LEGO Stickers Are Secretly UNDERRATED. Here's Why

  • Although it may seem like the sole purpose of stickers is just a cheap way out for LEGO instead of printing, there may be certain cases (however small) where it's more beneficial to have stickers included. It is important to note that for things such as Star Wars UCS sets or other expensive premium products, printing should almost be always used, as the ways in which stickers are beneficial as mentioned in the video are not applicable for such sets.

    Yeah, I think play sets that kids would likely buy should have stickers, but display sets targeted to adults should have prints.

      @@OlegoThe reality is that it's a cost cutting measure, Lego doesn't give you stickers for any of these reasons.
      Why does my UCS Venator have no printed pieces? It's 650$ and I'm sure as shit not breaking it down into parts

    Honestly I think the Commander Fox issue is more of an inditement on Lego’s poor quality control than it is on the benefits of stickers.
    If you have some Lego Minecraft Steve mini-figures, you can compare the ones from the original 2014 wave to the newer ones, and see how much more pale and worse the skin tone on his face has gotten.
    I think I first started noticing this around 2017 or so, so I think they either switched the machines or stopped putting some sort of extra layer of ink.
    Anyway, great video as always!

      @Olego  3 месяца назад +1

      Honestly true, I don't see LEGO going back and improving the quality anytime soon. As a result, stickers can be seen as the "lesser of two evils" alternative, but definitely not a perfect solution that solves any root issues.

      Yeah, there is no reason a print has to be that poor, and the alignment issues can also be fixed, some other building bricks companies pull this off perfectly. It's more a matter of Lego willing to go the extra mile and go back to "only the best is good enough" motto, which they originated from

    As someone who never ignored stickers in sets because I never cared or had many issues with it, I can say it has some value. Many stickers are very useful for MOCs and details, specially for my favorite: the cluttered detailed cyberpunk/fantasy displays, with a lot of room for all kind of visuals only some stickers can provide.

      Even if you like the design, having it as a sticker lets you use it on a different piece.
      Want to make a color-swapped version of an official set? If all the decorations are prints, you’re probably out of luck. But if they’re stickers, particularly clear-backed stickers, you could choose to not put them on the original, and instead put them on different-colored parts from your collection.
      Or save a sticker to put on a completely different piece to add some interesting detail to your own creation later. Nnenn was a master of that.

    3:04 BTW, one of the first things I started sorting out as a kid was printed and stickered pieces. That way you don’t have to worry about grabbing a printed piece when you don’t want one, and you don’t have to dig through everything to find that cool computer console for your spaceship. It also means the printed and stickered pieces don’t get dug through nearly as much, and most of my printed and even stickered pieces still look great decades later.
    Even if you don’t have the interest, patience, or containers to sort the rest of your parts, I highly recommend finding a small container of some sort to put all the printed and stickered parts in.

    3:45 is probably the strongest argument for stickers because the prints are just not consistent enough (although stickers often don't have good color match either). The way I see it, the core difference is simplicity and durability vs control and versatility. Ideally you obviously want the ease of use and longevity of prints, but as quality stands right now, Lego doesn't do well enough with the color match and alignment, and instead the stickers overall often have a slight edge over the prints imo. Essentially, prints have a much higher ceiling for quality but Lego isn't near top quality, whereas stickers have a lower ceiling for how good they can get, but Lego produces relatively good stickers if you ask me (as a gunpla builder, I've seen way worse)

    A cool use for them I would like to see is cutting the stickers carefully with other stickers from a multitude of sets to recreate detailing from unlicensed franchises accurately.
    While illegal (maybe?) but technically official. A good example would be to make a real world flag from cutting stripes or shapes from the correct color of sticker. Also makes expensive prints less needed with a little precision and dedication.

    Good Video, but in my Opinion Stickers are still always inferior to Prints. Two easy steps easily combat the Advantages you mentioned in this Video.
    First higher the quality of the Prints. The spacing on the sides of prints is completely fixed by many other manufacturers of these types of bricks like Cobi. This step would also remove the Problem of the base color shining through, as Lego just needs to print 2-3 times on one brick, like other manufacturers.
    Second Lego could just put in multiple Pieces where one is printed while the other is not. Lego is incredibly expensive as it is compared to other manufacturers that also have higher quality bricks, so they could easily pack in more Bricks without losing that much Profit.
    In Addition to that, Stickers also have the problem of having a different background color than the original brick they are placed on.

    • @Olego
      @Olego  3 месяца назад

      I would also like to see LEGO implement these changes and they would certainly make prints better than stickers 100% of the time. However as it currently stands, I’m not sure how much LEGO is willing to prioritize these changes, so stickers still have certain advantages in niche cases in the status quo. I would definitely love to see these changes put into place though and make stickers obsolete

    • @rc-fannl7364

      My thoughts exactly. If Lego really wants the best for the customer, there are ways. Just like with big windscreens until recently being packed with other pieces, and inevitable getting scratched. It can be prevented.

    I particularly like stickers when the decoration is something I’m unlikely to reuse and the part is new or rare. For me, Speed Champions is the perfect example. I mostly build scifi space stuff, or sometimes D&D-esque fantasy, so I’ve got no use for a bunch of modern-day brand stickers. But I end up buying a lot of Speed Chanpions sets because they’re often the first to get several new pieces each wave and they use really clever building techniques. So when there’s a new 1x1 double-curved corner piece in light bley, that’s awesome! 😃 But when it only comes with a headlight print on it, that cuts down its usefulness a fair bit. ☹️ But at least that’s something I might be able to reuse on a spaceship, if not as a headlight then maybe as a control console or bit of engine greebling.
    What the heck am I going to do with a cool new slope with an Aramco or Oakley logo on it, in my D&D tower or not-dystopian scifi builds‽
