      First of all, I'd like to pay my respect to the comments here. I love that some of you have got into gaming at a late age and still loving it.
      For me it's a little different. Born in 82, started playing games around 86/87 on my dad's spectrum, playing games like space invaders/asteroids/missile command etc on cassettes that took 30 mins to load. I have played through so many gaming generations and still going strong at 40 with no plans to stop yet.
      It helps that I'm not big on TV (other than sports, my other great passion) and don't like much music and films as of late, freeing up the limited time I have in my day to play games. It also helps that my family are also big into games. Gives us something to do together when we're at home.

Also related to the "being too old" I'm 44 & just properly got into playing games in the first lockdown (I've had consoles for a long time but didn't play every day like I do now). When I tell people I love playing games (it now sits high in my list of "what I do in my free-time", along with going to concerts) I feel like I'm being judged. I would never tell someone who lost their job "it's just a job" even tho that's how I feel about it. @@DodderingOldMan Referring to actually just playing video games, or adopting that attitude toward life? I do agree that having that attitude about life in general is a very good thing. We take things way too seriously and stress out for no reason. "Life is just a game" is honestly a philosophy that has some weight to it. But referring specifically to video games, I feel like the people who take it really seriously are usually enthusiasts. So even tho they may get unusually upset when gaming, overall it's something that's enriching their life.

    • @Donika691
      @Donika691 2 года назад +1

      @@shawnsmith4692 Unless they take it so seriously they stop enjoying it. Be passionate about it yes, but don't get so serious about it you affect the joy you used to get from it. This is of course specifically extreme cases because in most cases people are still enjoying it even if they get a little serious about it. There is also the people (often kids) who play certain online games and get overly serious to the point of raging at other players or to the point of cheating just because they want to win rather than just play and have fun. I saw this talked about with games like Among Us, that there would be players who didn't care about playing the game and only wanted to win so they would cheat. So there are scenarios where someone might take it too seriously, sometimes when you are raging you have to ask yourself "am I still having fun?"

      @@Donika691 That's a good point. Games do have the ability to push you past your emotional threshold sometimes, and especially children don't always have the self awareness to know when it's time to put the controller down. If I'm being honest I have mixed feelings about online games and the internet in general for children. I've seen how warped kids can become when they grow up in an online saturated environment. The internet is so toxic that it can make them really jaded, depressed and angry at a super young age. But short of living in the mountains like Jeremiah Johnson, idk how you could keep them away from it anymore.

He often stops to chat with the workers, no matter what their level. I've always had pleasant conversations with him. But one day, somehow, the subject of video games game up. And his face went from all smiles to an instant amalgam of disgust, contempt, and revulsion. It was so fast, I actually thought he was kidding. He spat out how some fellow millionaire had brought up something about investing in the video game industry, and how he thought it was utter nonsense. He grumbled something about not understanding how there could even BE such a thing as a video game industry, let alone . . . scoffing, he waved his hand, turned his back on me and stormed away in fury.
      Some time later, I was speaking to the Chairman's son, who was at the time the president. I mentioned the incident, and his eyes went wide with horror that I should discuss video games with his father, who sees them as nothing but a horrendous waste of time and money. I said to him, "Then I guess he wouldn't have wanted to hear that the video game industry is more lucrative than the motion picture industry . . . AND the music industry . . . *combined."* Which is 100% true, by the way. He gave me the best "are you kidding?" look and said "Uhhhh . . . no. He would NOT have wanted to hear that!"

      I once read something along the lines of "time spent enjoying something is never wasted". The way I see it is that time moves on no matter what you're doing and no-one really knows how much of it they have left anyway so might as well spend the present doing something you love. I love video games.

    Fun video, fun skit-age, and it's good to see Delsin again!
    The one at irks me is the multiplayer teammate who tries to micromanage the team in a 'no no no you're doing it wrong!' kind of way. Trust your teammates, offer tips + suggestions but in a nice way, and be encouraging or quiet. I've never seen anyone being angry towards someone else result in playing better or different. It personally just makes me anxious and more likely to make mistakes.

    The people who say "you're too old for games" are also likely to say "why do you play games?". Ironically, they're usually the same people who will happily sit still for 8 hours straight, binge watching boxsets on Netflix. Hey, at least I'm actually doing *something,* instead of passively sitting there!

    An addition to the pause I get is "Can you save?". Modern games have auto save now but back in the PS1 days or playing classics WE CANNOT JUST SAVE. Other annoyances include friends saying gaming is "childish" or the same friend wants you to help out with something and says "You'll have to give up gaming for a while...".

    Absolutely agree with the no age limit for gaming. I am a 52 yo male (with the mind of a 20 yo, and the body of a septuagenarian…).
    I have been playing computer games since I got my first computer, a VIC-20. This was the heyday of the text adventure, and I spent many an hour playing… well… “Adventure”, and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. I can recall typing out the file for an adventure game, whose name now escapes me, but one of the best spells was “Polymorph to Gerg”. I was there for “The Bard’s Tale” series, and the original “Elite”, which I played incessantly on my Commodore 64. I owned an Atari 2600 - the original, with the wood grain casing. I was there for the Vectrex (look it up). I was there for Doom, which had me sell some prized possessions, so I could afford my first PC - a 486 DX 33, if memory serves. I downloaded the Dark Forces demo from Lucasfilm Games, by ringing an international phone number (I am in Australia), and downloading the game at the heady speed of one megabyte in four minutes, only to have the first attempt drop out when 84% complete, and having to ring back and start over again…
    I can recall getting on the internet, before it was a common thing, with a dial-up subscription, to a sole server, that cost one cent per minute online. This was in the days before we had web browsers like Internet Explorer, and most pages were drawn in ascii…
    I remember 5 1/4” floppy disks, and the newer 3 1/2” disks. I can remember the launch of the Read Only CD ROM drive. I can remember Daisy-chaining PCs together so we could play games together. If I wanted to communicate with someone overseas, I would send them a letter. If I desperately needed to get in touch with someone, I could place an overseas call, and be charged an arm and a leg per minute for it.
    Today, we play games on PlayStations, X-Boxes, PCs, the Nintendo Switch, and even tablets and phones. We have VR headsets, which were literally science fiction back in the day. We have wi-fi. We have the internet. If we want to communicate with someone in the other side of the would, we can text or video chat with them, in real time (or as close to it as possible, that it’s hard to tell the difference.
    I think I was born at the perfect time, and feel lucky to have lived to see the things I have seen. And I cannot wait to see what else lies ahead…
    Gaming is in my blood. I doubt I will ever stop, unless something happens that stops me from playing, such as going blind. And even then I suspect I will find a way to keep playing games!

    What I can’t STAND the most is when people call me a “try hard” it makes no sense. Everyone is trying to win and not fail in a video game… especially in multiplayer. The people who say “try hard” say it because they aren’t good enough to beat you and are insecure about their skills so they lash out and say the cliche phrase everyone else at their skill level says.

    • @philbarton2832
      @philbarton2832 2 года назад

      THANK YOU! I was looking for this comment. You're absolutely right, a "tryhard" is said as an insult but in reality it's just a way of saying that person has outsmarted or out fought you. They lost, they should use the loss as a learning tool and use it as extra motivation to win the next time. Imagine a sprinter losing a race and telling the winner he/she only won because they're a tryhard...Yes, they put the work in and was rewarded with the win, that's what happens when you put more work into something.
