I had a cat adopt me in 2019 and we both were happy with him being the only child. Then COVID set in and I wasn't having people come over like I used to. By mid 2021 I started to notice a change in him. I work 10 - 12 hour days but always made time for cuddles, play, relax etc. I always leave the TV on for noise and something to watch. But I noticed it wasn't enough as he became lethargic and showing signs of depression and I decided to get a kitten. I came across a woman who does fostering for a rescue group who had a foster that just gave birth to 5 kittens. When they were of age I was going to adopt one until she told me momma needed a home and asked if I knew anyone. After thinking about it and seeing momma so sad, defeated and scared and at 8 years old estimated she had a rough life. I decided to adopt momma instead. It was exactly what both needed and in a short time they both came to life. Today, 16 months later, the 2 cats are inseparable and it's such a joy to see them playing, relaxing and being each others best friend as well as mine. 2nd cat was the best decision. 😊❤ I give them about an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening for RUclips cat games but I also play with my cats and I really have to be sure to give equal attention to both to avoid jealousy. If my girl cat gets too much attention but wont move so he can get attention then he sits on her until she moves 😅.
@@WellISaidIt Same here, I have a 1yrs old male cat, and a friend needed to rehome her 7yrs female cat, I adopted her, and is been hard. My boy is playful and tries to befriend but she attacks him. This go on for 6 months now...
@@xkirax2997 same, been about 8-10 months. It's better now than it was before. Also she was here first (for about 4 months) and is deaf. both of them are roughly the same age and both street cats I took in. Before she would scream blue murder even if he was in the same room. Now she only hisses at him when he comes too near but she will go sniff his butt whenever she feels like it. One thing I think may have helped is feeding them together. One bowl of food either side of me and let them eat facing each other. Slowly over time the dishes come closer and you get out of the way. Also when I give them treats, it's one for her, one for him. As soon as one of them hisses or goes for the other, treat time is over. Do this a couple of times and she should get the message. Also he goes out for a few hours per day so that is just me and her time. She was here first so I guess her nose is out of joint, you need to show her she's still your girl. They might never be friends but at least they are no longer enemies. LoL. Good luck.
Years ago my then cat ( brother) was lost under a pine tree during a blizzard,my neighbor said he may have heard it meowing under the branches.I went out and called it and the visual of him hopping through deep snow to come home will be with me forever.
I talk to my cat everytime I have to leave him to conduct errands. I tell him a few times before leaving, where I am going to, what time I am going to be home etc. I reassure him I am not abandoning him, & I am coming home. He is such a good sincere companion to me. When I return, I make a huge thing of it, cuddles and more talking. He is so clever and so loved. Had him during Covid lock downs at 12 weeks old. He is 3 now. I am 71. If I go away for longer, he goes to my son, daughter-in-law & grandchildren. He loves their 9yr old poodle. No lack of affection for him, in that home. ❤
A friend asked me to take in his cat while he was on vacation. The poor thing was terrified and hiding the entire week. I'm not sure she ate or drank anything that week. When my friend came in the door the cat immediately changed back to herself and was very glad to see him. I explained what happened and suggested it would be better for the cat to stay home and have a sitter look in on her daily.
I just spent a month in Italy and I took kitty with me. I used a back pack carrier and as long as he was on my back, he was quiet but when he was under the plane seat, he did meow quite a lot. If I tapped the carrier with my foot, to let him know I was still there, he was fine. I was so glad I brought him. I found a pet friendly B&B and he was ok with me being out for a few hours every day. He apparently liked it because he got more cuddly and affectionate than he had been. We Italians love cats and the whole airplane crew was going gaga over him. 😻😻😻
I travel to Italy also my fur babies are 2 years old I have 2. What do you do for litter? How does that work ? Such a long flight. I would love to take them .
When my cat was a kitten my cousin came to visit me but I wasn't home. She mentioned that she saw my kitty on the window crying. I felt so bad. I try not to go for too long. Even though he's six years old he misses me very much when I'm out too long.
T.y. for the info and pointers..it brought to mind that my cat who passed away years ago that whenever its time for me to go to work, she stayed as always very close to the big mirror in the house and it dawned to me that in order to have company, she assumed there is another cat in the house which was herself on the mirror...am still feel sad when I reminded of this..😔😭
I make sure to let my baby know I'm just running to the store or Dr and I'll be back in a certain amount of time. And he listens for the car and meows for me when I come in the door ❤

I do the same and my little boy ignores me while I’m leaving, but that is okay because I always tell him when I will be home. I find myself keep the time. For example, if I tell him I will be home in 2 hours I better be gone only 2 hours or he will “yell” at me when I’m late. Also, I had to be taken to emergency and was in the hospital for 10 days. We were both missing each other terribly. My daughter who James was familiar with looked after him. I was asking the medical team was there any chance of bring him in. Their answer was sorry we know both of you are missing each other but due to regulations and policies he couldn’t come in 😢🐈 When I got home we could not leave each other alone. Luckily I had to stay home while I recuperated.
@@Mary-cr3hs I hope you're feeling better. I had a total knee replacement in December. I explained to my baby about the surgery and that he couldn't walk on my leg for a while. He sleeps with me every night, right beside me. I was out patient thank goodness. I would've lost my mind without him.
If you use the tip about leaving out bags for cats to play in, be sure they don't have handles - like that one shown in the video. Cats can get their heads caught and not be able to get it off.
So glad that you pointed out these things to do & not do when you leave your cat alone. Some simple things, like leavng the shades open, are things we just don't think about sometimes, but can mean the world to the cat.
We just got our 2nd kitty 4 days ago. Another Persian. She's about 10 weeks old and our older one is about a year and a half. The older one is still a bit nervous about the little one.... still growling and hissing, but she's getting better. Can't wait to see them play together and have fun. Update: they're best friends now. 😻😻. They have so much fun playing together and they love going for walks in their double kitty stroller.
Inside your cats, mind, is a great magazine that comes out periodically, I highly recommend. There’s a lot of research saying that cats are more emotionally attached and bonded with their owners than dogs are. Cats don’t have the same facial muscles that dogs do. So we can’t read their face for cues like we can dogs.
I boarded my 9 year old cat during a cross country trip in our RV. At one point in the trip, we met friends for a 5 day cruise, so we arranged with a lovely kennel in a quiet wooded area. The dog did just fine out with the other dogs. The cat was inside, in a multi-level cat cage, window overlooking bird feeder, behind the intake counter. It looked like a great place for him to get attention and be watched carefully. After the 5 days, we picked the pets up, but noticed as we continued on the trip, the cat not eating. Or drinking. Or doing anything in the litter box. A check with the boarding facility and they swore up and down that he had been just fine while with them. Hmmm. After a few days, we stopped longer at a place to get off the road and try to get the cat back in his food and water, litterbox routine. Then to an emergency vet for injection of fluids. We continued the trip, and he still was not doing anything, not even barfing on curvy highways. Second emergency vet, no obstructions found in Xrays, more hydration injected. We cut the trip short, headed for home 2 days away. Finally he began taking water, food followed a day later. He didn't poop until the 7th day after getting him back. No more boarding, ever again for this one!
I agree. I boarded my cat at the vet for 5 days once and they called me 2 days in saying she hadn’t urinated and they said they needed to scan her for kidney stones. Sooo I paid $400 for that and they swore she had them, gave her medication but after a week being home she was fine. I’m never doing that again. I feel like every time I bring her to the vet they wanna run all these tests and inject her with medication that costs me a fortune meanwhile she’s a healthy, happy, normal, cat. Cats imo do not do well in sudden changes in their environment, especially when that means being locked in a cage for a majority of the day.

