The thing that always sticks in my mind about Maserati is when I worked in a Shell station and one of our very regular customers had a 3200, which looked rather lovely. He CONSTANTLY came in and complained about it a bit broken in a wide range of different ways whenever I asked about it. Replaced it with a 4200 though, so must have got under his skin somewhat, and he loved that one.
This is a great car and it is a big pleasure to drive! I own one of these unpopular Duo-Select versions, but I love it anyhow. With the right attitude these cars will provide a lot of joy! And the design and the interior is just beautiful and stylish. I just love it!
Interesting and honest review. I had the loan of one and found it to be a total ball of confusion. Appalling auto box but sublime engine. Beautiful looking interior - yet compromised and uncomfortable. Elegant bodywork - yet Corrosion abounds. I was still sad when returning it having been entranced and captivated by the sound of that engine. Glad I didn't own it but so pleased to have experienced it
A very fair and accurate review - the seats offer no support whatsoever, and I suspect you didn't have the TPMS option checked which is a good thing... they're a nuisance. But all those things rapidly melt away when you hear that soundtrack in sport mode... it's magnificent and the harder you push it, the better it sounds. BTW - Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is the best rubber for these, widely accepted that P-Zeros on this car don't perform well in the UK.
@@lukemallory7832 I’ve got a 2006 QP with the F1 and it’s awesome. If your handy with the tools you can save a small fortune. Clutch is pricey but drive it manual and sport mode and you’ll be good. 76K miles on mine with original clutch.

Great review Jay. I have the 2009 GTS and I absolutely love it. It is weird how these cars seem to have got this love hate relationship, but you explain that beautifully. The only issue I have had with mine, is that sometimes the steering just seems to disappear for probably 3 seconds, like switching the lights off and back on, just longf enough for you to notice but, thankfully, not long enough to cause a problem. First time on your channel, well impressed and look forward to seeing more.
After so many years still nothing can surpass the sound of the engine in that price range. In a Drive Tribe interview with Jeremy Clarkson passes Maserati while JK sits in a coffee bar. His reaction is priclees.
I'm also sick of the more power, more than 180mph, lower and lower 0-60 dashes. It's almost an irrelevance. You're right, feel is much more important. 👍🏻👏🏻
Great video Jay. Great to see your real world use instead of just the 30 minute drive and judgement. I had a sport gt for about 2 years and loved it. Sold it with 70k miles and had no issues. Since then I had 2 ghiblis and now have a qp6 S and a levante S for my wife. Love them both. The qp6 is not quite as special as the qp5 but for daily use I can't think of anything better. Same with the levante, went from a porsche macan s and never looked back. The itialian cars have way more charm and personality!!
Just bought a 2013 Granturismo Sport. Already booked in at Sports Italia and cannot wait to get it on the B roads this summer. I’ll drop you an email nearer the time to see if you’re interested in taking it out
They are 6’4” wide which gives you 1” either side on a London width restriction, the one on Hammersmith bridge I loved to take at an illegal speed and never hit the mirrors, had mine for 8 years and love it, and the button thing I got over after a month, the noise and punch I still have yet to

Finally the review I was waiting for. Thank you. I personally would also like to see a review of a modern (ish) attainable Ferrari, the Scaglietti 612. Not a good looker but great value for money and rather practical..with a great soundtrack.
I bought a 2018 Ghibli S Q4 and absolutely love it. Have had no issues at all but i also have a bumper to bumper warranty so the "break downs" don't really matter to me.
Awesome sound capture vs inadequate sound for your Lexus GSF review. These QP sound good as they pass by. If I let go of my GSF, yes, I’d be looking at QP where existing Mas mechanic knew car and approved as daily for enthusiast.
