I was 10 years old at that time and living in Mexico for a couple of years. We flew a couple of days after to Los Angeles and on take off saw the debris and parts of the plane on my right side. Will never forget it.

the cvr of Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 182 where the pilot told his wife goodbye and that he loved her. 10 seconds is a long time to watch certain death coming at you.

There was a lot of other stuff that happened with this flight. My dad was the S/O. My mom said the last thing my dad said to her that night when she dropped him off at the bus to LAX was, "I've got a bad feeling about tonight." I heard there were personal issues between the Captain and F/O, and that they used the CVR for training after that to teach people to work together in the cockpit. There were other technical things too. It was a mess.

I was a flight attendant for Western Airlines at the time. Some of the flight attendants on that flight (who didn't make it) were fresh out of flight attendant training. I remember how devastating it was for our whole Western family. Thanks for posting this video.

I remember this all too well. My Mom worked for Chuck (Pilot) and Helen Gilbert. I was home when the phone call came in...my Mom answered and just started crying. It was Helen. They were good people, and had a special needs son.

You don't often hear grown men howling like that, that was just as chilling as the first recreated simulation I saw of this tragedy.
Yeah this is the 2nd Ive seen and I cant remember which creator already did this crash...I could search I guess, lol.
The thing with crashes like this is the pilots KNOW for several seconds they are going to crash and die and there's nothing they can do to stop it. At least the passengers who died didn't see what was coming.

I used to date an airline pilot, and asked him about this, saying if it was me I'd be screaming all the way down. Then asked how come when transcripts of crashes are released, the public doesn't hear/see that. He said that yes, they always scream but for the most part this is kept from the public for the sake of the families.

@@cavaalli Everybody usually does the 3-4 times a year he narrates. As fantastic as his recreations and his production skills are, I don't think he fully understands why a million+ subscribe. I sit with my mouth open on a weekly basis at the way these simulations put me right there...on the wing...in the cockpit or flying along to the left a little behind or a little below a doomed aircraft high in a moonlit sky. When he did UPS 6 that crashed in Dubai, I felt the pain and horror of a smoke blinded pilot desperately trying to find the airport, his captain asphyxiated and pleading ATC for vectors. Blood chilling. When he talks it's TOTALLY different. Too bad...oh well...I'll have to wait another week!

@@FLAMEalan Well if you think most DC-10 crashes are because of it being badly designed, then you really know nothing about pilot error and what the main reasons for crashing are. Planes that are known to be great like the 737 and 747 had many "flaws" that were corrected over the years. You can check out the Boeing 737 rudder issues in the 90s or the 737 Max's MCAS Issues in 2018/2019). The point is the actual DC-10 was responsible for crashes like Turkish Airlines Flight 981, but definitely had nothing to do with this one, United 232, American 191 (the one that first made the plane seem such a villain) and many others.

I was wondering when they'd make a video on this one. Hearing the CVR for the first time and every time after always rattles me to the core. The fear in the pilot's voice is beyond terrifying.

I was a 10-year old boy living in Mexico City and I remember learning about this crash on my way to school early in the morning. It was the only thing anyone talked about for weeks. Newspapers were filled with pictures of the carnage. It was incredibly tragic.
The Pilot screaming in the end confirmed my fear of crashing in a plane. So heart breaking. May they all RIP.

The tragic part was the audio. The pilots' conversations (when they realized they were going to crash) were so disturbing. Because of their shouting, their help to save the plane was the most disturbing part :(

The audio combined with the visual recreation of the accident sent chills through me head to toe, a moment of utter Hell and hopelessness. A miracle anyone survived at all.
I was a 9 year old kid living in Mexico City, and this crash was all over the news. The press published grim details and photos, for days... Ir was perhaps the first shock news coverage that I rememeber. Now, listening the chilling recordings of the crew, I revived the impact this tragedy had... It was even more terrible than I remembered.
The audio from those poor pilots last seconds on this earth Is one of the most heart wrenching and terribly sad things I have ever heard. To hear that much fear in a man's voice is just...