I am a cat sitter and have 3 of my own. I always leave the radio on during the day or when I am not home. I also volunteer for animal rescue and work a lot with cats we adopt out. I recommend to adopters to use a cat sitter rather than boarding. As you mentioned, they are creatures of habit and do better in their own environment. I have many clients and treat their cats as if they are my own - love, attention, litter box care, suggest fountains for water so it's always fresh and when they are gone I suggest using a radio or tell Alexa or Google to "play classical music playlist for cats" and they love it. I always recommend more than one cat as well (unless the kitty does not like other cats) and besides, cats are like potato chips - you can't have just one! BUT, I don't recommend having a "bag full" of cats! :)
The radio is left on, a light in winter, they get a hug & kiss when I leave. Vacation time, the neighbour comes over, feeds, waters, empties litter box, and sits with them for at least an hour a day.

Cats are very observant and quickly learn your routine. By changing the order in which you do things before you leave home in the morning and NOT making a fuss of them before you go, you will largely help your cat avoid separation anxiety.
When my sister goes on holiday or has to go away for a night or two, she leaves her cat with me. This happens about once a month for a night or two and maybe twice a year for a week or longer. Her cat is from the same litter as mine, so they are sisters. They get along great. They instandly play with eachother and my cat even lets my sister’s cat eat her food and sleep in her bed. They are always looking and calling out for eachother. It’s so cute to see them be so good together even when they don’t see eachother that much ❤
I always leave the radio on and I have 2 cats and a dog all the time. My cats always sleep in the bathroom, at 9 pm they are so used to the routine that they call me to feed them so that they can go to bed. Thanks for sharing.
Seperation anxiety goes both ways lol. I rarely go anywhere and even just motorcycle ride my cats are always in my mind if not on front burner certainly on the stove. Just the sanctuary of being home with them, they may seem indifferent at times but when they get up on couch with you to cuddle is priceless. Especially when one was so withdrawn he would bury his face in the corner of a box all day. Headbumps, purrs and trills mean more than gold.
I adopted a cat 15 months ago. I am disabled and I am always with her. I only leave her when I get groceries or meds. She was traumatized and I have spoiled my baby rotten. I do worry when I leave her alone.
I have wanted to leave a phone or camera running to see what my cat does when she's alone. But when I'm outside talking to someone she starts meowing/crying until I come back inside. It's odd because when I leave for several hours she doesn't care.
@@stereomois That’s because your cat can see or sense you are just outside, almost within reach Stereo. I was given a Kitten 2 weeks ago and my goodness, she has a lot of energy. We are finally adopting a routine of sorts. Fifteen minutes interaction a few times daily and the rest of the time she’s happy with toys or looking out of the window. She sleeps on my head, despite having two perfectly lovely beds! 😂😂😂

Very nice video. I had to leave my precious princess (11 years now) for 5 days! My neighbour took good care of her by doing the exact thing I did within 25 hours. The first day my cat wasn't really happy with some stranger. But day 2: "oh, okay, it seems you know the drill.". My neighbour sent me messages and photos through WhatsApp those 5 exciting days. All went well. When I came home, I was afraid she would just ignore me, but instead she jumped her face to mine and gave me a "welcome home" greet (nose bump) ♥♥
I was told to always leave a light on in the house if you'll be gone late. Cats get worried when you're not home and the house is dark. They feel like you're not going to return. I always make sure to have a small lamp on when I leave the house and might not be home while it's still light outside.

Ours won't go in the bathroom (where litter box is), day or night, without the light on and we've never been able to leave the house without the tv and our bedroom light on....we had an 18yr jack russel/beagle mix that passed 4yrs ago and we could NOT even step outside for 5 min without the neighbor thinking we were next door killing the dog if tv off. He was ok when I'd leave for work and husband there but if he left and I was there by myself with him or we both left he'd start howling and crying if you didn't have the tv on.
I felt bad leaving my cat alone for 15 hours when I had two gigs in one day. I'm retired and only work on Fridays and Saturdays for about six hours at a time. I'm home for the rest of the time.
🥺 I generally think and make decisions based on the question, "Does this feel OK to do?" Although I almost ALWAYS feel guilty when I leave the house even if just for a few hours... They really make you their whole world and when they become yours you truly have a real cat relationship 😻♥️
When you said nobody wants to use a dirty bathroom, I'm not sure I agree with that for everybody... My family seems to not care how dirty it gets, except me... I cannot stand it.

