- Graduate were an English new wave and mod group formed in 1978, in Bath, England. They were only very mildly successful, and broke up by 1981. They are today best known as being the initial recording vehicle for future Tears for Fears members Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith

@My RUclips Comments Are Now Shadow Banned Glad you enjoy the strange mix of videos I upload, many more to come. Nice to hear from a viewer in NZ.
Great video. I still have graduates album 'acting my age' I don't suppose you've got sparks appearance on the old grey whistle test in your collection?
@@johnwalsh128 Sorry to say I do not have their OGWT appearance, wish I had. Thanks for watching and commenting.
*I know that AllMusic lists Graduate as a new wave band but going by this song they're more like power pop band.* Like J. Geils Band, Big Star, The Knack, and Cheap Trick. Tears for Fears is definitely new wave. I wonder if they realized power pop was only getting them onto kiddie shows and decided to get on the new wave scene.
This is great - thank you RUclips algorithm 😅
I was in the audience of this. Cant believe they are now my favourite band.
That's so wild!!
Back story please. How’d you end up there?
@@tylerthompson1842 I lived locally to the studios and they asked local schools to play and attend. Great fun and great memories. I still have my badge.
And Curt and Roland didn't live to far away either so it was all very local.

Funny how .....time flies...
Nice one😊

what a classic "head over heels"
So true 😉
@@ysteinnordli7988 in my minds eye, one little boy one little man, funny how..... time flies my friend.
Although the band was created in 1978, this video is actually from 1980, in a TV performance, with this song "Ever Met a Day" on the children's program Runaround for Southern TV, in Southampton. It was in this year that they released their first and only album, “Acting My Age”. In 1981, Orzabal and Smith left Graduate and formed a band called History of Headaches, which they soon changed to Tears for Fears.
It was also called Neon for a short time.
cool
TY! ❤
@@kylej.mcelravy. Neon was actually a band they played with that essentially became Naked Eyes.
Nice history lesson there. I was thinking no way TFF sounded like this, and now that makes sense.
Looked like they were moving in fast motion. So young and full of energy. Great Iconic band.
Should see them now, Curt Smith looks the same more or less, just a bit older. Roland Orzabal looks like a wizard from Middle Earth these days.
@@oxyman10 👌 🤝
Yep, looks sped up a bit
Speed is a helluva drug
@@oxyman10Roland Looks like an Hermit now. Should have a haircut and a beard trim. Roland I would volantary cut ur hair for free.
Very XTC-ish. From a kid's show to global fame. Well done boys!
It’s funny how the kids really don’t get what they’re hearing.
Definitely XTCish. Great moment. Roland is going off!
XTC at this point were much more frantic and angular.@@vandalorianvandalorian4769
Wow, so true. I was a big XTC fan in the early '80s, only knew Tears For Fears from Songs From the Big Chair, and confess that I didn't pick up on the influence. Here it's so strong.
XTC-like, that's exactly what I thought.
Was thinking exactly the same, but you beat me to it.
Didn't know they went back to late 70s! Just shows you, all the Great 80s bands like Simple Minds, Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins, Tears For Fears, so many! They didn't just appear overnight, they put the years of work in, gigs, writing, creative focus....they forced their way into the popular culture of the 80s, and made it great for all of us!👏
They weren't called Tears for Fears in those days. That band broke up.
Thompson Twins!
Great bands? 😅
Absolutely.
The boys were, maybe, 19.
Think about that.
Roland's musical genius is so stark.
I don’t know whether to laugh, cry or just be amazed. What a captivating clip from the past! To think they went on to create Songs from the big chair, Sowing the Seeds of Love, and Everybody Loves a Happy Ending - my three favourite TFF albums
How could you miss out The Hurting which I was playing yet again this Afternoon where Roland wrote about of his and Curt’s Traumas while growing.up
Awesome Debut album that I bought the day it was released in 1983.
It is quite funny. I agree that Everybody Loves a Happy Ending is a brilliant album. Love the Hurting as well, but I think it's one of their best. Hope it gets a vinyl release.
LOL. I feel the same. Although I would replace happy ending with Elemental.....very powerful album with some very powerful well produced songs.
It’s as if Men and Work and The Police had a mutant love child. Amazing they survived.
Men @ work. FFS
