3:29 you misheard, he's not saying "the things I did up there *in* high school" but "the things I did up there *were* high school". He's basically saying "oh, the stuff I did in life, the reason I ended up in hell? That was child's play (high school). What I'm gonna do in hell will be so much worse (going for my degree)"
Black Gryphon’s song “Dasies” is a prequel to this song. Highly recommend checking that out next. Another Alastor song I would recommend is “Smile Like You Mean It” by Paranoid DJ
Radio Play by the same team as Insane and Dasises also gets stuck in my head on the regular. Edit - @sixofbones Commented on this specifically to suggest Radio Play, only to see someone beat me to it, lol!
Black Gryphon was Alastor's singing VA for the Pilot, yes! "The things I did up there were high school, but now I'm going for my degree!" = The things I did when I was alive (on Earth) were bad enough, but I'm going to do even worse down here (in Hell)! Also, you must check out Daisy now, since it's a prequel for this song!
As a giant Alastor fan the thing that draws me into his character is definitely the mystery surrounding him. Who did he make the deal with? Why does he smile all the time? Is he actually a friend to Charlie? What are his true intentions? But I also adore the charisma of the character and how sassy he is
I would never want to meet Alsdtor but I love him as a character. He is a mystery and a paradox. You know he is terrible to Husk but seems so sweet to Nifty. He is amazing in visual and sound design. He is like one of those classic Disney villains you can enjoy. Plus he is Ace.
@@beckawilk Absolutely agree, I simp for him so hard but if I ever meet anyone like him I'm fucking booking it lol Also isn't it at least highly implied that he just respects women more than men (except Vaggie and Susan of course)
@@kai_abc8949 He generally has more respect for women than men, yes. There's actually some fan speculation that his targets as a serial killer were male abusers since Viv's previously described him as similar to Dexter Morgan (fictional killer who targets uncaught serial killers) and released a prequel comic in which he eviscerates a guy for attempted SA. Far as I know, the prequel comic is still canon.
This song made its way to my Spotify top 5 in 2024. He’s the OG singing voice from the pilot while Ed Bosco did the speaking voice. Ed Bosco is also the current Striker voice in Helluva Boss taking over for Norman Reedus.
What's always drawn me to Alastor was his sheer villainous _panache._ He's one of those villains that you _know_ is up to no good, but you can't help wanting to see what he does _next_ -- think characters like The Joker as a comparison.
"the things i did up there were high school" means what he did while he was alive, "now i"m going for my degree" means now that i am in hell i am going to do much worse
Charm, charisma, character design, creepy, sadistic, yet despite all this has a loose moral code, funny, mysterious, intriguing, etc. Alastor is in the same vein as Light Yagami or Joker. He's sadistic and twisted, but fun and interesting. You always wanna know what his next move is, what he's planning. You KNOW he's evil, you KNOW he's dangerous, but you just can't help rooting for the guy. Like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees. You SHOULDN'T wanna watch him slaughter a bunch of people, but it's so damn entertaining when he does. Especially in Hell, where like 90% of the people he's pointing his malevolence towards are just as bad if not worse than him or at the very least are attempting to cause harm to Charlie, Angel, the Hotel, etc. So even though what he's doing is still technically evil, he's a force of evil that is also on the protagonists' side(s). Me, personally, I love Alastor cause I LOVE how scary he is. Yet while being an absolutely terrifying psycho, he's got a class and style with wit, charm, and charisma PLUS he's DOUSED in an outfit that is almost entirely red and that's my favorite color. Also he's somewhat based on a Wendigo, which I find very interesting as mythological stuff and monsters are very cool to me. There is so much about Alastor that is interesting, I can scarcely imagine why anyone WOULDN'T be a fan of him even if reluctantly.
Original Alistor singing voice actor also listen to Daisies if you haven't he was the singing voice of Alistor in the pilot in the comics there are soft canon backstories (like how the pilot is soft canon so some things that happen are canon) both Angel and Alistor's backstories are revealed (or at least a soft canon version) he was a serial killer and radio host when he was alive
As a HUGE fan of Alastor (and Lucifer), I love his charisma the most. Yes, he's a monster with a big scare factor, but he's just so damn charming about it all! He's also witty, cheeky, sassy, catty, mysterious, and just overall one of the most entertaining characters in the show! Plus he's hot so- I've been a fan since Viv was still writing her Zoophobia comic and first introduced him, I could tell even then that I would like his character!
@selenawolf2466 Same, I was quite invested in the story! I wanted to find out more about Damien and his family, his cousin, the cursed dog that can't die, what the heck Zooble's (or whatever his name is) species is and where he came from, what were those vampires up to, and learn more about the teachers and their world. It was such an interesting concept (very fanfic-esk lol) and I really wanted more!
this remains one of my favorite HH songs, even if BG is no longer the voice actor. It really sets the tone for Alastor as a character. Lyrically and vocally, its a great song.
