Interesting take on the underdevelopment! Im also definitely wondering what you think about the isolation? Depression from darkness, loneliness or cold? Thanks 🤓
In regards to isolation, you are kinda isolated when you live here.. Each town is usually only connected by boat or plane and you can feel alone. But you can always take a plane to Denmark or Iceland, to escape Greenland once in a while, thats what I do. So, isolation is in my opinion not that bad, we have internet, entertainment and if you have a good job you should have plenty of things to get done. Winter depression is a real thing and I know I personally am affected by the dark. Which is why I make sure to have proper lighting, get out when possible, exercise and long term I will buy a light therapy lamp. The cold is solved with good clothing, higher energy bills during winter and generally being cautious about your stays outside.
@@AlexAmasaOlsen I wonder how the Kangerlussuaq-Sisimiut road might change that? Guessing it'll be more so feeling less isolated from tourism than for the commercial aspect and, eh, 500 people in Kangerlussuaq, but then again I'm writing this from the United States so I have no idea :p

I have a strong fascination about Greenland since my childhood. If I have the money, I would love to implement some kind of farming/gardening business there. I know the lack of fresh veggies on the country and the large amount of money waste with importation is a real issue for the country. Southern Greenland is just a little bit colder than Northern Norway or Patagonia (Southern Chile and Argentina, one of the main fruit producer in the planet), so thinking about of summer outside farming and winter greenhouse gardening is not that crazy (maybe) But, now, it's only a dream. Very interesting channel. I'm a new subscriber from Southern Brazil.
I like your idea and have myself thought of the problem of importing all those vegetables.. I think a hydroponic system would be the way to go, since you would be able to supply veggies year round. We actually already have one "greenhouse" called Greenlandic Greenhouse, where they use hydroponics to grow lettuce etc.
@@AlexAmasaOlsen yep, I know about Greenlandic Greenhouse and certainly is a great improvement for the country, if you think how the situation was just a couple years ago. But I still think Southern Greenland has a lot of potential to do much more. I hope more people of Greenland think about this for a near future. If it's true we cannot stop global warming, it's time to begin the process of transition from a tundra place for a, maybe, future temperate and productive region. You can use greenlandic, danish, and english. For greenlandic dialects, its the western greenlandic here in Nuuk, intertwined with quite a lot of danish words😅
Greenlandic (the West dialect) is the only official language here, so please learn it if you decide to move here. Usually people in Nuuk also speak Danish or English so if you don't speak Greenlandic, then you can get around with one of those two just fine

In my country we have a similar phenomenon in Alaska where it is also cold and remote and many jobs pay very well, but it is it similar in Greenland where you are paid well but the cost of living turns it into a less spectacular income as a consequence of having many vital goods shipped in from afar? I am curious
The pay is on average not as good as in ex. Denmark, but certain circumstances, such as short distances, make owning a car less necessary and thereby make it cheaper. But buying goods etc is on average 30% more expensive than Denmark, so your phenomenom is also true here😊
@@ScubaSteveM45 Real estate in Nuuk is getting more and more expensive and newer homes are closing in on suburban Copenhagen prices, which is insane... But I am happy with my deal, I bought in 2019 and my house has probably increased $50-60.000USD

2 questions: (1) when is high speed internet coming to Greenland?, and (2) how much is electricity per KwH? the reason I ask......is Greenland a 'friendly environment' for Bitcoin (and Ethereum) mining?
1) Depends what you mean by high speed? We have available 100/100mbps for businesses and i think you might be able to get more if you request directly from Tele Post for a custom plan. 2) 1kwh=1,65DKK So depending on your needs it might be and you might be able to make deals directly with the electricity provider, since a mining operation would require such large amounts of power.
@@AlexAmasaOlsen 1.65 DKK = 22 cents in Euros. I live in Dublin (expensive city) and I pay 17 cents per KwH for domestic consumption. A serious discount is required to make the business model work in Greenland. May I ask......does Greenland have a government agency that promotes and facilitates inward investment? Do/can they communicate in English?

