Garvey absolutely belongs in the HOF. I could cite a hundred stats but fact is he was the best player in the best team, and the best at his position for 10+ years. AND he also mashed in the post season as well as All Star games AND his iron man streak is an NL record to this day.
Great point. Sportswriters, like any branch of the media, know that controversy sells. For as much as Garvey's virtue was played up, the hunger for critical commentary on the squeaky clean image was significant. Davey Lopes' jealousy, along with others on those Dodgers teams, was welcomed with open arms for those that like to tear down icons. But in terms of baseball, you're absolutely right, he did look like a HOFer during his prime, only falling short as he got old in the 80s. There's no shame in that. There's lots of critical bats that fell short of the Hall. And it seems like the criticisms of Garvey so often used his statistical fall off at the end of his career to introduce the insults you mentioned, re: his wife's interview with the sports mag and Lopes' maligning. Hey, I love these new formats. Great stuff here, bud. Keep it up.
Garvey's wholesomeness and All-American looks made him a magnet for disdain by the media more than the other players. Even mild-mannered Roger Angell of The New Yorker would call Garvey out for being a pious phony, and it became a common theme over time. Garvey wasn't as nice as his image, but he was trying to live up to an ideal that had become slightly outdated to others.
I'm aware of Reggie Smith and his number s though he was before my time, but he d never be considered the second best switch hitter of all time with Chipper Jones solidifying that spot
I ve been talking about and taking this stand for this point for years and I'm so glad to hear others thinking the same... I mean who would u take, Dale Murphy or Harold baines... Dwight gooden, Bret saberhagen and Frank viola, or Gaylord Perry, neikro, or Bert blyleben. as for hitters....why does hanging on to accumulate more stats make u an all time great.?? I always thoht u should huge a player by his best 7-10 years, and how dominant was he over the other players of the time, because stats fluctuate through decades. when Dale Murphy won two mvp s in a row..82-83, no one was hitting 40+ homers every year like the 60 s or the 90 s, . that Mike Schmidt hit 500 he s during his career is one of the most underappreciated accomplishments in sports. 70-86 was like a mini dead all era.... I remember guys leading the league with 36 he for many of these years agree with mattingly, also Dave Parker u fail to mention also talk about the politics involved and what they did to Jim rice. as far as Mussina, his winning percentage and his era through the years. he was like a mini Maddux, he didn't dominate with a fastball like your dominant types you mention, but this doesn't mean he wasn't a hof pitcher
IMO she was one of these narcissistic type people. she totally blindsided him with that magazine interview for no reason. people like that are dangerous.
@@sportsrevisited9699 I think you’re right. I think she tended to dramatize things that weren’t even proven . Even Garvey admits that he’s no saint (2 wedlock kids). Yet he supported them. Besides, he wasn’t married to Cindy when he had the kids. Therefore, Is it really appropriate to keep Steve Garvey out of the Hall of Fame? He deserves to be there!
He was gold glove ccaliber, never mentioned his height....he was one the best first base men ever.....don't even talk about his hitting.....noboby's pperfect we could find something on any human being

Garvey was one of the best players of his era; of course he belongs in the HOF!
Well he sure is more deserving then Harold Baines

i appreciate that bud, thanks.
He also played in 5 World Series in 11 years: 74,77,78,81,84. That is phenomenal.

Cyndy also wrote a scathing book on Steve as well.

The HOF IS GARBAGE WHEN TODD HELTON AND SCOTT ROLEN GET IN WHILE BILL BUCKNER AND STEVE GARVEY NEVER GET IN. GTFOH.