What he means by "What I did up there were high school but now I am going for my degree" is that his murder spree on earth was child's play and that he is going to be much worse in hell
Gabriel Brown (AKA Black Gryph0n) was Alastor's singing voice back in the _Hazbin_ pilot. He's also voiced characters and sung songs for _Billie Bust-Up_ and the musical parody group The Chalkeaters, to say nothing of his fan work for _Hazbin, Helluva Boss_ and _TADC._
I was immediately interested in Alastor when he first appeared in the pilot episode. I love his quick wit, how quick he is to jump into song or dance, how he is both sassy and charismatic. But I also am interested in how nuanced he is. He has a weird moral code (may or may not still be canon, hasn't been touched in the actual show but he was inspired by the show Dexter and has been shown in his comic to go after criminals who target those weaker than them). He doesn't like to be touched but will use touch himself to manipulate people around him. He's said to be one of the most powerful overlords but outside of defending the hotel he is just chillin. He's surrounded by sexual debauchery but he doesn't let that change anything about him, he is asexual and not interested (and as an ace myself, I love him even more for being ace rep). He also doesn't let the constant changes with time alter what he finds enjoyable. I'm REALLY curious about how a powerful overlord ended up selling his soul, and what he got out of it, who he sold it to. Even if he ends up becoming the villain of the show - kinda doubt it, maybe something like an anti hero or slight antagonist - I still will think he's neat, tbh. Won't be the first time my favorite character is a villain haha!

When alastor was alive he was a serial killer that killed criminals. The line ‘the things i did up there were highschool but now i’m going for my degree’ is basically saying he’s gonna do much worse now he’s in hell
"The things I did up there were high school, but now I'm going for my degree" Is just saying that when on earth the bad things he did would be nothing to compare to what he plans to do in hell Also as an alastor fan, I purely enjoy him for the insane character that he is. Do I think it's cool anytime he does something awful? Most of the time, but do I wish for the hotel and people to succeed. I like the writing of the character, doesn't mean I want him to succeed in doing anything bad. Do I think it would be interesting for him to redeem himself? Yes (not like go to heaven but to be a better person(demon)), but honestly I think it would make for better story writing if he stayed his insane, selfish, sadistic self. So yeah would cheer on his choas but still want the hotel to win overall
Helluva Boss is an adorable, lore-heavy romp through a unique world. Hazbin Hotel is the one where I remember all these characters are actual demons and its low-key sometimes terrifying.

You should listen to "Thank You and Good Night", it's a song Black Gryph0n wrote for most of the pilot voice actors to sing, as kind of a farewell to the fans. ^^
I like Alastor because he is creepy and not to be messed with. And some of the things he says in the show is fantastic!! Can't wait for season 2!
5:02 "What draws you to this guy?" Originally I was just really entertained by Alastor's theatrics and radio schtick and utterly delighted for sex-repulsed asexual (possibly aroace) representation. There's hints that he does has a moral code (which Viv confirmed) and that he's growing a smidge fond of the hotel crew. It sets up a fun direction for him to go from selfish trickster to begrudging loyal-but-still-morally-dubious ally. TLDR - Alastor is a chaotic neutral puzzle box that I want to pick apart and observe under a microscope. I'm also endeared by his theatrics and being canonically asexual (and likely sex-repulsed and possibly aromantic).
An ice-cold opinion: Alastor is my favorite character. For me he scratches the Id portion of my psyche where you do whatever you want & need in order to obtain power. However, he uses the max of his Super Ego to do this - he carries himself extremely well in a dignified, * controlled *, but calculative manner. When someone presents themselves like this, it conveys confidence vs insecurity like internet "alpha males" that are so over-the-top and talk way too much. When when he mocks people, you can only protest so much because he hits on true flaws. Worse, even his deepest digs are done so passive aggressively (which you can argue requires a decent level of intelligence even if it's manipulative) so if a character completely goes off on him, the other person looks crazy no matter how justified their anger is. I feel these qualities stand out more with him as a character in this show because it takes place in Hell where most characters are crude, sex-obsessed, and pretty much run 100% on loud, abrasive Id. And of course with his power, you almost have no choice BUT to respect him even when you can tell he doesn't think too highly of you. I remember a joke from Bill Burr saying we should be more scared of the guy who can build the bombs vs the guy who simply has them. I think Alastor is the guy who has the bombs AND knows how to build them.
I don't think the music would technically fall under swing however what was going on in the song that you used to identify it as swing is called scat and is common in jazz.
