SSE. We had a Tandy (which also did repairs), and also a CB shop and the fantastic thing about this was meeting other hobbyists and making friends. We know what happened with Maplin - they went very 'consumerist' and their market changed more to the end user rather than the electronics hobbyist/engineer. Tandy seemed to die off when franchise owners retired with no one to take over. This was also partly due to lack of interest where electronics became less appealing to hobbyists especially where manufacturing progressed, surface mount and the dreaded RoHS 'lead-free' solder making it impossible for the hobbyist to work with so people simply gave up all interest. (Plot twist: Lead-based solder is now becoming more available despite restrictions, I will elaborate on that another time). Even though I am lucky enough to be semi-retired at the age of 50, I have been toying with the idea of getting a non-profit community interest company (CIC) and opening up an electronics outlet here in Weymouth, complete with electronics repair shop where people can simply donate for simple repairs carried out. It just needs the right people to be willing, a mix of volunteers and maybe enough in the money pot for a couple of paid staff. How nice it would be to have the exact same facility in which we can pass on our knowledge to the next generation of hobbyists and engineers, and even offer training and apprenticeships. Example, only today I had a friend contact me who was struggling to find a replacement 12v power relay for a charger panel on a motorhome. Showed me a photo of the relay and I was able to find a perfect match for him. None of this 'throw the whole module away and buy another one' nonsense which the manufacturer advised him. Thats tacit knowledge right there on my part. Imagine an electronics outlet where you could walk in and speak to an engineer who would be able to advise on anything like this. Of course even better if the part was already on the shelf! One part of me wants to completely retire, because the way things have gone with the dumbing down of the tik-tok generation, but the other part of me is saying no, the next generation needs opportunities, we cannot let big corporations rob them of such opportunities just so they can make a profit. Yes. Lets do this! Richard Talmage, LCGI, EngTech, TMIET Electrical & Electronic Engineer.

    We had Tandy in France as well, it was one of my favourite shops to hang out in in the late 80s, early 90s. I remember they were the place to go to get replacement needles for your turntable. Sadly the current online shop doesn't seem to stock those. I remember old Tandy catalogues and how expensive early computers were at the time. I'm pretty sure the ones I had kept have all long been chucked out though but it's good to know the brand is coming back.

    Simon Bates claimed on the Radio 1 Top 40 - 15th July 1984 that it is him playing the dead man on the Thompson Twins - Sister of Mercy video. I’ve looked and it does actually look like him. Could this be true? Also I was trying to work out what the Duranny fan was asking about who says “yeah” after the second verse on The Reflex? Then realised it is the slowed down sample of Simon Le Bon saying “Why”. Great video Matthew. Thanks again for doing this 1984 series 👍