To be fair, this accident wasnt the fault of the DC-10. Many were, but not this one.
I personally knew Capt. Gilbert, and have gone flying with him in his personal airplane (I used to work where he kept it): he was a damn good pilot - one of Western Airlines' senior pilots, and he flew L.A.- Mexico City on a regular basis, becausd he liked that run.
The controller he was speaking to did sound like he spoke good English, but in the un-edited audio, even he was confused as to which side of the lights they were supposed to land on.
I can only presume that Capt. Gilbert tried to land, because he had flown there so many times (hundreds - literally), and he was comfortable doing so, even in bad weather...and unfortunately, that's when accidents will happen when least expected.
He was my great uncle. Thank you for the kind words.

He was a great man, and one of the people I always liked to see, when I got out of school, and peddled my bike over to Warbirds West.
What really rubbed everybody that knew him the wrong way, was when the Mexican government decided it was his fault: the fact that landing procedures during the kind of circumstances under which this accident happened, were changed, pretty much says it wasn't his fault.
I've just realized something: I must think about him much more than I thought I did, because, whenever somebody tries to call me Charlie (what everybody called him), I correct them, and say "No - I'm Charles, not Charlie.".

I feel it was a major deflection of responsibility of the airport operators to blame the pilots here, when they left the ILS active leading straight to a closed runway littered with construction equipment in bad weather. We can only hope that this incident prevented more major disasters of this kind.

Look, it may appear that nothing's gained by peeing on Capt. Gilbert's grave but other pilots will watch this video and read these comments. Gilbert was the pilot on this approach and landing. His lack of professionalism caused this accident. You're not a great pilot if you aren't on top of things 100% of each flight. If you're a pilot you can never let your guard down. That's what you're paid for. Stay on top of things or go get another job. Thanks.

If you can find it... US Air's 737 crash! (Rudder Reversal) I believe it was over Pennsylvania. I think they took it down because it was so bad. They knew it was over!

It was a contributing factor, but the fundamental problem was their confusion over which runway they were landing at, and not using the term "sidestep".

It was an interesting mistake that I don't think is made clear. The pilots somehow believed that the ILS was taking them to 23R. As they were crossing the threshold they then realized that they were supposed to sidestep, or realized that the runway they were about to land on was 23L. It was somewhat understandable I think because it is a matter of habit that the ILS takes you to the runway you land on.
@@kentbetts Sure, but people get hung up on what the controllers could have done better. They go home that night, unlike the pilots. Thus us pilots need to think again, and again about what does and does not make sense. If you are told 23 RIGHT and you expect 23 LEFT you need to speak up or go missed. Our airport has dual runways. I've lost count of the number of times I asked "verify landing 31 LEFT...". Its a shorter, darker runway.
I'm shocked that anyone survived this. Plane tears off landing gear and uncontrollably banks into the ground before smashing into a building. The survivors are quite lucky.

And just to think one or two of the passengers didn’t even get hurt. The ones that survived were seated in a 20 foot section of the plane that didn’t burn. I saw the pics they were damn lucky to be in that part of the plane.

There was a plane crash in Paraguay in the year 1996. (LAC Colombia). If I'm not mistaken, the pilot tried to make a joke to the co-pilot shortly after takeoff and he put the engines to idle. The plane crashed in an urban area, and it fell over a volleyball field where members of a family had a gathering, and 18 members of that family on land perished. There is also recordings of the black box. You should make a video of that accident.

With that much disagreement in the cockpit, PIC should have called for TOGO much earlier.
The CVR literally made mr cry, those poor pilots knowing that they’re about to die, i have listened to the same cvr once or twice before this, but it’s still very emotional to listen to it, i have always dubbed this crash as a very emotional and sad one, and i don’t care if it’s pilot error because this crash was so horrific

