Horizon Chase Turbo, Hotshot Racing, and now Slipstream..it's nice to have new versions of Outrun games even if Sega isn't making any of their own.

I don´t think Hotshot Racing is "new version" of Outrun, it´s more like a Ridge Racer. 80´s Overdrive shoul be in that list.

I buy every game like this; Horizon Chase is the king getting so much of my time, and it's from another Brazilian developer. I've grabbed Slipstream on both Xbox and Switch to support the genre. It looks awesome!

Excellent. I may have to pick this game up. The music in it sounds like stuff you would hear on the NewRetroWave RUclips channel. They're loaded with music with an 80's synth aesthetic!
Considering that Outrun originally coined the music style, this is intentional.
Outrun is so associated with the retro wave genre that Spotify call their own retro wave playlist “Retro Wave / Outun”.

Outrun, Sonic and... Brazil? The shadow of when you win at 6:17 is from the legend, Ayrton Senna. And the scenary of the stage at 3:40 and 9:48 is based on the historical gold mining city of the 18th century from Minas Gerais state, today called Ouro Preto. The name of this city by the time was Vila Rica, which is indeed the name of the stage in the game. Cool! 🇧🇷
Bought right before this video dropped, was between this one and "80s Overdrive" bought this one because it was a Brazilian game. (I am from Brazil) and anyone trying to do any sort of artistic endeavour in this country right now deserves all the compensation they can get. Happy to see it getting some coverage. And you always try to point out both the positives and negatives of any game you cover in a fair way and I am glad you justified my impulse buy. I do disagree partly on the rewind button point. I don't mind those options existing I just always wish that they were disabled when you start the game, and that the player could choose to enable them if he wanted.
Horizon Turbo too was. Cool game.
I like the long no pop in draw distance and smooth 60 fps of the sprite super scaling. I love seeing classic sprite animated style games made for modern hardware.
the art and the soundtrack was absolutely amazingly beautiful, I love this game.
The shot of the guy holding the trophy is without a doubt a crop of F1 driver Ayrton Senna holding up the Sonic trophy from the 1993 European Grand Prix.
If you want a more crazy arcade racer then try Cruis n Blast or Rise Race the Future, both worth a race or two. Now if only the developers would try their take on Road Rash. Great review as always.

Great review! It looks and sounds awesome especially for a one person team. I will say that when you talked about how people in their 40's would appreciate the music; so would people in their 30's.
@@superbroly64DS I was going to say people in their 20's as well, but I was overthinking it. Yeah, people in their 20's and 30's love music from the 80's.
I'm so glad this finally came to switch. i'd been playing this for so long on PC watching as it changed with each update, and hoping others who really enjoyed Outrun 2 (because of the drifting and drafting (called slipstreaming here)) but want the Outrun 1 aesthetic would get to try it. I ended up buying this also on the switch because it's such a cool game.

Been having a great time with this game. My only minor complaint is some of the tracks don’t really give me driving vibes. A bit too omninous like hotline Miami. Still, overall love it as I grew up in the 80s.
This game started vaporwave AF, but the VCR tracking effects on the time rewind feature are just... *chef's kiss*
Bro got hardcore “ we do it right the first time or we don’t deserve it” thing is I’m 55 and my reflexes aren’t what they used to be. So I’m thankful for rewind. =p

Slipstreaming is a term I have heard used for when you use the cars momentum in front of you to gain an extra boost. But the term used by actual racers is "Drafting".
Either way ... the game looks cool. I just saw an Outrun inspired indie title on the XBox called "Overdrive 80s racer" or something like that. I was thinking about picking it up because the reviews from gamers was 4/5 stars on the XBox.

Yeah was looking around if there was anything like outrun tonight and came across this game, I’d never heard of it. It’s super fun. Especially with the CRT+NTSC filter and the VHS effect. Even more fun playing with my son couch co-op style.

