That's how scared teams were of him even before 1999. Also, 1993 Bonds was the best all around version of Bonds as he still had his speed, was stealing bases & winning Gold Gloves to go along with the HRs, batting average, RBIs, doubles, triples, etc.

Thome I don’t think even went to the gym tbh. All he did was hit HRs. Zero athletic ability. Was never the best player on his team. I had Justice rated above Thome as a kid in my infallible and unquestionable hierarchy of 90s baseball players. Thome is one of the lowest rated players in my rankings who is in the HOF. Lofton, Justice, Belle, Ramirez were all better players. Thome was not a good fielder, did not hit for average, so bad at moving runners over. He got on base a lot, but ran like he was carrying a piano. Zero impact outside of his ABs which means he’s not a good player in my infallible rankings. He’s not in my HOF.

@5:30 is the issue with Bonds. He absolutely did not need supplements to be one of the all time greats. He had everything in the first parts of his career and didn’t need anything “extra” to be a great play. The problem is how obvious he grew at his age. To be able to work that hard at his age, travel, practice, grow a few hat and shoe sizes and not break down just doesn’t compute.

Bonds was an absolutely great player. Not only was he an exceptional hitter well before the rood era hit, and his own obvious use, but he was a threat on the basepaths and a plus defender in every OF spot he played. I personally believe he put together a HoF worthy career prior to 2000, but is that enough after the roid era? That I cannot say. If I had a vote, I think I would eventually vote Barry in… but not until it was his last ballot eligible year.
As for Pete, the moment the MLB got into bed with betting agencies, thus creating the same manner of potential corruption that Pete was accused of…. Pete Rose and any of the HoF worthy Black Sox should have been put in.
