A one bedroom apartment is converted into a two bedroom apartment, using a temporary "Floating Room Divider" designed and constructed by Andy Thompson (www.andythompson.ca). Construction assisted by Kryshan Randel (www.kryshanrandel.com).
Construction Details
In order to adhere to residential tenancy laws (and reassure the management) this structure is "temporary". It is not screwed, nailed or bolted into the existing structure. Instead, it was "wedged in" using vertical pressure from strategic lengths of lumber. Foam and plastic were attached to the 2x4s that touched the walls, ceiling and floor.
There were some special factors that made turning this one-bedroom apartment into a two-bedroom apartment possible: (1) the carpeted floors with underlay allowed the 2x4s to be secured by "wedging" them in vertically, and (2) it's an 800 sq. foot apartment with a solarium (seen on the left of the screen), as well as a huge living / dining room that could afford to be a bit smaller to allow for the new additional bedroom to be built from the solarium area.
The wall is wired internally with HDMI ports and cabling for a video projector, as well as a "temporary" power outlet (courtesy of Adam Weidl of Weidl's Wiring).

FAQ
(1) What's the layout of the apartment?
Answer: Good question! We had a schematic but the link is now dead! We will see if we can locate that and if we can we will add the link here. Keep checking back.
(2) How much did it cost?
Answer: Around $1,200 (Cdn), which included HDMI wiring within the wall and electrical (considered "temporary" by our electrician friend; basically the wall itself plugged in!)
(3) How long did it take?
Answer: About a week (part-time).
(4) Why didn't you show us the entire room?
Answer: Um... we realize that would have been useful. We were just making a fun movie as we did a home reno. Hindsight! Sorry about that! - Хобби
Oh thank god for this. I wasn't sure how to make the dining room I never use into a bedroom without ripping shit up. I had no idea floating room dividers existed. It might cost me a bit, but it'll save me a lot of money when I get a new roommate.
in NYC, that small room is a full blown studio going for $1800 a month
Same in central london haha
Exactly that’s y I’m watching this cause who paying 2,000 a month at least for a 2 bedroom apt no a living room turned into a extra bedroom room will due
Loved your video. I suspended a floor to ceiling tension system in an apartment kitchen to triple my storage and counter space. It was a small galley kitchen that when after completion I could reach anything from a seated position in the middle of the room. Best most efficient kitchen I've ever had.
I loved the happy dance at the end. That was great!
this is pretty nice! the thing that made me not like this video much is that you didnt really teach us "how to" like the title says. i wish i knew what you used and how you used it since I am not a builder, i needed the instruction. you did show us how YOU 2 did it but no explaining:( to show us "how to" build it. you guys looked like you had fun though. enjoy your space!
+Jules Aviles Hi Jules. Some pre-existing technical skill would be required to pull this off. By looking at the video and reading the descriptions if a person didn't say "I get it" then it would not be recommended. New page created here: www.andythompson.ca/how-to-turn-a-1-bedroom-into-a-2-bedroom/
yah right....my landlord would just LQVE ME TO DO THAT to my apartment.
DOB will make you take it out.
I know right? the best option is a portable divider
+Matt Jocobs It's not screwed to anything, it's just wedged. It is temporary and removable. Read the very end of the video.
Well, that makes a big difference....then my comment is "how clever!!!"
This was my initial thought!...but read credits.
You could do it on a hardwood floor, but I'd recommend "simulating" the benefit that the carpet and underlay provided, that is: the "give" or "play" that the "sponginess" provided when wedging the vertical 2x4s in. What you could do it get some high density bed foam and custom cut it and put it under the 2x4 at the bottom and above the 2x4 at the top. This would also help with soundproofing, as well as make up for any imperfections in the surfaces that you're wedging the wall into.
- Andy
The expenses were somewhere around $1,500 - $2,000 including the best quality soundproofing insulation, the door and frame, embedded wiring (AC and HDMI) and a small honorarium for an electrician friend to wire the wall into an existing outlet, so the wall could be "plugged in".
2:29 Yay, now if my roommate won't open the door, I can climb out the window. wait.. what floor are we on?
2 bedrooms?
I see a smaller 1 bedroom with a sweet walk in closet.
JgHaverty this is two bedroom in NYC unfortunately...
Kazuko Kobayashi Lol, I can imagine it would be a city. Creative for sure, Thats just a tiny ass room though.
+JgHaverty you hit it right on the spot. I have a 1 bedroom apartment 20 mins outside of Manhattan and its HUGE compared to this. instead of spending all that money on rent for a closet....he should actually look around a bit....there's alot of hidden treasure in The Bronx and i hit a goldmine. 2 minute walk to yankee stadium and the D train.

I would love to see a video of your floor to ceiling tension system to triple your storage and counter space! Sounds like a solution to problems many of us face.
