    Hello Friends
    I encourage you to read about the history of cigar box guitars. It's such a rich story with deep roots in Americana. It’s amazing what you can do with some scrap wood, three strings and a weekend. Do a quick image search and fall down a rabbit hole of truly artistic DIY builds.

    I've been building 3 & 4 string CBG's for a few years now. As for me, I have two goals with each build -- playability, and appearance. Both are important to me, but if the guitar doesn't play beautifully, and sound beautiful, it don't matter how beautiful it looks. If nobody wants to play it, it's nuthin' but a wall-hanger. Great video!

    I've made a number of 3 string cbgs with those My Father Cigars boxes, they're great, come in different colors (in fact I'm currently building one in black for a neighbor .. it's the 5th one I've done for him, he doesn't play them, he gives them away 🤣)
    There's a wide gamut among builders from the "meh, it's just a cigar box, the more rough and "vintage" looking the better" to "do the best your skillset allows and the some!"
    "Nothing on a cbg has to be perfect..." mostly true, they're not Fender or Les Pauls but (for me) the closest to a professional job I can get is my goal (with some "oh well, good enough" wiggle room)...
    6:43 ... that how I used to glue the scarf joint, now I use toothpicks as pins to stop the pieces from sliding, same for gluing on a fretboard
    Nice recording at the end! 👏👏👏

      I have a red one. Waiting to use it for something special. Never seen the black ones. Sounds cool. Thanks for the toothpick tip. I'll give it a shot on the next scarf joint.

    Very cool but how about you convert it into a 7 String tuned to Open G Russian Tuning for more versatility? You might have to make a new neck, get new pickups, & a special set of 7 String Russian Strings, as well as a set of 7 string tuners.

    • @hurdygurdyguy1

      Why convert it? Just get another cigar box and do a new one! 😉

      @@hurdygurdyguy1 I wanted to remodel it as a 7 string Cigar Box Guitar so I can have a larger range of notes & get a new sound that's perfect for a new song I'm working on. That new song is American Pie by Don Mclean Translated to German by the Hohner Company.

    Great video , how do you know which strings to use?

    • @MarkGutierrez
      @MarkGutierrez  2 года назад

      Hi Les, thee are no real rules. I buy normal light or medium tension acoustic guitar strings. Then only use the lowest three. I then determine which tuning suits the tension. Most other folks do it in reverse. They figure out which tuning they want to use and buy the correct gauge strings to fit the tension.

      @@antares4975I didn’t say it was, just saying for a 24 inch scale (in a GDg tuning) 42, 34, 24 works well.. rule of thumb for a longer scale use thinner strings, for shorter scale use thicker