Here is a vital one: Put something small and heavy to block interior doors OPEN. When cats play, they can accidentally shut doors and get themselves stuck in a room. If that room doesn't contain food or water, well...
I have my cat go to my friends home, where there is another cat. It usually takes a couple of days for her to adjust. But now she's really good with it. On short trips I have a friend stay at my home .
I rescued an 8-week old kitten at a shipper in Georgia. I kept my eyes open for another stray cat to rescue so that the kitten would have someone to keep her company when I wasn't around. Six months after finding my female, I found a stray male that was about four months younger. He was cold, sick, hungry and scared. By the end of the day, I had earned his trust enough that he let me near to pick him up and take with me. Both are very well loved and are bonded to me to the point where I can let them outside to explore and they'll run off and be gone all day, but when I call their names in the evening, they'll come running home to their Daddy.
My cat was a stray that stayed here after having five kittens. Once she was spayed lost interest in going outside and is happy as an indoors cat. I still feed other stray cats but they have a harder life with dogs chasing them and mean neighbors.
Please do not let them outside to run. Did you know cats are responsible for some animals going extinct and also there has been a decrease of wildlife - birds 25% in NAmerica.
I’m very concerned about cats that are allowed outside. They can easily be attacked by bigger animals or even other cats. I’ve seen them die sad deaths. I know it seems hard to have a cat inside all the time but it’s really the best thing, so they have longer and safer lives.
My baby watches me leave. I tell him how long I'll be gone & hes still sitting in his window perch watching for my car to pull in when I get back. Then he runs to the door to give me boops ❤

@@ardentvale3125 there's not a day that goes by that I'm not snapping pics of everything he does that's just too cute. Most recently I played a fish video on my tablet for him & he was smacking the fish so fiercely that he knocked my tablet off the table 😂 We lost our senior cat due to old age & feline leukemia in the beginning of the pandemic. She was almost 24& she passed laying in the recliner with me. I'm so happy that I had jaxi cat to cuddle with after that. That's honestly when he started getting a little more cuddly. He took it pretty hard because even though they didn't really care for each other, they became friends & allies against the dogs. I want another cat so bad to keep him company but my husbands logic is "we don't know if we have another 20-25 years to dedicate to another critter". I kinda get it but I'm only 49& he's 45. There's so many ferals & strays around my house. People just kick their sick/ unwanted pets out the door & never even think twice about them after that
My husband and I were newly retired and wanted to travel a bit. We took a few trips every year for awhile. We boarded our cat during this time. We made sure he had the best penthouse suite. We gave alot of instructions to staff. It worked out OK for a bit. Then we noticed that we were getting calls from the boarding facility. Our cat was vomiting, he wasn't eating, he had diarrhoea and they had to take him from the vet. Once our cat came home, he recovered quickly. This happened a few more times and the last straw was when he came home and looked in very poor condition. I said, that's it...we are not going to board him again and we didn't. I had to go into the hospital for a couple of days recently, so I taped some videos of my cat on my phone so I could see him whilst I was in the hospital! I missed him as soon I walked out the door as supposed did he! My Mom looked after his whilst I was in the hospital!
We always make sure that our cats get enough attention throughout the day, have a clean litter box and if we are gone for more than a day, we have a pet sitter stop in twice. TY for this informative video!
I always kiss and hug my boy before I leave. The litter tray is cleaned, food is out, clean water and his heat blanket is switched OFF. Safety first, (I'm case off fire). I'm never out very long anyway and I'd never ever go away on holiday and leave him alone.
I have 3 shifts of pet sitters that our cats already know and adore. Also a “kitty cam” is indispensable for monitoring your cat(s). Getting your cat used to going places with you is worth trying. Thoughtful use if anti-anxiety meds or alternatives may be used. We need a more cat-friendly culture! Many vacation spots will allow dogs but not cats and this must change.
Wholeheartedly agree with more holiday/vacation places being cat-friendly 👌 it just isn't a thing and it's pathetic! I won't board my cats as it would be far too big of a routine change for them. But we do take short trips back to my parents so they get used to them as well as the car and travelling in their carriers. Is working quite well 😻 although rescue remedy is a must 👌
@@jo-lene9679 I'd worry to take my dogs or cats far away from home , what if one got outside and lost. If you gotta go home , no way to look for your friend .
In just under two weeks I am leaving for 8 days. I have had my pet Peeve (a black cat) for almost a year and as I work from home I have never been away from him for 8 hours let alone 8 days. Needless to say i am very worried, about both of us really. I have arranged for a pet sitter to visit twice a day. and have purchased several cameras. I can speak to him through each camera and one of them will even shoot out treats. I also planned to, even before this video, have the curtains and blinds up and the windows open a little so he can get smells from the outside world. I honestly expect to cry a little when I leave because i know that I will not be back for a while and Peeve will not.
Fully agree. I've always wondered how some "specialists" in cats assured that cats do not suffer in the absence of owners. The fact is that my cat is under real stress when I am not at home, even if other family members are at home. She has a favorite toy, a teddy bear, as soon as I leave the house (I don’t leave for more than an hour or two), she drags this toy into the hallway, lies down next to it and starts to moan and howl until I return. This is repeated almost every time, except if she was asleep and did not hear that I had left. So all the talk that cats are indifferent to the absence of their owners is complete nonsense.
When I must be away from home, I really resist being gone more than 2 nights. And if I’m away more than 24 hours or so, I call in my cat sitter. She loves my cat and he seems to like her, too. But I miss my cat, too, so I hate not being there for him.
I rehome, this cat to some one, can cat remember, where it lived,it was.11 blocks away, I guess didn't wanna stay there. They had a dog,I. Did not that at the time.