Best silent movie I've scene in a long time. 🌹
I love the happy dance and kicking of legs outta joy. put a smile on my face.
i wanted to see a layout to get a feel of it
Looks like a nice, tidy piece of work from here. Good stuff.
Love this video ! Enjoyed watching it !
Well, you're very easy to please.
good work all in under 5 minutes too. Lol the victory Dance made it worth watching.
Just build a wall and install a door? Golly gee, why didn't I think of that!????!!?!?!?!?!?
Well we were focused on doing the best possible job. Not a rushed job. But great to hear you have such amazing skill! Impressive!
You guys are so awesome!
To show it inside whis a little deco sure was more nice. Thanks from Canary islands _Spain. Merry Christmas.
Technically this wall is a "floating room divider". But the management did freak out when they saw all the 2x4s and insulation coming in. They initially said we couldn't do it, after seeing all the stuff. But after discussions with senior management of the property, they realized there was nothing they could do: it's a temporary structure. Just a sophisticated and "permanent-looking" one.
that was an Ingenious workaround. never thought of wedging using foam on the ends of the 2x4's. thank you for the idea. maybe next time add a blurb before the video starts so that people don't get turned off thinking you are using nails into the apartment wall. i bet a lot of people didn't watch the whole video or read the technical paragraph at the end since people don't like to read
Amazing. Me and my brother are moving into a one bedroom apt soon and i love this idea.. He ofcourse is scared but i am looking forward to maybe having a lil project to stay busy and learn a new skill at the same time. I have a few questions so i will be looking forward to reaching out to you guys for your experience... ;-) Congrats on the vid ....
loved the video!
Thanks!
well done!
could instead install glass with aluminium frame to make it looks more open and spacey or turned into a bookshelf wall. you'll have extra storage space.
More like "how to get evicted"
some people own apartments, they are not just for rent
Tadashi Yoshida - 作家 if they did not own it they wouldn't make it permanent which is why at the end it says "FLOATING" 02:35 and it says it's temporary after that at 02:41..
Great video
I am in need of doing the same in my house but I was wondering does sound travel easily into the new bedroom.
Hey i love this idea, i am in a very similar dilemma, my mom wants to buy a room divider but that's not exactly private but if i was to present this to her she'd ask me what if some one leaned against the wall? and she would want specific details, any extra details would be much appreciated, thank you very much!
Thanks!
unless you are the owner of the apartment, you can do that if not a heavy drapery will do as a divider.
Imagine your landlord coming in to see a new wall up loooooool
can u show a step by step guide ?????please and thank you
Excellent
perfect job
The 2x4s themselves were screwed together, but nothing was actually screwed or nailed into the building. It was 100% pressure-fitted.
nice and price is reasonable!
Best music on RUclips, thanks for the Beethovan.
Thanks for the video....What sort of foam and plastic did you add to buffer the studs to the ceiling walls and floor?
We used a high-density foam that comes in rolls. It's translucent... um... Sorry, I'm not a professional carpenter! I think it was polyethylene foam. It comes in the width of a 2x4 (3.5" wide).
Love it!!
Thanks!
I love the ending!!! Lol
nice work
G.E.N.I.U.S thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks!
This is what exactly I am looking for, but I didn't get anything from your video, your speed is too far, could you please do another video for the same point? I have one apartment and I would like to divide it to two apartment, but there is no place for two entrance doors, how could I solve this problem? Could you please help me for that? Thank you..
how many days for the job to get done please ? great job
Wild!
I didn't know that something could be JUST pressure fitted, without any other support....
Hmmm...was that a stop-motion, or a sped-up video?
Fantastic!
Jne
Very cool.
Why didn't you show the use of the room or the decoration of it..was it meant to be a reading room or a sitting room?
We should have done that. no question. Though we have now moved out of the suite, I can tell you that it was a pretty awesome bedroom in there.
Andy Thompson Hey Andy, is this legal in NYC? Never knew you could alter apartment spaces!
Saif S Brooklyn Attitude: I pay the rent in MY apartment, I do what I WANT in my apartment.
That's awesome.
Love the music
If we were high it would have been a gong show. This was the creation of two very sober minds. :)
3 days to do a drywall?, i think it takes some hours...
door has too be bolted because it would be too loose, what u guys used for casing around door , i was thinking of doing something like that but with paneling instead of drywall, nice project respect
Great!!
Do u guys had to nail the 2x4 to the floor?
love the background music! Beethoven :)
We're both single.
Looks easy is probably not
nice one thank you....could you please let me know why you fill inside the partition ?... Thanx
Thanks! The insulation was only for soundproofing.
thank you very much for your fast feed back..im working on doing my own partitioning. your video really helpful. thanx again.
