Mangrove Snake, The Best Pet Snake?

- The mangrove or gold-ringed cat snake (Boiga dendrophila) is venomous, beautiful, and notoriously grumpy. That said, they can make very interesting and spectacular captives. So, is the mangrove snake the best pet snake for you?

You guys are so RAD! - Животные
When you see a snake in a container and Clint isn’t holding it, its safe to say this is not a pet for everyone.
Yeah
@@wyoth4119yeah no
Tbh, I've handled 2 wild mangrove snakes and they're less jumpy than my corn snake
They ain’t so bad. Clint just didn’t want to risk it since she was nippy that night
ruclips.net/video/EC8dsr3_IWA/видео.html
Or could be just the individual smh
You know it's going to be a rough video when the best thing that can be said about it's handling is that there are no recorded fatalities.
More than you could say about dogs
@@PhilipOberg TBF, more people go out of their way to handle dogs. They have more opportunities to cause trouble. Thankfully my dogs are incredibly docile. As in, my neighbor's kid let himself into our house because he saw them in the window and they didn't even bark. We realized what happened when we heard him laugh. They're terrible guard dogs lmao
the mangrove snakes venom is actually not bad its only classified venomous because its venom is worse than a hognoses venom but isnt gonna kill you whatsoever.
@@erinb4237 This is correct. All docile dogs are docile, and every dog that has killed a person has killed a person. Generally aggressive dogs are more aggressive than non-aggressive dogs. For instance, my neighbor's dog who isn't aggressive is actually fairly non-aggressive for a non-aggressive dog who isn't usually aggressive to anyone, and I have had only positive experiences with him, as he isn't aggressive as a non-aggressive dog. Contrast this with an aggressive dog, like the one who killed my cousin when he was 7 years old, you will find that dogs who kill 7 year old children are aggressive (you can ascertain this by the fact that it killed a 7 year old child) and needless to say the dog was being aggressive while killing him (a dog he didn't go out of his way to handle, a fact that I know because it was a stray dog; stray meaning it had no discernable owner and was loose). As in, my cousin was killed by the dog (anecdotes such as these shall suffice as evidence since we're agreeing) and we can likely discern that the dog wasn't a non-aggressive dog by the fact that it killed a 7 year old child, something an aggressive dog would do. Hope this clears it up for you.
@@erinb4237 , no one in my family that was bitten by a dog was going out of their way to interact with a dog, we were all attacked at different times when walking down the street getting out of a car in a parking lot at a park, etc. Just going about life typically a German Shepard (not the same dog in any of these instances) charges up without barking to put holes in you. Dogs will go out of their way to attack non handling humans.
Dogs are connected to pack fatalities in many developing nations as well, commonly killing older people after dark, gold old wild stray dogs. But sometimes attacking people in cities in the day light leading to fatalities.
Dogs, Buffalo, Moose, things all more dangerous to most of us than really any reptile, let alone natural predators with some mush around bears.
You know what, it would be really cool if you did enclosure setup videos for common pet reptiles and amphibians for example, desert animals, arboreal ones, tropical ones, semi-aquatic ones
We've got one for tropical animals already. We will when we get a little time. Those videos take a lot of time and money. Plan on it though. Thank you for the excellent suggestion.
@@ClintsReptiles you should do a video on a yellowfoot tortoise
Thanos actually made some valid points agree
@@ClintsReptiles availability should be 1.0 as it is VERY difficult to find everywhere even in South East Asia where it is originally from, as they will claim that it is NOT it's season yet (for the past decade and longer)!
Thank you for the Shout out! Ill be having a video on my channel this weekend to update everyone on Doku the Mangrove Snake.
I look forward to it! We have a link to one of your awesome videos in our description as well. You have beautiful animals!
@@ClintsReptiles I see that! thank you!
