      🙏 I am not a influencer. I answer questions that sw engineers have which they did not get an answer elsewhere. About mainframe The global Mainframe market is valued at 4877.7 million USD in 2020 is expected to reach 5865.8 million USD by the end of 2026, growing at a CAGR of 2.6% ]. A 4 to 5 billion market is not small. Also the competition is very less. Salaries are high.

    I have an experience of 12 years in Mainframe. A few days back I got 3 offers from very big companies with salaries of 60 - 75 LPA.
    I was very happy but also confused about which company to join. Then my phone rang and I woke up. The incident manager had called to inform me that a job had failed and could breach SLA as I hadn't restarted it till now.
    Turns out.. I fell asleep again during my night shift in office while working on a support project.
    It was a nice dream but my career is NOT.

    • @MusingsbyAmit
      @MusingsbyAmit  Год назад +1

      When you see a dream in your sleep then it will go away when you wake up. But when you start seeing a dream when you are awake then that dream can come true. Thoughts lead to Beliefs. Beliefs lead to Actions. Actions lead to results. But everything in this world starts from a thought.

    • @coolchandra

      @@MusingsbyAmit I like your optimistic mindset however those words are not applicable in reality (at least for people like me who have more than 10 years of experience in mainframe)
      Suppose Even if I dream (being awake) of getting a higher salary, what ACTIONS do you suggest to me?
      All I can do is, be good at the job.
      But this action has no value and will not lead to any "RESULTS" because there are NO OPPORTUNITIES for mainframe programmers who have more than 10 years of experience. People get stuck at a very low salary.

Any fresher who want to grow/learn a lot or ambitious, run away like a cheetah from mainframes. Because most likely you will waste those wonderfull early years in some maintenance or testing which requires no effort but physcially present. Don't believe this guy, i have big regret of wasting many years of my life (unfair destiny) and then thru big efforts switched the career.

      The Mainframe market is big. IBM and other companies still produce these machines in fairly large numbers. Big corporations also adopt mainframe for some of the key computing scenarios. So i dont see them going down in future. But no one can predict the future. So focus on your skills. Develop skills that you can levearage across different platfotms. But keep working in MF because there will be less competition and so more money.

      @@sureshreddy7650 frankly speaking if mainframe were using c++ instead of cobol and jcl. I would had say go for it.
      Once you start learning other tech stack you will notice how bad mainframe and it ecosystem is, and why most people dont prefer it.
      Now most of companies are opting for mainframe modernization which would make mainframe skill high demand for next 15 to 20 years then for sure it will die unless a major change in its operating system and programming language used.
      I made a mistake choosing mainframe now it has been 1 year in the company I am preparing to shift to other tech stack. So 1 year wasted to be frank. Just for salary don't do it.

    • @MusingsbyAmit
      @MusingsbyAmit  2 года назад +3

      Mainframes are mainly used by large scale organizations for mission critical applications. No computing platform has the capability of handling a diversity of workloads better than a mainframe. As a result, rising need of high processing computing power is one of the important factor driving the growth of the overall mainframe market. Also lot of companies have invested in Mainframe computers. It means the technology is not dead. Nor is it going to die very soon. They are still there because none of these big companies have been able to move out of mainframe with the current stack of technology. It is very difficult to predict future of any technology. There have been technologies that looked cool and people invested time and money in it and they vanished without trace. Dont worry too much about tools or technology you learn working on any technology stack and become a master. If mainframe is replaced by something you will be the first person to know because you are working on mainframe and at that time you will be able to adopt.

      AS/400 is an IBM Server Technology and RPG is a high level programming language that works on AS/400 it is built upon COBOL and PL/i. The thing is that in today's date you hardly hear about AS/400 but there will be more than 1 Lac companies in US alone who would be using the AS/400 Systems for their IT Needs. That means there is a huge demand in RPG programmers. But the supply is less. It also means that you will have very less resources for learning RPG programming. But if you are able to do it then you can really command a very good salary. Because this skill is a rare skill. If you are ok to take that kind of risk then you can go ahead and learn RPG programming. The key players operating in the global mainframe market include BMC Software, Inc., CA Technologies, Compuware Corporation, Dell EMC, Fujitsu Ltd., HCL, Hewlett-Packard, IBM Corporation, NEC Corporation, and Unisys Corporation. The market itself is between $ 2B to $3B. This does not look huge compared to other technologies but it is substantial. The advantage for engineers working in this technology is that you will have very less competition. But disadvantage may be that you may not be able to easily see the growth path or trainings available easily.

Like you want to go into Mainframe programming or support or any other roles that are available for mainframe. You will need to attend a proper training for Mainframe. Usually big service based companies like TCS or Infosys will hire graduates and give them adequate training on Mainframe. For these companies the eligibility criteria will be same like it is for other areas of software development.

      @@varuntech265 you can also think of learning tools like sales force or pega. They are easy and in demand.

      AS400 is one of the servers which is used a lot in high performance computing scenarios like Banks, Insurance Companies and where ever the transactions are humongous. The Server is not dead yet. Also it will not die very soon. But instead of just focusing on AS400 start understanding the uses and how the technology of AS400 works to solve certain types of problems. Because whatever will replace AS400 will have to solve the same use cases and problems for the customers. Focus on technology instead of tools.

    Which best course in Aws or mainframe

      @MusingsbyAmit  2 года назад +1

      Mainframe you may not find many courses. But modern mainframes also have ability to use current OS like Linux as well as some regular programming languages. As far as AWS is concerned you can find something here bit.ly/eduALLmap

    Just to add less competition = less community support. You won't be able to solve your doubts on google just depend on your senior. If your senior is bad you are just screwed.
    But the demand is great that's true. Still I am going to shift to react 😐 mostly bze we can learn and develop using those technology on our local laptop we dont need a TSO to learn techstack.
    Also if you are quick learner willing to learn you will be anyway get better in other techstack also.
