- It's no secret that feminism has invaded every aspect of entertainment industry, from the executive branch to the actors and writers. But Star Wars has maybe the worst form of feminism. From using Star Wars as a medium to denounce creativity, heroism, responsibility and morality, all in the name of representation, diversity and feminism, I just have to ask...can we stop please?
I'm so tired of seeing basically the same female character in every new show, the same toxic feminism in each and every girl boss that I am being force fed.

There's nothing more ironic about modern entertainment than the fact the supposedly misogynistic men of old Hollywood make infinitely better female characters than feminist women.

Kathleen Kennedy and all who sail with her are consumed with spite. That's the dominant emotion behind all of the projects. Hatred of men. Hatred of the original fanbase. A desire to censure the male imagination. These are very sick people. The fact that it gets worse over time makes me think they are doing it on purpose. It's like they receive the criticism of the male fans as confirmation that they are doing it right and then they lean even harder into those very things they are criticized for. They have enough money to hire the best writers, the best actors, and best directors but they don't want to. They are trying to destroy it, not elevate it.
It makes me wonder where the money is going, like is this just an excuse to pay themselves? Did it all go to craft services or something 😆

To be fair, Harrison Ford didn't wan tot come back so they had to show that she was the new heir to the Millenium Falcon

Only the best storytellers can make a story universal for all mankind. Just look at Godzilla Minus One. It has a character that is so relatable for many people, even though his environment and situation are not something most people have experienced. In contrast, Disney’s Star Wars has characters that lack universal relatability and nuance.
Honestly Godzilla Minus One deserves more love.

I am currently reading the Han Solo trilogy from the EU and it's written by a woman named Crispin and it's amazing. Thank goodness it came out when it did in the 90s because back then, none of this toxic feminism was prominent

I don't think of the OT as a power fantasy. More like a coming of age adventure. Luke has his moments, but he's not explicitly meant to be a badass or anything. I think something like He-Man fits the bill a lot better.

Rey could have been an interesting character. Same with Finn. But someone panicked about halfway through the Force Awakens. It's as if the writers wanted to write a good Star Wars film, but then remembered at the last minute that it was meant to be a vehicle for activism.
More likely, it was KK realizing that Finn might detract from her message... her goal.
She's nothing, if not consistent.
As the saying goes, "three times is a pattern"... and we are FAR past a mere 3 times.
It is no surprise that movie makers today want to eliminate heroism, sacrifice, morality, and overcoming obstacles in their trash productions. This is the “bold, brave, stunning new direction” Hollywood is pursuing, based on collective efforts, collective heroism. Women collectively are heroic and men collectively are schmucks. This is their world view. This is the direction they want for all humanity. And they make movies and tv shows that reflect that view, wishing the next generation to adopt these precepts. That’s why money no longer matters. There is always more funding. Their POLITICS are paramount and their works serve their politics, overriding any fiduciary considerations. As long as crooked creditors demand and fund this garbage, it will continue, no matter how much is lost, no matter how many lives they damage.
When I was a kid, society told itself stories... stories with morals (lessons)... often called fables.
Stories like The Grasshopper and the Ants. One might reasonably say its moral was "do your chores".
Those stories, and their lessons, became part of us... a part of who we were/are.
Today, the stories Hollywood tells us are all about power... oppression... h8red. One might also call them "Women's Studies 101 for the masses".
(What effect is this going to have on society in 10-20 years? Nothing good... and a great deal which is going to be b4d.)
More than that, they are deliberately injecting their m!s4ndry into things typically intended FOR men and boys.
In a way, they are crawling into your "basements", through your internet connection, to f0rc3 f33d "The Message" to you, taking away your retreat from them.

Andor is the only Disney Star Wars show with great female characters, and ironically all of its writers were men.
Man was Andor amazing. Watched in one go. Andor was so real and troubled and motivated.
The portrayal of Imperial security in Andor was pure gold, a demonstration of how evil bureaucracies (is that an redundant phrase?) function.

Andor is gold, period. That being said, most of Disney Star Wars has been written by men.
The Lord Incel plotline was dispicable but then what happened in the last episode... I'm not sure where they are going with it. They can't reward his obsessive, stalker behavior... can they? That would be truly bold.
Men aren't allowed to be knights anymore.... This is why I've been watching more Anime. Just started Ranking of Kings and I love the Queen Step Mother on that show. She is a fireball of passion and love. Leave it to the Japanese to know how to write compelling characters and understand there are a million ways to show strong females without bringing down others.
Pretty much every country outside of the USA is doing much better work in storytelling
Wanna make feministic movies. Fine. Do. But create your new own stories. Dont ruin established frenchises and stories.

