    Having jumped that King Air and several others dozens of times, I can tell you there is nothing quite like being in free fall with the airplane you just left nose down at your speed, no more than 100 feet away.

    When I went tandem hang-gliding in Nags Head, as we pulled up we saw the little ultralight towing a glider up over the airport. Then my friend said... we might not be going today.... as we watched the ultralight roll over into this death spiral looking dive. Turns out he was just getting back on the ground as fast as possible to hook up the next glider.

      It's called a Bailey-Moyes Dragonfly, it's a fully aerobatic hang glider tug. Fantastic flying machine. It probably belongs to the Kitty Hawk Kites hang gliding operation.

    I am and have always been afraid of heights. Unfortunately for me when I joined the military my specialty required jump school. Everyday of that course was the worst day of my life. Due to the mental stress and anxiety of jumping I would pass out on the ride up. Till this day I can't keep my eyes open on a regular flight while knowing I'll be walking off just as I had walked on. Static line was simple I could close my eyes then open them once the chute opened, or didn't open (always take a reserve even on the low level jumps). Free fall was a different animal. I would freak out on exit but, besides from the wind hitting your face at 80-120mph, there is nothing to feel. Its great! All together (service included) I'm a little over 600 jumps.... I do it every now and then just to keep my fears in check.

    • @artist4truth
      @artist4truth 5 лет назад +4

      Same here. I am terrified of heights. They said I would loose that fear. 5 military jumps, and 1117 sport skydives later, still terrified of heights except when I have a rig on.

      Totally understand. I hate cleaning gutters because of the height. However, I have no trouble with climbing on the outside of an Otter at 14.5k feet. I do remember being a little freaked out at climbing out of the basket during a balloon jump until I realized I had my rig on and was going to jump anyways.

      Connor Young - Ya done great! I'm old enough to be her grandpa, but I sure admired her steely nerves! It was obvious once she was suited up a nd had her chute on she has no visible doubts about jumping! When I was her age I talked 2 friends into jumping the same time I did. 1 brought his new wife, I will never forget her! When we had our chutes on before getting on the plane, another instructor noticed she had a little flap loose so he told her and started tucking it in (it was a non issue far as safety anyway) well she FREAKED OUT!! Told him to get away from her and "nobodys touching my equipment unless its my instructor" !! She was brave just to go with us, maybe more so to go inspite of her fear, to top it off her husband wanted to jump with me and my buddy so she ended up having to jump on a load with no one she knew. They're not married any more btw lol. Keep her happy Conner and good luck to you both!!!

    If you have the opportunity you should do your AFF Level 1 sometime. It is the first jump in getting you licence but lets you appreciate a lot better what it really is to skydive than a tandem does. It would be from normal jump altitudes (12 - 15k) and would involve you having your own parachute with 2 instructors, who have their own parachutes too. You all jump out together and they hold, guide and correct you in freefall before pull height. After that they then talk you down on the radio on your own canopy :)

    That chopping of engine power and diving for the ground is something that you really shouldn't do with a piston engine aircraft. Going from high power climg to no power decent in a quick manner is terrible for shock cooling the engines. They don't like that and may let you know with short cylinder life.
    Doesn't both turbines though.

    It's the biggest what the hell moment of your life, your first jump. You're letting go and turning your life over to fate which is very hard for people who are in control to their core. I was cold too. But you feel so alive when you land. I was high for days. People are either hell no, or maybe on jumping. Kudos to you for getting from the hell no side to giving it a try. Sounds like you are glad you did it.

    • @CGoody564
      @CGoody564 6 лет назад +1

      You are coming out at a similar airspeed the plane is moving at. For the same reason bombers have to compensate their trajectory for their airspeed, you shouldn't worry about the tail smacking you in the head.

    • @NetAndyCz

    • @Legotruck82
      @Legotruck82 6 лет назад

      Tandems normally open higher than regular sports jumpers (5000ft vs 3500ft) and reach the ground last. You can hit the tail if you jump up on exit, if the plane is diving/carrying too much airspeed, or inflating a tracking or wingsuit off the door.

    I loved my skydiving tandem. We jumped at 12'000ft. When you jump out of the plane it's really jumping into the void, like diving off a high cliff and you feel that scary lurch. But then you settle into your terminal velocity and you're just "floating" in mid air, the only thing telling you you're falling is the wind in your face and the ground getting slowly closer. Then there is the canopy opening and you get to fly the parachute. I have to go back one day and get my solo jumps :) Great Video!

