@@justsomebird4285 Problem with most Fire Emblem fighters is they space you out so much with their range and don't have enough landing or end lag on their attacks for you to viably counter them except with some of the fastest grabs or dashes in the game
Taylor Greniger Yeah I can understand how some sword characters may be a particular issue for slower characters. You can of course use any projectiles you have early to get a lead and make them want to approach, but that depends on if your characters projectile is suitable for that or if your character even has a projectile. Typically when I deal with any sort of move that I know has very little end lag, I tend to move into a distance that would make it seem like I’m trying to punish them. As an example I’ll use Meta Knight’s Fsmash. If a Meta Knight uses Fsmash I’ll run in and just shield, then if they attempt to stop my feigned punish I’ll block the attack or spotdodge, especially if they try to grab instead of using another random attack. This way I know they are using Fsmash and it’s super low end lag as a bait for them to attack me before I can punish them. If they jump away or do any sort of other evasive option like Roll or spotdodge I’ll know they were trying to hit me with it, but habitually avoid anything I might throw at them after seeing that it didn’t land, and if the shield I know they might want to defend against the attack I would’ve used had I chosen not to just gather info on their reaction. If I can’t punish the move itself, I’ll punish it bait out the option that I know they will use after that move without properly thinking; you kind of have to force yourself to think a couple steps ahead or else there’s not much else you can do. So if they shield by habit, I’ll grab, roll/jump/spotdodge or any particular evasive move of theirs, I’ll hit them as they attempt to escape by reading it. If they try to retaliate I’ll consider what the most common move they would retaliate with is and apply counterplay to it, so like Spotdodge it, shield it, or jump over it or Dash dance away and back in, etc. to get my punish. Sorry for the long explanation I’m not very good at keeping stuff like this short and sweet

@@danielcoria3172 it does but it comes out way too slow if he fast hits it and you don't react frame perfect. Also he can just swallow it again and spit it back. Really annoying matchup.
@@solstice871 how should i hit them back? The only way to knock them back is with side b or neutral b but both of those are incredibly slow and hard to time correctly because of the bounce and varying speed. I don't think you can side air it back either cause your body is a hit box during that.
As a Bowser main, I've had some success with running up and buffering a completely horizontal airdodge towards the enemy with the Z button. It allows you to quickly pass through projectiles without turning your back to the enemy, and it doesn't feel like it has more endlag than a regular roll. You can even dodge tether grabs using this technique.
The Belmont part is helpful for each projectile but it doesn't help with how to deal with everything in conjunction along with his grabs and normal attacks as well as getting ledge trapped. Also people who camp under platforms and spam projectiles like young Links online. Disclaimer: I could just be terrible at this game.
I play Toon Link, I'm usually mixing it up 50/50 with melee and range depending on the situation, but it doesn't stop people from falling of the ledge in frustration using up their last stocks and ending the match
A good samus is way more difficult to deal with than Simon imo. I dont get why others think Simon is in high tier when samus has good range options as well as close range. I do love how by holding neutral A with simon you can swing around your whip to nullify projectiles like in Super Castlevania II.
I do have a harder time with Samsung compared to Simon. (Although it's a real pain when the online connection is sh*t, then I can't punish as good as I could if it wasn't.)

