This made me realize how there aren’t many modern-retro racing games. In a market full of indie RPGs, rogue likes, platformers, etc, this feels really refreshing to see

    • @guyvandermire4146

there are a handful of retro racers available on the nintendo switch that are worth owning. the gentlemen at switch up informed me of almost all of them. at the end of this comment I will provide a comprehensive list. first I must inform you that the term you are looking for when you call games roguelikes is rogue-lite. I do not believe that there are any roguelikes available on the nintendo switch. I could be wrong. regardless, if there are any they are very few. rogue-lites are the popular sub genre these days. please do not be offended. I do not intend to be a snob. It is just is a pretty large pet peeve of mine when people call one of my favorite sub genre/genres by the wrong name. going back to the topic, two racing games instantly come to mind as being both retro inspired and worthy of your dollars. those two are hotshot racing which is a spiritual successor to games like virtua racing and other arcade racers, and road redemption, which is a spiritual successor to the road rash series. unfortunately road redemption is also a rogue-lite. it is an s tier rogue-lite on my rating scale and it is the only motorcycle racing game worth owning in my opinion on the nintendo switch. hotshot racing is an s tier arcade racer on my scale and is the best non kart racer arcade racer for online matches between friends on the nintendo switch in my opinion, and the single player is just as brilliant. alot of people including mark and glen here are big fans of horizon chase turbo. I bought it upon their recommendation at launch but still haven't gotten into it much. virtua racing has an excellent port on switch as part of the Sega ages collection, as does outrun, two classics that are must own, though they are retro ports, not new games. I do not know if you want those on this list, ao I figured I would include them. I also do not know what your criteria is for whether a racer is retro or not, so I figured I would mention a few others. riptide renegade gp is the closest to a wave race spiritual successor that is available on switch. it is a great game and worth your money even if it does not come close to the game it is aping. grip is a successor to a game on ps1 that I forget the name of. I have not played it too much but I am pretty sure it is solid and worth the buy. I would consider hot wheels unleashed and need for speed hot pursuit remastered are both fantastic. they are both technically modern arcade racers, but considering that nfshpr is a remaster of an older game then it could be considered retro, and hot wheels is simply hot wheels. nuff said haha. fast rmx is another successor to a ps1 game that I forgot the name of. great game, arguably retro to a certain extent. xenon racer and rise: race the future are two more arcade racers worth owning. I just figured i would inform you of arcade racers worth owning for the console, in case you consider them to fit into the category of retro racers. for that matter, kart racers would also be included, the three worth owning being mario kart 8 Deluxe, crash racing: nitro fueled and sonic team racing. I should also include the remaster of cruis'n blast for nintendo switch which I believe is the only title on this list besides the kart racers that is available physically for the Nintendo Switch. it is not my personal favorite style of arcade racer, as it is a bit loose and casual for my taste, but I believe it is worth your time and money if it is yours. I should note that the menu music is one heck of a banger. as for slipstream, I just pressed buy. now to play and decide on my verdict. thanks swichup!

@Ro Bear I am pretty sure that from my research, if a game has any cross run progression at all, it is a lite. a like would be a game with no cross run progression. random generation does not define terms, but rather is a trait of both subgenres. if I am wrong, provide evidence. as for the list, huh? I provided it.

I also find it curious how fourteen people have thumbs upped your comment that contained falsely categorized games. it really bothers me how many people call an entire sub genre/genre by the wrong name. a glorious sub genre/genre at that!

Burnout 2: Point of Impact - its 20 years old this year, so I guess it qualifies as a 'retro racer' right? It's arcade racing at its purest. Speed, turbo boosts, checkpoints, pumping soundtrack, tight controls, rewarding near misses and lightning reactions required. One hell of an adrenaline rush (quite literally) from start to finish. Plus watching the spectacular, crunching, slo-mo beautiful consequence of your mistake when you crashed was as equally satisfying as it was frustrating. That fine line between reward and error was perfectly balanced, encouraging you to come as close to a head on as possible for the pay off of NOS boost, gaining you valuable milliseconds to gain ground on your competitors. This game was never bettered IMO.

The sense of speed on this is really impressive, and I love the retro look
Could it even usurp Horizon Chase as my go to arcade racer? I won! UK