Pilot error does not necessarily indicate a "bad pilot" per se. Usually the NTSB uncovers multiple contributing factors. Ultimately, yes, responsibility is considered to lie with the pilot. But in crashes like this, often systemic changes are made to make it less likely to occur for future pilots.
Airline pilots have extensive experience and training. If that isn't enough, or if a bad one did slip through the cracks, the NTSB knows something deeper needs to change to prevent it from happening again. Only case I can think of that's close to a "bad pilot" was the one on the Canary Islands (worst in history). And that guy was very experienced, they just realized that in addition to a number of other issues, to much emphasis was put on flights arriving on time and not enough on safety in the workplace.
This wasn't pilot error, this was procedural error. The crew had no idea that they had to sidestep and so because the ATC never explicitly mentioned that only one of the runways had an ILS it would not be unfair to say that they assumed the ILS they were coming down from was for the runway they were meant to land at.
The ATC should have clearly stated that only 23L has an ILS and that they needed to sidestep to 23R but he didn't, though you can't really fault him either as there was no procedure in place in 1979. The ATC assumed the crew knew they had to sidestep while the crew assumed they were gliding down the ILS towards 23R.

We are too reliant on AI these days and too comfortable with it. It was NOT ONE miscommunication. It was a FLAWED continuous miscommunication and a flawed theory that people in a stressed situation with split seconds to make a correction could deal with a mistake if they misunderstood the difference between RIGHT and LEFT after taking over from the machine.
I was a Western. Airlines second officer at the time and flew this same trip just days before and after the accident without incident. This accident was one of an unfortunate number that lead to the FAA requiring Crew Resource Management of all airline crews to reinforced proper and complete communication among ALL crew members. Also Western thereafter required that a Captain that had not before been to Mexico City have along an instructor pilot to explain the special nature of flying to the city.
Sounds like the runways are fked up at that airport.
@@stonecold5373 Runway closures are routine and long-term in some cases. I was based in Detroit and we had multiple closed runways for about 2-3 years. At Moline, they had the entire airport tore up for at least 3-4 years and we landed on a taxiway for about 9 months. I remember flying in one day and saying to the controller: "Glad to see y'all finally got the place put back together". 😂 He laughed and said "Believe me, nobody is happier than WE are!!"
Western Airlines is just to blame for this accident. Informed 12 days before the accident and still haven't come up with briefing pilots approaching Mexico City Airport- that is just criminal. Also Mexico Airport should have closed their ILS- no point for non-functioning runway.

And now, the actual goverment are so dumb, and cancelled a very needed Airport just to please the current president, a naive and stupid person who never saw what the people really needs. The video shows more building traffic then there was at the time, the front end of the plane went into the building but part of the bakc of the plane was left intact. It was mostly people in the back of the plane who survived, if I recall correctly.
No kidding, at 130 knots through a building, the impact alone is hard to imagine surviving, let alone the fire. You just never know. Usually the rear of the plane is the worst place to be seated in case of a crash and fire, but since it separated from the wings those people escaped the fire ball.

I absolutely love your channel. But what first attracted me was not only how much info and explanation you give, but I loved reading it and the anticipation of waiting to see what happens. I do prefer the non voice video, but it's your channel to run as you like. :)
I hated reading it. I always had to pause it and sheet. Wish he could release two versions. One with text, one with voice. But I know that is a lot of work and he probably doesn't have time for that .

I used to live in Mexico City and I was a witness to this accident. I was at the airport that morning for a flight to New York. The DC-10's tail and #2 engine skidded to within about 50 feet of where I parked my car and was stopped by a cyclone fence. When our Eastern Airlines 727 was taxiing out to runway 23R for takeoff, we went past the smoldering wreckage. Our captain announced that the site of the tragic Western Airlines crash was visible out the left side of the aircraft. In the 1960s I flew that same Western Airlines LAX-MEX route many times, mostly on Boeing 720s.
Good lord, that's a little morbid of the Captain of your flight to treat the wreck like it was some sort of sightseeing object...I'm surprised the airport wasn't immediately shut down entirely as soon as the crash occured. It was certainly a different time back then

Although the original posters comment does raise some questions... wasn't there a reporter on this crashed flight that after covering the most recent DC-10's crash said that he would not fly on one unless it was the ONLY option. If there were 727's flying in and out of that airport, seems like the reporter would have flown on one of them instead...

I had an Aunt who was a Flight Attendant for Western at that time. She flew that flight and flights from LAX to northern California. My family had just moved out of California that July and I had never heard of this crash until now.

