Larry King: You did comedy, I'm told
Hugh Laurie: *flashes back to his entire decades-long career in Britain, his working relationship with Rowan Atkinson, and his lifelong friendship and multiple projects with Stephen Fry*
Hugh Laurie: *realises most people don't even know he's British*
Hugh Laurie: Well, yes, I did a bit of comedy here and there, sure
Just a woefully ignorant question and his reaction to Fry's name drop just made it even more upsetting. Why do people consider Larry King a good interviewer?
@@SasidharPamganamamula He doesn't fake laugh at everything the guest says?
@@AC3handle Fallon is annoying but at least a bit more informed. As an interviewer, you're required to be a bit more informed than what King showed here.
I know right?!
@@SasidharPamganamamula 13:52
I love how gracious and kind Hugh is in the face of Larry's ignorance. He seemed to enjoy himself immensely, once he realized that Larry knew nothing about him. What a charming, humble and intelligent guy!
I was so taken abak lol. You'd know him from house and now he is shifting that focus to music... I know his first album came out late in house but his acting career was long before it.
I can't believe Larry King didn't know or do any research about Fry and Laurie....
he never does. watch his interview of Seinfeld
That's part of the charm of the interviews, it's like a 'regular' person asking stuff u dont know about. feels very personal, and that's the point. : )
I can’t wrap my head around his voice. On House, his American accent sounds so natural. His voice is a lot deeper here, and obviously British. Hahaha
Same here! Just now finished the series, watched the “Swan Song” epi,my mouth fell open! I kinda wish I’d never seen it. Usually love an accent but it just doesn’t fit,lol
there's not actor that fits his role more than Hugh Laurie fits House
It sounds weird, but somehow that's true 👌
He *is* House.
idk, RDJ and heath ledger are pretty up there (iron man and joker)
Its hard to think of two more diverse character roles than Greg House and Bertie Wooster.
I actually think it would be very interesting to see Bryan Cranston do a similar character to House. I could only IMAGINE if there was some sort of Breaking Bad\House crossover or just getting Hugh Laurie and Bryan Cranston together.
Outer Hugh: Well, it wasn’t sudden
Inner Hugh: This man has no idea who I am...
Right?
Hugh Laurie does the best American accent --for years I thought he was a little known American actor who got a lucky break.
Check out Idris Elba
on "The Wire" and the guy who played Al Capone in "Boardwalk Empire".
@@Rodness28 The BIG difference is Hugh Laurie did his accent for over ten series, consistently.
@@RezbisGrappleStrike i cant check right now, but i think those 3 shows were 6-8 seasons. No 10 seasons of House right?
@@Rodness28 there are 8 seasons of House
@@Rodness28 Stephen Graham was Al Capone, also in The Irishman. His scouse accent is so broad, Joe Pesci asked him to speak in character so that he could understand him.
I could listen to Hugh all day and night; he is so interesting, and like his friend and colleague, Stephen Fry he carries his intelligence so effortlessly
"Did you do comedy?"
Somewhere, Stephen Fry is readying a sword to run Larry King through with.
Seriously, how can you ask that?..
@@SoulSonder26 Larry King was famous for doing no research on his guests
I assume that this was a style choice by Larry king. I always liked that he didn’t assume that his audience already knew his interviewee and he asked questions from the point of you of the audience.
Saw this after I posted my own reply. Yeah.
I love how Hugh really wants to focus on the music, and Larry King keeps on redirecting the convo to House. 😅He looks so attentive and empathic that LK might be having a hard time. What a true pro for sitting through.✨Always one of my favorite people. Cheers.
I'm still in mourning that "House" is no longer aired.😢. Was my favorite show ever
Of course he was great as House, but his comedy with Stephen Fry was even better. I have cried of laughter because of those two.
Ok, RUclips recommendations, you got me, I'm gonna watch some House
Did you? What do you think about the Show?
@@exp4ndable I did, I knew the show already. The last two seasons were terrible, but up until then I enjoyed the show very much.
I feel Ya. That's how I got into the show too. That said, glad I did. I enjoyed it immensely. I'm glad You liked it as well.
I'm bingeing House right now, riveting, great cast, Hugh Laurie is out- standing and hot too!
Please do and stick with it
Larry King: Amazed that Hugh Laurie even knows Stephen Fry.
Also Larry King, asking a British comedian: So, did you do British humor?🧐🧐🧐🧐
Love, love, LOVED “House!” Laurie made him so real. Wish the show could’ve gone on forever. I have Fibromyalgia, & when the symptoms are at their worst I tell people I long for a Dr. House to figure it all out.
I want Hugh to release another album. Let Them Talk was amazing. I didn’t know I would like Blues so much until I heard his covers from that album. Unchain my Heart was also really good.
In 2021~I'm just finding out that this man is English; with an accent, no less! I STILL love his work on House~CHEERS!! :)
Hugh Laurie is amazing! He is someone I'd LOVE to meet and learn from. He has such a creative mind & heart.
Didn't it rain is an amazing album. Every year in the colder months I put it on when I cook dinner and it makes me feel like everything is going to be okay.
he's such a good actor, it's like 2 different people with the same face
Exactly!!!!!!
"Everyone lies" is my fav quote.
I'm still in love with Hugh Laurie in 2021! Wishing Larry a speedy recovery from COVID.
You do know that US did not discover Hugh Laurie...... And he's ours. 🏴
Hugh Laurie-Award winning actor, author, musician, director, parent.
WHAT CAN'T HE DO?!
He's so freaking awesome!😁
Multi-lingual & champion rower.
One of the best actors ever
So many actors get stuck in between a character and oneself, especially after acting the same character for so many years. It's nice that Hugh Laurie doesn't remind me of house at all, only his face. Great mind..
So true, a true actor. You act the part, become the part while in character, and then cut back to being "you". You're right, so many actors slowly become their characters, it's sad.
A great interview with two amazing people. Hugh and Stephen Fry back in the 1980’s were brilliant. House was a fantastic show and I never thought about him as a comedian on Blackadder or his standup. And of course most American viewers didn’t know he was English, his accent was that good, which he kept up during the entire day. A bit like David Tennant with the doctor.
I just watched the whole series from Dec.2022-feb 2023. I have to say I was very sad with season 8. Makes me want to go back and watch the earlier seasons where everyone was happier. But House has a way of growing on you.
I binged the whole series twice in recent months. Season 8 was definitely different without Cuddy, but I still loved it. House in prison, Foreman taking over as Dean of Medicine, Wilson’s cancer, House doing the chemo at his apartment and faking his death in the finale so he can hang out with Wilson was wonderful.
It ended perfectly
i can never fully recognize Hugh Laurie without the stubble. i've seen House so much that to me he just looks weird when he's clean shaven
When you forget that Hugh Laurie is British
The whole time I was waiting for him to do the house voice because I've watched house for a long time and for most of it I didn't even know he was British
13:52 You did comedy I am told? Hugh's face is hilarious, trying not to laugh 😂
Actually find it embarrassing - Hugh has been around for years and was very much a part of my youth growing up; Fry and Laurie, Blackadder, Jeeves and Wooster and so on.
Larry King: *oblivious*
@@harrycundall7821 That is the best word to describe him, and he was uber popular. Says a lot about the USA.
I knew Hugh Laurie from Stuart Little and my late father loved House.
Just so you know, this is not a new interview. Didn't It Rain came out 6 years ago. (And the description says the actual date)