    Steve - Great to find this in my subscriber feed this morning right after you posted it yesterday, because this summer I'm making good on my 5 year promise to take my son (same name as you!) tandem jumping for his 18th birthday. I spent at least 45 minutes pausing and rewinding on this 16 minute video. I will use parts 1 (haven't watched yet) and 2 of this series for my son's first introduction to tandem jumping. I tandem jumped once in 1989 and the memory is still vivid in my mind after nearly 30 years. The instructor had to whack me a couple of times to let go of the Cessna's wing strut. I think I dented the aluminum with my grip on it. Fabulous footage and engaging story here, this is an awesome video!

    Your videos are so well done they're a pleasure to watch!
    I definately related to your anxiety about jumping lol! In the 80s I talked a couple of friends into jumping with me. After our 1st jump I was the only one to go again. I was impressed with the young lady that works with you! She has nerves of steel! She didnt seem intimidated at all by the prospect of going out the door at 20k feet! My 1st jump was only 3k feet, static line on old military t10 chute that comes down like a brick. The pilot and owner where we jumped was not so awe inspiring, he landed the plane after dropping jumpers at 12k while we were training and when he got out of the plane I heard him say "I hate flying to 12,000 on a hang over" !!! That got us all looking at each other wuth a big WTF look on our faces! Glad you got down safely, you had a great time great landing too! Standup was perfect.

    Wouldn´t do it myself, hats off! As a flyboy I think I´m not crazy enough to jump out of a perfectly working airplane. Although I´ve made thousands of flights wearing a parachute.

    Curious question. I am a jump pilot myself and VFR clearance can be a struggle at times. Was there any talk about that, and how do you think he handled legal cloud clearance? What is the expectation with that? Obviously some DZs can be about the bottom-line, and legality may come 2nd to getting the jumps done. At least in my experience.

    Yeah! Did this, too! (only from 14,000 though) And you're right - the edge moment when you look down... holy sh... but I will do it again, for sure!

    Steve, what in the h....? You nuts? What did the Mrs., say? You have more nerve than I do. Now your hooked & will want to do it again I bet. Has Jordan jumped before? Stay with flying planes.

    At our Dropzone, we used to get the pilots to jump. Its the only way they can really understand. I cant jump now because of medical reasons (motorcycle crash, multiple back fractures), but every time I hear a plane fly past on a sunny day, I long to get my knees in the breeze again............. Blue skies and well done on the jump.

    Nice! Now you know why the birds sing! If you want to experience the elements you have to get out of the vehicle! Blue skies!

    I got a ride from Yorkton, Saskatchewan to Edmonton, Alberta in a King Air after fracturing my spine in two places. Those air ambulance guys are beyond professional. Considering my situation, I didn't enjoy the flight as much I would have liked, but they were happy to answer all my questions. I even convinced them to pull some G's, after telling them that I didn't think I would get to ride in as cool a plane as that Beech again. That held true until I got a couple of flights around the Vancouver area in an RV-8 that I helped rivet the main spar on. THAT little gem was a true aviation sports car. Thanks for all your videos, Steve.

    So glad you jumped. It is a rush. As both a pilot and sky diver there is nothing better then jumping out of a perfectly good airplane!!! Ok maybe a smooth cross wind landing.

    Congratulations! I think all pilots should make at least one jump. It makes aerodynamic theory real in ways a book never will. And, flying the canopy isn't too different from dead stick flying.

    I work in fire and rescue and I would much rather run into a burning building with a questionable structural integrity than jump out of an airplane. Good job for taking the jump, Steve. I'm having a slight anxiety attack just watching you fall. Hahaha.

    I have to agree with everyone else... Jordan needs to be in front of the camera! Super cute and very personable. I would be honored to know someone like her. Secondly, after working on aircraft for about 30 years now... I can honestly say from what I saw. There is no way in hell I would ever get in one of their planes without a parachute on! That Kingair was a horrible junker. (and I'm pretty liberal when it comes to older ugly planes.) Their operation looks to be yet another "money turn, money turn, money turn" aircraft be damned, on a wing and prayer operation. Like sooo meny other near bankrupt parachute operators. Its only about how meny people they can get through the door and money they can make. Parachuter's (money) first, everything else including aircraft airworthiness secondary. The gear issues you had in the Beech 18 also says A LOT about their operation. Yeah, he's a great pilot, but when you don't maintain your aircraft as a first priority, that's a huge problem.

    So that's what was going on. I guess there was an airshow or something because I saw the Gold Seal DC3 fly over my house several times one day about a week and a half ago. (I live inside the class Charlie airspace for NWA Regional airport, XNA) didn't know what it was doing I figured that ATC had it in a holding pattern or something.

    If anything was going to convince me to skydive, this would be it. But I’m still in the “Why jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane?” camp!