I really liked it without the voice over. The fear and the ambience of thrilling is totally gone with the voice. Please change it back to the old one. Rest, it was a very brilliant and emotional video.

Honestly this is the most disturbing/haunting CVR I’ve ever listened to. Not just because of the fatality/survivor ratio and what situation the pilots were in, but it was so quick. This incident, from the initial touchdown to the final impact, took less than 20 seconds to wrap itself up. And there was nothing the pilots could’ve done to save their stricken aircraft and souls on board.
Twenty seconds of that kind of horror must have felt like an eternity. If you've ever been in an earthquake you can probably relate.
Man, that CVR audio got me teary eyed. RIP to everyone who lost their lives. 🙏
This reminds me of the disaster Flt.006 Singapore Airlines at Taoyuan International Airport, Taiwan. Airport authorities FAILED to mark the closed runway in a way that would have prevented the disaster. A large illuminated X way before the threshold could have alerted the pilots to initiate a go-around power setting, BEFORE touchdown, and possibly clearing the truck that they hit.

Sometimes life ends so abruptly, and often in fear; for most people when it is not their time, but it happens. So sad!
That’s a pilot’s error, no blame on ATC. There was a NOTAM who specified the 23L was closed. They knew the ILS 23L should either end with a missed approach or with a landing on 23R. If they went so low to hit a truck and touch down partly on the grass, it means that upon reaching the DA/DH they didn’t have visual reference for a safe landing, not even for a straight in landing on 23L, not to mention performing a side step maneuver to 23R, which should have been done at or above 700 feet AGL and at least one mile from the runway.
You sound like you have some aviation experience. I have spent years trying to understand this situation. I originally thought that the fault lay with the controller for not specifying that they were NOT on approach to 23R and that a side-step to 23R from 23L was needed before touch down. If you are using ILS to land you should assume you are lined up with the correct runway imo.
Mexico didn't tell them to sidestep how is it the pilots fault?

Hey unpopular opinion, but I liked reading rather than the audio commentary. It's nothing personal, and nothing against your voice. I just prefer to read the information so I can better comprehend it. Also i feel like the text adds to the somber feel of the video better. Cool of you to switch it up though.
I like the voiceover because I’m often doing things while running the video and not looking at the screen. Maybe they all should do audio plus closed captions.

Very sad to see death coming at you without devine intervention it's eminent. I just recently recovered from 6 days in the hospital with covid and double pneumonia , lying in the ER not knowing which way this was going to end I told God I didn't want it to end this way but if this was his plan then lets roll with it and fear left me. Recovered fully with minor side affects to God be the glory, you never know when where or how death knocks on your door be ready my friends.

To be fair, both this terrible crash & the New Zealand Antarctica crash (CFIT caused) were pilot error.
And United 191 was due to bad maintenance procudure.
Yes the DC 10 had defective Cargo Door latch issues.
But a beautiful sucessful plane nonetheless !
The fact that the plane was a DC-10 had nothing to do with the crash. This was a communication- and pilot error-caused crash, and would have happened no matter what aircraft they were flying.
Didn't stop McDonnell-Douglas for getting sued for 18 million dollars over this.
None of the three fatal crashes involving the DC-10 in 1979 had anything to do with the aircraft manufacturer.Though having their name connected to three crashes that year didn't help their reputation after the cargo door incidents.

Once again, a series of tiny errors, each insignificant on its own, coalesed into a deadly disaster. One of those, where u just cant point a finger and assign all the blame, coz it all had to happen for the flight to end in disaster.
And that CVR.... its just sooooo much worse to listen to than to read it. Those poor pilots knowing, they were going to die.
The recording really adds to the eerie end to this. Terrifying.
ah the 70s, the time when standard aviation phraseology was still only a suggestion. It's sad that even with Tenerife it took so long for standard phraseology to become commonplace. Aviation rules only change when it's paid in blood.

@raw viper Flight regulations are written in blood. If I can take anything away from this horrific crash it's that the airline industry has removed so many of these inefficiencies that have resulted in death.