one day i need to visit Greenland I've always liked the arctic
I wanna go to Greenland too!!,by the way,did you know where can i study a master degree in biology in Nuuk?,Grettings from Mexico!.
I'd like to visit Greenland when I sail to Europe next year however you dont allow pets and I cant find any info on if I can stop while my pets stay on board our sailboat
Yes, above the arctic circle other dogs than greenlandic sleddogs are not allowed.
Maybe talk to the police in Greenland and ask what you can do.😊
Greenland if you really love snow!!
Hahah, that too!
Hello Sir Great video
😁
Have you shopped at Fissizzik store? If so are they expensive?
I assume you mean Pisiffik?😅
I shop there sometimes, but mostly shop at Brugseni, which is the other major chain of supermarkets in Greenland. Pisiffik is usually a little more expensive than Brugseni, but oftentimes has more options and exclusive products. Dom P champagnes etc..
Is Greenland a place that retired people can survive, transportation, medical, inexpensive homes or apartments? Good information on your video here.
I would not choose Greenland to be retired, as it is difficult to get around and you have to be ablebodied. Pricewise not so well again, as Im sure other places would be more fitted for retired people
@@AlexAmasaOlsen Thank you for your honesty. I am 74 living in California, but the cost of everything is not for people on Social Security. I'll keep looking.
Interested to know where you were born? I am from New Zealand at the bottom of the world and we also have 40 hour working weeks and free health care. Sport and the outdoors, tramping , beaches is our passion in our time off.
Love this Channel
Thank you😁
Can I get a scholarship to live in greenland as a student?
Hi. Do u think a person with asthma can survive the coldness there? 🥶🥶🥶 What do u suggest? Been offered with a job there btw.
Probably, as a family member of mine has allergies and asthma and due to very low pollen and pollution in the air, it works out alright.
Also very low humidity in the air here
What languages could you use to get around in nuuk? As i know greenland has many dialects.
Great info, Thank you!... I subscribed 👍🏻
How would you rate the Education System in Nuuk?
Thanks Mike😁
Schooling is alright I guess, with an option to put your kid in a private school as well. It all depends on which teachers you get. I came through school and high school with pretty goid teachers and now have a university degree
Get better at speaking danish, only then you can get far in Education System
hello... Alex how are you ? what are you doing in greenland.
Hi!
I am living and working in Greenland. Working in a telecommunication company, where I take care of the buildings and for managing construction of new one.
Greenland will be the next tropical paradise in 20 years . I want to invest in the hotel and hospitality industries as soon as I can . Can you help me ?
40 hours is not a "fairly short" workweek bro :)
But buying goods etc is on average 30% more expensive than Denmark, so your phenomenom is also true here😊
@@AlexAmasaOlsen how was the real estate prices vs. Denmark? Would you say you got a better deal vs. a Danish house or about the same
@@ScubaSteveM45 Real estate in Nuuk is getting more and more expensive and newer homes are closing in on suburban Copenhagen prices, which is insane...
But I am happy with my deal, I bought in 2019 and my house has probably increased $50-60.000USD
@@AlexAmasaOlsen small world I bought my house here in the USA in 2018 and it has gone up by an identical value. I will never sell it since while home values have gone up somewhat home prices have gone up exponentially in my country
@@ScubaSteveM45 Nice, yes it is nice to see all that equity stacking up😎
So how do you make a living in Greenland? I saw the other video about your house and it looks pretty nice but I can't really see what are some of the major jobs out in Greenland besides fishing and maybe mining outside of tourism.
In Nuuk we have all the administration jobs, for a country to function.
I work as a coordinator for our national telecom, renovating buildings and construction of new ones.
Healthcare is also big
@@AlexAmasaOlsen would you say the private sector is viable or is gov't service the only realistic sector to work for in Greenland
@@ScubaSteveM45 The majority of available jobs here are government jobs, but private jobs are available.
I used to work at WSP before, which is a private company.
@@AlexAmasaOlsen what's the outlook on Greenlandic manufacturing? I happen to be a machinist by trade so I'd probably stay in that type of work wherever on Earth I went
@@ScubaSteveM45 The main export here is shrimp/fish. On top of my head not a lot of manufacturing, besides construction
That townhouse is pretty big and decent, and the price is not orbital.
2) 1kwh=1,65DKK