There's a movie called Mrs. Caldicot's Cabbage War about a woman who's tricked into living in a horrible care home.
She sticks up for herself and others, treats people who deserve it with respect, doesn't consider herself better than other people, and fights for the rights of herself and the other care home residents.
It's not some huge movie, but it's an amazing feminist movie with an amazing feminist character.
That's one thing that they want to do...
BUT... they REALLY want the money from the male audience.
A lot of women ALSO do NOT want to see their agenda-laden stuff.
That makes these people really bitter... and spiteful.
They also know that most of this stuff is doing badly... even very badly... which makes them even more bitter... and makes that "chip" bigger, too.
And THAT is a big part of the reason that they just can't resist subverting these existing franchises.
Now, it's all about their envy, spite, and anger... and they have the power... and so, they have become the Sith.

You know what's really sad? Star Wars was already naturally progressive including in terms of being feminist. It's not for nothing that Princess Leia is an icon and I have to say this as a fan of the series; it's not about how many female characters there are. It's about the quality of those characters. I mean, is every male character in a show memorable?
Great video! This is literally the problem killing Star Wars (and most entertainment these days). They are making female characters boring and soulless in an awful attempt to make them the “best”, and tearing down all the males characters so they don’t dare steal any spotlight or achievement, which makes the male characters insufferable too. If all the characters are terrible, how can the story be any good? Who is this stuff for?

There was a time you couldn't keep me away from STAR WARS. Now like so many others, when I hear about a new SW project, I react the same as when I hear something about my X girlfriend: "I just don't care anymore." 🤔
It's pushed me to the point that I actively avoid any and all stories with female leads. I dont want to read about them and watch tem anymore. It's a shame because logically I know they "can" be good. But I just don't care anymore. When it comes to my own stories I'm not gonna write female characters ever again. There will be no trace of anything that could remotely be considered f*minist in my works. I'm just done with this crap.

I hear ya John. I always liked the Sarah Connors or Ripley’s of the film world. A person put into incredibly impossible odds, knowing full well they may die and they end up doing something extraordinary but not without a lot of hardship and loss. Those women characters were always something to be proud of, nowadays it’s just not the same. I feel you man.

SyFy cancelled my favorite shows... which included "Farscape"... so I quit watching SyFy, too.

All of this feminist SW nonsense has been the big budget reflection of Kathleen Kennedy staring at herself in a mirror, repeating “I’m not just a coffee girl, I’m powerful!”
They want to get rid of the idea of morality because a lot of the messages that they're trying to push are perceived to be on the bad side of traditional morality. I mean seriously taking the acolyte for example. After episode 7, almost everyone agrees that the Jedi didn't do anything wrong to those witches. They're trying to make the Jedi look evil but the writers have failed in this endeavor miserably.
In regards to the power fantasy, to be fair there are plenty of movies where male characters have been perceived as Mary Sue characters. However the difference is, everybody do that these characters were only for entertainment purposes. It's like the showrunners of the Star Wars IP are trying to make their characters portray what women should be and it's just not palatable. Not to say that women can't be strong or cannot be leaders or whatnot but those characters still need to struggle just as much as their male counterparts
If you aren't hired based on talent, you are, by definition, not the best person for the job.

Andor seems to be the lone exception to this rule, at least within LucasFilm. I too wanted to love the Obi Wan series, in the end the only good point was the final fight, the rest ...unbelievable. It's frustrating when influential corporations like Disney prioritize appearances over competence in their diversity and inclusion efforts. Representation should reflect both diversity and skill. When companies fail to do so, it undermines the efforts of those who have worked hard to excel despite facing obstacles related to their identity. Companies should foster environments where meritocracy is upheld and individuals are recognized based on their talents and achievements, not just their demographic characteristics.
DEI is actually for white people. The corporations calculated that the future is gonna have whites become the minority so since whites NEVER show weakness, they are linking Diversity with gender and race. I know this because I live in South Africa where whites cannot find jobs in entertainment because the demand is for African languages and African people. Hence why Charlize Theron and other white celebrities move to USA or Canada or UK to find jobs. Think about it, since when did whites do ANYTHIGN for black and brown people if it wasn't to exploit them? So I am for removing DEI for the sake of Africans creating and owning their own Networks
These female characters are no role models for young girls, as they don't show how girls can be heroic, moral, brave, smart, resilient, humble, hardworking and compassionate. As a woman, I myself can't often find any female 'role models' that embody these kinds of virtues, and feel surrounded by only toxic women in the media.

The first warning sign of what was to come to me at least was Doctor Who 2015's Hell Bent a little before TLJ, and after seeing TLJ I was like "Oh God, it's Hell Bent all over again".

