  • My 2020 Winnebago Travato GL came equiped with a Coleman Mach 10 NDQ A/C which is VERY LOUD... research indicated that a Houghton 3400 A/C & Heat Pump unit with same BTU was much quieter... so I bought one and installed it.... it is MUCH quieter!
    updated November 11th; we've used this a couple of trips, the Heat Pump mode is awesome; will warm up the coach in just a few minutes when we get up in the morning.

    Great video, covered everything I was looking for and it didn't drag. It was a quick 8 minutes! Thank you

    Was hoping there was a sound comparison when I clicked, and there was! Wow, that is quite the difference. Thank you for making this video.

    Thanks. Loved how you were able to remove and then pull up both AC units. And no injuries reported!

    I just installed a RecPro 2801 ( 9500BTU, $1100 ) on a 2012 Keystone Springdale 179. My roof is 5" thick, so I needed the thick roof kit, which worked fine. It's little tricky to change the duct to the longer one, make sure you screw it out in the correct direction, which was clockwise for me. Otherwise, you end up tightening it and it's very difficult to remove. Putting the new one on is a little tricky, but after a few tries I got it. My old AC was a Dometic Brisk II. This new one is dramatically quieter. However, I hoped to run it off a single Yamaha EF2000is ( 1st generation), and it did not work. Later I took the cover off and found out the "locked rotor amps" is 52A! So, there is no soft starting in this thing. At least it’s less than the 62A of the Brisk Air. Looks like mounting a SoftStartRV will be tricky, I might do it. Have to mount it under the outside air fan. I suspect they say "does not need a soft start" because it does not have a loud "thump" when the compressor starts. A soft start can fix that with any AC. The reason this one does not thump is the excellent mounting of the compressor on springs that isolates it from transmitting compressor sound to the RV. When I saw that SoftStartRV has a wiring diagram for this unit, I knew it must need a soft start. I was able to measure the inrush current with a special meter, and it showed 48A, close to the 52A on the label. So far, the highest running current I have measured is 6A, but others have reported 9A. Unfortunately we have had a very cool summer so far, so I have not had a chance to see how well it cools our small 18' trailer. But, the prior 13500BTU unit was clearly far larger than needed, so I am confident this will work fine.

    Your comment on Winnebago quality, I don't think it's limited to just Winnebago. There seems to be a real quality control problem for all of the brands built in Elkhart, Indiana. When my Jayco was built no one bothered to go through with a shop-vac to remove metal shavings from the various normally-inaccessible compartments like around the water, power, and heater when the various holes were drilled for the penetrations, and likewise I've found numerous screws that were bolted into basically nothing, just the thin interior wall skins.
    I suspect that the problem is endemic to the workforce there and that workers change from company to company depending on who's got work. Think of the situation where all of the American automakers' quality fell in the 1970s, didn't matter if GM, Chrysler, or Ford, they were all on the decline and there simply was no effective quality control.
    It costs money to hire staff dedicated to quality checking on the manufacturing floor, especially if one is to keep those staff instead of them floating from manufacturer to manufacturer. They aren't willing to spend that money even for their supposedly higher end products, let alone the entry-level products like my travel trailer.

    Hi Rene. Thanks for sharing this informative video! I need to replace my OEM supplied Coleman-Mach 8 for my 2015G Travato. Are you happy with the performance of the Houghton? I have read that it might not be as powerful as the Coleman Mach and that it may not reduce humidity as well. I live in Florida and high humidity is frequent. We look forward to getting a quieter unit so I appreciate the decibel readings. Did you keep the Haughton?

    Well, we finally had a Houghton 3400 professionally installed, but I have to say, it is one poor excuse for an air conditioner. A tiny bit of cool air expels from the vents, but it in no way cools the interior, not even close. We have run countless experiments which included operating the unit in total shade. Also, the dehumidification (dry) function does not reduce humidity whatsoever. Wish our noisy Mach 10 never died. I have to admit, the Houghton is very quiet during its pitiful operation.

      I hope you got this resolved! Sounds like the unit is bad. If it's not putting out 20 degrees below ambient temp (outside temp is 100, unit should put out 80 or lower). Definitely reach out for warranty support.

    I just bought a used 2019 Travato GL and can’t stand the noisy AC. You created a great video that is making me want to replace it. Did you consider any other Houghton model? Thank you for creating this video!

    Did the new A/C come with the new gasket? Or should I buy something like this? Camco 25071 14" x 14" Universal Roof Air Conditioner Gasket Kit

    • @reneadventures
      @reneadventures  2 года назад

      It did not require a gasket; per the installation instructions, you seal the plenum onto the roof deck - I used Manus bond. Here's link to the manual: www.recpro.com/content/RP-AC3400%20Low%20Profile%20Air%20Conditioner.pdf