So depending on your needs it might be and you might be able to make deals directly with the electricity provider, since a mining operation would require such large amounts of power.
I see.
Maybe try Invest in Nuuk: investinnuuk.gl/
Shoot them an email, as I think they handle foreign investments etc.
but like... how is the internet connection?
i'm greenlandic and it's pretty good i guess
im living in sisimiut :)
Nice!
My hometown😊
This im going back to Nuuk/Assiat
Great description about living in Greenland. I think that it should be truly fantastic to live there, but I am also aware that we must face the problem of global warming in order to preserve these lands and their natural environments. Thank you for this nice video
Yes, lets preserve the ice we have up here please😊
According to you🤔,which provience of Greenland have much job opportunities and cheap ??
I would say for an english speaker and most job opportunities, definitely the capital Nuuk. But not as cheap as any other place in Greenæand though...😅
Have you ever find any brasilian there?
Yes, my girlfriend knows one here in Nuuk.
@@AlexAmasaOlsen Nice, you got another subscribe
@@AlexAmasaOlsen there's a Brazilian guy, a cheff de cuisine, that lived for some time in a small village in Greenland, as well for a few months in Nuuk. Now I think he lives in Iceland. He has an RUclips channel focused on travel and gastronomy
@@Ignatius1972 You know his name or youtube channel? Now im getting curious!
I spent a lot of time in Scandinavia, lived in Sweden for a year, and Germany for 4 yrs. I think I could handle Greenland. I'd be coming from California. Tak.
Greenland is very different from those places
Do people have dogs there? And what are the laws on owning dogs?
can you please help me get there
Do you speak Greenlandic?
I was wondering that too. Maybe he does idk
Am an ACCA qualified..can i find job over there... ( chartered Accountant)
Should be possible, I know we have EY here, as well as Deloitte and others
@@AlexAmasaOlsen thank you🙂
Guy, I'll tell you right now I'm all for the idea of living in Greenland and I like some of what you say but I don't give either the climate-change thing or the distancing issue and the corona panic time of day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the idea to live in a calm environment, but the weak infrastructure of such a remote place scares me. I prefer living at the calm edge of a big city, so I will have nature outside the city and a good infrastructure.
Yes, we live very isolated and it can have its challenges. Hopefully the new international airports will do some good for Nuuk and Ilulissat😀
@@AlexAmasaOlsen How long does it take to get something you ordered on amazon?
@@BlackStarASMR Hmm, I would say roughly two weeks. Since Amazon Prime is not available
@@AlexAmasaOlsen I guess Greenland might be something for vacation only for me. Are the hotels expensive there? I don't have much money, indeed I struggle very much, I have debt of 76000 EUR and I have to pay high interest rates, I struggled with paying my rent this month for the first time in 10 years. Wish I would pay only lower interest rates of 2 % p. a. or so. Right now I pay 7 to 11 % p. a.. But maybe Greenland vacation somewhere in the future.
@@BlackStarASMR I hope you get rid of that high interest debt soon my friend! Because vacationing in Greenland is definitely not cheap.. A hotelroom in Ilulissat is roughly $200 pr. night and in Nuuk you could get a budget option for $140 pr night. Airbnb rooms are a cheaper alternative.
Can software engineers live here
great vid

@@AlexAmasaOlsen hoping to watch more videos, especially related to nature over there at your place
I will get more out during this spring/summer😎
Do you think one of reasons why u can enjoy living in Greenland is because you’ve have the opportunity to travel and live elsewhere ?
Hi Alex, I'm hoping to plan a trip and visit Greenland next year, and am so glad I came across your videos. They're super helpful and informative, thank you! Question for you: I'm from Chicago, and am wondering how long I can stay without needing some sort of work visa? I work remotely, so I can potentially stay for a couple of months.
Glad you found the videos helpful😁
As a rule of thumb you can be a tourist for 3months, I have made another video explaining citizenship in Greenland, and have provided some useful links for visas etc in the description, so go check the links out.
I am going to open a business in Greenland. I will be selling ice.
Hi Alex, if we working, can bring our parents to stay with us, how about the visa process?
You can check a video I made about becoming a citizen in Greenland. There are some links to the immigration website, which is pretty good.😊
Tried to buy it in the forties too. Not unheard of. 100 million was the offer back then. free healthcare isn't free...
Nope, healthcare is never free.. Taxes or insurances, depends what you like best.
