  • One way to refresh your windows is with a replacement window product, which is inserted into the old window frame without replacing any of the trim or exposing any of the rough framing of the house*. Another option, as shown in this video, is what Paul calls a 'Full Frame' window replacement: the entire window, including the frame and interior/exterior trim are replaced.
Two major benefits of doing a window replacement this way are:
    1) getting down to the rough framing of the window opening allows for the framing itself to be inspected for any damage or other problems
    2) all the insulation, caulking, and flashing that seals the window into the opening will be replaced as well, providing a totally fresh start with the new window
    Drawbacks:
    1) 'Full Frame' replacement is more costly as a project because of the time and materials involved.
    2) It is more disruptive in the short term to the home.
Deciding which option might be best for your project will likely involve assessing the condition of your current windows (and surrounding trim/framing) as well as considering your budget and design goals. We are committed to finding the best solution that meets the needs of YOUR unique project without pushing you into one method or the other.

Very informative. I'm on the gulf coast and will be installing my impact glass replacement windows the same way. I think in a heavy wind load situation the nailing flange is a better install.

Nice job on sealing up the sides of the window. That looked like a strip of Z flashing on the top of that second window trim.

Good, like the dadoing of the trim to let it sit flush nice detail. Also the use of pvc trim. I'd still nail it in and either fill the holes with filler or caulk.. bit thats me. I would not use silicone around the exposed areas of trim due to paint products not adhering to silicone. Id use a quality paintable caulking like Big Streach or Shermax.

When installing Pella windows, they like us to use their brand of exterior caulking. It is similar to OSI. We stay away from straight latex caulking on the exterior and usually stay away from straight silicone because of the paint issue. Big Stretch is great and we use it a lot on the interior or if we are summer install. We do find Big Stretch performs well once it has a chance to cure for a few weeks. Nailing vs screwing: We screw the exterior trim because we have more adjustment in getting a flush finish and we can cap the screw heads. Cortex makes screws for all kinds of PVC trim. More pricey but worth it!

Why would you flash the bottom of the window? Shouldn’t you allow any water that gets back there a way to get out from the bottom?

Hello - nice work! I'm very interested in ordering those pre-assembled interior tirm frames - how do I go about doing this? Can these interiror tims be built myself from assembly instructions or a pattern? Thanks!

It depends on the manufacturer. In this job, we made all of our own interior trim because the customer had custom interior trim that had to be matched. We always "pre-fab" interior trim as it makes it much easier to install. Many window manufacturer's make their own interior trim and some will just do extension jambs. ProVia has beautiful interior trim and they will paint it or stain it pretty much any color you want.

I'd sure like to see you go through that on a stucco house...

HA! Thankfully, in New England, we do not run into many stucco homes. The process would be much different.