I agree, do NOT ever board your cat! I worked at a cat boarding facility for 5 years and witnessed first hand how stressed cats get. Especially during major holidays! Boarding facilities make the most money then, and they overbook the place to make up for slow times and the stress level is thru the roof at that time. When they run out of cages, they stick cats in large dog carriers! Ridiculous. Whatever you do, do NOT board your cat!
It's shocking how few people know these basic things. Thanks for helping educate them! Best tip is to ensure your cat has a friend. Not just when you're away, but all day every day. Cats get so lonely!! But people think they're 'solitary' animals. Not true! We now have three and are thinking of getting even more.
Almost every cat I've cat-sat for without fail, has come right to the door when they hear the key turning. They want petting, fresh food and water, and giving lots of head-bunts and leg-rubs. When you watch TV, they always are in very close proximity either on the floor or on your lap. Playtime too. Some kitties can take or leave toys, but that's okay, there are other ways to engage them. It's a myth that every kitty is aloof and skittish. Some are, it's true. But the majority want their humans; either parents or a regular visitor/cat-sitter they are familiar with. Cats are the best!!!😽😸🐈🐾❤️
We both worked and took in an 8 week character kitten. He solved his loneliness by inviting the neighbours two cats in. The house was trashed, eg mats skidded down to the other end of the hall, bed littered with paw prints from multiple paws chasing each other, stuffed knocked over and often the three exhausted cats all sleeping in his kitty bed. A furry pile of arms, legs and ears. Our kitty was an indoor outdoor cat, but those two older cats would not let him pass the corner of the house. Still a long way to get to the street. We never knew what we would find when we got home, but could guarantee his food bowl was empty. They had a great friendship but neighbours moved when he was about 1 year old. The new people had cats too and they got invited in as well.
Cats are so like people in the fact that we are all diferent, the problem is when we get a cat we don't know what their personalities are going to be like until it's too late. I have a British blue, now aged 11 and he never meows and won't sit on my lap, he loves rolling on the floor for us to tickle him and gives us face bumps all the time but that's it, they are such funny creatures.
Thank you for this information. I've had cats most of my life yet I learned something here. I am surprised they can be emotionally upset when left alone too long on a consistent basis. I am usually not far away for too long, but I'm going to pay more attention to her behavior. I do love cats so much and they tend to get a bad wrap. You cleared that up so nicely.
I have 2 cats and I never ever leave them alone more than 4-5hrs max. I clean their litter box multiple times a day (5-6 times). I play with them for at least 1hr a day every night as a routine. This is why I think they are the most happy cats. I do recommend the same to all. Their happiness is invaluable... :)
If you give your cat paper bags to play with make sure you cut any handles off. I've seen cats get stuck in them and panic. My cat loves to makje confetti out of paper bags so I only give her bags made entirely of paper, not coated ones.
That was the first thing I thought of when they talked about the paper bags. I get very anxious when I hear people letting their cats play with plastic bags. With or without handles, they can get trapped and suffocate.
Totally agree. My cat got his head in one years ago and he was running around with it stuck, unable to see where he was going - absolutely petrified - and so was I trying to catch him to get it off. Always cut handles.
We had to leave are cats three months in a boarding kennel. We had to move quickly, not by choice. Ended up In a hotel. We visited them every week it broke my heart to leave them. We take our cat with us when we go camping in our RV. He doesn't like riding in the car, but his scent is all over everything in our RV, so he recognizes it as another of his "territories". The routine is the same in the RV as at home, so he doesn't flip out, and instead gets very relaxed. Of course, he prefers to be at home, which is where we spend the bulk of our time, but he does okay on our vacations, too.
These are all excellent, and very helpful practices. We often think of cats as independent animals, the bond with their owner is very interesting and I hadn't thought about them having separation anxiety. I agree, don't change their environment. Regarding opportunities for enrichment, I'm so glad you included watching and listening to TV with birds and other stimulating activities. I've recently collected videos from bird feeders, and the response from cats and some dogs has been very interesting. Wow, all fantastic information, thank you! Keep those kitties happy :) I'll say it again, bird feeder videos are interesting for the sounds as much as the sights and lead to napping :)
I turn on RUclips aquarium on my TV. It has music and fish, but I don’t leave my cat for more than one day and people don’t understand that but he and I have not been separated since he was adopted six or seven years ago. Except he didn’t get lost during a move and I had to stay on the street in the cold for two months so it it it had a major effect on him. I need to go back to work and I need to travel but I can’t and having a pet sitter, I really don’t feel comfortable with somebody coming in my place and going through my stuff paranoid anxiety person with emotional support cat. I think we both need emotional support that we don’t get from humans.
That's great, Im a vet asst. MOST COMMERCIAL CAT FOODS ARE UNHEALTHY OVER THE LONG TERM. BEACAUSE THEIR INGREDIENTS ARE UNREGULATED IN THE U S A, AND MEAT IS EXPENSIVE. KIDNEY DISEASE IS COMMON. SO, PLEASE CONSIDER PURINA ONE, OR HILLS SCIENCE DIET FOR A LONGER LIFE. THEY COST A BIT MORE. ALSO, MALE CATS GET URINARY BLOCKAGE FROM TOO MUCH DRY FOOD. IF YOU HAVE AN OLDER CAT, IT SHOULD HAVE COMPLETE BLOOD TESTING DONE ROUTINELY. THIS RULES OUT MANY HEALTH PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY GET WORSE. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD. (THIS APPLIES TO DOGS AS WELL)
I had an amazing kitty cat, she was my precious fur baby💕💝❤nevertheless, previously I had to attend a conventional which was work related/compulsory & it was away from home, & I was required to leave for a few days. My Dad was her babysitter, he used to take pics & update me on their hilarious moments, they had a good relationship. My father loved my cat soooooooo much & she loved him too💞
IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: if you let your cat play with bags (plastic or paper) always make sure you cut off the handles! ALSO: if you leave something on for them like radio or tv, make sure its not to loud! ^^
My 13 yr old girl is still peppy, and very content to be an indoor cat. When the sitter arrives in my absence, my pet sees that she's not me, and runs off to stay hidden. Each time I come home, she wants ten minutes of affectionate fussing up while rolling on the rug.
Thank you this was a nice video. I haven't gone on vacation since my parents died because I have no one to look after my two cats. When working nights, I do keep the radio on so that they can listen to light classical music ( not all classical music is comforting ) and sometimes I put on talk radio - NPR. ).
