You’re on the right track. I started painting in march and these are by far and away the best videos on RUclips - I’ve come along way thanks to Chris.
Also check out Chamberlain Painting he’s great too

My young nephew wants to start painting.
I sent him to you just like everyone else who asks how.
Your method focusing on fundamentals is far more effective than materials where one technique or style are taught.
Most people teach people how to paint like the teacher .
You teach people how to find their own style.
If there is a better teacher on the you tubes I am unaware of them.

First time commentor, long time fan. Got a question, but first: I watch all your videos and learned so much from them. Thank you for all you share. FYI- really like your cliff notes style of showing your stages. ❤❤❤ you so painterly rock!!!😊
Question: about 3 years ago, a video you posted with a focus on the usefulness of constructive feedback and how being open to feedback sets an artist up to grow their skills so much more and faster. You likened it to Gladwells 10,000 hours when he updated it to state far less when a person isn’t just doing “it” for sake of doing it but in our case painting with specific goals in mind, with constructive feedback as our guide. Hopefully I rambled enough to jog your brain or some other longtime fan who can pin point that video. Wanted to share with my women’s art group. Thanks in advance!!

Thanks Chris, Great video and recap on the steps to take when painting. Could you explain why you start the 1st lemon with cad yellow, red, black and burnt sienna as oppose to yellow ochre which is already desaturated? Thanks

2:38 - to desaturate. Would it be bad or easier to use a natural Grey to knock it down rather than the opposite color on the wheel?

@4:06 you said "light to dark" but I think you meant "dark to light." Just a heads up. Sorry if I'm wrong about that.

if I want the subject in question to have a more polished/smoother look (not the painterly brushstroke style), is it okay to use a very smooth bristle blender brush in this case to almost "Erase" the brushstrokes and make the lemon look smooth/round?

    Hey Chris
You do a lot of portraits and are good at it... Sometime in 2025 please consider doing a portrait of a Walrus and one of Character Actor Jack Elam. Would be fun projects I suspect and Jack was a actor not very famous like your other actor portraits.
I am going to try to adhere to these principals more than I currently do. I know they are great and will work but I get sidetracked easily sometime.
Instead of oranges (I like this painting) think I will try Okra, a leaf and a bloom. Challenging greens!
Thank you for your videos and Best Regards from Texas