I love your reviews on reptiles that SHOULDNT be pets. They’re funny, and also really helpful for people picking a reptile
I was wondering why this species had such a low rating, but I got my answer after just 10 seconds when he said it was venomous
Very MILDLY venomous
@@davidvaughn9 Ehhh. Mildly, maybe, but not very mild. That's what you would probably explain a Hoggie as. But these guys can make you nauseous for a week, as he mentioned. Or at least cause swelling for a week
@@cogsandglimmers The thing is, a hognose isn't particularly likely to bite you unless you're really asking for it. Even when they strike, a lot of the times they don't bite. Depends on the snake, of course. But even if you do get bit, it's not likely to cause much harm. The mangrove snake, however, is a step up.
It's like the difference between new world tarantulas and old world tarantulas.
I have one, they’re pretty rewarding despite their mild venom.
I've got one that has never struck at me or anyone else and I constantly free handle it. Yes there may be some that are very feisty but they are no different than humans in that there can be a bad apple but that's why these are not for beginners and are more for intermediate/experienced owners. Hope this helps
I literally shouted when I saw you did mangroves, even if it was a low rating. I don't think I will ever own hots but I have definitely considered mangroves regardless of them being "warm" at best
I saw a lovely enclosure for a nice sized Mangrove snake that had a 50 gallon aquarium at it's base with a 4' foot tall terrarium fixed above that. The enclosure had bifold doors for ease of access for maintenance. Lots of vines and branches for the snake with a place for a swim below that. He had a few archer fish in the tank.
Beautiful setup.
You have no idea how happy this video makes me. I love mangrove snakes. Feisty personalities with gorgeous colors. I want one!
They are incredible snakes.
Clint the videos you’ve been pushing out lately have been phenomenal! You remain the undefeated reptile educator 😎😎😎
Thank you so much! Little by little I think we're getting better.
Clint's Reptiles I imagine it’s hard to improve when you’re already the best !
I would say defensive more than aggressive. Just in thier case the best defense is a good offence.
How about grumpy?
@@ClintsReptiles I think that is fair, although you would be grumpy too if you were convinced everyone was trying to eat you.
I almost bought one on an impulse buy. I work with venomous snakes in the wild, there mild venom isn't what intimidated me. The care needed for one of these guys is what intimidated me. Although I work with reptiles in the wild I'm still learning the care for keeping snakes so I think I'll wait until I have the time and resources to properly care for one of these beautiful guys. And the space
I would love to see a video on false water cobras now that you mentioned the one I think you got from snake discovery
Already made one
Several years ago, when sharing an apartment with my brother, he came home with a mangrove snake one day. He had it set up in a decent enclosure on one side of the room, opposite from where I had a cage holding my beloved Florida King. After about a month of us sharing the place with each other and the two snakes, we awoke one morning to find my kingsnake had escaped in the night, crossed the room, gotten into the mangrove's enclosure and eaten it. Needless to say my brother wasn't too happy.
Scuffed 😂
Short answer no there venomous and not meant for kids and should only be owned by people who know how to handle and care for them
Yeah, definitely wasn't in contention for our list of best pet reptiles for kids...
They're* Yes it matters.
OspreyBravo18 not really, in RUclips, but I’m reality, yes
OspreyBravo18 It really is scary how many people don’t know the difference.
Honestly this kind of snake starts to border on something no-one but zoos should have.
Thank you for this video, Clint!! I was one of the ppl requesting this video. I never even considered getting a mangrove for myself (for the reasons covered by you also ^^ ), but it has been my favorite looking snake ever. Always upmost quality reptile content on youtube! Wish you and the team all the best!!
I know the title of this video is quite serious, but I couldn't prevent myself from chuckling when I read it.
Here at Clint's Reptiles we're always serious...
Got my boiga yesterday. CB. Came with a RI :( tuesday going to the vet. Let me tell you, it is MORE beautiful in person and in sunlight then you would think. Its amazing.
What a gorgeous snake...
Bro you should have the gold and silver play button
Great video Clint! I appreciate the honesty about this awesome snake!
I'm glad he did a video on this snake. This was one of my childhood favorite snakes (mostly because of the colors)
Glad to see your showing venomous snakes on here now!
It could open the door to some pretty exciting stuff.
Clint you and your team are awesome! I’m a big fan you all keep up the good work!