If you leave paper bags out to entertain your cat(s), please cut the handles off. The bags in the video have handles, which can lead to strangulation or just plain terror in your cat when they are unable to free themselves should it get around its neck. I have seen this happen. It’s not fun to watch your cat tearing around the house in a complete panic, but at least I was there to free her.
We did a week long cruise and our cats let us know they weren’t happy. The kitchen was destroyed. There was a huge yellow spot in the middle of our bed. We changed the sheets, ditched the comforter u til could be laundered and settled in. Our male cat got on the bed and urinated while we were in it! We took off the sheets, put the first batch in the dryer, removed mattress cover to be laundered with the comforter and got back in bed. Then our female cat jumped up and did the same! Only my husband kept them from being outside cats! The sheets had to wait for the other 2 batches to move on to be washed! First time I’ve ever changed sheets 3 times in one day!!!
I've found from experience that the most important thing you can do for your cats emotional health, and for the safety of your belongings, is to have multiple cats who are about the same age. The reason is simple they will revert to their natural social skills with each other and playing with each other when they are bored.
I just really don’t think my 3 yo could deal with that. She is such a protective and territorial girl already. When I first got her we were only allowed one pet. Now, new management and now 2 is ok! Plus, the apartment is so small, really no room for 2 litter boxes. Maybe side by side? That’s the only way. We also have a loft. I could see Lucy knocking the other one off. Too scary to think about. I’ve never had just one cat growing up without another baby around. It’s been hard but I love her and just want her to be happy.
@@1ronmad1n - harder to bring new ones in. Easier to bring them in together. However, the strange thing you might find is by bringing a new cat in, the territorial tendencies go away.
When I go out for short periods of time. When I come back home I call my kitty cat and pick her up and pet her and give her treats. Before I leave I let her know that I will be back home in a little bit. She is ok with it.she is such a good kitty cat.
My wife and I used to take our boys with us on long vacation trips. Cats like children respond positively to our investment of our lives and our time. I can testify that loved cats are better traveling companions than most humans, and the fun and comical memories are treasures for a lifetime.
So very true. We took a five and a half week sojourn through 17 states back in 1999. At the time we had two brothers from the same litter. Willie was an orange Tom. I recall him calling to be let out of his carrier. We expected him to use the liter box, but he came up front on the console and put his paws on the dash to get a whiff of cold air from the ac vent and look out through the windshield. With cold air blowing his whiskers he scanned the Vista beyond the glass like an army field general. He then turned and looked straight up in my eyes as if to say, "we've been gone over a month! Do you know where the hell you're goin'?"
For the past 10 years I have been going to Comic-con in San Diego. Luckily, my roommate, who had a cat & is a cat lover, is able to be there for my kitty and feed him when I'm gone. I am lucky on that end. I always ask my cat how was his day when I get home from work. He tells me.
I learned alot of these facts about feline physical and mental health over the decades with my cats and thank God you concurred with most of the ones I had learned from mine, also I still learned from you about what the clawing of the furniture means or over vocalizing of the cat. I really benefitted miles from watching this video, Cheers 🐾✨❣️
I swear my cat has to be the most independent cat I've ever known. He just seems to be happiest left one. I was hoping for a cat that loves being petted but the only time he and I are attached is when he comes to bed with me. But having said that I've grown to love him. He loves outside and because he never had a human touch from the age of 2 months because his mother was feral really so maybe that's why. Maybe the first human touch which was from me he neveriked😂😂😂. Oh he does like being brushed.❤
I live in Australia. In *_May of 2019,_* I went to Singapore for ten days. I left my cat with a friend for those ten days. She was the only person who offered to be a cat-sitter for me. When I returned to Australia ten days later, my supposed friend refused to return the cat to me, saying that she and the cat had "bonded". It is now *_March of 2023_* and I still haven't gotten the cat back. The cat has become grossly overweight because the new 'owner' doesn't feed the cat proper portions of food - she just leaves large piles of cat biscuits lying around on the kitchen floor. She also told me that she won't pay for vet bills if the cat gets sick. She said she will give the cat back to me when it is old and needs medical help. True story. I love and care about my beautiful cat. Her name is Angel. And she's getting old now.
@@katsuki1215 Agreed, that is not a good friend. The girl you gave her to sounds like she is not taking good care of her. Over-feeding a cat is mean and dangerous and could result in the cat having bad health problems in a few years. Shame on her.
My two kittens are nearly 2 years old now but very playful. When I leave, sometimes I let the bathroom sink trickle a little fresh water. They will also play in the empty bathtub sometimes and I leave them a couple of toys to thrash around the tub. Also, if it's really warm, they seem to get a kick out of a few ice cubes instead of just water. They have more than one water dish and a few snack options, stashed around the house. Sometimes. I keep them guessing and they love an occasional mylar balloon! The string is irresistible! Once they puncture it, they celebrate their victory.🎈 🎉
with the open bags tip, please remove the handles. It’s very dangerous for the cats, as their head can get stuck in the handles, they are trying to escape and that makes things worse quickly. If you’re not around it may lead to death 😢. We were very scared about this once, luckily everything was well, as we managed to help our kitty immediately, but the vet told us that unfortunately tragic accidents happened because of bags with handles 😢
I have a cat sitter he seems happy when I get home I have used kennels once and they messaged me every day showing him playing or eating I was happy as was moving and holiday at the same time
My family thinks I’m crazy when I express my cats emotional needs. They all are dog people and are very good pets parents but think cats behavior is the same. When I let them know about the vet saying my cat is Highly emotionally damaged they think she was just afraid. Not so. Being a feral rescue from The streets of Miami and being captured and driven up to New Hampshire where I found her in a animal shelter to adopt and I’ve had lots of cats in the past, who have passed from cancer last year, but she is the most terrified Kitty I’ve ever seen. it’s taken 14 months so far and I still can’t pick her up but she’s turning into a sweet loving fur baby. I can’t leave her alone for more than 6 hours and I stick strictly to her schedule and they just don’t understand. so thank you for sharing this for people out there that think cats are like other pets, or like a dog because they’re not
