Wow, so this is a game that actually failed legitimately. Like, it wasn't mismanagement or some sort of scam, it just ran out of resources. That's more sad than usual for some reason.

Also, the Spearhead edition is imo another example of mismanagement. They sold you 3 games for $30 so even now if they ever finish the first full release they are in a big hole. This all happened before Kickstarter was a thing. Since then it has been a process of selling a trilogy to as many people as possible to fund a single episode but only ever producing a tech demo.

Don't release a game into early access if you aren't going to release it full in a healthy time, the audience will consume and move on, gamers are locusts, very few stick around for long. Very few games hold on to a large audience for longer than a few years.

Not to dispute your experience, but Interstellar Marines was never a "good" game. Even back at the time when they were on an upstream, it was barely any more than "somewhat decent". Primarily, it suffered from being generic in all of its mechanics and looks. One could have achieved the same gameplay experience with a much cheaper (at the time) and less versatile engine. They really just tried to recreate stuff that was already widely available in many forms.
To make a worthwhile product, they would have needed people with a much stronger vision and sense of artistic expression (visually and regarding gameplay).

This one is legitimately sad to hear about. The other games you've covered failed because of poor management or because they were never meant to succeed (scams). In the case of this one, however, it sounds like the devs really were passionate about making a great, unique game, but fate just didn't want it to happen.
Here's hoping that someday they're able to start working on this again and get the funding they need to make it a reality.

One that makes me so sad is The Dead Linger, I bought these two games back to back, I really did buy with my heart back then lol, my favourite game like it's too 10 is the PS3 version of alone in the dark (inferno) the mechanics alone make it cool to me.
I had no idea early access games although could have passionate teams, could just simply slowly lose momentum and thus run out of money.
I feel like if anyone is working on this game, they could do some sort of fundraiser or, "DLC pack" like a "back from the dead" pack, make it dirt cheap and make it include a weapon or something. Use it to finish this game off, like I'm working on a music album ATM, what I need to do is just stop adding things and finish it. I don't know, I know nothing of game development. Funny how you mentioned the landsharks being the main selling point, because that was the selling point for me and a friend of mine as well. I remember playing through the first mission with him and truly enjoying the experience, as it not only was spooky and atmospheric (which was a relatively new feel for games at the time), but the gameplay itself had a really solid foundation. The PVP was also really neat and the atmosphere from PVE definitely carried over, which (to me) is still extremely rare to see in modern games.
For a few years, that friend and I had an inside joke about the game, which was that we would suddenly remember the game, and then ask each other "are there landsharks, yet?"
I realized the game was truly dead (or so I thought) when the lead dev disclosed that he was the only one left on the team, and although development was still happening, he was taking care of his dying mother, and so he wasn't as available to work on the game as he would have liked.

Seeing anything about Interstellar marines breaks my heart.
I visited the devs at their office (in around 2014-2015 or something)
They are absolutely passionate and dedicated devs, who as Wiz states in the video, are concerned about making a great game, not making money. Money was always the issue though.
Me and another guy who visited them, were presented with the old Unreal build they had lying around but could not publish for anything due to the licensing issue, and they let us play it. In my deepest and most honest opinion, it was absolutely an "Alien Isolation" level of horror experience. The atmosphere was absolutely stellar, and listening to the land sharks (Yes, they were in that build) running around stalking you, was absolutely terrifying!
Imo, they should have gone all in on the "FPS Horror" aspect of the game, because that is where it was at its absolute best.
Horror and "MilSim/First Person Simulator/Realistic Shooters" however, are not the most popular genres out, and that might have been some of the reason for the difficulty with the funding.
And with the cumminty now shattered, and the negative reviews about abandonware etc. I think that they will have a hard time comming back ever.
I do sincerely hope they do.. There was some real talent behind the game, and some real passion and dedication.. sadly just not money..

Unity was just trying to open their wings at the time, but I grew up playing flash games, and knowing you can open up firefox or chrome etc. playing such a high quality game compared to the usual side scroller bike games, this was very surprising for me.