In traditional fighting games, you can walk and then block and there is no shield break. That's why in smash it can be particularly annoying as more projectiles and a diminishing shield.
Although this is mainly an examination or options, I feel like it is extremely useful for newer and/or inexperienced players that may have a problem finding a way around it. Good video zero!
About R.O.B., cince the projectile reflects on surfaces, they can camp and can hit you almost no matter where you are if you both are far away from eacher other (he can shoot it up or down so it reflects on the ground; aka can hit you on a big radius without even moving). But the bigger projectile does have a smaller controls and the small projectile barely hurts you - plus it has a cooldown. Either way, thanks for the video. Really helped about the Belmonts :^)
This video was very helpful. I don't have a switch myself so I can't really practice but I play with friends when they have them. I am a part of my school's smash club and we had our first tournament today. I'm a Kirby main and it was my first time playing agaisnt Richter in the 2nd round. I won, but itwas really difficult getting around his specials. I ended up making it to top 8 and we're continuing the tournament next week. Thanks for the helpful video Zero!
Yeah countering projectile spammers can be very difficult at times, especially when they are waiting for you to dodge them. Young Link, for example, can be really difficult for me to deal with at times. Thanks for the informative video! Gonna try implementing these tips into my gameplay
You can actually change the arc of the axe by holding forwards or backwards before the throw. It’s not quite as drastic as Yoshi’s egg-it only changes the horizontal range by about 1.5 training stage squares in either direction-but it does make running in a bit more risky.
Nothing is more aggravating than fighting a Link on a Battlefield stage. You can't approach them from above due to the platforms, approaching from the sides is asking to get hit with a Smash attack, and combined with the atrocious amounts of lag and t-bagging after every kill, it becomes grating really fast.
Here's a tip against the YL matchup: they will usually use a forward aerial attack after using the arrow or boomerang at close range because both of those moves combo into a fair. That being said, don't try and punish with an aerial of your own after shielding their projectile or else you'll take a Fair to the face. From my experience you should try and punish with a grounded attack instead.
parrying against projectiles is high-risk low-reward. there is literally no reason to do it right now. if it reflected projectiles then you'd have more counterplay options than just jump or roll. what parrying has done historically doesn't matter anywhere near as much as having actual counterplay options against projectiles
It's annoying how effective spamming projectiles is in this game. Not only that it slows down the pace of each match to a halt. It's unfortunate that people would rather cheese than actually improve their skills
yeah it is a skill in and of itself to keep them away but otherwise i agree defensive play will definately shape the meta it is bc the game is not good
You can move your shield around, so if your shield is too small to normally block an attack you can move your shield in the direction of the attack to absorb the hit. Holding B while doing this will prevent you from doing a shield roll when trying to move your shield in front of, or behind you.
@@Conoert for other readers. Do you think the poster reads every comment? I would send him a DM if I wanted to talk to him directly, not use the RUclips comment section and hope he reads what I said.
There is one more advanced and situational shield option that allows the player to deflect projectiles if they graze the shield. However, I can not confirm whether this saves on shield damage, but logic says that it would.
An essential tip is to master your dodging techniques, a lot of samus, link, and ness mains NEED to hit you with their projectiles to establish combos. Every time people spam projectiles at me, I always keep a distance and it forces them to walk the shortest bit closer to me so they can land their hits. They'll try to hit me again and I'll dodge, nair, and then punish. Once you take away their main technique, it opens up their weaknesses which consist of an inability to short hop, melee combo, block, or grab. Also reading your opponent is good too.
Phil Denzmore, Jr. I’ve never heard it called shield stabbing. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be called shield poking regardless if you got hit by something like an aerial vs a projectile.
You only talked about counter play for 1 projectile at a time lol. But it's way more complicated and hard then this. You didn't talk about what you do when there are multiple projectiles on screen. Like you can't just jump over links arrows because he will boomerang upwards right after covering ground and air. Same with Richter. Not really helpful :/
It's why you got to be patient. He said you shouldn't be jumping and dashing all the time. Sometimes carefully moving closer is all it takes to get some opportunities. Punishing rolling and air dodges if they punk out from the corner of camping. Play it safe and dont always shield every projectile.
@@Daniel328DT I know patience is key in these types of MUs, but when a Belmont throws the Holy Water on the ground and removes the more up close option, throws the Axe to close off the jump over the fire option, and then throws the cross to continue the pressure, it's pretty impossible to get in. Especially since they can always use their long range tilts, f smash or aerials if you get to close. As predictable as it is, fighting a Belmont is very degenerate and if they have a lead (probably because you messed up one or two times, let's be honest) the need to close the gap becomes much more urgent, which of course leads to more mistakes.
@@robertej09 lemme give you Belmont advice. All the projectiles have lag. So you have to be patient and wait for the opening. (Usually I find one right after holy water and you shield the cross--or shield the cross and run under the axe that they throw next) once you get the opening you run in, and Belmont's get very scared. I've seen that almost always like to roll backwards. So hold out! Keep running with their roll and then since you read that roll like a boss, you can punish how you like. Smash attack, tilt, dash attack, or start a combo. (Similar with links I believe but I haven't played against so many.)
@@robertej09 Since I like a lot the character-concrete ways, some things of some characters and map layouts: -Ridley is really good to just jump over all the Belmont and go with the down-air spike hit, also side-special is good when you get the gap. The down-air is better on platformless maps, since you can end up in a platform or he could have more comfortable ways to move (that's what I've seen on experience) -Belmon'ts zoning is easy to avoid with Megaman side-shit. That small dude is a hell of a machine. -Wario's neutral-special and side-special are good for moving (sometimes) around the projectiles. -Game Watch's bucket is a anti-holy grial -Lucario's and Greninja's counters are good to move around if you face it right, instead of using shields or so, I've found it pretty useful (greninjas teleport is the most useful of both, imo) -Incineroar benefits a lot of the predictable behaviour of Belmont's zoning with his down-special and can enter fast and hard if you catch the Belmont with up-special and side-special. -Bowser Jr up-special is risky but useful too on evading and punishing, but you'll mostly get punished after it, mostly like Kirby down-special. -Small characters are god's of rolling Belmont's, that's how I usually play Pichu (Haven't tried with Pikachu, I don't play him neither inform myself of him that much) -Palutena works pretty well against Belmont with her moveset. - Also I'm a casual player. Really critical but in practice some of those can't be useful against a -truly- good player of Belmont(Bowser Jr, for example). Most of those are a bit obvious and probably the best way to go (as always) is to mix up things to confuse the oponent. Some have said too, but Belmon'ts projectiles are really laggy, I find harder to deal with a Megaman who knows how to aim rather than them, that's something easy to see if you have played some zoners on other fightning games, or at least it feels like it.
As a Robin main, I find I struggle heavily against zoners with better long-range tools than me, like Samus or Link. I'm getting better, but am still getting used to a lot of Ultimate's mechanics now that perfect shielding as it was back in 4 is gone. Jumping usually seems to be the best way to deal with projectile characters, but keep in mind that most of them have anti-air options that do pretty decent damage. Every situation is different, and having knowledge of the matchup seems to be the best way to find success.
As a Ness/Lukas main you should know smash Ultimate has ruined your name. More than before all I've seen from Lukas and Ness is spamming pk fire until I'm off stage and then it's a constant spam of pk freeze/spark. I think I'm honestly seen Lukas/Ness online that do that, and when I get them off they don't even know how to recover because they're just trying to cheese with the characters
@@TheWilliamSnfrd ? _"Who hates people who complain about characters just because they aren't smart enough to learn how to beat them? Get a better neutral game"_ - You in an earlier thread. Also it's Lucas. And I kind of agree with your individual points but still. Consistency.