Siip stream is also the name of the Last súper scaler arcade game From sega. Released only in Brazil in '95.
My favorite part is that the title car is clearly based on the Nissan 300ZX Z32 model, which is my favorite car. I also see a 3000GT and an NSX.

So great to see someone doing a proper full modern super scalar. It's a retro feel that hasn't been redone much, even though these were some of the most amazing looking games of the era
I like that the rivals are all 80's movie characters and celebs. So far I spotted Gordon Gecko, Bob Ross, and Doc Brown.
As someone who sucks at racing games in general i actually love the inclusion of a rewind feature, its not hurting anyone who doesnt want to use it. As you say here its good accesability.
I know what you mean as I also suck at driving games but it's there and will be very hard to resist using.
The need to improve and actually learn is taken away.
Probably included under the advice of the publisher.
@@lordsofkobol7385 I dunno, I use the feature in emulators all the time. But at that same token I have played all the souls like and have over 300 hours in eldin ring, not adverse to challenge. I don't mind the feature being there, as long as it's optional.

Another game that's dropping soon on July 26 that I think you should definitely check out is 80's Overdrive! It looks just as good as Slipstream and heck it might just look even better! Of course we won't know which one is until this comes out. But it has a light car customization using coins you unlock to upgrade the engine or steering etc. It also has a track editor which is pretty interesting to say the least. It's also only $9.99, hopefully it turns out just as good Slipstream if not even better!
Initially the game didn't have the rewind button, but the other drivers used a rubber banding system to keep them around you. The 1.2 patch added the rewind but also got rid of the rubberbanding and made all the other drivers have the same rules as the player, which meant that if you messed up an early turn or something, you were pretty much boned, even a late one might see half the other races pass you by. The 1.21 patch would tune the difficulty so other races were quite so brutal and smoothed out the turns so you could take them at high speed a bit easier.
I doubt rubberbanding was ever fully removed. Scaled back maybe.
@@PowderedVoltage It was actually fully removed in 1.2 but that ended up creating a bunch of difficulty issues and the dev added it back in 1.3 but tuned it more so it felt more natural (ai driving a bit better behind and a bit worse ahead) rather then like in most games where the ai will almost stop if its too far ahead.
Not quite chip-tunes but reminiscent of the 16bit music era, graphics are like a mix of 16bit to early 32bit.

Outrun 2 its probably my favorite racing game ever, so i need to try this game.
This game has a retro look with modern day mechanics built in.
This just makes me want a port of Outrunners even more.

Sega has just unveiled the Mega Drive 2 mini with CD player add on!
I did a review of this game for Pure Nintendo. It's an enjoyable little racer, but does have some big problems. One of the bigger ones for myself was that the AI on the harder difficulties was very sporadic. Sometimes I'd just blow past everyone and they never caught up. Other times they'd blow past me, and even at my max speed they'd still be gaining distance. The slipstream mechanic itself is really well done though, you can gain speed forever until you stop slipstreaming allowing you to reach some crazy high speeds
The core game mode, Grand Tour, is the main mode of this game because of its reflection of the Outrun model. The draw is the joy of driving, with the rivals just there as simple benchmarks to overcome. The additional racing modes are all secondary, and while I enjoyed them, they were nowhere near as appealing as Grand Tour. That relegates any AI issues to the backburner for me. The MP is the real competitive racing mode, anyway. The core Outrun experience is there and done exceptionally well. And really, that's all that matters in single player.
Now all we need is a Afterburner clone
I hope it gets a physical release. I have been enjoying this in my Xbox for a min, but I would buy a physical release for the switch and keep it nice and sealed for the collection
The graphics are great, the gameplay looks spot on but, that music, oh that music. From a gamer who is almost out of his 40s, this music puts me in the mood to play more than anything at all. For a moment there, I was 16 again, or 13, either is fine.
@Sega Lord X Sega just announced they're working on Sega Genesis Mini 2 in Japan and including Sega CD games as well.

