I'm not a dancer... and it's so interesting to watch a dance that looks funny/easy, only to find out there's such a complex technique and so much work and dedication behind it. Beautifully done!

You are the only person I've seen to record a tutorial mostly with your back facing the camera. The other day I was just thinking about how easy would have been if all dance tutorials were shot that way. Extremely, extremely helpful making total difference in perception and understanding. If the person is facing the camera then you have to convert the move in 180 degrees which is unneeded conversion especially for beginners. I started watching Sven Otten's neo-swing and shuffling, but today I decided to check the charleston and swing moves, which are essential. Always back to basics. Thank you so much. You are simply awesome!

In mid Z0s, there was nameless
dsnce now called l’indy Charleston that now looks like
      1/2 20s Charleston & 1/2
z as Lindy Hop. There is at leas1 musical film.

I agree. And I’m compelled to add, with a disclaimer first: I know that country music is like black licorice; you either love it or you hate it. But I love it. And I must say that this vantage also applies to country line dancing (as well as many other styles, of course). I always tell newcomers to avoid that wallflower impulse to try a new dance from the outskirts. If you’re just learning a new dance, you must make your way to the middle of the dance floor. That way you’ll always have someone in front of you, to remind you of the steps, no matter which wall you’re facing. Cheers! (BTW I also love black licorice.)

The dance is wonderful as others pointed it out but the delivery of the lesson is so amazing, it really hints a nice character and just how much energy is within. Gotta love those hummings and sounds that are perhaps not even fully intentional while doing some motions, especially with a sweet voice like that - I think it's able to reach the inner child in us in a certain way.

When I suggest we go out dancing , my friends think that means sitting at the bar on tinder. No baby I’m trying to get down on the floor! The sounds are really useful, thanks! I’m learning my first dance style and I got told this was quite easy to do and this really helps!
Also, when I mean ‘the sounds’ I mean when you ‘said’ the beats and ‘kick, step’ and stuff like that.

quite interesting to see how this influenced house / techno dance styles but then one should also look at some west African dances - those are magical

"The Charleston is said to be based on the “Juba,” a dance brought to Charleston by enslaved African Americans + performed by dock workers in the early 1900’s. The Juba involves rhythmic stomping, kicking, + slapping, and it became a challenge dance of the [African] American community at the time."
The song, The Charleston, composed by James JIMMY Johnson
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_P._Johnson
Appropriated like most cultural contributions by Black people in the U.S.

Absolutely. There is a whole bit in description to this video about the history of this dance. Thank you for putting it in the comments for not everyone reads descriptions.
Though history of the dance is not that simple as I found out doing research for its subjectively documented and there are a few versions of the history. There is a whole blog about the history of Charleston and its versions I wrote here, you might find it interesting secretsofsolo.com/2020/08/the-history-of-the-charleston-dance/

Shoes question: I was having problems twisting then realized I had rubber soled shoes (just one of the problems!). Guessing I need leather??

    • @secretsofsolo
      @secretsofsolo  6 месяцев назад +1

Hi! Leather or foam or ...socks :) You need shoes and surface that is not too sticky. Otherwise, its hard to twist and your ankles and/ or knees might feel the impact later.

@@secretsofsolo Thank you so much. I have been practicing twisting in socks on the kitchen floor :-) I will be looking for leather bottoms.

What would be really helpful is if when you talked about rhythm you would show a diagram of the rhythm. Learning about the triplet feel of swing music and how the swing rhythm is generated musically would make things easier for me to understand.
