I arrieved in Berlin 7 August 1961, five days before the border was closed. I was with the American Army helicopter unit at Tempelhof. Stationed there for 2 years. Married a German girl from west Berlin. Marriaged lasted 51 years, until God took her home. Good video
My mom went to Checkpoint Charlie with me (only a year old in 1986) and my dad. Twenty years later she went back and was so humbled my dad actually talked to me about it. Freedom will always follow those who believe in it.
Did you go straight to Australia, choosing it as your ultimate destination or did you just "end up" over there? Almost seems as if you wanted to get as far away from the tyranny as possible.
I could just imagine how miserable you would be if you stayed in East Berlin. Luckily you and I get to enjoy the tyrant free Germany. Once the virus ends I'm coming back
I spent a couple of weeks in GDR in 1987..and i can remember that some strange feeling of rebel was in the air... It all ended two years later.. But this is another story... Very interesting video... It seems so different now...
Two different reasons for the walls, one cogent the other not. Building a wall to keep out drugs, potential religious radicals and criminals is cogent.
This was off the Hook to view because I always wonder what happen to the original wall and if they broke all of it down or kept it in storage or have it in a memorial museum that exhibit that cold war era etc... I see my third option was correct and when I traveled to Berlin seriously, I would like to visit that museum and take photos etc. Great video and tour for us RUclips viewers to watch, thanks- thumbs up for the footages.
How many people in that area made a fortune selling chunks of the wall? It seems to me soon after that happened, every desk has a concrete chunk souvenir from the wall on it. Somebody made a fortune shipping concrete chunks.
At the beginning is Bernauer Strasse. There are still some church bells left over, partly as a memorial to the church that the East German government demolished.

People have sewn their very own balloons once or twice. As mentioned, you couldn't just straight up buy an aerial vehicle for a myriad of reasons. All that's left is building your own but good luck keeping that under the blanket under an authoritarian regime with one of the most intricate surveillance apparati known to man. I don't know how accurate this is but I once heard that it's been estimated that about 5% of the populace were "unofficial employees" of the Ministry of State Security ("Stasi") with many more being unrecorded. Everyone was a potential spy out to gain favors in the system by ratting out their neighbors, co-workers, sometimes even family members and friends. That's why most people who thought about fleeing the country were either caught by the system before even attempting their escape or never planned anything in the first place in fear of being discovered and persecuted. That means being left to die in the darkest cell under heavy torture or straight up being sent to Siberia. If you owned a plane in the East before the socialists tightened their grip, you were either part of the regime or they confiscated it. Simple as that.
I don't know where you're from but thankfully, this is being taught to us in school. We're aware of the cruelties of authoritarianism, having seen both sides of the same coin: fascism and socialism. Otherwise most of us would probably be just as unaware as you are since apparently, a few decades is enough to forget the cruelties of the past.
Berlin was entirely located within East Germany, but had «western» sectors. Think of it as an embassy, which is considered US (or Canadian or German or French) soil, even though it is in another country.
My first thought was about this wall, when Pres. Trump suggested building a wall between the USA and Mexico. It's shame that it will be a massive waste of money, and a futile concept.
@@mchlbk Agreed, every country has borders that have varying levels of security, ranging from tight control (ie, Russia or between the Koreas) to nearly non-existent (ie, internal Schengen borders in Europe) intended to keep unwanted people out while allowing good people in at authorized entry ports. The Berlin Wall/Berliner Mauer was the direct opposite, being built solely to keep their own people in, like with a maximum-security prison.
