  • In this quick tech how to video, I’m going to show you how to migrate all your data, apps, and personal info from an old Mac computer to a new one.
Migrating to a new Mac is super simple nowadays, and doesn’t even require tethering the machines together with cables like in the past. All this is done now with the built in Apple Migration Assistant.
In this example, I’ll be transferring everything over from my old MacBook Pro to a new one. There were a couple things I did first, and depending on the software you have installed, you may want to do also. For instance, if you use anything that requires you to deactivate a license first inside the software before you uninstall, you want to do that. Nowadays it’s not so common, but there may be a few things out there that still require it. Also, I use Adobe for all my graphics and video editing, and I read there was an issue moving from the Intel based Mac’s to the M1 chips. So, I completely uninstalled my Creative Suite before I did this, knowing I’d do a fresh install on the new computer.
To get started, put both the old Mac and the new one near each other to easily control both when needed. Make sure both machines are plugged in to a power source.
Here on the left, I have the old machine, and the new on the right. Open the lid on the new machine and you’ll get the welcome and language selection screen. Choose your preferred language, and then your country or region.
On the next page, choose any accessibility features you’d like, or choose not now.
On the next screen, select your wi-fi network, and enter your password. Make sure this is on the same network that your old machine will be on.
After that, review the data and privacy policy and hit continue.
Here’s where we select where we’re migrating from. You can choose to migrate from another Mac, time machine backup, or another startup disk, or from a Windows PC. I’ll choose from a Mac and hit continue.
Now we have to start the migration assistant on the old Mac. On the old machine, go to the Utilities folder and open migration assistant, or just search it in spotlight search at the top.
Once the program opens, hit continue and enter your password to close all open apps and start the assistant.
Next, choose to another Mac, and hit continue.
It will then look on the network for any computers also using migration assistant. On your new machine, choose your old computer and hit continue.
Confirm the code is correct between the two Mac’s and on your old machine hit continue. It will then connect the two machines through a peer to peer connection.
It will then calculate everything that it will copy over, and if you don’t want to bring everything, you can uncheck boxes, or filter through the dropdowns. When you’re ready, hit continue.
Select the user and give them a new admin password for the new machine. I just kept this the same as my old one. Set your password and when you’re ready to start the migration hit continue.
After a few minutes, it will start to the show the transfer progress, and then it will give you an estimate of how long the entire process will take. It ended up taking my transfer about two hours to finish.
After the migration process is finished, your new machine will restart, and when it comes back up, will let you know if there were any issues on the migration summary.
Hit done and then log into your machine like normal. The first time you log in, you will need to enter your Apple ID password, and if you have two factor authentication enabled, will have to do that as well.
Finish up any setups that you have on your machine, like touch ID if you use it, and when you’re done, you’ll be finished and ready to go. The first thing after this that normally do now, is go through all of my programs that I use, and make sure that they’re all activated and registered if they need to be.
And that’s how you use the Apple migration assistant to move from one Mac computer to another.
