    Loved this band, I met them and hung out with them at 2 shows in the New England area, three of the nicest coolest guys I've ever met, they even dedicated a song to my buddy and me.

    Jogging my memory here. The Hollywood Palladium had Slade, The James Gang, Lynard Skynard and Brownsville Station all on one gig back in I think 74. Slade was headliner. All four bands kicked complete ass. I liked Michael Lutz's bass playing and also his sound, a Fender Precision copy made in England called a Heyman 20/20 and tons of Sunn amps. Clear but loud as you can imagine. Brownsville had a great mix, Cub and H-bomb were phenomenal. I was in high school then. My ears rang hard!!

    Like Grand Funk, the critcs hated Brownsville Station. Never listen to critics - they generally have their own agendas. This band played infectious boogie rock, and I loved their albums..

    I dig the Crue, too, but the original version as shown here by Brownsville just kills the cover that Motley did. This has heart, attitude, and balls! Love it!

    I stand corrected. And I agree. They came to town long before that so called hit, and toned down from the sound on stage. Those Marshalls pumped. I wish I had that chance to know him. I think it was around 1971. Came a couple times, to a full house. Lol, the first time they came I don't recall the bass player, he came out on the floor, and asked my brother to strum the bass...I play guitar, my brother drums....he told my brother not hard enough do it again....was great.

    Also , I feel very fortunate I knew Cub in the capacity that I did. He treated everyone like an old buddy.He really did sound like the classic live "Smokin'" intro that's NOT on this clip (Look for it !). A lot of people knew himmuch better than I did , but , I told him I liked Brownsville AND his solo stuff. He told me that meant a lot to him , because a lot of people could'nt agree on both. WHY?!!!

      Cub Koda, the lead singer/guitarist, died in 2000. This was the first band I ever saw live at a Toys for Tots concert in Louisville, KY in 1973.

    Aside from that, Cub Koda has done lots of music stuff - I'd say a career spanning 1966 through mid-2000 qualifies as something other than one-hit-wonders.

    This performance from the Midnight Special doesn't do these guys justice... I've seen some Awesome Rock concerts over the years from the 70's on and this trio was "THE BEST" live show that I've ever seen back when their "Kings of the Party" song came out when they had opened for ZZ Top's Fandango Tour... They blew the roof off the place that night!!! AMAZING SHOW!!! ZZ Top wasn't anywhere near the energy level of those 3 guys, so it would have been more appropriate for ol' ZZ Top to have opened up for Brownsville Station that night! Hands down, THE BEST Live Performance I've ever seen.
    :-)!!!!

    My band got to share the stage with Brownsville Station at The Crazy Horse in Kalamazoo back in 1969. These guys were nuts...all 4 of 'em at the time. Pie fights on stage. We got to play "Catch The Bass Player" with Tony Dreggins (you had to be there). Cubby smashed a guitar for their finale, but the neck split in his hands. Not sure how many stitches it took to fix him up. They were great people; I got to reconnect with Michael in the early '90s. Honestly a shirt-off-his-back individual.

    How is anyone kind of dead ? Even after the hits were long behind him , Cub recorded and performed on a regular basis , did the Vinyl Junkie column for Goldmine , wrote "Blues For Dummies" and lots of liner notes , I think Rhino's Yardbirds 2 CD set was his last. He also reformed The Points . and worked with Hound Dog Taylor's Houserockers , previously. I corresponded with Cub . He was tough , he thought he'd make it. So did I.

    YES , AND THEIR VERSION OF "I'M THE LEADER OFTHE GANG (I AM) " BY GARY GLITTER WAS A FOLLOW - UP HIT TO "SMOKIN'". IT DID'NT ECLIPSE THEIR FIRST HIT , BUT , IT DID WELL.....

  • @pfordsq
    @pfordsq 11 лет назад

    Bruce ! No way. You know , a lot of people feel the self - titled Private Stock LP IS YOUR BEST ALL - AROUND ALBUM. I agree.
    "Lady" should have been a BIG -ASS hit , though. Did you like The Pirates' version?

  • @pfordsq
    @pfordsq 11 лет назад

    No big thing...I'm trying to remember ....If you saw them in 1971 , it should have been Tony Driggins (Who passed away in 2000 , I only recently learned.) on bass and Michael Lutz on 2nd Guitar. When Driggins left , Lutz took over on Bass , that's why you see him , in other Midnight Special clips , climbing on those double Marshall stacks , Bass strapped on , then jumping off ! THOSE GUYS WERE FUCKING NUTS !!!! God Love 'em.

    Huh, this guy don't even know the half. Cub Coda knew rock, huge collection. They came to my hometown a couple times. The best live show ever (EVER??? EVER!!!?LOL). The bass olayer came out onto the floor and wanted people to strum the strings....we never had bands like that put on such a great show. Smokin in the Boys Room was just the surface. One hit wonder, huh. Bite me. Cub Coda was rock.

    CUB'S KNOWLEDGE OF ROCK'N'ROLL , BLUES , COUNTRY , R'N'B , ROCKABILLY , ETC , WAS LIKE A BOTTOMLESS PIT , CHOCK FULL OF GREAT STUFF. I KNEW HIM IN PASSING , AND HE WAS NO MUSIC SNOB . MY FRIEND SAW THEM WITH THEIR FIRST BASS PLAYER , A 6 ' SOMETHING BLACK GUY NAMED TONY DRIGGS , WHO WOULD JUMP INTO THE CROWD , BASS STRAPPED ON , AND MY FRIEND AND HIS BUDDIES HAD A HELL OF A TIME GETTING HIM BACK ONSTAGE!
    WONDERS , YES. ONE- HIT , HELL , NO. BUT , IT IS SPELLED "KODA" WITH A "K".