Wow, you guys sure move fast!
Yeah I know!
Please come build one in my apt! LOL.
How big is that "bedroom" ? It doesn't look any bigger than 6X8. I guess that's legal? do you still have this up?
the secret is all in the music.
team awesome i was just wondering how much would a job like this cost to do?
$1,100 - 1,200 (Cdn) for materials approx.
How to they even have storage space in that tiny room?
You all should have let us see the room.
Yes, good point. We no longer are roommates and no longer live in that space. Hindsight is 20/20!
how was the door mounted with screwing/nailing to the preexisting structure?
The new "temporary" walls were pressure-fitted first. They were solid as a rock. Then the door was simply added to the one wall. Done!
Oh I stand corrected by Kryshan. It's been so long, now! He reminds me the costs were around $1,100 to $1,200. My bad. -Andy
Awesome Sauce $1200 american dollars? Material only??
How? A few strips of timber, 3 plasterboards, some plaster finish and some paint??
awww I wanted to see the other room too.
cherista ?
very clever, you guys are doing this in Canada? I do this in California.
im still waiting to see the bedroom.
awesomeness
Is this legally allowed? I thought most places don’t allow changing the floor plan.
It's technically "temporary" and floating; it's not attached by any nail or other type of fastener.
How bout when you move out. Is it going to be easy to disassemble?
It was a total mess. We actually filmed that, as well, but we haven't posted it. Maybe we will one day.
How much would a project like this cost ?
How are the vertical studs held up? How do you nail them into the top and bottom plates?
Pressure-fitted by being smart about what the length should be, then hammering them in wedge-style. No screws or nails or anything like that into the walls.
Do you have more pictures of what you're talking about? I'm trying to create a bedroom for my kids in an apartment....upsizing is out of budget for a while right now
how much would these cost to be done by a contractor, ballpark?
love the moonlight sonata =DD
Whats the white thing put in wood looks like a paint
How do I build a 3 story home?
Why are there nails in the very first 2x4 you put up then? I really want to do this, but I'm pretty sure I can't because of putting nails in the wall
Two days and two people to throw up a non fixed stud wall with a door, were you doing it all with manual screwdrivers and a butter knife? Or just stop to watch a few seasons of a tv show too?
What if my floor was carpeted? Appreciate the advice! :)
You could put it right over the carpet. Put something spongy between the bottom plate and the carpet. If the wall is ever removed, the carpet will have a wall indentation, just like when anything else heavy sits on carpet for a while.
genios!
2:30 LOOOL😂😂😂
Sure. Feel free to post your questions here so others can see the answers, in case they have similar questions. The main thing was to make it a technically "temporary" structure, so don't screw or bolt anything into the existing structure. It's a hi-end room divider, and can be removed when you vacate (speaking in terms of tenancy in BC, Canada... not sure what the laws are in other regions, but likely similar...)
- Andy
Ive looked it up online and this is still illegal
You do this in California? Like, for a living? Or a hobby? Do tell!!! :)
- Andy
I don't know where this apartment is, but most landlords do not allow tenants to alter an apartment this way.
that's not made it 2 bedroom. just an entryway or like changing room. no privacy for the bigger room when other trespassing through...
Correct 👍.. Purpose of a bedroom is privacy.. That was truly a waste of time and money..
how long did it take?
Two minutes and fifty four seconds .Quickest builders on the planet.
Just get me two people to help do this...and we are totally good
All that, just put up a dam curtain. 🤣 Those walls thick enough to block out all sound anyway. 🤣
why insulate a inner wall?
yeah it looks like a closet and had another door on the other side, this appears like a permanent wall.
how much was everthing in total ?
reply
The one important part you are not showing is the top of the wall. For a DIY newbie like me, I do not know how that upper part looks like, how it touches the ceiling ..etc.
There is a 2x4 board that you screw into the ceiling. It's called a top plate (the one fastened to the floor is called a bottom plate & studs run between the top & bottom plate).
Just make your living room a bedroom and stop having so many low key enemies at your crib. Start having cook outs and go outside to meet up with fam and friends, cause you don't need their toxins and germs in your crib any way. The house is for sleeping not having parties at. You want to have a party, go to a park. ,🤣
THIS‼️‼️‼️💯💯💯
Why not use two sets of curtains instead? It'll be a real floating partition.
You don’t need to put insulation on a wall that’s inside the house it only goes on the outside of the house or on the wall that is basically outside if you tear down interior walls don’t use it
We added the insulation as a sound barrier.
Lol I'm thinking like curtains not this you'd literally get evicted if maintenance reports you
It would be helpful if you showed the actual rooms. I don't see how this is two bedrooms.
Hi! There is a schematic here: www.andythompson.ca/how-to-turn-a-1-bedroom-into-a-2-bedroom/
