Well, shops don't close because of "siesta" (nap)... that's a big CLICHE I'm happy to clarify. Shops and other small businesses close from ~14.30 to ~17 to open longer in the evening (19, 20 or 21) instead of closing at 17 or 18 like in the UK, Germany or many other countries. Why opening longer in the evening? Because you will find potential customers at 19 or 20 (when many people left already their offices and have time to shop) rather than at 16, when non-self employed workers are WORKING. I'm a Spaniard who lived abroad (in the UK) and I could not understand why shops there are closed after work and streets are dead. And apparently this is common in the anglo-saxon world. I could never get used to it and of course I came back to Spain, for that and many other reasons :) I hope this helps you understand a bit more our different schedules and you can eventually adapt. Enjoyed the video. Happy that you feel good in Spain ;)
Thank you for the insight! We figured as much the longer we live here… the shop owners may not take their siesta but WE definitely take advantage of that down time and nap in the afternoons! 😆 Especially in the summer, going out after 18:00 is so much nicer.
I hope you will get into the Valencia rhythm of life with ease. Driving is pretty crazy there… luckily you can walk and use public transit easier than in the LA…. The first weeks are always hard. But you have been doing great!. I enjoy your videos a lot. Keep it up :) enjoy your adventure, and thanks for sharing!
Aww thank you! Yes, we are happy to walk everywhere! No need for a car, driving in CA was a stressor for me so walking has been great for my mental and physical health. The first 2 months we walked 13,000 steps everyday.
We are just like you guys!! In less than 2 weeks we are moving to Valencia and have never been to Spain! I would love to talk to you about the phone thing. I'm not sure I have the Google Voice port thing down pat. And when you say get a Sim card does that mean you sign up with a carrier there at the airport? Can't wait to run into you in Valencia.
Hey Tom, how exciting! We can walk you through google porting, send us a message on Insta or FB. We’ll get around to doing a video of it but might not have it before you leave.
Thank you for sharing! It's very helpful. I have a couple of questions: after arriving in Spain, did you make an appointment to get the TIE card? Did you register yourselves to get the certificate of empadronamiento and bring this certificate to the appointment of TIE card? Thanks again. 😊
Yes we hired someone to help us with this process because getting an apartment took too long, we didn’t have time to do much else and our Spanish was limited. We did padron first then got the TIE but the consulate’s instructions didn’t say we had to do both in that order. But it was nice having our address in the TIE card already, which probably wouldn’t be there if we didn’t show the padron.
Hi we are planning on buying a property near valencia or few hours away maybe! We are still on the very beginning of this idea and we dont have idea how this would work. Do you have ideas about it? We are from Schengen country too. We will mainly use it for vacation home. We will still live in our Country.
Sorry, we have no experience with house buying in Spain yet but feel free to join our Facebook group and ask there. It’s a private group so you’ll be safe 😊 thanks for watching our videos!
Por favor las tiendas no cierran por la siesta no hagáis caso de otros youtubers americanos no lo hacen por eso sino porque son horarios partidos en los que los propietarios van a su casa a comer y estar en familia pero no para dormir la siesta
Hi Dina! The apartment hunt proved to be very difficult for us. we ended up staying in a hotel for 1 more week before we moved. We love our apartment so the it was worth the wait. Barely got the TIE appointment in time!
@@EverythingIsBoffo it would be awesome if you can do a video on tips to finding the perfect apartment. Maybe something’s we can consider or tips to know when looking for an apartment?
Spanish people aren't racist especially to Chinese people because they behave well and are hardworking. We don't discriminate anybody if they really are good people. But if foreigners are delinquents and don't follow the rules in Spain, of course we don't like them. That's not racism from Spanish people. It's racism from those foreigners.

Which Airbnb did you stay in Valencia would you mind sharing
Our Airbnb was in el carmen but i couldn’t seem to find the link to the actual house 😓
How has the long term rental process been? Are you still in an Air BnB?

Any racism, my cousin is Mexican and she is married to a Chinese guy, she said they were kind of rude at times in Spain.
From our experience they have been patient, helpful, and warm, even with our limited Spanish!
@@EverythingIsBoffo awesome 👌 I want to retire there also.