We made the mistake of boarding our two kitties when we went to the coast for a few days and I will never do it again. The kennel was run by their vet which was next door so I thought it was a good place. I was miserable without them and cried when we left and when I picked them up they were squeezed into such a tiny cage that I was livid. I’m glad they forgave me and I promised to never leave them again and I never will. We also don’t leave them at night.
I appreciate the information but I think that we need to know our cats and then do what we think works. I adopted two two-year-old cats that lived to the age of 18 and 19. Unfortunately one passed in 2021 and the other in 2022. The times I traveled from Friday until Sunday I would leave extra litter boxes and a large auto feeder and water dispenser. They were fine. Longer than that I would have someone come in every day to scoop the box and spend some time with them. I tried placing them in extended cat care when I was traveling outside of the country. That did not go well at all and I had to hustle to find a cat sitter. In January I adopted two junior cats and have not left them overnight yet. But I do leave them for about nine hours a day so that I can work. Fortunately, I am able to work virtually a couple of times a week at which time they are pains in the butt. lol ;) When I travel again I will have someone come in to take care of them. They are still skittish (feral beginnings) so I will wait.
I have 10 cats at any one time, as my wife fosters rescue cats. There is a toy, that we absolutely Never have in our house. It's those cat toys that consist of a flexible pole with a nylon string, and weighted feathers or whatever, on the end of the string. I used to jam the handle into a drawer like a fishing pole, to let the cats play with it. They like these things very much, and it's an easy toy for cat owners to play with, for getting cats to chase the end of it around. A few years ago my cat Olly was playing with it, by himself. I was sitting in the same room fortunately, be cause I suddenly realized it had got wrapped around his neck, and the end of it spun around the nylon string. He was being choked by it. If I hadn't noticed, he would have basically hanged himself on the floor, like an animal snare. He was ok, but I BANNED those Cat Fishing Poles in the House. The same go's for any type of string left where they can get at it. Fishing gear isn't my thing, but that stuff is deadly for keeping around a cat. I wish they would Ban those toys Period. You can visualize how you'd feel if it happened to yours. -Ireland
I have 2 rescues that are almost 1 year apart to the day....1st a friend brought to me with a puncture wound in her neck after being snatched from the dogs mouth that had already killed her momma and siblings, she was 3wks old, she'll be 3yrs in July. The second one my grand daughter and I found tied up in a plastic bag and left in the sun to dies at 4 1/2wks old, she'll be 2yrs in July. We had no intension of keeping the 2nd BUT the 1st had other plans. Day 1 #1, Matilda, did NOT like the idea of another cat in the house....took less that 24hrs for her to here the baby, Rose, crying and scared and Matilda was right in the box with her. Mommy instincts kicked in and she would pack Rose around, clean her and anytime she walked away and Rose made a sound of any kind she was right back to see what the problem was.....Drove Matilda crazy when we'd take Rose to feed her. After wks of Matilda taking care of her and us worried more that once that Rose wasn't going to make it we had to keep her. Long term affects...Matilda is scared to death of any and all dogs, she even freaks and goes hides if she hears one on tv. Rose some brain damage due to lack of oxygen and vet said the only way to explain her damage was "It will be like having a moderate to severely autistic 4yr old in your home for the rest of her life" and he was EXACTLY right! The lack of oxygen also affected her growth. She is only as big as and looks like a 3-4 month old kitten. At 1yr when she had only gotten that big he did several test to make sure she did not have a genetic disorder or something. All came back neg....so she's just a little bitty thing.
A cat-sitter for our cats is out of the question. When we have visitors, they hide and are nowhere to be seen for HOURS. I can't imagine how a stranger coming to our home when we're not there would be any LESS stressful for them than being alone.
My girl runs under the bed especially when my brother and family come over. They are very kind and loving. Then I tried a professional pet sitter, she came to them immediately when they called in. Now she even welcomes my brother and his family. I really would get her another cat but she seems to hate other cats. Or is scared of other cats.
Y’all wish I could get my little Xena a best friend but sadly I cannot with my restrictions of my rules of my apartment being only one cat she seems content and happy to be the only fur baby child
I think the time that a cat can be left alone depends a lot on their age. Kittens and young ones need more attention and care - I used to take my 2 cats with me when going away for the weekend (to my parents' place). As they got older (over 1 year old), since they were on such a good terms, I could leave them home for a weekend (leaving on Saturday morning and returning on Sunday afternoon). Dry food was always out for them (they never overate and never got overweight), with treats balls and many toys. Lucky enough I found really good friends living in the neighborhood who now look after them when I'm traveling abroad for a longer period of time - and in return I look after their pets while they travel. We leave emergency vet contacts along with money if anything happens. So far this worked as a charm for me. I prefer this over boarding them - they are old by now and they don't like leaving their home at all.
This is not true, my cats have always become more needy and want more attention and cuddles the older they are. Its not right to leave cats alone over a weekend, definitely have someone come over to check on them - that's just the responsible thing to do.
@@Butterfly11182 That's about your cats. Every cat is different and every cat and owner relationship is different. I know my cats, thank you. Fiona will be 20 in April, so I know her well. Yes, when she is awake, she seeks my company but since she is asleep the majority of the day, it's a limited time. My other cat is recently adopted, she is your typical wallflower cat - hiding all the time. Yes, she opened up to me and she comes to me when SHE needs it (not forcing myself on her), but it's still rare. Fiona is super balanced and healthy, she is super fine with the way we are living. I don't leave them alone for a weekend frequently - just once or twice a year. For longer holidays - as I mentioned - I have friends coming over. Thank you for your concern, but this perfectly works for US.
My cat rides all over the USA with me and my pitbull in my truck. He loves riding in the truck and me and the dog are with him 24/7. He also rides very well in cars.
I've always had atleast 2 cats. Right now I have 7. I had lost my male Coon cat in Oct so my son got me a female kitten for Christmas. She's fitting un beautifu)y with the rest of the girls except for one girl who prefers to do her own thing. My older girls are between 12 and 16 yrs old. Three of them are mothering the kitten, the others play with her but don't mother her. All get cuddle time and play time with me, plenty of clean litter boxes, dry food all day and wet food for dinner, toys, and two cat trees. All are house cats although 3 of them were strays.
