Why doesn't my Stihl 4-Mix blower run like it should? Not as powerful & rpm not as high (BR600)

  • Hey everyone!
    This is a quick video going through my diagnoses of a Stihl BR600 4-Mix backpack blower that was only revving to 5500-5600rpm. This blower should rev to AT LEAST 7000rpm depending on the nozzle on the end of the output tube.
    I spent a lot of time scratching my head, searching the Internet, looking on forums to no avail. This issue, to my knowledge, has yet to be documented so I wanted to put this video out in the event someone else has the same problem.
    Watch as I explain my step by step mental checklist in diagnosing this issue... and check out the culprit which in this case, is a damaged cam timing gear.
    OEM Part # 4282 030 1801
    I'm happy to report the BR600 is back up and running like it should, getting that sweet sweet 7000RPM!
    Thanks for watching,
    -Dave

    There's no substitute for experience, as you learn from each rebuild that you do. Developing a consistent routine, then discovering new problems along the way to add to your knowledge will always be useful for repairs in the future. Well done.

    Dave, I love how well spoken you are, you have a really good head on your shoulders. I also love that you posted this, as this is a very unique issue that is not at all common. However, is becoming more common these days, due to using plastic inside engines. What is Stihl thinking? They are a commercial brand making a commercial piece of equipment, and they are clearly going the way of Briggs. And how well did that work for them? Apparently not well considering they declared bankruptsy. Excellent video Dave, I loved it!

    Great video Dave! I can't believe the cam is made out of plastic. Sounds like designed engineering for failure. Thanks again for sharing.

    Good video Dave! I have seen that exact same issue before and it took me forever to figure it out. Sad that Stihl would make one of the most critical parts in a engine out of plastic. Quality is definitely in decline! 👍🇺🇸🇨🇦 Roger

    Plastic has no place on a camshaft. Heard of this before but never seen it myself.

    Great video Dave, just wondering what you set the valve lash at on the BR 600's ? I watched a RUclips video tonight and a repair shop mechanic sets all of his at .008 in or 0.20 mm

    • @DavesSmallEngines
      @DavesSmallEngines  Год назад

      Stihl manual says 0.10mm +- 0.02mm for both intake and exhaust.

    Are those contact Surfaces on the Levers smooth ?
    Maybe you could polish them, for a longer plastic cam life.
    Wow, even here in Germany this part is out of stock.

    I've seen a Honda 4 stroke brushcutter that would not run , a check of the valves showed that they were barely opening at all . Going in deeper I found the cam completely worn down , almost no lobe left , made of plastic . Even some Briggs engines use plastic cams these days , it's not what I would call good engineering .

    This must be a common problem just got done rebuilding mine because it didn't rev out either and found the exact same issue my local dealer had it in stock 15 bucks. Can't complain too much this blower is 10 years old and needed the refresh anyway.

      Jeremy Saw your video and was going to mention to Dave. You had a new cover plate from Stihl that had an additional piece which was designed to get more of the lubrication on the cam... Appreciate both your informative videos. Thumbs up....

    Hi Dave my br600 hasn’t got a spark arester on the muffler would this cause my blower not to give full revs ?

    • @DavesSmallEngines
      @DavesSmallEngines  2 года назад

      No, in my experience it has nothing to do with the arrester - it’s not that restrictive.

    Ah another one of my blowers. I wore it out by hammering the throttle till empty many times showing off to people how you can make a tennis blow up right within the air flow making the people think the ball is magically floating by itself.

    Over the past years the engineers have conditioned up to accept poor quality. The marketers have taught us brand loyalty. It's a win win for the big companies.