While I watch this, I can't help but expect House to rip into Larry :) What a talent!
Larry King gets away with being clueless.
This is the USA.
he has some vivid blue eyes..
It’s so annoying to read the comments because even I as an American has seen Laurie in A bit of Frye and Laurie, & Blackadder… I’ve known about his long career for years. How could people not know. I loved him in House but I watched House because I loved Hugh’s other work
Larry King didnt do his homework, He should have known about Laurie & Fry.
At least a bit!
@@thebeetalls I see what you did there...
And Jeeves and Wooster - the TV series he did in the eighties. He did a lot of singing and playing the piano in it.
And he should have known about BlackAdder too.
How is King so wildly unprepared for this!?
That is normal from what I've seen.
Larry never prepared. He claimed that way he could be surprised like his audience.
Music is the highest form of Art
awwhh, he'll forever be Lord Percy from black adder :)
edit* i mean prince george :[
Bertie Wooster!
King: "5 years.."
Laurie: "...8 years"
*OOF*
Larry King just throwing questions like tennis, "let me go through the list and get it done"
I've never thought he was any good at this and he's often cringe worthy.
Mr. Laurie, I love you 5% more everytime I hear you speak; Techno!
I'm an American who never left the country and even I knew about Fry and Laurie...How did Larry become so famous for interviews while being so clueless?
I suspect Larry was being droll. He seems to have a twinkle in his eye with many of his questions.
Very little preparation and quite a bit of interrupting on Larry's part. I love Hugh though.
i cannot believe that Larry King didn't know about Fry and Laurie google it for a great laugh
Larry actually steps on Hugh’s replies. It’s annoying.
17:55 Larry not sensing Hugh's sarcasm
Someone should tell Hugh Laurie his American accent was nearly flawless. A few times I caught him pronouncing the long E in been, or his rhythm might be a bit off.
March 2024! I just started watching house and got hooked! love him and even more that he actually britsh omg!
If yah get the opportunity list to him sing 😊
I miss Larry so, so much. By far one of the best... Is it possible for the new generation of hosts to learn that they need to let the guest talk, perhaps let them answer the question they just asked?
exact thing i noticed the moment the video started, dont even think im gonna finish it cause of how painful it is you can just see hughs expression each time hes about to finish answering then immediately gets cut off not to mention the other comments saying how he barely researched to not know the fact hugh laurie started his entire career on comedy since the 80s and only started doing drama with house lmao
Larry King must love to interview people like Hugh - who are just themselves.....