I have 2 parakeets and I tell them I'll be back when I go out ill leave music on and when I get home I'll immediately go to the cage and say hello and open the cage door so they can fly around
I had two cats who were born and lived outdoors in a colony. When I had to move them indoors they looked out the window all the time until I made a cat door for them. Now the one I have left just lives to go out and run around the yard. It took me a year to figure it out and sadly one stopped eating and died before I realized the problem was real.
We have several video cams around the house to check up on the cat. The cams are live and can swivel by touch on smartphone. Also can hear and talk to the cat. The cams also record motion detected movements which can be played back instantly on our smartphones anywhere. The cams are Super HD and also have infra red for night viewing and recording on 64GB micro SD cards if the lights are off.
I leave mine at home 2 weeks a month. When I get home I spend the first 2-3 days spending every minute with them. I have a sitter that comes and sits with them daily. I also leave the movies running the entire time I am gone. I will add a second cat box. I would never bored them. I had a cat go to Kitty Jail overnight and she was never the same again. My cats have food 24/7. I got a call a week before I was scheduled to get back. I called a friend and had him go get 2x 26 pounds of cat food. 1 thing people need to remember is, They may only be in your life s short amount of it but you are in their life their entire life. Don`t get a pet unless you are going to be their forever home. There is no excuse that is worthy of I am moving and my animal can`t go to where I am moving to. I may work 400 miles away but I make sure they have an apartment in Vegas and someone to come in daily and hang out with them.
I leave my cat in the house whenever I'm away since other cats have come into my yard (while he's outside) trying to fight him. After hearing them fighting, I immediately rush outside, then bully cat runs away or off my premises. But my cat had even sustained an injury as a result of him being attacked while outdoors. So yes, my cat stays indoors whenever I'm away.
Why is your cat outside. Build your friend a catio if it's necessary, but only feral cats should be outside freely and unsupervised/protected IMHO. I'm 75 and have had many cats--this has kept my cats healthy and long-lived. ❤
@Sue White My cat adopted me, and we'd be good friends since. Since he was free when I met him, I'll always allow him his freedom whenever he chooses to venture outside. Although he usually stays close to home, other stray cats have come into our yard and they sometimes become aggressive, so I place him inside when I'll be gone a long while. But, if he should chooses to venture and never return, he'll always have that option, just as I would want to be free to choose liberty...
We always make sure one of us are home, except for app't days not to often thank goodness..but we make sure to let him know we will not be long..he's very smart,.since he looks at us eye to eye when talking..He stills does silly things at 16 years..acts funny like stare at a wall if we don't involve him in conversation..He always reminds us when its time to get his leash to go outside for a quick walk and for me to sit outside while he relax's on his furry..Of course they need attention always, they are not objects..
I have 2 cats & I have been leaving the TV on when we leave for years when we leave and I've tried all diffrent types of music & my cats like the 70's& if I put any other music I come home to a big mess & I do 1 other & thats seeing I have an answering machine I call & talk to them through it And it really helps
I'm feeding a mama cat w/ 2 kittens who is breastfeeding 2 babies. She meows as I bring her water & salmon dry cat foods.😊🐱. She's happy w/ it. Also, I'm feeding a dozen of stray cats w/ Ocean fish, Tuna dry cat foods. It's a parade & feasting for them eating what I'm bringing for them to eat. Kittens played a lot tumbling down their bodies😊. It's a happy day for them😺😄🙌.
Youre so nice. But can you consider humanely trapping them, or just taking them, into a spay neuter program? Many are low cost You really need to fix them and adopt out the friendly ones, to indoor homes. A shelter might take some. They will keep multiplying. Best of luck. And thank you. I'm a vet asst. Try feeding canned food too. It's healthier than dry. Especially for male cats, who can get urinary l cage from too much dry food. Yes, make sure they always have fresh water. Kittens can't eat dry food yet, the kibble is too big for them to swallow. ❤keep on doing what you're doing! Do a Google search in your area for a spay clinic
Litter boxes are a chore so if you have the best tools available like a great scoop and maybe a gardening hand shovel for the big clumping type litter, a waste basket with liners it will make the job easier.
Use the Sifting scoop in one hand and a big serving spoon in the other to nudge the clumps into the sifting scoop. It's so much easier and faster and you don't have to dig under the clumps with the sifter. They ENGINEER them to break easily so they will have repeat sales. Also, always use clumping k litter and never clay. If you get the type that comes in big yellow square plastic containers with the (usually orange) lid that snaps tight and a handle after it is empty you can carry it to the litter box and put the clumps in it. It is air tight and if it is not too full, you can even put the tools in it or have another empty one ready. Just remember to stand back when you open the lid and give it a few seconds for the built up odor to escape.
Excellent Video and I Agree with Every 🐱🐾Tip. My Job was going to Pay for my 2 Purrfect Female Felines (Sisters and Both lived to be 20) to stay in a 🐈🐾 Hotel. The Veterinarian did not recommend this, due to they would feel abandoned and it would be better for them to stay in their home environment. I received Major Catattitude upon my return. 😾😼 Resting in Pampered Luxury Paradise Laurel 😻🐾 and Hardy 😻🐾
Totally agree! I have now allowed two more cats from vicinity to eat sleep and play inside along with my cat to give him a feline company. He is more confident now. But yes, he has more scratches than before :)
My black cat used to have HORRIBLE separation anxiety when we first got her... A few months later i randomly found another kitten in a parking lot and i was originally gonna give her to someone else but i had to bring her home first and my black cat instantly took to her and they became sisters 😂
I have separation anxiety when I'm away from my Copper Fox. I've been working I recently rescued a calico kitten left abandoned at the grocery store. It was on 9/11. It took 3 hours to gain her trust even after feeding her . I went and got catnip and she finally came out. Copper wanted to kill Iris . She was persistent on being loved by Copper. And after separation while I was working for a Week they adore each other.
I wish it was that easy for everyone. My two don't like each other, well he likes her but she is not having any of it.
LoL. Good luck.
Now that's funny Michael. 🤣
Good for you for adopting the mamma cat. ❤

