My grandfather recently passed away and somehow I inherited his yard machine snow thrower. Never used one before and this video was all I needed. Thanks man.

Hello, one of my neighbors threw away a 24in MTD snowblower, yes I live in THAT kind of neighborhood. It appeared to have caught on fire at one time, I suspect someone had the fuel line next to the engine…duh! I am not into gas engines, never have been but I invested in a new carburetor and other items and got it running again. Thank you for the excellent video!

Thanks for the tutorial. I'm using a older Yard Machine MTD 8 HP 24" clearing width model and am not strong enough anymore to start it with the pull cable. I ordered a electric start cable so I can use the push start. Thanks again for the extremely helpful tutorial.

I bought mine used, they did not have the cord, can I use a short extension cord instead?
@@matthewchenevert1376 8 to 10 foot cord 14/16 gauge is recommended. Shorter would not matter but the gauge size does.

My choke is a little wonky but it always starts on the first pull and instantly with the electric start.
Not sure why but it starts and runs better with the choke set just below the little run notch. I bought it used for $200. The guy I bought it from seemed to take care of it but he used ethanol gasoline which I'm not a fan of even though it says right on the gas cap "Ethanol".
How do you feel about ethanol fuel?

I've seen the newer snowblowers have headlights. So I just duct taped a flashlight to mine and now I can throw snow at night.

Running smoother than mine
Try moving the choke lever slowly into the on position and if your machine starts to run better, stop moving the choke lever at this point and get your job finished. This means you have a carburetor issue and you will need to either rebuild it or replace it (the carburetor)

Great video. How do you turn left and right? I purchased one today second hand.
With your muscles! No power steering on this one. Make sure the air in the tires are where they should be. Look on the side wall of the tire for the pressure. Once the tires pressure is correct and you will be using it obviously in the snow it will be much easier!

My parents have been on my case about lowering the snow blower to get to the concrete, but I’m not sure how to do that?

I just inherited a smaller one. 179cc 21in. They have the same controls. However, I have an electric starter and the pull handle. How hard is it to start it up with the pull lever if you don't have an outlet to plug it in?
As long as it’s not too cold and your machine is operating properly. The pull handle works as it should. Many variables though. Cold, how strong you are able to pull the rope, machine in proper running condition. I would suggest, if you can put the machine in a warm environment “heated garage”? That will make the oil a little thinner so the engine will turn over faster, so it will be easier to pull the starter handle.
Might be a silly question but I'm completely new to small engines and want to cover all my bases, recommended gasoline? Could I get this right from a gas station? Or is there a small engine gasoline I should be using
Hi Anthony, Yes, you can use gas from the gas station but as you said there are many products of fuel that will be better to use and you will have less carburetor issues in the off season. I have the same model but without electric cable. I always use pull cable to start and it worked fine till last season. I started off today for the first time this season. When I pulled the cable, it is pulling backward as if there is a blockage but I could not see anything. Any tips or suggestions?

how do you feel about the Powermore engines and the yard machine snow blowers? I just got a great deal on a yard machines snow blower, I paid $516 for the 26" double auger snowblower with the same engine. Thanks in advance for your response.
It is a china engine installed on a MTD snow thrower. Most engines on the smaller snow throwers they are selling come from china and in my opinion, they are ok if you take care of them. You know the old saying, " you get what you pay for". If you live in an area you do not get a lot of snow you should be fine. Just make sure you store it properly, change the engine oil once a year and properly adjust all adjustment to cables, skid shoes, etc. and you should be good!
I also got used yard machine snow blower. 8hp/28. So the number is for speed. But what is the rabbit and turtle throttle for? Just starting engine?
Rabbit = Fast and Turtle = Slow

I’d like to see a video on how to replace the cable for the reverse forward. Mine i think is stretched and will not go all the way left.
Elbowguts not sure what you mean by not going to the left. If your wheels are spinning when you push the drive handle down, you r drive cable is fine.
Johnson's Small Engines sorry.. my speed shifter cable is very tight when i go from reverse to 5th speed. The knob/shifter will not go all the way to the left which i think is reverse 2nd speed.
I would open up the bottom cover between the wheels to see if you have a mouse nest or something binding up on the shaft that makes your shift lever go side to side. That will also give you a sense of how it works by taking that cover.

Is there a neutral setting to move it when it's not running?
If the drive handle is up? and the tire pressure is up? the machine should roll. If both wheels are stuck and it has been sitting for a while? You may have either a very large mouse nest under the transmission area or you may have seized bearings on drive shaft ends. First try putting air in the tires if they are low.
I have the same one ! And it will not start whit the pull or the Electric start

10w30 or 5w30 depending on engine. Your manual should tell you.
My 8hp/24" MTD yard machine snow blower won't start. Is there a fuel valve on this machine? IDK what to do
Most likely the reason why snow throwers don’t run if they have been sitting for a long tine is from fuel going bad inside the carburetor, meaning you may need to rebuild or replace the carburetor but without seeing the machine, that is just a educated guess on what could be wrong with it.
ive got the same machine except all the speeds I wish I had 2 reverse and atleast 3 forward speeds its to slow but I ownly paid 175 dollars it was 1 year old used twice so cant complain

Most likely the carburetor will need to be removed and rebuilt. I have videos on doing that depending on your model.

If you get the part # for the starter, you should be able to find one somewhere on the internet?

Can you send me your model number from the sticker on the rear lower pan near the transmission. If I can get your correct model off of your machine, Then I will be able to get you a part number for the starter.

Most likely due to gas going bad in the carburetor. The carburetor will need to be rebuilt or replaced
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Or just pull the bowl off and clean it out and blow some air in the carb holes.