I remember being at Spa in 2004 outside the hotel / restaurant (sorry - don’t recall the name) on the long road before Francorchamps race track. We’d heard that Schumi was coming for the traditional pre race dinner with the Ferrari mechanics so me, a friend and some German fans were waiting. For 5 minutes we could hear this wailing engine snaking through the hills and trees, high pitched and getting the treatment from its driver. Then, in a silver quattroporte, rocks up this demure, rather short chap, no fat whatsoever and happy to shake hands with us all and do signatures. Charming and friendly to a fault! On Sunday he didn’t win the race - Kimi did that, but he did win his last world championship. Great guy, a great memory and a great car!
I've taken my maserati on the track. It was amazing. I competed against dozens of cars and beat most. Missing a track day with this car should be criminal. Handled AMAZING.
I had 3 Masers, all of them very good cars, specially the GranTurismo, a truly driver’s car that looks and sounds amazing. And yes, they’re pretty reliable
Great video. This car will be remembered as one of the greatest luxury saloons ever created. Future classic. I have a 2013 GranTurismo Sport and these cars have the best exhaust note in the world.
I agree with you. After these modern wiggles fade off these beautiful pininfarina Ferrari 2008 2012 with radica wood and italian leather will endure . They produce in 9 years less Quattroporte than what porche produces in less than 1 year.
Bro, I am madly in love with the Quattroporte. It is one of the most beautiful sedans ever made. And on top of that the best V8 sound ever. I don't care if it falls apart while I am driving it. I still love it. I will always have a Maserati Quattroporte in my my collection. They depreciate in value like throwing a rock in the ocean. Some people say you buy it because you don't have money enough to buy something better. The fact is if you buy a Maserati you need to be well off to maintain it. BTW, you have the coolest shirt. I want one.
The heated seats were an option because they eliminated the stitching in the seat centres. I would always go online and spec a yellow one with black wheels and yellow calipers and the all black cabin with yellow stitching (and the all-important MC line extended carbon fibre) and if I ticked the heated/ventilated seats box, the yellow stitching in the seat centres would vanish, so I unticked it every time. Sadly nobody seems to have actually specced a real one in these colours for me to buy used now.
Great review, be sure to thank the owner! Seriously, if you haven't seen it, watch the review of this car on Hagerty Revelations. The title says that it is "Scientifically proven to be an aphrodisiac". Seriously. They measured testosterone levels of men AND women after hearing this car. Listening to you talk, I find it hard to imagine you finding a replacement people mover that you will enjoy as much as this gorgeous piece of Italia. For perspective, I own (and genuinely LOVE) a 987 Boxster S, and a Model 3 Performance. Whenever you show this car, I STILL wind up going to Autotrader, and drooling a little.
Still a design which is the epitome of what a four door saloon could be. Nothing yet to match it, not even the latest QP itself. The sound..The sound!!
It really is one of my all time favourite cars, i hope it keeps serving you well and you keep enjoying it for a long time because what else is there from that brand thats better? Pitty about the seats since these are trimmed in alcantara so they are the grippiest setup they made, my only suggestion would be for you to start wearing corderoy pants and jackets to increase the friction coefficient, but that would compromise your trademark look and we don't want that...
Drove a Biturbo Spyder for 8 years as a daily driver. First 2 years were spent improving reliability and undoing the previous owner's cheap fixes. We found parts from 7 different brands (Alfa, FIAT, Volvo, Ford, etc.). Despite the Biturbo reputation the last 6 years it was dead reliable and didn't let me down once. If I bought one again (and I might), I'd be sure to sort out the critical bits right away. A well modified Biturbo is great fun to drive.
I love them I just wished they'd reduce the parts price for older cars, that's the killer and it harms the residuals. From 2004 to 2017 I had 2 x 3200 GTs, a QP 4.2 GT and 2 x 4200 GTs and prob covered over 50k miles in them in total. Apart from the main power cable to the alternator chafing on the head casting on a 4200 GT and nearly setting the car on fire after stranding me, they never failed to get me from A to B. Servicing isn't ruinous but if any part is required that is unique to Maserati it costs a bloody fortune and takes about 2 weeks to arrive.
