  • Have you noticed the increase in news about ebike batteries causing deadly fires? I've noticed that the media has been announcing a lot more news about deadly fires caused by Ebike Batteries. Lectric Ebikes has also announced that they have launched an upgraded battery for their Lectric XP 1.0 and 2.0 models! The increased capacity that the new batteries have can increase the average range of a ride by up to 45%! This is huge news and a really strong indication we will continue to see advancements in battery technology and capability.
    In this video, I'll share what I've discovered about ebike battery fires and what really causes most of them. They are quite rare, but when they do burst into flames, I've found a few patterns in the news that indicate most battery fires can probably be prevented.

    In order to prevent overcharging I added a timer (basically an on/off power switch). From Amazon a BN-LINK 12 Hour Indoor Mechanical Grounded Outlet. ($9.99). It is a timer that plugs into a regular AC outlet, and has an output AC outlet on the side. It is equipped with a timer from 0-12 hours, in 15 minute increments . To use it, plug the bike into the charger, then charger into the timer, then plug the timer into the AC outlet. So far no power is turned ON. Now rotate the timer to the amount of time you want to charge. The bike will charge until the set time and then everything turns off. After that all you have to connect and disconnect is the bike end of the charger. When the timer is off, so is the charger.

    Batteries get hot 🥵 when you ride so……what i do is wait for a few hours before I recharge the batteries 🪫 yes let them cool 😎 🥶 down before you recharge I don’t know 🤷‍♂️ how hot 🥵 they do get while riding, but I do understand that I am not riding a Tesla car something that has a battery cooling system so keep in mind your batteries need to cool down before recharging 🥶.
    I should not have to say this but some people are not that smart 😬

    Design the charger with a thermostat that will shut the charger off when the battery circuit temperature rises to an unsafe level. Also, design them to automatically shut down when the battery 90% or 95% charged.

    That said, I charge and store my batteries in a 1” thick granite box. It won’t stop the fluorene gas released in the burn, but at least contain the flames. I look forward to development of “solid state” (non-liquid dielectric) batteries which don’t take forever to charge.

      I hear you. The fire possibility is concerning and although I know that it’s overhyped by the media, I live in a condo complex and a fire would put a lot of people in danger. I only charge my batteries when I’m home and in the livingroom where I can keep an eye on it so if a fire breaks out I can hopefully toss the battery over the balcony and address the fire internally quickly. It might be wishful thinking that I’d be able to actually get close enough to the battery but I don’t have a lot of choice and have to go by faith that fires are actually extremely rare with name brand stuff. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

    I got an archeer ebike and the guy who sold it to me worked with it for months, he bought a second battery and sold it to me with 2 and it doesn't even get warm the charger get a warm but not hot it's really safe it turns off by itself I think the problem with fires is because those people buy them without their original charger or battery and replace them with the wrong volts or amps or a cheap one from China website also guys the repair ebikes cut on cost when they repair or guys who mess with the controller ( separate box or a code on the display that disable the speed control to make them go faster )which makes the battery hot when they press the throttle for a long period and then teens charge them right after they get back without letting the battery cool down ...is good if the battery is detached from the bike and put on a lipo bag that always supervised and on your view while you on your computer etc never overnight or out of sight...if any sound or steam before they burst you can take the fireproof bag outside

    Lectric is always a little behind the curve on batteries. They were providing midrange cells. Going to 14 aH means they are going from 2600 aH cells to 3500 aH cells. Nearer top end. Go with 21700 and get 5000 aH. 20 aH in same package. Prices are dropping pretty steadily.

    We see videos about how to up-power your ebike to go faster, this will do bad things to your battery. Ebike is locked to a safe speed to NOT overtax the battery which then can cause them to overheat. If you want a faster bike, order one for the speed you want to go.

      Banning is the easy fix instead of looking at the real issues. Here (the netherlands) with >50% of all bikes being sold its now ebikes and with 3.8M ebikes thats not even on the radar anymore. There is a danger in the states for a simple ban for good or (politics) bad reasons instead of using laws and other steps to solve the issue. battery fires happen here not but in the scale that (if true) is happening in NY.

