Finally got mine after so many weeks, it is my best board yet. I managed to get a combination of clack and marble using the PC plate, this board is the goat for me ngl.
I ended up getting this keyboard, and I'm pretty happy with it. These are my thoughts from the perspective of someone who's used mechanical keyboards for a very long time, but hasn't built many. My build: Midnight blue Cannon Coffee Chip Ice Cream tactile switches (modified - separate discussion in reply) Durock V2 PCB screw-in stabilizers PC Plate Poron gaskets No PCB foam No case foam Switch pad foam installed Masking tape mod Force break mod PBTFans "Spark" double-shot PBT keycaps I felt like there wasn't sufficient room in the case for the case foam with the tape mod installed. It was pretty pingy without it, but the force-break mod removed the ping. For the force-break I used small swatches of 2 layers of masking tape at several points around the perimeter where the two halves of the case meet. Both the tape and the force break made a huge difference in sound. At this point it sounded quite nice to my ear and I'm pretty happy. I also tried doing a t-shirt thing instead of the case foam to see if there would be additional improvement in the sound, but I don't think it did anything. I'm going to also try polyfill. I believe the included switch pad foam is poron, not PE. I might try actual PE foam, but I doubt it would make a significant difference. All the included foams are very nice and tidy. I assume the one corner is not cut out so that it's compatible with variations of the model that have a switch instead of a knob. The fit-and-finish is absolutely excellent, and it's heavy enough. The surface finish is divine, and there are no flaws inside or out, even on close inspection. The color is very nice. There is no visible branding, tacky decorations, designs, logos, or text. The sizes and proportions of the bezels is nice. I would prefer that the top wrapped around the bottom completely to hide the seam, but it's not a deal-breaker. It also means that the force-break mod creates a thin gap around the edge. It's hard to notice, unless you're looking directly from the side with the LEDs shining through. The label on the bottom is also kinda bleh, but who looks at the bottom, anyway? I wish the knob was knurled. The color of the knob isn't a perfect match to the color of the case, but it still looks good. It's very hard to match colors with the anodizing process, so it's not unexpected. Assembly was simple. Tucking in the USB wire is a bit fiddly. Aligning the PCB perfectly with the front of the case is also a bit annoying when using the poron gaskets. The silicone gaskets are keyed, which eliminates that issue. The PC plate is flexy, so when installing the switches I had to pull up on the plate with a switch puller to get it to snap in properly. This makes it hard to feel if the pins are lined up perfectly, but I never bent any. These are all very minor. It's worth being aware of, but would not impact my choice of which board to buy. Overall feel is very good, but the flex is only adequate. Using case foam would almost eliminate the flex that it does have. North-facing switches are a bummer. It's not an issue for me because I'm using long-stem switches, and don't care about LEDs anyway, but it does reduce choice of switches. For those who like LEDs, it's better for shine-through keycaps, but worse for back-lit. The AKKO cloud software is awful, and it's not QMK/VIA compatible. It lets you control the lights update the firmware, and do some basic remapping and macros. The remapping and macro functionality is very limited and the software is arcane, confusing and slow. Not all keys can be remapped, and it has these different weird modes where you have different capabilities of which keys can be remapped and how macros work. I haven't been able to figure it out and the documentation is bad. The knob can only partially be remapped. The only thing I actually needed was remapping caps-lock to control, which does work. After that, I can toss the software completely. Almost all of the light functionality (except selecting specific single colors) is available from keyboard shortcuts. The LED color selection in the software is also hard to use, and doesn't match the actual lighting very well. You can still get the result you want with some effort. There is a large selection of lighting patterns and effects, if you care about that. Overall, I'm very happy, particularly with the sound and physical quality. It has several problems, but they're problems that don't affect me. They might be deal breakers for people who need south-facing switches, need better software and macro compatibility, or need more flex. The included choices for foams, plates, etc. are great. There are more competitors if you can live with 2 or 3 navigation keys, and lots more if you are OK with a non-exploded layout. I think this is still good competition for those.
I got a variety pack of tactile switches to see what kind I prefer. I ended up liking those with a light spring, no pre-travel, a medium to strong tactility, and a round bump. I didn't like switches with sharp bumps, heavy springs, or those that feel like they started mid-bump. There were both long stem and normal stem switches I liked the feel of, but had a slight preference for the sound of long-stem. Upon disassembly, I found that every switch I liked had a two-stage spring of some kind or another. I went with Cannon Coffee Chip Ice Cream tactile switches with some modification. I obviously lubed them, and they do need filming IMO (not much wobble, but the housing isn't very tight, and the films improve sound slightly but noticeably). I went with the poron foam films as they sounded better. They have the same stem, etc. as the Neapolitan switches which everyone seems to like the feel of. The difference is the housing material (which mostly affects the sound), the spring (which mostly affects the feel), and the price (Coffee Chip is a lot cheaper). IMO, the sound of the Coffee Chip is better. If you swap the 63.5g, long, two-stage spring from the Neapolitan into the Coffee Chip, they have basically the same feel, but the Coffee Chip still sounds better. The 63.5g springs were out of stock, but I like light springs, so I got the 58g version. These worked awesome. It emphasizes the tactility more, and makes them have a wonderful "pop" feel. The relatively strong tactility means they are still not too light. The two-stage spring gives them a snappy return, even on the heavy keys. You could probably get away with even a 53g spring. As far as feel, I liked this version better than any other ~15 tactile switches I tried. QC was bad. Out of the 90 switches, two of the bottom housings had non-salvageable bent leaves. One of the top housings had a mangled clip. Four of the stems had a defective leg. All four were identically defective, and it appeared to be debris stuck in the mold. The switches with the bad stems still worked, but felt much less tactile. If you get these switches, look over the stems carefully because you might miss this problem. People have complained about flaking and flash on these switches, but I only had one that had any flash on the inside. It probably wasn't going to be a problem, but it was easy to remove regardless. Amazingly, even considering the bad switches I had to toss, and the cost of the springs, the Coffee Chip switches are still cheaper than Neapolitan, and those aren't horribly expensive in the first place. I can recommend them if you have the same general preferences as me. Another switch I liked and almost used were Azure Dragons. They are extremely smooth, but higher pitched and are not as tactile after being lubed. They come with factory lube and have very tight housings though, so you could probably get away with using them stock. From my preferences, I liked Neapolitans, Coffee Chips and Azure Dragons over Boba U4T, Glorious Pandas, Purple Pandas, and other similar long-stem switches.
I love this board... balanced the plate mount Stabilizer wires and put on some grease --> perfect, I have absolutely no reason to switch to screw in Stabs for now! Instead of case foam i used polyfill 😄 all in all perfect sounding creamy keyboard.