Notice how all this modern activism is mostly coming from "Entertainemnt industry" actors entertainers and "influencers" are now the emissary of humanity. Its the fall of intelligence that our idols of inspiration and influence have shifted from scholars and experts to entertainers. Please do a critique of the new "Time Bandits" coming out on AppleTV! Terry Gilliam walked off the set of the remake of his classic in utter disgust! Lol. Taika Waititi is despoiling yet another '80s pop-cultural touchstone after destroying Hulk, Thor, Valkyrie and Zeus at Marvel! The original had Sean Connery as Agamemon, John Cleese as Robin Hood, Ian Holm as Napoleon and David Warner as the Devil. The climax was a gathering of warriors from across time to battle ultimate evil! The little people Bandits are no more! They weren't PC! Lisa Kudrow of "Friends" is the back-flipping girl-boss of the ethnically diverse pilferers. Gone is the eerie, dreamlike atmosphere replaced by endless snark and Waititi's brand of zany, everything-is-ridiculous hilarity! The man is a wolf in nerd clothing who has nothing but contempt for nerd culture and everything they hold dear! Please deconstruct the trailer for us!
He actually did more for Hulk than any other director at Marvel has done as for Thor that is primarily because of Chris Hemsworth and not Taiki. I can’t argue about the others.

It feels as if they give zero F*cks about respecting this widely beloved story that they have been given the opportunity to be in charge of? They don't comprehend how much they don't understand Star Wars. So much so that IT HURTS! (They also don't understand anything about quality storytelling/ character building & world building as a whole) Yet these people act like They deserve these positions? Random Honest question: When it comes to the Acolyte, What is so SPECIAL about Osha and Mea for them to be the Main focus, the Main characters, etc. She has ZERO personality, 0 depth, 0 intricate aspects to her character.. Yet we are supposed to believe All off this is occurring around the twins as the main focus...? She has the personality of a cardboard box. There's so many things that are very wrong with this sad attempt at telling a star wars story.. There's so many issues with this story tho.. None of what they have made actually portraits accurate star wars, accurate jedi, etc. etc. How did this cost $180 million..? It seriously does not make any sense
This show comes off so cheap & tacky.. It's not just the terrible writing & terrible acting. It's horrible set design, horrible world building, horrible camera work. It all makes this show feel so small. Like it's filmed in a single green screen room.. Grasping at awful CGI techniques to try and force any bit of a false reality into this mess of a show.
It's so far from Legitimate Star wars movies that it feels as if this whole thing is a big parody.. A very expensive parody..
When I was growing up, Feminism meant "Women's Lib". Now it means "Female Empowerment". The change is important because a woman who is liberated is free to make the most of herself. But a women who has power has to exercise that power over other people. So female characters have to be girl bosses and male characters have to be lame and/or stupid.

But I read 1984 by George Orwell when I was in high school. Having power means being able to force someone else say that two plus two equals five. People take power over other people for the purpose of having power over other people. The end state of such a system is boot endlessly stomping on a human face. I like having characters of both genders being equally important and not one being treated overpowered and is better at everything while the other is treated weak and stupid and useless, that doesn’t help in any favors
People didn't have a problem with Rei because she was female. People had a problem with the fact that she was better than every male at everything, whether it made any sense or not.

People old enough to remember know that feminism appeared in the first film as even women were not impressed with Leia's abrasive attitude towards Luke and Han. Meanwhile obi wan and Yoda were manipulators. Bending truth to win a battle only Skywalker could fight. However the biggest problem SW faces is that greed didn't allow the franchise to end in 83 as ot should have
The initial stript for Obi-Wan Kenobi had him protect a young Luke Skywalker, but Kathleen Kennedy forced (pin intended) them to rewrite the script to be about young Leia instead.
It's quite concerning because kids do watch this stuff, and what is the message? Bravery, stoicism, self sacrifice, standing up for what's right? No the message is that *anything* a woman chooses to do is by definition "empowering", because she is a woman choosing to do it. But this isn't what a hero does this is what a sociopath does. What the hell kind of moral lesson is this?
I really don't think this is even about storytelling for the benefit of the audience anymore. It seems more about the filmmaking and how that allows those with an axe to grind to 'have a go' because of the status & power it affords them, which gives them the platform to grind their axe. Basically, selfish entitled narcissistic types who feel they deserve the job because they're superior. It's not about the quality of the work & the positive impact that has on others, it's just about them being the ones to do the work because that's fair (for them). It appeases their ego. It's the product of emotional immaturity.
From what I know, there are many different branches of feminism, just like there are different types of communism, capitalism, etc.
It's like when someone says "Do you believe in God?" you can't just answer yes or no because God is a complex subject. Do you mean the Christian God? Do you mean a higher power?
I dated a girl who hated men and thought women were gods. She gave feminism a bad name. As a man, I have no problem with women even having power over men. But this girl I dated made all the good feminists look horrible, the same way Brie Larsen turns DEI and feminism and trans rights into a joke, all for her ego. Hollywood used to be the place where introspection was analyzed and debated from one film to the next. Now they can’t even open their eyes for the fear of seeing what the world is like outside their own viewpoint. I guess this really is it. For the name of the final episode of Star Trek put it best; “All good things…”. StarWars did that with Return of the Jedi. After that movie, it was no more.