      @@ronalddaub9740 you measure the cell voltages at the point where they connect to the bms. Cells in parallel will all have the same voltage so you will have to measure them at different state of charge to find irregularities

    • @elk3909
      @elk3909 Год назад

      @@ronalddaub9740 the battery will not "just go critical". There will always a cause such as a cell group going over 4.2 volts during charge. Or a damaged low quality cell developing dendrites that breach the seperator and shorting it also during charge. During discharge the bms may not cut off and a cell group may go reverse polarity as this will cause a fire.
      I prefer to build my own lithium batteries so i can do all the testing and monitoring in real time while charging and discharging.

      Unfortunately, I would say you really should replace the battery if it’s not acting the way it should. It is my understanding that damaged batteries are more likely to cause fires. I definitely would stop trying to charge it. An ebike shop repair person should be consulted to be sure though.
      Sorry to hear about your fall. I hope you’re physically doing ok. You may want to reach out to the ebike company for a more reliable answer. I’m definitely not an expert in batteries and repairs but just going off what I’ve heard from others.

  • @garypowell1540

    Sod your tips. the best possible way not to be personally responsible for an EV fire and possibly the deaths of many people is to not buy one under any possible circumstances. OK, maybe one. If you own a farm or a large piece of land and keep it overnight in the middle of a fallow field then maybe. However, don't rush as when this becomes common knowledge you will be able to buy one for nothing, indeed maybe less than nothing, as soon enough the owner will need to pay big simply to dispose of it. It is already estimated to cost around £2000 to scrap an EV car. The only reason why few have paid this as they can still get more than this from the scrap dealer. However, this is not going to last as the thing gets older and the spare parts are worth less. The battery itself is not an asset as it is not resellable and costs far more to safely dispose of than the value of the recovered metal.

    • @EbikeProducts
      @EbikeProducts  10 месяцев назад

      I heard that an ex-Tesla engineer just started a company that is able to recycle car and ebike batteries very effectively. I hope the rumors are true as I too am concerned when these batteries start getting old. I believe fireproof battery storage boxes or bags will be the next hot marketed item soon. That way more than just the farm owners can safely own these things. All your concerns are legit, and I really hope we have some smart people solving those issues soon.

    I am not saying no battery fires happen here (the netherlands) but i do feel less junk is sold. With 3.8M ebikes around and more than 50% of new bicycles being ebikes its a good 'testing' ground. Brands do matter many use the bosch system and they have been charging things in powertools for decades. Yes they do cost a new battery for my ebike is $800. I am sure the difference between issues is like 100x between good and bad brands. Also many charge them in special areas for bikes (mostly concrete) this also makes it safer and my guess is on avg the wiring at 240volts will be better. All that stated if i would have to charge my ebike inside while i am not there and/or asleep and i would possibly endanger others i would get a charge-box todo it just to feel better they cost about $400-$500.

If you are going to lock up your bike outside and leave it for a while, anyone who knows these bikes can easily crack open your bike and steal the battery. The only way to keep the battery safe would be to take it with you & we all know taking out the battery is a pain in these Lectric bikes. Don't understand why they thought this was a good method to take out the battery - other bikes just use a key to unlock the battery

      I recommend the Ride-Kick power trailer. Used mine for years with lead-acid batteries and never had a problem.

    Man... no technology is squeezing 45% more charge... I mean capacity, in your packs. You got big cases with lots if air and less cells in the first place then spent some more on the _new,_ 45% _bigger_ packs.
    By volume, the case you were waving here could holt one kilowatt.

    Not better technology, they just filled out the shell with more cells. I wish it was true they uncovered tech that was 40% more efficient.

    Keep the battery cool when you charge it. Also, only use the charger that comes with your bike and/or battery. And always disconnect the charger when the battery is topped off.
    This "technology" can be temperamental.

    "News" is anecdotal information at best, looped, exaggerated and distorted at worst. That said, it's capable of ruining the public evaluation of perfectly good technology.
    No mention of a reliable and safety-certified power source - in NYC, extension cord nests are used to run battery chargers.

    You will not be able to extinguish a lithium battery fire. Don't try.

    I wonder when other new batteries; Sodium, aluminum, magnesium... will be on the market, regular Lithium ion batteries are too expensive, dangerous and bad for the environment.

    I'd say the best way to avoid them is not to buy them. I never had a fire with my power trailer using lead-acid batteries. I'm not saying it's not possible but I'm blessed to never have had one ever.

      Yikes! Pardon my ignorance, but does the sticker not hold any value? I was under the impression that it meant that there were safety standards that it needed to pass in order to get the UL sticker? Please educate me, I honestly thought that it was something to look for.