I think you should put more effort into these, they could really be something great but you do it all one take and really seems like you’re just saying stuff on stream that can go in a RUclips video. Why would you block and then jump?
Someone like villager set up traps with their projectiles thanks to their slow moving speed. A common one is to follow it and grab you because you're shielding their projectile. Shield into jump can be a mix up against this. But completely agree, these guides are over hyped, he's barely trying. Was really disappointed at the sonic video.
@@angryvibes8611I'm not a g. First of all, the dude doesn't even understand why it could be done in certain situations. Second of all I didn't put much time into typing about it. Dumb question in the first place. He just can't understand it I guess. I do.
Actually you can change the arc of the ax a little - use the stick to aim close or far after the animation starts. It's not much but it can be enough to catch people off guard. Just like you can aim the whip up and down slightly.
You can also deal with some projectiles if your character has a really low crouch. I know Wii Fit can just duck under falco's lasers and his shine, to the annoyance of a few campers I play with.
I mean at least young link has some form of melee options rather than only projectiles. But I can agree his projectiles are very annoying to go up against
I sometimes play Samus and what I do i charge the neutral B when at full power i go close combat then shot a missile (side B) if they air dodge I’ll wait until they’re about land and shot my neutral B if they decide to use shield it will break if both attacks hit not really related to the video but oh well

@@bakersdozen4283 I think Samus's/Dark Samus's neutral b isn't too bad IN NO LAG. Wifi lets characters like Link and the Belmonts reach top tier status.
@@jansensamosa6317 He's not. People just aren't used to dealing with his new bombs. He's actually worse in Ultimate than he was in Wii U. And don't use "Salem just topped a big tourney with link" because that's precisely because people aren't used to his bombs yet. Link will be on his way down the tier list pretty soon.
I'm gonna disagree with both of you. Link isn't top tier but definitely not worse than smash 4. Characters like Inkling and Belmonts just handle better than Link, but his new bomb is almost definitely an upgrade, along with his less laggy grab and good projectile game. Top tier? No. Worse than Smash 4? Also no. Just gonna be mid tier I think.
It's worth noting that perfect shielding projectiles will still work in situations where your sheild is low enough to get sheild stabbed. Risky though as that may be.
See if all else fails use palutena. Her down-b is a counter and a reflect so as long as you time it right you can beat projectiles by doing that. She also has ranged attacks as well (side b, neutral b) so it’s easy to force people who do this to actually change strategies mid fight. Top that off with parrying and dodging and you’re set.
Simon and Richter can curve the ax by tilting the stick after hitting b. Also if you catch the holy water they can't use the attack while you have it. This can be good if your opponent is spamming holy water.
As a mario main I'm mainly having problems with cloud and Bayonetta. Really tough to close the gap. I can Cape or sidestep most stuff reliably, but their dash attacks are hard to counter as it seems like there's next to no lag.

@@solstice871 how should i hit them back? The only way to knock them back is with side b or neutral b but both of those are incredibly slow and hard to time correctly because of the bounce and varying speed. I don't think you can side air it back either cause your body is a hit box during that.
@@kimaroo1334 can you not hold A to rapid jab 1 and hit them back like that?

In traditional fighting games, you can walk and then block and there is no shield break. That's why in smash it can be particularly annoying as more projectiles and a diminishing shield.

