HOT TIP !!! If you are keen to go to Greenland, Greenlandair have recently introduced DKr.1995 flights to Nuuk, Sisismuit and Ilulisat from Copenhagen, and you get to spend 22 hours in Kangersauq between flights.....those who know what the price usually is will know this is about half the regular cost....very few flights available, but you can now fly to Ilulisat, spend two nights on the boat heading for Nuuk and fly back from there for £ 600 which is massively cheap compared to the usual prices. The £ 600 includes the boat, and all four flights, with Copenhagen to London add-on with Ryanair from £ 10 each way.
I stayed a couple of nights in a "budget" $600/night cabin across from Eqi glacier. No electricity, no plumbing and no heat! I had to sleep under sealskin blankets and a T-shirt wrapped around my head to stay warm. Although that was a bit uncomfortable at times, there is nothing like waking up in the middle of the night and watching the calving Eqi glacier lit up in golden and purple hues under the midnight sun from my bed. One of the most spectacular places I have ever visited. And one other thing to mention is that you can do a day hike to the ice sheet from Eqi. It was a much different ice sheet experience compared to the ice sheet entry point in Kangerlussuaq. I hope to be back again some day.
I recommend Icefjord Apartments by Hotel Icefjord. They're a little ratty and ghetto but the budget is just right $100 per night plus kitchenette. It's smack in the middle of town near World of Greenland office. Pro tip! It's where I normally stay unless Air Greenland screws up and I get stuck in Ilulissat and I've stayed at all the places in town in the higher price range. I like being able to take 200 m to Pissifik or even closer to Spar / Super1 for my meals. etc. Great for couples or solo travelers.
Thanks Alex for introducing us to Greenland. I was going to ask when to come to avoid mosquitoes… you answered in the video. I am considering a long "workation" stay, e.g. working with the laptop and going out for hikes/visits every now and then - did it already in Iceland and the Faroe, 3 monthes each, it was great!
Tusind tak! Mon ikke du får en mulighed en gang snart? Nogle gange er man heldig at få billige billetter. Købte selv en tur/retur fra Nuuk-Kbh for 3.700kr igår😱 Hvilket er vildt billigt😄
Funny thing is, I could have been a chef at Hotel Arctic right now. I applied for a culinary (cooking) internship up there, but by the time they responded officially, 'Rona had taken effect, and I could not come up there. Kinda depressing, but it is what it is.
Have you been to East Greenland? We went to Kulusuk on a day trip from Reykjavik, and it would be an interesting vlog for you to do, and maybe also include Tasiilaq in it? Up to you, of course, just a suggestion. Your videos are always interesting.
Hey Alex, binge watched all your vlogs and we are so in love with Greenland and surrounding areas. Nuuk is a great place and the snow is definitely a plus taking into consideration our climate in South Africa. Please post more recent vlogs (2022), thirsty for more information especially on nearby malls. Keep up the good work 🇿🇦.
Im getting some comments from south Africa now, seems like the RUclips algorithm is sending my videos that way😅 But sure, I am slowly getting started again this year and should have something coming😊
@@AlexAmasaOlsen welcome to SA ☺️. Nuuk is a hidden gem and we are so glad to have found you. Would really consider immigrating there if it was possible 😔. Honestly, who wouldn't want to live there???

Could you do a daily vlog if possible? It would be super interesting to see your day to day routine in Greenland. I'm watching all of your content right now, never thought that I'd have an interest in Greenland.

@@AlexAmasaOlsen Oh wow. From all the videos I've watched, I would love to live in Nuuk. I can't afford to move there now but maybe someday. Thank you for responding!
I don't think I'll make it there in my life time as I'm wheelchair ridden. I thank you for filming as it makes me feel like I am there. In general is Greenland wheelchair friendly including Ilulissat?
Greenland is not really wheelchair friendly, as there are many steep hills, stairs and making surroundings wheelchair friendly is simply very costly. Also the focus on accessibility has only been in focus for the last couple of years.
I didnt look for it and most higher end restaurants try to use the local food, so halibut, musk ox and snow crab etc. We dont grow that many vegetables😄
Alex just discovered the channel. I actually planned out a whole vacation to Ilulissat during the pandemic! Now finding out about the airports I decided to push the vacations back a bit. Was Hotel Artic worth it or do you think I would get a better experience with the Best Western? (or other lodging) $ is not an issue.
Yes, so far it is looking promising with the airport in Ilulissat! I mean dining is good in Hotel Arctic and also the view. But Best western is located in the middle of Ilulissat and has a top terrasse.. Rooms will also be newer in Best Western. But if in doubt try both😅 I have only eaten in Hotel Arctic and not slept any of the places, its a money issue dor me😉
I would love this place but I am a bit afraid of dogs. I had bad experiences with wild dogs in other countries. Are the dogs here well behaved? Do they leave you alone?
@@AlexAmasaOlsen Looks like they are extending the runway at Nuuk. Will that open up to flights from other places perhaps? Or just larger planes from Denmark or Iceland?

You mean a different town, or different accomodations? For accomodations, there are quite a few hostels and air bnb, try to search for that. For other town, Ilulissat is just unique, laying right next to a calving glacier and the extra price for being there is worth it in my opinion.