I recently got my first reptile, a leopard gecko. You're videos are so well done and informative! Thank you
I have one of these and it is the most beautiful snake I have ever owned. I handle mine in the daytime which is no problem as it nocturnal. I would not try it after dark. A large tub is great to keep them in. Mine is wild caught. I soaked it for two days, fed it live mice for the first two weeks and now it eats like a horse on frozen
rats / mice. It is full of bugs and I will take it to a vet once I have put some more ounces on it. One interesting fact is that in Europe they are not regarded as any more dangerous than a hognose.
I love the deer antler in the enclosure
Great video:) I keep and breed mangroves for 5 years now. Got my breeding pair as captive bread (different bloodlines). So far I didn't have any problems to get them eating. Its probably because they are captive bread and I get them small geckos at first and get them on rodents later. It's not a snake made for handling 😅 although I haven't been bitten yet.
I love your videos and keep up the good work.
Sounds like you're doing some awesome work. Thank you. Do you have a website for people seeking one?
I am interested in sharing that as well!
Well I'm from Germany and I sell (give them away sometimes) them locally. Sorry. But if you are from Europe I can reccomend terraristik.com
Need one in Ohio 🙋🏼♀️
Anyway I can contact you?
I was at an expo near me once and they had one of these. Absolutely beautiful snake, but I didn’t know anything about them. I don’t remember much from that expo, except for the mangrove snake. Left a lasting impression. Glad to see this video to educate me a little more on them, because I was always curious.
This is the Mr Rogers of RUclips! Enjoying your videos man! :)
I LOVE Boigas! Their beauty simply is astonishing!
Mangrove snakes are gorgeous. My zoo just redid their reptile house and the got a mangrove and it's my favorite to observe.
Super nice .really cool vid mr clint .im following u since day one
Fantastic as always Clint. I'd heard of the Mangrove snake before but I wouldn't have been able to tell you anything about it or even what it looked like. Stunning colouration, but with all the issues you mentioned, definitely just one for the advanced keeper.
I really wish you would do a video of your reptile enclosures/reptile room!!! Love the videos and you’re great!
Just in love with Mangrove snakes!
Favorite snake based on looks
That is totally reasonable.
I don't think I really recommended these. I want to cover the good and the bad so you can make an informed decision.
I live for these 2 and below videos
Good vid clintnas always of course keep up the good work
Thank you so much!
I got so excited when I remembered it was Wednesday and there would be a new Clint video when I got out of work 😁
Also, please keep doing what you do. It's wonderful.
I love mangrove snakes!!! I love that your doing a video on them!!!!😍👍
They're too amazing to ignore.
@@ClintsReptiles I know there not for beginners and I don't have one personally myself but I have always thought they were so beautiful and I have alot of respect and love for the animal in general not exactly as the best pet though just to clarify.
Everytime it shows it's face, I see the eyes and a quote comes to mind. "Black eyes like a doll's eyes."
Ulquiorra4163 Love that movie
It would be really cool if you made a video about daygeckos. You always have insight about reptiles that no other book/video has. You also have the brightest personality i have seen in a youtuber.
Thank you so much. Yes, we will cover them soon. Thank you for the kind feedback and the great suggestion.
Hey Clint I'm a relatively new subscriber and I want to thank you for the time you put into these videos they are incredible and I love your enthusiasm and love for reptiles do you maybe have a plan to do a video on fat tailed geckos? I used to own one when I was younger and I thought they seemed like good pets even for a begginer like myself
It looks gorgeous
Love these videos
Your so Brutally honest

Any chance you could do a video on green tree pythons? I know you did a brief one in the collab with snake discovery but an in depth one would be freaking rad! 🤙
Join morelia viridis fb forum great info and group
I love the mangrove snake! Please do a video on African bullfrogs and cane toads!
Maybe after I have a TON more experience these are such a beautiful snake. I saw one for the first time recently and fell in love. Hopefully someday XD
Not the snake for me but I love the black and yellow stripes on these guys! stinkin rad!
