I met someone early in my YT journey randomly because we were making similar content and we started commenting on each other’s videos. We have since become really good friends and communicate daily! It makes such a huge difference to have even one person to go through this with that gets it. If it weren’t for her I probably would have quit already! I do think it’s hard to find people to network with though. Maybe a video on how to do just that would be helpful?

Really great info here, Nick. A lot of this ties into personal branding and soft skills. In my 7+ years on RUclips, I can attest that it's easy to get bogged down in the details about how to make a video (quality, length, etc), but none of that will matter if you're not connecting with the person on the other side taking their time to watch your video. The paradox is, you gotta get them into the video to start to make that connection, and there are hard skills (topics, thumbnails, titles, hooks) you need also, and that stuff constantly evolves with the platform and audience interests.
Being a creator is really like navigating a 3D surface which is constantly moving. I enjoy riding the waves! (Most of the time)

I believe I possess all those personality traits that you mentioned lol. I started my channel in May 2019, and along the way I've learned so many things that helped my channel grow (some from you, Nick, for which I am truly grateful :). Even though my channel is currently demonetized until I reapply on February 16 for remonetization, I continue to upload shorts and videos just to let YT know - as well as my followers - that I don't have any intention to stop and that monetization is not my priority. I think my biggest challenge is convincing repeat viewers (who are not subscribers) into subscribing to my channel, you know, people who can't commit. Lol. Anyway, my goal this year is to double my current number of subscribers, so I will have to work extra hard. :)

The more I see RUclipsrs sitting in front of visible microphones, in addition to all the live-streams, the more I tend to think of RUclips as a career in "broadcasting." I noticed it especially when headphones are worn, and I'm reminded of Howard Cosell. Then you have to ask yourself, "Do I want to be in broadcasting?" Only, not only are you broadcasting, but you're required to deal with all the technical aspects as well...mics, cameras, lighting, set-ups, scripts...it gets overwhelming. Howard Cosell had it easy!

There are many ways to do RUclips and vlogging is only one of them.
Howard Cosell had a team that made sure he looked and sounded good, but those days are long over (unless you ARE on corporate television or radio). It would have been interesting to see what some of the old announcers would have done with RUclips though.

The ones I watch usually are well planned and thought out on the content they intend to cover, show their mistakes without shame (makes them relatable and human), have a cheerful attitude and some fun personality quirks. Some reference their families and occassionally show moments of joy and even hardships (everyone being sick or a brief stint in the hospital), making them more relatable to their audience. They're also in most cases very organized in their craft rooms, spaces, etc. Being humble and not arrogant also helps a lot. And yes, many will try new things for a project that they haven't done before and show you what they learned from it too. Skills take time to build, so don't expect perfection every time or right away. And giving credit where credit is due also doesn't hurt.

Thanks for this! I think point #2 really hits home, especially as a new person creating content. When you are new you are nervous and thinking about yourself (or at least, I am), it takes more effort to forget about yourself and think more about what you are saying is actually being received. Obvious to type out but it's easy to shift focus and lose that detachment. I've been enjoying creating content just because I love what I talk about, but it is tough spending a lot of time on something only to not have anyone pay it much attention. Will work on incorporating these tips. :)

We all need to start from somewhere. I believe learning new skills and applying them is really important. I am completely fine talking to people but I have that strange feeling of coming in front of the camera hence I thought I should a faceless channel where I apply all the new skills I learn and share any existing knowledge I have with people. Take it easy and hope Dubai treated you well. Stay Blessed mate 🙂

It's all about persons communication skill set and on air personality. I've noticed that people in my niche who are successful on RUclips often come from backgrounds that transfer well to the platform, such as teachers, public speakers, preachers, TV production, and TV producers. This personality skill set doesn't always make them the best, but they are the most enjoyable to watch. I've watched channels with actual experts, real experts, who have only a few hundred followers. But they are just hard to watch and listen to. Sometimes, you need to look at it as not always the most knowledgeable person for the subject or niche is the one you see. What you see mostly is the person with the best personality skill set within that subject or niche, not the subject expert.

My plan is to push back. A lot of people want to go back to the classic days of youtube. They dont care how the platform is changing, they just want to watch people "broadcast [them]self" like it used to be. So I want to lean into that, since I was around in those days, and I know how to do that version of youtube decently. I mean sure, I might mix in some modern stuff too. There have definitely been some changes for the better. I'll just create what I want, and if no one watches, well at least I tried.