I enjoyed your comments on the Quatroporte. I own a 2009 Maserati Granturismo S with the 4 liter engine. I love driving it but it only has 30,000 miles on it. It is still gorgeous and runs great. I always drive in manual mode.
Love your descriptions with included history and items of interest. Well done for saying that how fast on the track is an irrelevant. As an ex racer, I know the slowest of road cars will reach the national speed limit so its the experience that matters
I had a 07 Gransport, for 8 years it never let me down , put a full Larini back exhaust on it and it was wonderful. It was the 4.2 dry sump version of your engine. Yes the odd electrical gremlin which was cured by a restart and all lights cleared. Very practical really… during that sweet spot period when Ferrari were running the show, I sold it the minute I knew all the current crop and shape were coming out to take the brand down to 5 series BMW territory. They have been an absolute disaster for brand and just as a car really. Such a shame to see a brand with more history than even Ferrari get trashed.
What an awesome, genuine and authentic review. Your car is stunning, I don't know what I like more the facelift of your generation or the 2014 version, my significant other has a 2014 GTS and it is badass, I look forward to the cold start every morning, which I'm sure my neighbor's despise LMAO No issues so far just some minor suspension work, but the dealer did mess up the windshield seal when replacing one and water leaked into the interior through the dash messed up the electronic shifter plus who knows what else.....Currently at Dealer ugh
This and the E46 are the most beautiful modern saloons made. I have to admit I never even considered one due to the reputation they have. I'll have it in proper old man spec please, maroon/purple with tan interior. Thank you very much.
Helpful as my mrs really wants one of these ... also she wants one after 3 years of owning a 1.3 2014 yaris and she's never driven anything faster (bigger yes we had an Smax) haha I'm scared for her!
Hi @JayEmm, thanks for these videos, I've been enjoying your wide range of performance/classic car coverage. I would love to see a video covering the Maserati Ghibli, especially the Diesel. Although I wouldn't necessarily go for the Diesel in a perfect world, the pricing of these versions at the moment are very interesting as an alternative, seemingly economical family car.
Love my late model 4.7S. Fast, handsome and - believe it or not - reliable. Regularly drive round Europe and it’s incredibly fast and comfortable on the A roads and then highly enjoyable on the last few miles of twisties
Strange no front parking sensors on a large 100k car. My Freelander of similar age (2007) came with front sensors and and was not even the the top model. Still a great looking and sounding car.
I got my Masaerati almost a year ago and honstly I cant stop smiling everytime I get in to drive. It is spectacular!!! Had no reliable issues yet and surprisingly its not more expensive maintanence than my previous Infiniti. If you do drive it in Sport mode, as the reveiwer does, it can get a little thirsty but overall if you're a driver you are in for a super time!!!! I am Maserati for lifer!!!
I've been liking the Quattroporte since I was 10, however, as I know more about big sedans, I think I'll get a W221 S500L if I can afford one, because I think a relaxing drive, a strong engine and a supple ride with okay handing is what I actually want a big luxury sedan to be, maybe that's because I've become more sophisticated after these 11 years
Having inherited my late Dad's Quattroporte, back in 2010, needless to confirm the issues you have experienced are ALL justified. I do not play GOLF so the Boot was just fine, the Ferrari inspired 4.7ltr power train was a joy to enjoy, (but at 12/15mpg a living nightmare)....did I experience any problems, NOT ONE...not one problem for the 3 years I had the pleasure of owning and enjoying this outstanding Vehicle. Fully agree with your observations on the Heating/Air conditioning...this issue alone was NEVER resolved. Sadly the "MAS" had to go, but if time and providence allow perhaps before I reach my "dotage" another would be seriously considered. Loved the fact that I could drive this onto my local Supermarket carpark, (with 2 very large Willow Trees, full of Nesting ROOKS), Rev the Engine and dissappear before the Parked Cars were covered in Rook C**p....joyous times...G.A.R.
