The Long Island Coin Hoard is an intriguing numismatic discovery that offers insight into early American coin circulation. Unearthed on Long Island, New York, the exact details of its discovery remain vague, but it is believed to have been found in the late 20th or early 21st century. Like many hoards, it was likely buried for safekeeping during economic turmoil, war, or personal distress. Some theories suggest connections to pirate activity, the Revolutionary War, or a forgotten estate.
Composition of the Hoard
The hoard contained American and foreign coins, dating from the colonial era to the late 19th or early 20th century. The mix of Spanish, British, and early U.S. coins suggests it accumulated over time rather than being buried all at once.
1. Colonial and Early Coins
• Spanish Silver Reales - Common in colonial America before the U.S. Mint was established.
• British Halfpennies and Farthings - Circulated widely in the American colonies.
• State-Issued Coppers - Coins from New York, Connecticut, and other early states.
2. Early U.S. Coinage
• Draped Bust and Capped Bust Silver Coins - Half dimes, dimes, quarters, and half dollars from the 1790s-1830s.
• Large Cents and Half Cents - Copper coins used before the rise of small change.
3. Mid-to-Late 19th Century Coins
• Seated Liberty and Barber Coinage - Silver dimes, quarters, and half dollars from the 1837-1916 period.
• Gold Coins? - Some reports suggest Liberty Head gold pieces, but this remains unconfirmed.
Historical Significance
The hoard provides a snapshot of economic history, showing what money was in circulation over time. Possible reasons for its burial include:
1. Pirate Treasure? - Long Island has ties to pirates like Captain Kidd, though their hoards were usually gold and silver bars.
2. Revolutionary War Stash? - Long Island was occupied by British forces, leading some to bury valuables.
3. Bank Panic Hoard? - Economic crises like the Panic of 1837 led people to distrust banks and store wealth in hard currency.
Where is the Hoard Now?
Most of the hoard was dispersed through private sales and auctions, rather than being preserved as a single collection. Some coins may still appear at auctions, though identifying them as part of the original find is difficult.
Legacy and Impact
Though not as famous as other hoards, the Long Island Hoard provides valuable insight into early American financial habits. It also raises the possibility that more undiscovered treasures remain buried across the country. As technology improves, future discoveries may bring even greater finds to light.

You have 10 new Morgans AND RUclips content....kind of a double-win! Thx for sharing!
I wish I made more off RUclips but it all helps haha
Thanks for your content.
Please consider adjusting the microphone volume, as when I clicked on your video, I had to turn my volume WAY up. lol
Next video I watch is gonna blast me.
I'm no expert either, but you should definitely know more of the regular key dates if you have thousands of Morgans...Very Nice ORIGINAL Bank Re~Roll from decades ago 👍🏼
I don’t memorize them because I know I can always look them up later. About the only one I have memorized is an 89 CC and 94.
That weird toned 1879 is cool. Looks like a blood trail from a head shot through the eye.
There's one born every minute
😃
That was a very interesting roll you had. Date wise it’s one of the better rolls I’ve seen but it seemed like a decent bit of the coins had some issues. I don’t know if the roll was legit or not but I think there definitely was a few better coins in the role. Hopefully the grading will pay off for you.
👍 I love Morgan Dollars! Best of luck to you on the grades.
Thanks! 😎
That Ebay seller seems like a giant scam!! They seem to KNOW which roll is going to be good or bad and you pay more accordingly. If they're "unsearched" .........how would they know. I think it's a giant scam and people keep falling for it. They sell dozens of rolls a day. How many rolls were in this supposed "hoard"??
I did some further research into this in the last few days and I think it is a scam as well. The Long Island horde had older coins. Up to about 1850s. So having a bunch of Morgan dollars probably wasn’t part of it.
There are as many rolls from this hoard as there are people willing to get scammed. If they are unsearched, how do they know how to grade them?
When will you goofballs ever learn not to buy online... I despise anyone to cheats or takes advantage of others.
But they know their market. And a scammer will always have customers...
1895 0 is great coin. It can sell for good money.
Never buy any Morgan rolls, 100% recenty rolled
Cool vid, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Definitely some better/semi key dates in that roll but I question the condition. I don’t know what you payed but that would play a huge part in determining whether it was a scam or not. It was fun watching you go through them, we appreciate you brother!
0:50 pretty cool....edit 6:11 yeah looks like a scam
Why would a department store label their coin rolls “Supreme”?
Bummer. Even watching the vid, seems like you can see the fine scratches of a poor cleaning.
I think it’s all relevant based off what you paid, but I never heard what you paid for the roll so it’s hard to tell if it was a good deal or not.
I paid $1700. The coins were worth about $1500 on a good day. So I overpaid but again, hold onto them long enough and they’ll be worth it.
@@rockysramblingsnot necessarily
My thought is, what is the upside for the seller here? If there is money to be made it’s almost always off of the last person that buys the roll - the paper could be authentic but repacked. I’ve bought rolls of packaged Morgan’s too, it’s a fun chase.
The buffed ones were a letdown. The roll looked like one end was opened and recrimped.
I'm not a numismatist (more of a stacker). But... those Morgans looked pretty darned nice to me. I may have missed what you said you paid for them, but I'd sure love to have that set.
@@byteme0000 maybe I’m just too picky lol
IF you think somebody sold this without knowing what's in there. Uh NO.
1895 o and you said it's not a good roll?
My thoughts exactly 💯
Thank you for your service o7
I wonder if that is a die crack not a scratch on the nice 1881?
It’s a scratch. It digs into the coin. The video can make a lot of these things misleading
1895-O was a good score.
That roll paper looks like it's been opened numerous times.
1890s is worth a bit more as well
Hey, I'm from Long Island
that is not a scratch on the 1881s its called a dye crack
You definitely have some fakes there.
The same company you purchased those rolls from also own SEGS. Scammers
KDC Coins auctions these rolls off all the time. I got a couple myself.
How were your results?
1895o is a winner
can you repackage it like it was? if so thats all the proof you need.
Get them tested on a sigma
1879 o is better date too
I like the 1896 O your 53 grade is light might be a ms60
I hope so! I’m not often accused of under grading lol
how much did you pay for this .. the 1895o is worth $300 by it self
lol the roll was $1700
Your grading opinion seems a littttttttle far fetched
🤷🏼♂️
You lost me at ebay.
I'd rather spend $1,700 on one really nice graded Morgan with a CAC sticker!
Yeah I often question my choices and think the same thing
$170 bucks a piece OUCH.You got took.Reminds me of the little ton subscription I had.Major rip off
SCAM...
No way You’re grading conservative ! You’re pretty liberal when it comes to your grading and how much your AU coins are MS63 or MS64 lol give me a break 😂
Man I’ve sent in a lot and my grading is pretty close. Yeah my old ones were bad cuz I was new to it. I’m usually within 1 grade now
It unrolled easily. How long ago were they rolled? Why would anyone write morgan on the roll? Did they know what was in it? I think someone had a lot of junk silver to sell. Why would anybody clean some coins before rolling them.
It does seem suspicious
another ebay scam roll, this guy is dumb as a box of rocks, LOL , The amount of money i've watched him spend on ebay scams, he could just buy the coins already graded and have a killer morgan collection,
Where’s the fun in that?
1881 die crack. 40 dollarcoin. Youre gradin is way off.. no, none are even ms sorry, be real
🫡
Cleaned, cleaned, super circulated, buffed, buffed, cleaned, cleaned, buffed buffed cleaned. Jesus you got ripped off if you paid more than 35 each. Sorry bro. At least you got content lol
I don’t think it’s that bad but still not worth what I paid 😅
