In search of a gemstone! Gem hunting for Rhodonite.

  • Gem hunting for Rhodonite in the Ashnola river valley. Dayna and I were in search of a gemstone on my new Rhodonite claim. Rhodonite sometime forms gem crystals, but most often around here forms masses which are often used for making lapidary cabs, cabochons, carvings, spheres and eggs. Rock hunting for rhodonite is common in the Keromeos area. Rock hunters often get rhodonite from the talus slopes all around the Keromeos area. We did not find much in the way of rhodonite, however we did find a good soapstone seam and upon further research rhodonite often forms with talc (soapstone), Prospecting for gemstones is always exciting but as shown here finding gemstones is not always successful Rock hunting and gem hunting are just another form of prospecting. I will go back to the quarry or seam that we found and had obviously been worked and take a bunch of material and hopefully we will hit some better specimens of rhodonite.

Hi.Dan.Going back to the early 60s 62 -63 my father was the road enginere that built the Ashola road. There was a lot of drilling and blasting going on.We spent our weekends up there, the fishing was fantastic. And my mother collected several hundred pounds of the pink rock just because it was pretty.into the 70s she met a woman in chilliwack that made jewerly. That woman gave Mom 1500.00 for all that pink rock. She explained what it was and wanted more. But we moved north. We also found a cabin that was falling down. The door posts were still standing.Engraved in the top beam was.(Bill MInor 1859).I was about 6 years old at the time but will never forget that cabin. That was 60 years ago.I am sure there is nothing now. This is where a metal detector can come in handyJust a thought,Mcbain.

The intense beauty found in nature is the best part of prospecting... gold and gems are just the icing on the cake. Too many folks don't appreciate that enough, but getting out in all that beauty and doing what you love to do is THE BEST!!!

In that area, the mountains are very steep and dangerous.
In the late 1800's hundreds of American young men scoured in search of treasure.
    GOLD!
Yet as difficult as the terrain is I sure there are treasures yet to be found.
Dan, you were not skunked, like most great discoveries it takes time.
    Thanks for the adventure.

@@Danhurd The taller mountains have some gold deposits so I was told.
      Nothing to write home about.
Really a beautiful part of British Columbia.
Yes, there this is a Jems area, have no dought.
You will find them as I say it will take time.
You may have a good chance of finding B.C.Jade too.
      Please be careful.

Hello Dan Hurd. I would like to thank you for the Easter paydirt which I finally have been able to pan and find all my wonderful Treasures that you had inside. It took me a little bit to get my Garrett gold panning set and learn how to use it, Watching you was very helpful. I'm not totally sure that I did not miss some flower gold but I do know I got all of the gems!!!!!😉🤑🤑🤑🤑 but I did save all of it to try again after a little experience panning. Once again thank you for your great videos an educational knowledge of prospecting. I have recently planned a trip too North Carolina to pan for garnets and rubies and hopefully some smoky quartz if I am lucky I will be able to send you some in return.
Truly your friend and student, Jeff Brewer..

Jeff since you are new if you pan out your concentrates at home in a tub add a few drops or a squirt of Jet Dry to the water. It breaks down the water tension and the flour gold will not float on the top of the water, it will drop to the bottom. That’s just if you are worried about getting ever little speck of flour gold too.

    • @Brewersprospecting420
      @Brewersprospecting420 5 лет назад +1

Mark Bohamed I did pan this at home in a tub and just did not have any Jet-Dry. That's why I say that I might have missed some of the flower gold.

I went for a short search for Rhodonite float on the island last year, after a bit of reading.
The advice I found was to bring a hammer and chip the pure black rocks to remove the oxidized manganese...
Very hard to spot it amongst all the other black rocks.

I read about how to make an industrial tumbler out of a rear axle of a big semi truck with the rims and tires in place. You want to cut an opening in the highest part of the rim to load rocks. The article said a cover is not needed but I always thought if I was going to do one I would have a hinged door sealed with inner tube rubber. The idea is to set up a motor geared down so the tires rotates slowly and all the rocks stay in the lowest part of the tire at all times tumbling over each other. Each tire can hold about 100 lbs of rocks and you have 4 tires going at all times each one with a different grit. Always use same tire for the same grit. You rotate the rocks once a week and you have a 100 lbs of polished tumbled stones each week.

Dan, I went to Vancouver Island with my family when I was a small child, and first rockhounding -- we ended up accidentally driving up an old logging road to "Hill 60" and had a pleasant afternoon with the (rather surprised) fire-watch ranger up there. He showed me where to find some rhodonite, and pointed out that sometimes it comes in yellow and black, instead of pink and black! You might eventually find the butter-yellow variety on your claim, too! Thanks for sparking memories!