I want a refresh on this video now that they are more captive bread 3 years later lol my goodness they are the most beautiful
A strikingly beautiful snake! Not one I would keep, but a beauty nonetheless.
Awesome video as always, these were just featured on Chandlers Wildlife yesterday too.
Would love to see you do a video on rainbow boas. I have a baby rainbow and there isn’t a lot of videos on them.
It tried to bite Chandler. So yeah, grumpy
Gorgeous snake. It’s never a good sign when Clint won’t handle the animal.
I probably would have if I could stand up and pay attention to nothing but the snake. Trapped behind that desk trying to record an informative video, no way.
I handle mine. You can handle it but you need to watch their body language.
@@joshuamoss9056 how do you like keeping this animal?
@@menikmati-ku3ms feels like a dream to have but it came to me with issues. The survival rate of them with shipping is LOW. mine came with a upper sinus infection and mites. Shes on antibiotics right now. I have to give her a shot every 3 days. The medicine starts with a C ita safe for biogas. Super sensitive animals any other meds can kill her and for the mites. Cant use that mite shampoo stuff, it can also kill them so im just gonna bathe her in water for 30 minutes a day. I free handle her when i do spend time with her tho. Just use a hook for in the cage. Like any other animal, its THEIR home. Never reach in. Theyre supposed to feel safe. Also, she didnt eat for me last night but a lot of factors comes to play. Medicine or stress and such. I post her on my IG. pnw_reptiles503 if you wanna see her :) shes beautiful. Has a blueish green tint over her whole body. Its an amazing snake to own. Im no " experience " keeper but i know the right people to help me out and did research for 5 months. Research until you feel comfortable :) i would buy another boiga in the future. Maybe a LATI. her temper is chill but most boigas are chill and thats where people will get bit. Theyll get too comfortable and BAM. this is just my experience.
Wow you get this animal thriving its gonna be extremely rewarding , Goodluck , followed you on IG.
Cool Brother ,,,,, what a species ,,,, great vid ,,,
I've handled 2 wild mangrove snakes before, and all I can say is that both of them were calmer than my corn snake
Hey Clint long time follower here! It's great to see you so close to 100k!! Congrats! I was just wondering though if we could get a 'best display pet?' series? Some of these animals are amazing but there are some of us that love to set up beautifully scaped biotopes with automated rain systems/mist systems and live plants so we can enjoy them as a slice of nature in our home! Kind of like a beautiful fish tank. I'm trying to decide what to get as a centre piece animal in it's own scaped tank but I can't decide between dart frogs, tree frogs, day geckos and snakes like the GTP!
Great suggestion. I just added that video to my list this morning.
@@ClintsReptiles :O You replied!! Thank you so much for taking the suggestion! Hope you have a great day and can't wait to see you hit 100k subs very soon!!
When he said, “This tank is huge” I thought he meant the 5 or 10 gallon, and I was like, are you sure😂
Yes I'll been waiting on this one..
Ill continue to make more content about them too if you would like to subscribe.
You should do the Day gecko! Great video as always
Thank you. We will soon.
Thelotornis, and possibly Oxybelis are more venomous than Boiga species. I say possibly for Oxybelis because I've heard of deaths, but it could be issues from anaphylaxis.
Also, thank you for putting this out. I love seeing the venomous content.
Thank you for the info. I was confident that there had to be some in between, but I didn't know what they were. Always happy to learn.
I'm pretty sure that it's anaphylaxis, just like there are people who die to bee or wasp stings. Now I would also have a question as to which species is more likely to come in contact with humans and therefore increase the chances of a bite occuring. Some of the snakes with the highest body counts are indeed very toxic but they are also the ones that like to live close to humans (also the ability for local EMS to treat the bite).
Lots of factors, but the Boomslang still takes the Cake if we are talking toxicity in a rear fang snake.
I don't know about you guys, but it's snake season where I'm at! And in the spirit of things I'd love to see some episodes dedicated to some native species. Both as potential pets and some in the wild advice
I just ordered a baby Mississippi Green Water Snake. Good Video!
