Jerry Hadley was a wonderful tenor, who suffered from being an American in an opera world that at the time discriminated against American Italianate tenors and sopranos. Too many songs were left unsung.

Wouldn't it be fun if PBS would start to replay/rerun some of the best things they've ever done? Certainly this "Flicka and Friends" program would be near the top of my "Want to See" list! I happened on it when originally broadcast and was enthralled! One of the very rare TV programs I've actually most fondly remembered. Come on, PBS!

This scene is so unbelievably sweet, innocent and endearing it brings tears to my eyes. Believe it or not I KNEW Flicka in her salad daysays, We were both students at Mannes then. I had the privilege of accompaning her several times. She was even a soloist at the church where I directed the music for a brief period.a Flickr was a lovely, down-toearth and unaffected as anyone coud be. She was modest too. None of us who knew her at the time realized she would be im on of Opera's brightest stars. Amazingly she did nt particualrly WANT to sing opera back then. Her heart's desire a the time was to do wxactlt what she does so butifully on this video. WI knew her, she wanted most of all to sing AMERICAN MUSICALCOMEDY, Perhaps that's why she was so VERY good at it? Hard to believe her singing career asa lyr-coloratua mezzo has been over for qute some time already She was such a GREAT Cenrentolla.

From Wikipedia: "On July 10, 2007, Hadley sustained a catastrophic brain injury after apparently shooting himself in the head with an air rifle at his home in Clinton Corners, New York.[9] Hearing the shot, his fiancée called 911.[10] Hadley was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York where CAT scans and X-rays showed severe brain injury; he was put on life support.[11] On July 16, he was taken off life support.[12] Hadley died two days later." Only make believe I love you
Only make believe that you love me
Others find peace of mind in pretending
    Couldn't you? Couldn't I? Couldn't we
Make believe our lips are blending
In a phantom kiss or two or three?
Might as well make believe I love you
For to tell the truth, I do
The game of just supposing is the sweetest game I know
Our dreams are more romantic than the world we see
And if the things we dream about don't happen to be so
    That's just an unimportant technicality
Though the cold and brutal fact is
You and I have never met
We need not mind conventions, P's and Q's
If we put our thoughts in practice
    We can banish all regret
    Imagining most anything we choose
We could make believe I love you
Only make believe that you love me
Others find peace of mind in pretending
    Couldn't you? Couldn't I? Couldn't we
Make believe our lips are blending
In a phantom kiss or two or three?
Might as well make believe I love you
For to tell the truth, I do

I believe that spiritual guidance could have helped him. but was never sought, even friends could have helped him, but no one recommended it. In reading an article about the cause of his death, it seemed that he was alone to solve his problems. I know prayers could have helped him. Perhaps he thought of himself as a failure (this, from reading the cause of his death) and he suffered alone. He had a beautiful voice and very happy when he performed.

Dina Lombos I was very surprised to hear about his death about a year ago. I have heard from many psychiatrist say when a Entertainer commit suicide it's all due to depression. When they around people hey seem very happy go lucky but deep inside they are not happy. They also say the same time suicide is the only solution for them because of their mental torment. Many people have financial problems or bad marriages Etc. But deep depression it's something that even the best of psychiatrist cannot cure or help someone that is deeply depressed. Anthony Bourdain is a perfect example. Another one is Robin Williams. Even the people that were closest to him did not see any signs of suicide or depression. It's a terrible hunting disease and it's not normal 2 want to take your own life we are created to live. I was in the medical field before I retired my VP that I reported to her mother took her life and hung herself in the garage. She had so much to live for. My boss took it very hard she found her. All these individuals that I had mentioned we're not under psychiatric care. I also read that Jerry Hadley was not under psychiatric care. All we can do is be really kind to each other and get to know the special individuals better so gifted and be kind to them. My dad always said that you can tell when someone is deeply depressed by looking into their eyes. Someone who wants to be the center of attention. He was right. His Uncle committed suicide and he was the life of the party. But my grandfather could see it in his eyes that he was not totally happy. Just something I wanted to share with all of you. It's an ugly world and sometimes we cannot do anything to prevent it. I apologize if I offended you and anyway. Sincerely Arnold Bourbon Amaral