That's lovely. But must have been massively stressful for you both! Don't cats have to be quarantined when flying internationally?
Being more cuddly may also indicate insecurity ? The cat was deprived of her territory after all.

I do the same thing!!
@@Mary-cr3hs I hope you're feeling better. I had a total knee replacement in December. I explained to my baby about the surgery and that he couldn't walk on my leg for a while. He sleeps with me every night, right beside me. I was out patient thank goodness. I would've lost my mind without him.
When I go to work one of my kitties leaves me her favourite toy at the door for me❤️❤️
If you use the tip about leaving out bags for cats to play in, be sure they don't have handles - like that one shown in the video. Cats can get their heads caught and not be able to get it off.
Yes
My late, great striped sweetheart sure did ave facial expressions! Hatred, love, mischief-more. Sure miss him.

You are amazing. I rescue cats as well. If only we had more people like you in this world. 💕💕
Mine needs the tv on or else my house is toast!
And it has to be on the news!🤣👏🤘
Funny! My cat got suddenly scared of TV when she got a fright off it.
I have a kitty and a smal doggy, they are each others and mine and friends but not best buddies. They are both from rescues and I love them.

@Susan Keyssecker I also say bye to my cats before I leave and they're perfectly fine. They just stare at me and keep doing whatever they were doing

Nice. That is a great thing for the kitties.

I'm fostering three kittens so she stays busy these days. Got mom cat spayed today but I have to keep them separated since the mom is feisty. Kittens are almost nine weeks old, one of them could already move away but want them to give more time to socialize

Aawww, your cat is a happy one, I think.

Here is a vital one: Put something small and heavy to block interior doors OPEN. When cats play, they can accidentally shut doors and get themselves stuck in a room. If that room doesn't contain food or water, well...
Absolutely agree. My cat will push with his front paws against an ajar door tried to exit and shut it goes.
@@ellegroup7289I am sure you would live longer if you never left your house. It's just cruel to keep cats inside their whole lives.

@@ardentvale3125 aww. That's so cute. I just tell jaxi kisses or boops & he equates kisses to boops & pushes his little head into my lips. He likes to wake me up by gently tapping my shoulder so he knows we'll lay there for 5 minutes getting pets & boops. @@ardentvale3125 they're all cute. Jaxi isn't usually a cuddler. But he has his moments. He's a battery terminal rescue. @@ardentvale3125 there's not a day that goes by that I'm not snapping pics of everything he does that's just too cute. Most recently I played a fish video on my tablet for him & he was smacking the fish so fiercely that he knocked my tablet off the table 😂
We lost our senior cat due to old age & feline leukemia in the beginning of the pandemic. People just kick their sick/ unwanted pets out the door & never even think twice about them after that
Head butting is marking the territory and getting the scent, as many experts say.
Cuddling seems different from that.
😻🐾 absolutely....think for a long time people assume that cats don't care about anything but they very much do 😻🐾
My husband and I were newly retired and wanted to travel a bit.
Never having previously owned a cat, I wish that I had understood this behaviour.

Always close ALL doors aka closets. Never leave your house with seeing their face. They may be trapped some where.
I honestly expect to cry a little when I leave because i know that I will not be back for a while and Peeve will not.
kitty cam is an excellent option!

Ridiculous. Whatever you do, do NOT board your cat!
give your kitty a gun so she can arrest criminals
It's shocking how few people know these basic things. Thanks for helping educate them! Best tip is to ensure your cat has a friend. Not just when you're away, but all day every day. Cats get so lonely!! But people think they're 'solitary' animals. Not true! We now have three and are thinking of getting even more.
we need to learn to give them the best life

Reading this comment, I got pleasant images in my minds eye.
We have three cats here ❤ and they all come to the door to greet people
I have 2 cats and I never ever leave them alone more than 4-5hrs max. I clean their litter box multiple times a day (5-6 times). I play with them for at least 1hr a day every night as a routine. This is why I think they are the most happy cats. I do recommend the same to all. Their happiness is invaluable... :)
you can do all that, because you have no life
If you give your cat paper bags to play with make sure you cut any handles off. I've seen cats get stuck in them and panic. My cat loves to makje confetti out of paper bags so I only give her bags made entirely of paper, not coated ones.
Excellent point.
Ha. My cat loves to wear bags like capes. We keep an eye on her when she has them.

Mine did ok in the RV. He liked walking on his leash in the woods as long as it wasn't crowded or noisy.
a lot of cats hates car rides :) i found that very curious
(THIS APPLIES TO DOGS AS WELL)
they need company and attention as any pet
I had an amazing kitty cat, she was my precious fur baby💕💝❤nevertheless, previously I had to attend a conventional which was work related/compulsory & it was away from home, & I was required to leave for a few days. My Dad was her babysitter, he used to take pics & update me on their hilarious moments, they had a good relationship. My father loved my cat soooooooo much & she loved him too💞
How lucky for you to have such an amazing dad.x
However, the strange thing you might find is by bringing a new cat in, the territorial tendencies go away.
yes company for cats is very iportant, they are4 very active and cur5ious
When I go out for short periods of time. When I come back home I call my kitty cat and pick her up and pet her and give her treats. Before I leave I let her know that I will be back home in a little bit. She is ok with it.she is such a good kitty cat.
My wife and I used to take our boys with us on long vacation trips. Cats like children respond positively to our investment of our lives and our time.
I can testify that loved cats are better traveling companions than most humans, and the fun and comical memories are treasures for a lifetime.
yes, they are very funny and the best companion
I love how you say "our boys"!
Me too. I ask my Jazz, 'Did you have a nice day or did you have a nice sleep. She will answer either yes or no in Cat meows.
@@snoopybluejeans Me too! She greets me at the door
Here in America, we call that theft.
That’s not your friend 😂
@@katsuki1215 Agreed, that is not a good friend. The girl you gave her to sounds like she is not taking good care of her. Over-feeding a cat is mean and dangerous and could result in the cat having bad health problems in a few years. Shame on her.
That is TERRIBLE! Is ther nothing you can do? Murder comes to mind.....
Sue her.
When I am out for a week, my solitary cat would freak if a sitter arrived, especially repeatedly. Agree with 5. Window viewing cats 🐈🐈⬛👍
Once they puncture it, they celebrate their victory.🎈 🎉
at least, they have eachother
with the open bags tip, please remove the handles.
Luckily for our cat - always all the time someone at home. And more important - we have another cat). So two cats always can comfort each other.
My two cats have definitely not liked my work schedule bouncing back and forth so much in the last few weeks.
A good sitter communicates, sitter needs to be stop by for very briefs visits before actually sitting. My feral finally responded - 3 years.
Ps. Get them a paper box. That's any good size box with lots of brown packing paper in it. They LOVE THE STUFF.
What brand are the cameras?
Ah! aren't you nice. x
I always leave the tv on for my cat. ❤
Excellent recommendations!
This is so very true!
Thank you❤
This is very good info. I don't like to leave my babies for more than 6 hours at a time. I'm very particular that they don't feel left.

Ah! how lovely x
Cats love to have a friend. Two or three are no more trouble than one. Yes, you have more cat boxes, but they love to play with each other.❤❤❤.