Horizon Chase Turbo is another retro but it uses polygonal 3D to mimic look of 2D sprite scaling and was inspired by the likes of OutRun and Top Gear on the SNES right down to getting Barry Leitch to do the music. Its Senna Forever DLC was likely inspired by Super Monaco GP too.
Horizon Chase is good but to me its very cheap. Its very hard to pass the other cars because they dont give you a lot of room. I couldnt complete the game because it got too cheap on the later stages and theres no option to change the difficulty.
Oh yeah...this is coming home ASAP.
This might sound weird, but I want a Sonic game like OutRun.
Seriously, just imagine him looking at the screen, giving you the "clock watch" and then it says "GO!" and you have old school sprite designs in running fashion and have to dodge obstacles. Not like Sonic Runners, like OutRun.
So basically Sonic R with Super Scaler graphics (and hopefully better gameplay)? I think it's a great idea.
This was a game I backed on kickstarter, but I wasn't aware that it wasn't that long ago when the game had finished. I guess the version that was available on GOG and Steam for a while, might have been still in early access. Regardless, I'm glad it turn out alright and wasn't left abandoned or silent like some other retro style racing games I've backed in the past.
I may not be in my 40s just yet, but I can still appreciate the classics of the 1980s for what they are.

Because of "Sonic Origins" coming out this month, do you suppose you'll be able to do a review for the indie game title "Freedom Planet" soon? It is a 16-bit style action platformer that is heavily inspired by the old school Sonic games, and it was even planned to be a Sonic fan game before it was changed to become something new and original. If you haven't played it yet, I highly recommend checking it out however you can, since it is available on the Nintendo Switch as well as the PlayStation 4. :)

Wow-a stunning homage to a bygone era. While I’m a little more in favor or something like Horizon Chase Turbo, this is an incredible sprite scaler for the modern age. Great find!
It is also 10 usd on steam, but steam says it came out in 2018 there. Must be a new port to the switch\consoles.

This game literally looks like the car is sliding as oppose to rolling. Slipslide would have been more Appropriate lol. Looks alright.
I bought this because it kind of reminded me of outrun a bit but have still yet to play it.
I bought it for the PS4 & love it. I don't care if it can't get out from the shadow of Outrun. I wish there was an Outrun anthology release.
Not sure how I didn't notice this one before; scrolling is nice and fluid; it's mostly Out Run but the roads in motion have a hint of a Ridge Racer look as well. Very agreed about the rapidly repeating scrolling assets; that aspect gives it a cookie-cutter presentation at times but overall this seems to be a good value purchase and playability and music are both satisfactory. Now if Nicalis could just revive and finish 90's Super GP someday in the not too distant future. I'm also interested in Redout 2 but I will have to build a beefed-up gaming PC to accommodate that as mine is now eight years old.

I wish these retro style games would support steering wheels. People keep saying arcade racers don't work with wheels, but how does that make any sense? Steering wheels (AND force feedback) originated in the arcades!
It's pretty good especially for the price!
It has that nice pick up and play quality. My complaints are similiar and found the music to be a bit too kitschy but otherwise it's decent.
I hope Sega takes notice and finally releases an official arcade port of Outrunners though and maybe add a new new contemporary features besides the dumb rewind button. C'mon Sega you already have an amazing game with lots of potential. My apologies for mentioning Outrunners again I just really really want an official arcade port!
If only the car didn't go into a sideways drift constantly with every basic turn I would really love this game. That's my only complaint.

I've really been enjoying Horizon Chase Turbo and 80's Overdrive (which has a great synthwave soundtrack) and I've had this on my wish list for a while. Might have to finally get it.
I saw this comment and thought I had 80's Overdrive but I couldn't find it....Finally realized I have that one on the 3DS. It's cool, I love the graphics but it doesn't have a very good feel to the road effect.
If there is any motivated developers this could be also run on any dreamcast machine!Glad i‘ve downloaded this Gem a few weeks ago for Switch,never regret it!

I really love this game,but as lord x said this game needs some variety in assets in stages.A waterfall there,a landmark somewhere else...With that it would be a 9,5/10 in my book