I grew up respecting women and supporting their rights and equality, but in the last decade I've never been attacked more in my life for being a man and being labeled a bigot, misogynist and even a predator for liking women. Voicing my opinions which are about equality and sharing responsibilities seem to fall on def ears because it's so much easier to play the victim narrative than to do actual work to make advancements in civilization. As for Hollywood, we are well into the Karenistic Period with no light at the end of the tunnel, and thanks to the Woketard Generation, we must celebrate mediocrity or face cancellation...
This was the main thing that finally killed Captain Marvel for me when I saw it; she entered into her full potential just because she decided to, not because she trained, or worked, or changed at all - the flashbacks of childhood showed she always had the will to stand back up, so that wasn't even a real story beat.

This is why I, and many others, are now watching anime and reading manga more. They do strong female characters much better. Appare Ranman is an anime I am currently watching and it's great. It's basically Wacky Races meets Blood meridian. One character, a girl named Xialin, aspires to be a female racer but faces sexism and is inexperienced with fixing cars, though she can drive well. In a contest against some jerk, she loses due to him cheating and then her boss who owns a race team condemns the cheater and acknowledges her skill and offers to help her fix up her car and she gratefully accepts. That feminism done right! Real empowering and no toxicity.
DEI is actually for white people. The corporations calculated that the future is gonna have whites become the minority so since whites NEVER show weakness, they are linking Diversity with gender and race. I know this because I live in South Africa where whites cannot find jobs in entertainment because the demand is for African languages and African people. Hence why Charlize Theron and other white celebrities move to USA or Canada or UK to find jobs. Think about it, since when did whites do ANYTHIGN for black and brown people if it wasn't to exploit them? So I am for removing DEI for the sake of Africans creating and owning their own Networks
If you ever get bored and want to revisit this essay, it would be worthy to do it with the conclusion here as the lead off in the new version. Instead of summing up with how power has been shown historically to corrupt and good stories warned of this corruption, use that as your opener and catalyst. It's a great summary, but how much more effective (powerful??????) would it be to open with exactly what you closed with - The Lord of the Rings screaming how bad embracing power for the sake of power is. Just a thought.
I was actually optimistic after watching Force Awakens. I just assumed that Rey received training from Luke when she was a child and that Luke or someone put a mind block on her to hide her identity. And when Luke finally sees her and his eyes tear up, I speculated either she's his daughter or a daughter to a close friend who was also force sensitive. But after TLJ, I was really confused. I gave the film the benfit of the doubt because I was more like "Do I just not understand this movie?" But as the years went by, I now know that Disney is just incompetent.
By writing bad female characters, the so called "femenists" at Disney ironically have created really bad female characters that don't hold a light to the previous male heroes of the franchise. If male characters with no growth are considered poorly written characters, then the same applies to why female characters with no growth are also considered to be poorly written characters.
I used to think the problem was men writing overpowered women either as a fantasy or to win favor. Where maybe you could think about it as wanting Ripley or Sarah Connor, but not wanting the work to get to the memorable finished product. To be that explained Joss Whedon and the intent in womening up Terminator. But I think the current thing is different. There are more women involved in the overpowered women, and it does seem to have either a political obsession or deep inferiority complex. That seems to be the core difference between being in the narrative as an equal and needing to redefine the story to undercut men and make women the real movers and shakers. With the Mandalorian, I defended Bo Katan on a basis of I shouldn't have a problem with a model of sharing power as equals and cooperating. Bo and Mando and Grogu almost looked like an approximation of a family. It at least seemed comparatively genial in intent. That was my defense of Wonderwoman. It had a comparatively female gaze (ok), but it allowed the broken male characters to be flawed and independently heroic.
I'd additionally note that male fantasies aren't necessarily the top dog. A lot of dudes in the comic space liked Wolverine or daredevil. My understanding is that Rocky wasn't top dog in the first rocky film. If narratives were part of male empowerment, it's worth noting that many of these were about striving - not automatically being all-powerful. And I'm sure empowered male characters had moral/emotional lessons to learn.
Not everything has to be a power fantasy. LOTR was about a little guy under four feet high with hairy feet throwing away the ultimate power to save the places and people he loved.
SW was taken over by writers who actually HATE everything that was good about SW- the main characters.