I was looking forward to this! Thanks for sharing your ownership with us. My opinion of Maserati? Mainly through rose tinted glasses at the early cars, the A6G, the Mistral and the Ghibli coupe of the early 70s amongst others. It good to see that recent Masers can match up with its decendants.
Thank you for your indepth personal review of ownership, audio, video, explanation, editing & content. Currently shopping for a 5th generation with ZF transmission, low miles & well kept. Consumers just don't understand a high performance vehicle, it needs to be revved & driven hard after the engine, transmission, differential, tires & brakes are warmed up. Consumers are quick to complain about price & availability of parts & service. Parts are expensive to inventory ( capital, time, real estate ) storing parts is diminishing returns on investment. Good quality expert service cost money.
The surprise here is how much like the Disco Volante that Clarkson drove (with the same engine) the Maserati sounds. All that's missing are the occasional burble with pops from the exhaust. I believe the Alfas are million dollar cars.
I've been very seriously investigating one of these in the US as a replacement for my XJ8. I like big sedans (A8l 4.2l in my past also) and this seems like it would be the ticket. I think they sold much better in the US, but depreciated just as horribly.
I have owned a 1986 420 Biturbo for 8 years and loved it. Only used it as a second car, apart from a few weeks per year in summer. Bought it as a first owner car from a dealership in Italy, where it had been sitting in a warehouse for 12 years. 43.000 Kms on the clock at the time, it still looked and smelled new! I specifically went for the most basic Maserati there is: no electronic injection, no electronic ride adjustment, no intercoolers, no ABS, no power steering, a single exhaust and quite regular size tyres. It did have airconditioning, which was basically all I needed. It was dead cheap when I bought it, invested the same amount again to get it on the road and drove about 10.000 kms over 8 years without any problems worth mentioning. I remember vividly how it was about the most trustworthy and reliable car during a track event with the Maserati club. :D

He CONSTANTLY came in and complained about it a bit broken in a wide range of different ways whenever I asked about it.
Replaced it with a 4200 though, so must have got under his skin somewhat, and he loved that one.
The moment after 20:38 and the downshift and the sound! I am really jealous of you. That car is a feast for the senses :)
As a Ghibli driver I can say you’re spot on on the tyres
I am an apprentice mechanic working on these cars everyday and love working on them. Especially a fan of the 4.2 Quattroporte and Gran Turismo S
You have immense job security as a Maserati mechanic. Nice to be working on decent stuff instead of mk7 Fiestas
@@lukemallory7832 I’ve got a 2006 QP with the F1 and it’s awesome. If your handy with the tools you can save a small fortune. Clutch is pricey but drive it manual and sport mode and you’ll be good. 76K miles on mine with original clutch.
@@peteydynamite8794 agreed.
Nice one. I bet that’s great.
@@AdrianLeggettUK I found a 2005 QP with the f1 clutch for like 10k euros with less than 100.000 miles. The guy said he changed the clutch last year. You think its a good deal? Should i get it? My biggest fear was the clutch
I am driving my 4th Maser right now. I've had 03' Spyder, '05 QP Executive, '18 Ghibli SQ4 and now '21 Ghibli S GranSport. I have never had problems with my cars... Yes. Depreciation is stiff but the joy you have with Maser can be definitely worth it.
Which is your favourite?
@@AdrianLeggettUK I loved the spyder. By back then, both QP and Spyders shared the same engine. F-1 Clutch was the huge issue as it got hot easily and would slip and replacement was pretty expensive. F-1 pump as well... I modified my QP with straight pipes and sounded the best. After current car, I am thinking about going back to QP. Ghiblis will not be produced anymore as Gracale will replace them. The only sedan Maser will have is QP. I am keeping my eyes on Trofeo...
@@briany1957 nice. I love my QP but spending a lot on it. I too replaced the F1 pump. Not nice when it goes as you are literally stranded. Due a clutch soon but it has done well.
Thankyou, welcome!
Well that deserves a like and I’m only 30 seconds in. What an exhaust note!
