Although I did buy an airbrush for scale modeling, I’m amazed at what you can do with one. Maybe one of these days I’ll be able to paint landscapes or something with it.. love the channel and your work. Thanks for your reviews and the amazing paintings you make

Thankyou for your awesome videos! I am also an airbrush fine artist. Your videos have helped me immensely. :-) I had only done an opaque based method before watching your channel but have since adapted many of your ideas and techniques to create my own masterpieces. :-)

Hey Mark, finally cracked the problem with airbrush consistency. Turns out, it was a classic case of 'user error' just like I thought - simple stuff. Being new to airbrushing, I totally missed managing the dry tip, which let a major clog build up. That's why all my airbrushes were acting up. I checked them under the microscope and followed your advice from one of your recent videos. Now I see I was setting myself up for this mess - everything from the paint viscosity, air pressure, to not cleaning the airbrush properly after each use. Thanks a ton for your tips and your videos. Happy New Year!

that's what i want to hear!! glad it was nothing major. Things like that have always helped me. Next time something goes wrong the troubleshooting is 100% easier and you know where to start. Have a very happy New Year Serge!

I've just spoiled my next work by 'overworking' it: I always remember your advise and I am starting each project trying very hard to paint 'light', i.e., with just a little paint, and then erasing /adding layers, as necessary. But that 'necessary' part is so elusive: I often end up with very dark, thick paint that is hard to impossible to erase into and much darker than the original I try to copy.
    Three questions:
-- When is it time to stop 🙂?
-- More practical question: if the details are thin (or small), I have to move the airbrush too close, resulting in a darker than I want lines. Is there a 'trick' to use freehand and still paint small (or thin) details that are light (with stress on 'light')? I use transparent Createx Illustration paints, and diluting them too thin results in 'spiders' when I move too close. Too low of a pressure creates problems, too, not atomizing the paint enough.😞
-- And, finally: erasing into paint creates texture. Totally helpful, when you need the texture. 100% of the details (especially parts of faces) I paint require some adjustment, hence erasure marks -> texture. But what if I need a portrait of a person with a smooth skin? I just started painting and far from the skill level of painting in 'one touch', without the need to go back and erase into the paint a little. Which, however delicate I try to be, adds eraser marks, making the skin look rough, especially in a smaller portraits. Would you have any suggestions?
Sorry for the long question, but I think these are common beginner mistakes that others might also find useful.

I tend to overwork paintings too so I understand what you mean. For spraying a light amount of paint this just takes practice. Try reducing the paint more and try to hold the airbrush farther away and just dust the paint on at 20-25psi. I always try to keep everything lighter than I think it should be. If i think "this probably should be darker", I'm on the right path and stick with it lighter until I get further into the painting.
-For small detail, yes the paint gets darker when you're holding it close (since you are spraying more). This is where shields come in! I'll use the shield to get in the line I want by spraying on the side of the shield to let the overspray dust the canvas, then I'll do the rest freehand. When the airbrush is close using only freehand it's all about trigger control and again it just takes some practice. I pull back the smallest about where paint is barely being sprayed and that usually works.
-What most people do is add white paint into the mixture. This will prevent colors from getting too dark. It's what I did for MANY many years. It's way more forgiving because it will stop your colors from getting too dark. I would suggest trying this out for a while to get more comfortable with the airbrush. Using transparents only is much more difficult, but gives me that control that I can't get with opaques. You can also use this for larger areas on portraits to avoid any texture. No erasing needed! There is the blueshift to deal with, but it's not that big of a deal if you're just staring out.

@@theartworkshop Thanks, Mark. Very useful, you are the best! One more question: if I've almost completed a portrait, but then spoiled a large detail of the face and need to re-do the detail, is it theoretically possible to erase (or wash off) the detail and re-paint it without the "stitch" marks left? If so, what caveats would I watch for and in general, what advice would you have, if any? I've watched your video when you fixed the paint spill, it helped a lot, but I am talking about a large detail, say, a quarter of the face? Thank you very much in advance. Oh, and one more thing: you always mention that you are trying to keep your videos short, but for beginners like I am, every detail matters and I would find longer videos very useful. If I may, can I suggest to maybe have access to longer, 'unabridged' or even nearly raw versions of videos in your members area? Just a thought, FWIW.

I would carry on working trying to correct what you feel is off. It's a great way to learn. I think it's best to work a painting as far as you can go with it. Either way, you learned things while working on your painting.