Another good video

When will you do an update on false water cobras? Ee are doing research on them after seeing yours and Emily's to possibly get one down the road in the future when we are better prepared knowledge wise and enclosure wise. Great video on this beauty though!
2 things. 1 can you do a full video on false water cobra? and do you go herping or do you just like keeping them as pets?
you mentioned boomslangs. Those things are scary as heck. I live in South-Africa and saw one in the wild once and it was looooooong.
I remember seeing these in national geographic magazine as a kid. Beautiful, but I'd never want to keep (or unexpectedly encounter) one.
Hey Clint, will you be doing one of these videos for walse water cobras at some point? I've loved learning about them but I appreciate your videos for not shying away from the negatives
I will for sure. Thank you so much for the awesome and encouraging feedback about our videos.
I love this
I’m so happy you did this
Thank you Clint
Btw I’m trying to get a ball python or a gray banded king
These guys and african vine snakes are my 2 favorite rear fanged colubrids.
Mere seconds before you said it the thought occurred to me that a jungle carpet python would be a better alternative. I looked into mangroves briefly before a jungle came available in my area. Since I already have a carpet python and love the species, I picked up the jungle too -- just last week, in fact. I posted a video on IG (@noz4nuziest) to show how well she handles. Thanks again, Clint, for the honest assessment of lesser know or kept reptiles.
"These guys...are awesome" *Clint looks at the snake wearily body not even touching the glass of the container*
Clint you should put a section on your website of care guides, might take some time but it was just a idea I thought of.
This is still one of my dream snakes!

Are mourning geckos even kept as pets? I've only ever seen them in research labs cuz of how they reproduce
@@khoalam4127 They are commonly kept in the hobbie although it's hard to get them outside of a expo or online the reason I asked is because I am friends with a breeder and debating getting a couple.
Hi Clint! After this video, I'm wondering is there a law that regulates keeping venoumous snakes in your state? And maybe do you know how this looks in other states? In which it's ok to keep venomous snakes, and in which it's illegal?
(Hopefully) Next time in clints reptiles. Gilamonster, the best pet lizard?
I would love that! Yes!
Cool animal, but terrible "pet" lizard.
At this rate, we'll end up with "sea krait, the best pet snake?"

My brothers getting a False water cobra,Me and friend and my brother are all saving up money. Im super excited to get it by next summer
Nice. Contact Kyle Wilson. Tell him I sent you.
Clint's Reptiles I found his care sheet for falsies, but does he breed babies as well?
Rear fanged, I knew it. The mangrove snake just has that "rear fang" look.
Can you make a video on crowned leafnose snakes please? I saw one at an expo for pretty cheap and I was wondering why there are not many videos on them.
What an interesting video, didn't think you'd ever present more venomous snakes. I am not interested in keeping one. But certainly an interesting video.
Hopefully with time our library will include almost everything.
I'm looking at getting into keeping venomous animals, what venomous reptile (preferably snake) would you recommend for a beginner?
Definitely gonna get a mangrove snake. Not now but eventually
I was bit my one. It was just a little itch and that was it. And it was a bite or 3 afther each other.. On the other hand I also have handles good behaved mangroves.
If you're looking for a non-venomous alternative to these guys I'd check out the desert kingsnake. A similar coloration in the form of a kingsnake.
can you please do a video on the Lined Day gecko. i wanna get one but there’s not much out there about them
Is there anyway you can make a care video on macklots pythons? I’ve been looking around RUclips and I can’t seem to find s good care video on them and think they’re one of the coolest looking reptiles
i heard that captive bred mangroves are one of the best "starter" venomous snakes. i have always been interested in cat snakes my entire life and my favorite cat snake species are the Malaysian Mangroves.
Had one of these when i was in high school. It wasn't aggressive at all, it was very docile; had burmese pythons that were more aggressive.
It would only eat finches and as i found out the hard way other snakes.
Having been bitten due to mistaken identity -totally my fault, my symptoms were nausea and dry heaaving. The next day my finger swelled up not unlike a bee sting.
It’s cool👍