Just bought a 2013 Granturismo Sport. Already booked in at Sports Italia and cannot wait to get it on the B roads this summer. I’ll drop you an email nearer the time to see if you’re interested in taking it out
That’s a great car
They are 6’4” wide which gives you 1” either side on a London width restriction, the one on Hammersmith bridge I loved to take at an illegal speed and never hit the mirrors, had mine for 8 years and love it, and the button thing I got over after a month, the noise and punch I still have yet to
Awesome car. I always wanted a Quatroporte as a youth. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Love the shirt, love the choice of car, love the down to earth opinion, … this is by far one of my favorite channels
Jay man I discovered your channel about 2 years ago and I just have to say its very easily earned its place in my must watch list. Every upload I am there now lol. Excellent quality content. I'm 33 and so I'm probably of the same age group so sometimes you say about the gran turismo days of the old playstations etc. I can relate. Only thing is I don't drive! I've been obsessed with cars from an early age and love racing games and go karting but now finally this year I shall learn to drive. Verrry much looking forward to it! :D
I hope it turns out to be everything you wanted!

Finally the review I was waiting for. Thank you. I personally would also like to see a review of a modern (ish) attainable Ferrari, the Scaglietti 612. Not a good looker but great value for money and rather practical..with a great soundtrack.
I wouldn't. Stop promoting it. We're only pushing the price up. 😂😂😂
@@Tential1 Hopefully he will review it , not like it at all and the prices will crash..:P
I'm working on it....
The 612 is a big car. Big presence parked up
I bought a 2018 Ghibli S Q4 and absolutely love it. Have had no issues at all but i also have a bumper to bumper warranty so the "break downs" don't really matter to me.
Thanks for your opinion
I want a Quatroporte and this review is very supportive and very informative carry on
Jay, I'm digging these cars again. Thank you for your honest appraisal.
My dad still drives his 2010 Quattroporte GTS to this day. Epic sound and beautiful interior.
The expression at the beginning. No words say a thousand words. Just brilliant intro.
Sounds so good I can hear it over James’ shirt.
Great review and I love these ownership reviews. To sum it up, I would have one too.
Awesome sound capture vs inadequate sound for your Lexus GSF review. These QP sound good as they pass by. If I let go of my GSF, yes, I’d be looking at QP where existing Mas mechanic knew car and approved as daily for enthusiast.
For me it's the noise. It sounds special even when it's around a corner.
Also: best shirt ever!
The best looking 4 door ever made. Why have the Granturismo when you could have this! The best of Maserati 👌
I love the rhythm of James vocal delivery. I love that Maserati too. It sounds so much better than a flat plane crank Ferrari to me. Pete 🇬🇧
By definition a rare car
I do like your critical analysis and perspective thanks.
I want one.
I agree, she is a beautiful woman with a Ferrari soul
The heated seats were an option because they eliminated the stitching in the seat centres. I would always go online and spec a yellow one with black wheels and yellow calipers and the all black cabin with yellow stitching (and the all-important MC line extended carbon fibre) and if I ticked the heated/ventilated seats box, the yellow stitching in the seat centres would vanish, so I unticked it every time.
Sadly nobody seems to have actually specced a real one in these colours for me to buy used now.
You are right about the numbers in the U.K., it’s about 107 4.7s and 46 2008 4.2s
Hi my 3200gta will match it any day for sound and performance
No need to speak, just play that funky sound mr Martin
Great balanced review
Beautiful car (hasn't dated) - character - nicely gangster - sounds amazing. Don't see many on the roads.
Yup, scuderia car parts becomes your best friend 😂
That’s if the parts in question are still available to order… :(
I enjoyed your comments on the Quatroporte. I own a 2009 Maserati Granturismo S with the 4 liter engine. I love driving it but it only has 30,000 miles on it. It is still gorgeous and runs great. I always drive in manual mode.
Hey George, There never was a 4 liter Granturismo. The base model has 4.2l, the S is s 4.7l.