Male characters' fatal flaw is possessing one extra chromosome (the Y of course). Once a character is free of a Y chromosome, perfection is instantaneous and complete.
I stopped watching anything Star Wars after The Force Awakens ended and wrecked the legacy characters. Disney, Star Wars elevates villains into protagonists and replaces heroes with villains. There is nothing about Star Wars worth watching.
I still find it absolutely astonishing that Star Wars fans who have never met or spoken with one another can reach very similar opinions on what's destroyed Star Wars in just under a decade. I actually said to myself several times while watching this "OMG, I thought I was the only one who felt this way?!"
The fan's disappointment in Disney Star Wars has never had anything to do with hate or isms. I've talked to many of them, and every single one of them has the same answer to why DSW isn't fun: The stories are ridiculous. The characters don't fit into their own narrative. I have never met a Star Wars fan who didn't like Daisy Ridley. Each one claims she did the best with what she had. I have failed to find a single Star Wars fan who's motivated by hate or fear. It's a damn shame this how Star Wars ends.

I totally agree with you. I would add that those feminists writers are afraid to portray female vulnerability. They perceive it as weak. They think that being powerful is being a masculine woman with no flaws that people can attack. The problem is that you create a boring character when you do so. There is no journey, we are already at the destination from the beginning so why should we invest in this character. Ripley is a badass character but she is still flawed, feminine and human. She can be brave and make mistakes but we still love her and follow her journey

I disagree he knew there was Luke who offered hope. Not to mention him facing Vader opens so many plot holes and this the show that started the infamous trend of lightsaber stabs to the chest being just a flesh wound.

As woman i can't relate to any of this. It's like some twilight zone world leaking into the real world where everyone I know and meet (offline) hates these shows and movies and laughs at them. Even my dentist hated acolyte.

Devil’s advocate here: a new hope Leia. She was kidnapped , tortured and forced to watch as her whole planet exploded. Obi-Wan died. Why the hell would she have any feeling at that point left especially for a person she spent 2 days with 14 years ago?
But no Leia should not have been Kenobi’s sidekick in that show, or was it the other way around?

I have always preferred having Star Wars characters of both genders being equally important to the story and not favor one being overpowered and better at everything while the other is made to look weak, stupid and useless and not just for Star Wars but for all franchises in Disney and other franchises outside of Disney, they need to fix that immediately so Star Wars and Disney can be good like before, cause children and families don’t go to Star Wars and Disney for the message they go to them for the fun and entertainment, even women can find it fun and entertaining too if they write the story and characters the right way and all this is what they really need to do

It’s just a shame that these can all be good characters but the idea of promotion is more important than the story and characters themselves. It’s nuts that while acolyte is coming out we are getting HOTD and those characters which are female leads are imo great.

I agree with your video in general, but I gotta take issue with the treatment of Obi-Wan in his eponymous show. At the beginning of the series we are seeing him shortly after the Jedi, of whose ruling council he was a member with the rank of master, were almost completely wiped out very quickly and with little warning. Worse, many of the Jedi were murdered by his own former padawan and friend, whom Obi-Wan had failed to adequately train to resist the Dark Side. Obi-Wan’s entire world has been completely destroyed. He knows Darth Vader and the Inquisitorius are hunting down the few remaining Jedi. And to add insult to injury, Owen Lars has turned hostile to Obi-Wan and wants Luke to have nothing to do with Obi-Wan. You don’t think Obi-Wan’s self confidence would have taken a massive beating? You don’t think he would be questioning everything he had ever done with the Jedi? You don’t think he’d be trying to lay low? It is entirely natural for Obi-Wan to start the series depressed, mourning, hiding, and blaming himself. It also gives a starting point for character development.
However badly the character of Leia was handled - and she was - she was merely the story vehicle to get Obi-Wan off world to face Vader. The only character who was really shoe-horned in was Reva, yet her purpose may have been more than just a feminist redemption fantasy but also an excuse for the fans to root for Vader and for Vader to show his power in his duel against her. Moses Ingram’s acting was adequate for that role. Certainly better than any of the women in The Acolyte, though in the cases of Amandla Stenberg and Rebecca Henderson, that isn’t saying much.
Anyway, that’s my only gripe. Otherwise, spot on. And good job.