This video highlights how the importance of good sound design is severely over-looked in 99% of the gaming industry. People always think "We have 5 major senses, and we use two to perceive games.....WE NEED TO FOCUS ON FRAMERATES!!!"
Remember how those games you love from the past were able to fully immerse you, without 4K and 120fps? That's because sound is more important than visuals when trying to convey a 3d space in a 2d medium. As graphics improve, your eyes will still confirm to you that yes, you're looking at a 2d display simulating a 3d space.
But the ears....well the ears are more gullible, and if you hit them with just the right frequencies at the right equalizations, they'll convey a 3d space to your brain far better than your eyes.

Was lucky enough to play it in 2011 forward, (the TR system was implemented in 2013 as a part of their early access release update iirc, or the one just after that. It's been a while) and had a bunch of friends playing it as well. We all kinda trickled out due to newer games releasing and the lack of significant changes to the way IM played. We all still like it, but things like lack of teased enemies, even in the showroom area, were what drove us out. I appreciate their attempt at minor mechanic changes, and understand a lot of things changed with the move to Unity. I bought this game in 2014, it's wild to see someone covering the tragedy of this project. I never enjoyed the multiplayer like most of the community but I loved the suspense of the solo missions. I still have yet to find a game with this flavor of sheer panic when things go poorly in a matter of seconds and the AI attempt to hunt you down. I hope that this game comes back some day because I think it has a unique corner of the immersive simulator market if it focuses on the spooks and quick encounters amidst exploring the levels for objectives.

Don't really remember pvp being accepted all that fondly. I mean the whole original hook for it was pve coop and all that and instead of that we got yet another pvp... my personal interest dropped because of that.

Now that's an early access title sitting in my Steam library that I don't even feel angry rather just sad. I remember this game having such good mechanics for an early access game, great atmosphere and the few level the devs really know how to create the tension and replace it with adrenaline in the climax.
Now that me and the boys have moved on to titles like GTFO or Tarkov, it really feels like that's what this game could've become. The similarity and feelings are all there. Imagine this game could've had the players fighting rogue machine legion, infiltrating enemy base or straight up Starship trooper on some bug planet, it would've filled the holes of the market at that time. However, now It is against many other successful titles in the genre. It is too late now, although I am still hoping that one day... ...

Man just imagine what could have been if these devs got the kickstarter funds and stretched into Millions. Today im used to seeing scams with multimil raised, but this is actual game that would boom if development wasnt constricted by budget.

This was one of the first and last games I bought on early access and it still plays better than many "AAA" games out there.
It's atmospheric, the gameplay and gunplay are amazing even for it's time and it still holds up today.
Too bad it never went forward.

I worked on this game for many years as the only animator, and I animated everything from marines to land sharks to robots. It was an absolute blast to work on this game, and the game director Kim, is without a doubt the most passionate and real person I have ever known, and his ideas and vision for this game, is beyond anything we have seen to this date still..
But it was like the universe did everything to stop the game from being developed, it was so hard back then to get attention and publishing deals. And we had to switch engine in the middle of it all, from Unreal to Unity, which was a huge set back. But we SHOULD have stayed with Unreal because it went free shortly after we switched, like I said, everything was against us apparently.
We created a pretty damn cool Demo/vertical slice in Unreal (which you didn't mention, although this was a really good video from you, and very well researched 🙂). The demo had the land sharks, and they where roaming the space station randomly like the robots, and created some really intense scary moments, all dynamic.. The level had Huge water tanks with sharks swimming around too.. I mean, that was a really cool demo. But because of Epic and Unreal at that time, we couldn't show or promote the demo anywhere, unless we payed Epic a big amount of money, that we didn't have, because all the money went straight to the production... I mean, it's easy to blame the universe and everything else for our struggles.. but it honestly felt like it.
Anyways. Thank you for making this video, and being very professional about it. It's very easy to bash games for their flaws, but you didn't.. Again.. Thanks for the video ❤

Never heard of this game, But I applaud you for your work and love for crafting games and their animations. Please keep working on things and stay in the industry, there are many dev groups that need good animators. Also mod groups as well, I hope life has been treating you well and thanks for the inside information!