I need one of these in my driveway... I will never grow tiered of that exhaust note.
Love your descriptions with included history and items of interest. Well done for saying that how fast on the track is an irrelevant. As an ex racer, I know the slowest of road cars will reach the national speed limit so its the experience that matters
Life is a better place with cars like this ! Fabulous.
I think Crank was the word replaced with exhaust :-) - Great Video, funny car.
What an awesome, genuine and authentic review. Your car is stunning, I don't know what I like more the facelift of your generation or the 2014 version, my significant other has a 2014 GTS and it is badass, I look forward to the cold start every morning, which I'm sure my neighbor's despise LMAO
No issues so far just some minor suspension work, but the dealer did mess up the windshield seal when replacing one and water leaked into the interior through the dash messed up the electronic shifter plus who knows what else.....Currently at Dealer ugh
Do it
Give it a go!
Brilliant video as always James, you just keep getting better and better. P.s this exhaust note is simply like an orchestra. 👌🏼 Vint-tro
I watched for the car however you have a talent for presenting and reviewing and i will look forward to your next venture.
Love my late model 4.7S. Fast, handsome and - believe it or not - reliable. Regularly drive round Europe and it’s incredibly fast and comfortable on the A roads and then highly enjoyable on the last few miles of twisties
I have owned a granturismo sport 2014 for nearly a year now and done about 4000 miles so far with no issues. Nice cars
Maserati is an acronym for might also suggest extendable rope and towing implements
LOL! 0:20 Just because of that...Im subscribed now! no one ever should speak when that glorious engine is roaring!
I love this shape of Quattroporte I think now just right time to buy as prices will go up ⬆️
THAT INTRO WITH THE MASERATI THE SOUND YOUR SHIRT AND YOUR HAIRCUT WAS THE TAKIEST THING I’VE EVER SEEN BUT I LOVED IT 😂😂😂
Exactly Jay. Let the car introduce itself with that sound...
What a great car! Timeless beauty and character.
The surprise here is how much like the Disco Volante that Clarkson drove (with the same engine) the Maserati sounds. All that's missing are the occasional burble with pops from the exhaust. I believe the Alfas are million dollar cars.
The Disco Volante was based on the Alfa 8c, which was based on the Maserati GT, with the 4.7 engine that’s in this QP….
Owned a Q GTS for 10 years - been brilliant- and adored - its a keeper - modern classic
1. I want one. 2. Sounds fabulous. 3. Great review.
Would have loved to have seen that jag on the channel, one of the very few that I’m tempted by.
The opening is briljant…. As a Maserati-driver I can tell you: loose the Pzero’s! Buy Michelin Ps4s; you can thank me later😎 (great review, btw!!)
That New intro, gets a thumbs up 👍 form me.
Keep up the great work James!
I would very much like to know the name of the intro song, please.
Great review. I have 2006 QP with Duoselect. A fantastic car. Sounds awesome. I’ve never spent so many £’s on a motor in maintenance.
Have you ever tried the Duo select in comparison to your ZF ?
They seem to get a slaying in reviews.
Regrettably no, but I have yet to encounter anyone who defends it!
@@JayEmmOnCars That would make a good, easily achievable video. There seem to be a lot of negative reports, yet in there is a pool of reviews, saying it is an exceptional package.
On a personal note. Thank you for the reply and thank you for your superb output.
I have heard some people say that in manual mode with the shorter ratio gears and the transaxle setup, it is enjoyable to drive. Would love to see you review and compare the two versions side-by-side, James!
I have 2006 QP with Duoselect. I drove both this and the ZF and chose the older 2006. It’s a great car. I drive it in manual sport mode and it has 76K on the original clutch. I’ve spent a small fortune on parts but majority of these are common parts I.e. cats, sensors etc.
Jay, you gotta get on grand tour or that type of show. Youd be perfect.
Beautiful. I am glad you enjoy your Maserati, Jay.
