As one more familiar with zen and mainstream Mahayana sutras & associated literature, I cannot help but notice how this Tibetan teaching resonates with soto zen, and also with rinzai zen, as "searching for the observer" is much like searching for "your original face". "Exhausting your view" is a prerequisite to awakening. The way some Sanskrit terms are used here is unfamiliar, but the very difference is the very sameness.
Is that related to The Upanisa Sutta in the Samyutta Nikaya: suffering (dukkha) faith (saddhā) joy (pāmojja, pāmujja) rapture (pīti) tranquillity (passaddhi) happiness (sukha) concentration (samādhi) knowledge and vision of things as they are (yathābhūta-ñāna-dassana) disenchantment with worldly life (nibbidā) dispassion (virāga)
