  • This comprehensive video provides instructions and an overview of the HOLDEN TENT tarp configuration, pitched in snowy conditions under the canopy Pacific Northwest old growth. The presentation fully covers the utility of this particular set-up: Its versatility, how it might be modified, and the benefits of an open-faced design (especially in winter).
Complete step-by-step instructions lead you through the set-up process for this open-faced, front-peaked shelter. In this video, we are using a square (10' x 10') AQ Defender Tarp, but you can use just about any square or rectangular tarp to achieve the Holden Tent configuration. Other required gear is: 1 vertical support (tarp pole, trekking pole, or branch), 5 stakes/pegs, and 1 length of cordage, around 7 feet in length. Note that you don't require any trees to complete this pitch (though variations of this pitch can employ trees for support). If using a 10' x 10' tarp as shown, you will create a comfortable space that fits 2 occupants and their gear and/or dog! It has three solid walls, with a triangular open face that offers good visibility and works well for gaining heat from an exterior fire, if you adhere to common sense and safety fundamentals.
We also have a YT Shorts video (1 min) of this Holden Tent set-up, if you wish to only view the basics at a quick clip!
The video features our AquaQuest Defender Square Tarp (10' x 10' or 3 m x 3 m) in our proprietary Boulder Camo. This model is our heavyweight tarp, which uses 70D nylon fabric with TPU and DWR coatings to create an industry-leading waterproof rating of 20,000mm. You will find that the Defender is renowned for its strength and performance, and is an essential piece of survival kit for tough conditions or extended trips in the bush.
AquaQuest also makes 3 other models of tarp, and offers 5 different sizes: Whether you're gearing up for a nimble solo thru-hike, or need a burly backcountry basecamp for you and your buddies, we've got your brand of adventure covered!
AquaQuest, established in 1994, is the brand that is WATER PROVEN, and with our waterproof tarps, bivies and shelters, you need FEAR NO FORECAST.

The Boulder camo is my personal favorite colorway! Even when concealment is not a factor, I tend to reach for it as I just like the way it looks. Thanks!

Very nice and comprehensive tutorial Scott 👍 Always loved this setup. Simple, quick, and the open front allows for views as well as a fire to watch. Keep the great vids coming brother 👍

Ive got their heavy tarp and a half dozen of other brands as well. Its my favorite of all of them except for its weight but still think its worth the extra weight. I forgot the name of the camo pattern I got but its mostly different shades of brown. I like it because in the winter theres very green in the Ozarks and it blends in with the forest pretty well. Its not bad in the summer either since the ground in the woods have a lot of browns because of all the fallen leaves.
I bought a camo net the same size as the tarp and together it blends right in.

Using a tarp is absolutely my last option when intentionally camping in the winter. I do love aquaquest products though.

We of course support personal preferences when it comes to camping... whatever gets you out there enjoying the outdoors! But I think that for the versatility, portability, and price point, you can't beat a tarp for winter camping. Though, I admit then when the weather is raging, a nice 40 lb. wall tent with stove would be pretty sweet. But I ain't carryin' it!

@@AQWaterproof Definitely a better option than a 40lbs tent. Love Aquaquest. Thank you.

Great job, Aqua Quest - on your products, as well as these valuable tutorials. Excellent presentations. I have the 10X10 Defender, and I also picked up one of the waterproof map cases for my topo maps/navigation kit.. Going to pick up the 10X10 Safari soon, to sheer a considerable amount of weight while hiking to camping spots. The Defender is quite heavy, but damn tough. Best heavy weight and best medium weight tarps on the market - Aqua Quest hands down!

Thanks man! We appreciate your business, and love your feedback. The Defender is indeed the stongest in our tarp line, but I bet you will be impressed by what the Safari has to offer!

Are only some of the tarps 70D ripstop nylon? Or are there colnes being made? I just received my safari tarp and it doesn't look like the same material of the ones posted in the aquaquest videos

All AQ Safari Tarps are 70D nylon, with SIL impregnation on the outer surface and a PU coating on the underside. If you are concerned about your product's authenticity please reach out to our cutomer service for help: 1-844-775-7770. Thanks!

So I've got a 3x2 Guide, will the Holden configuration work for that?

    • @AQWaterproof
      @AQWaterproof  7 месяцев назад

Yes, you can use a rectangular tarp for this configuration. You could also make some adjustments if you're having issues with the length for sleeping by setting up an asymmetrical pole.

Sometimes these videos take a sideways turn... we had planned an 11-minute shoot for this topic but upon arrival to our scenic and remote location, we found it fogged-in and under 4 inches of slush... so we retreated to the woods and just ran with it... mouth ran a bit too I guess! Gotta laugh at yourself when things literally don't go to script! ✌

After receiving damaged AQ products twice I would never deal with this company again. As for their "lifetime guarantee" products arrived with no documents whatsoever not even contact details for AQ. Fortunately we purchased from Amazon or we would have been left with a pile of junk.

Sorry to hear of your negative experience; that sounds frustrating for sure and is certainly seems an unusual circumstance. Rest assured we back AQ product purchases through authorized sellers with a lifetime warranty as described on our website: ca.aquaquestwaterproof.com/pages/lifetime-warranty-new