@@fores7ght no shit, Sherlock
I was just struggling against a Young Link online and thinking about looking up tips for dealing with projectiles. Thanks for the tips, ZeRo!
If you get "spammed" there are two things to consider.
1. The person "spamming" may not be that good.
2. You may not be that good.
3. The person playing is a dick
4. The character you're playing is weak against zoning.
...I feel like it's usually 1 or 3 if not both.
I imagine these videos are hard with one person controlling two characters, keep up the great work dude
parrying should reflect projectiles, change my mind
I agree
It reflects holdable items I think
Or at least it should give the other person lag like in rivals of aether
parrying in history doesnt Reflect, it is used to Deflect. so you are factually incorrect.
parrying against projectiles is high-risk low-reward. there is literally no reason to do it right now. if it reflected projectiles then you'd have more counterplay options than just jump or roll.
what parrying has done historically doesn't matter anywhere near as much as having actual counterplay options against projectiles
The Belmont axes arch can be manipulated by immediately inputting forward/backward after the initial B
It's annoying how effective spamming projectiles is in this game. Not only that it slows down the pace of each match to a halt.
It's unfortunate that people would rather cheese than actually improve their skills
To some people, it's a legit strategy. I honestly hate it.
yeah it is a skill in and of itself to keep them away but otherwise i agree defensive play will definately shape the meta it is bc the game is not good
Nathan Evans *years of research intensify*
even now campy characters are clearly worse than agression of the top tier characters in tourneys
Don’t forget about ness he can just pk fire u till 100% and kill u
You can move your shield around, so if your shield is too small to normally block an attack you can move your shield in the direction of the attack to absorb the hit. Holding B while doing this will prevent you from doing a shield roll when trying to move your shield in front of, or behind you.

There is one more advanced and situational shield option that allows the player to deflect projectiles if they graze the shield. However, I can not confirm whether this saves on shield damage, but logic says that it would.
Thank you! Can you make a video on how to counter a Link/Young Link/Toon Link?
I'd say Young Link is the biggest threat of the three.
I'd say Toon Link is the least threatening of the three.
Wish the had endlag on moves that really need it
Don’t that’s my main
An essential tip is to master your dodging techniques, a lot of samus, link, and ness mains NEED to hit you with their projectiles to establish combos. Every time people spam projectiles at me, I always keep a distance and it forces them to walk the shortest bit closer to me so they can land their hits. They'll try to hit me again and I'll dodge, nair, and then punish. Once you take away their main technique, it opens up their weaknesses which consist of an inability to short hop, melee combo, block, or grab. Also reading your opponent is good too.
You mean shield poking?
poking is when they hit shield from a safe distance, stabbing ignores shield
Phil Denzmore, Jr. I’ve never heard it called shield stabbing. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be called shield poking regardless if you got hit by something like an aerial vs a projectile.
Phil Denzmore, Jr. No, shield poking is exactly what zero calls shield stabbing

JUST PARRY BRO 4Head
I have 2 options to deal with projectiles:
1. Mario's Cape
2. Never run as Link, and keep that Hylian Shield up at all times.
Just shield and walk then
@@Daniel328DT I know patience is key in these types of MUs, but when a Belmont throws the Holy Water on the ground and removes the more up close option, throws the Axe to close off the jump over the fire option, and then throws the cross to continue the pressure, it's pretty impossible to get in.
@@robertej09 Since I like a lot the character-concrete ways, some things of some characters and map layouts:
-Ridley is really good to just jump over all the Belmont and go with the down-air spike hit, also side-special is good when you get the gap. The down-air is better on platformless maps, since you can end up in a platform or he could have more comfortable ways to move (that's what I've seen on experience)
-Belmon'ts zoning is easy to avoid with Megaman side-shit. That small dude is a hell of a machine.
-Wario's neutral-special and side-special are good for moving (sometimes) around the projectiles.
-Game Watch's bucket is a anti-holy grial
-Lucario's and Greninja's counters are good to move around if you face it right, instead of using shields or so, I've found it pretty useful (greninjas teleport is the most useful of both, imo)
-Incineroar benefits a lot of the predictable behaviour of Belmont's zoning with his down-special and can enter fast and hard if you catch the Belmont with up-special and side-special.
-Bowser Jr up-special is risky but useful too on evading and punishing, but you'll mostly get punished after it, mostly like Kirby down-special.
-Small characters are god's of rolling Belmont's, that's how I usually play Pichu (Haven't tried with Pikachu, I don't play him neither inform myself of him that much)
-Palutena works pretty well against Belmont with her moveset.
-
Also I'm a casual player.

Certain scenarios. Shield can be threatening. Then you see a giant projectile coming at you. It's not like you always should shield and then jump.