Legend!
Hugh is such a fascinating guy that Larry actually comes across with almost youthful enthusiasm
I love his hair
Very much enjoyed this interview. Was especially interested in hearing that performing as an actor was putting on a mask, and performing as a musician was exposing the self.
Could have been such an interesting interview if Larry had allowed Hugh to answer instead of constantly interrupting and talking over him.
He is pretty amazing
I mean, at least give the guy a handshake and thank him for being on the show before ending it.
We STILL watch House! Neverending comedy mix with Hugh Laurie, and acast of characters that make us "think"
I have never binge watched anything and really looked down on nine watching all together. This is the first TV series I did get tempted to binge watch on the go so to say.
I am now after finishing watching every single episode ( and yes, it made me think and laugh out loud. The friendships that developed warmed my heart. I loved the musical appearances and the amazing linguistic skills that House has. All the things I love I found. Also things that I don't love were there but it showed the fallout of these, instead of glorifying them.
I find him such of joy
Some time ago, 6-7 of my friends told me that I have to watch House M.D. because the main character behaves exactly like me. I started watching the show and I'm getting proud as I'm realizing what a compliment that was.
Not something to brag about
I am a musician going on 60 years. It always amuses me watching, for example a Bossa Nova guitarist, suddenly a faraway look in his eyes, and the Blue Note emerges.
Nice interview.
Damn i could listen to these two personalities for hours ... nice interview
“You did comedy?” You could say that Larry my friend
🏆👍 for Hugh
Not entirely sure how it is that Larry never happened to see any of A Little Bit of Fry & Laurie, or, for that matter, any of The Black Adder/Blackadder, with Rowan Atkinson. Mind boggling.
Larry defended American ignorance. Maybe that's why he was so popular.
Is there a longer version of this interview?
Good on you Larry. What a wonderful thing to wake up to and find in my feed. I'm glad to see Hugh hasn't aged a bit and I'm glad to see his love of jazz was more than just an act in House.
The interview is from 2013 😉

Hugh Laurie was one of the "Badduns" in the live action version of "101Dalmations".
He forgot to mention he's also a published author.

Larry misses all his jokes. Hugh is just brilliant all around. Wow. Asks about how much money? Come on Larry. OK 11:00 minutes in and I cant listen to Larrys questions anymore.
I'll never understand why anyone thought Larry was good at this. It must be an old ignorant style that old ignoramuses' love.
Sure wish they would bring House back. Loved that show.😂
But i also love Hugh Lauries music he is fantastic ❤❤❤
RIP Larry King
He was great in BlackAdder… very smart guy, he was onto every snide diversion King had ready for him
Watched the interview only from respect to Hugh Laurie. Larry King however seems to have done very little work preparing for the interview or reacting to the flow of the conversation
Larry King I just about know his name but from what I see of him here, then I am really glad that we don't see him or his show this side of the pond.
I need some new Hugh Laurie music soon!!!
Larry can you please let the man finish his answer before you interruption him by asking another question?
Hugh used to be a comedian. He used to be part of a double act with Stephen Fry. They were brilliant.
Edit- must watch whole video first. But he didn’t discuss Blackadder, which included Rowan Atkinson (mr bean).
And what about Bertie? ❤️
Blackadder also had Stephen Fry as General Melchett.
Fantastic interview as always Mr. King.
No it wasn't. He didn't know Hugh Laurie at all. Boring.
@@heatheryovanoff6361 I thought it was fantastic because I am fond of Laurie and his accent and his character. Yes it was, in my opinion and im taste.

"you did comedy, I am told" - the cringe smile of High at that time is everything, considering how amazing and long a career he has had as a comedy performer.
Larry King often didn't know who his guests really were. I remember at the very height of Seinfeld series popularity he had Jerry on his show and had no idea who he even was to the point that Jerry actually asked him if he knew he was and if he was familiar with the show, which was the no1 rated TV show for 9 seasons.. How Larry ever got that job I'll never know in a million years. He was so bad at it, it was laughable. No personality, looks, or charisma of any kind either. It was amazing he was kept on for that long.
I do find the American standard interview method of question, question, question, quick we’ve only got 8 minutes (even when you have 20) a bit tiring. This was especially painful as Larry King just seemed to have bullet points and he was sticking to them no matter what.
It’s why RUclips long form chats are so much more satisfying.
I love Hugh. I loved Jonathan Miller too for similar reasons. The best of British intelligent well educated men, who think critically with self deprication and great humour. Makes them irresistible to women. Brains win every time on the attractive monitor for me! Also Hugh has a v sexy voice!😂
Some interviewers either will deliberately not researched or subject or act like they have not researched their subject in order to remain on the same knowledge base as most of their audience.
07:25 talk about House
Watching this interview I am surprised and disappointed at how little Larry King knows about Hugh!
I don't understand why Larry King is so regarded. He often doesn't do his homework on his guests - not knowing of Fry & Laurie? And wasting time on doing accents, while they could retrospect on House M. D., struggles of depression and stuff? Regularly interrupting, asking trivial questions...