A mix of different styles: Beatles, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Jam....very interesting. The talent was already evident.
Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂
Thank you for appreciating. @@ScottishTeeVee
They were completely under the spell of Elvis Costello most of the time.
And add some Roxy Music and early Ultravox
@@superbug1977 Nah, they were huge Genesis and prog rock fans as well. I can hear Jethro Tull in this too. It also sounds like Australian rock band _Men at Work_
Tears for Fears came a long way from those days. I never knew that they started in the late 70s. I always thought they started in the early 80s.
What a fascinating and creative band they became. This is a treasure of a video. Thanks for posting.
Those two, they're going to be big someday
The flautist and the show host? I agree.
Wow. Then suddenly, the flute played itself.
The magic of television 😅😅😅
F*** the f***** flute and sodding TV. It's all bs!
It was the resurgence of the Magic Flute from H.R. Pufenstuf😂
This band was called Graduate from 1978-1980ish
disbanded then Roland and Curt started Tears for Fears
And the rest was history .. saw them in nyc at the beacon Theatre in the 90’s. Best concert I ever attended.
Roland and Kurt are amazing songwriters, performers and musicians! This was great to see 😃🤩
Amazing bit of archive. Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for commenting and watching
It's unbelievable!!! First they get introduced by Eastenders stand up comedian Mike Reid!!! Then when they appear Roland and Curt look like they are in the Elvis Costello band!!! Amazing TV performance!!! 🙂🌞🌻💛🙏
Ha! Mike Reid.. "Janine, eat yer toast.”
Pity it went right over the kids' heads..
Rrrunnnn around now!
What am I? Some kind of double-yolker?
This is a fantastic trip back in time, the broadcast quality is amazing. The way Roland and Curt are playing and dancing is aggressive and punk in attitude. It’s a million miles away from the cool stage persona they had when they hit the big time with their mid 80s ballads and stadium anthems.
Punk, not even close. Disco…yes.
@throbbinwoodofcoxley6830 no, totally wrong beat for disco. Thank heavens.
They got lazy.
Boy, those kids were certainly a, um, perfunctory audience.
What a cool piece of history. They all look like they auditioned for post-70s blondie and got rejected haha. Definitely groovier and more cheerful than most tears for fears stuff, thanks for posting.
There is a photo of Curt and Roland at an early 80s King Crimson concert, totally enraptured. That explains how the went from this basic musical structure, to the more complex Tears For Fears arrangements.
My Dad was one of the directors for Runaround. I remember watching a couple of episodes from the audience. I also remember he described Mike Reid as difficult to direct because he had no patience with the kids taking part 😄
I can imagine him effing and blinding under his breath.😂😂😂
I could have sworn the host was Allen Ford!
Will you fkin kids sit dan
Somewhat unintentionally funny with the kid audience appearing more or less oblivious and unable to clap in time and then the piped-in sound of children cheering ecstatically at the end. Also it is quite nostalgic seeing Curt and Roland side by side when I was 13 years old and yet destined for greatness about 12 years later. Thanks much for posting this little gem of a time capsule.
The music is piped in as well
Are kids that age able to display sarcasm. Even having been that age myself, I just can't remember.
I have to admit: my watching of this video was also piped in.
Goddam they chucked their whole nervous system into their performance
😅Comment made my day😅
Do you not?
Wow! Never heard this song before!! What a rare treat!!👌😎👍
What a great treat🥴🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣it’s terrible…it’s made my day chuckling at this…so in that respect..I agree👍🤪
I've always liked Roland's singing style. I mean the way he was singing with determination.
Wow! I’ve never seen this before, thanks for digging this up😊
I'm glad you watched and enjoyed this video Brian
Jesus, now I can't stop listen this one 😂😍

Me neither I'm stuck now 😂 first i thought okay it isn't my favorite song but it's not bad and now i love it 😂
this is the 3rd time I've listened to this song in 24 hours lol
For a pre-Tears song, I enjoyed that. Great catchy tune.
Catchy little ditty from the late 1970s.
This song is so cahtchy, and the moves are epic lmao
Thanks for watching and commenting John
This was before they were Tears For Fears, they were called "Graduate", they tried their hand at being a mod band, like The Jam.
The TV show was called "Runaround" and was a kids show, presented by comedian and later EastEnders actor Mike Read.
Yeah and it was 1980, not 1978!
glad they changed it up , this song crap , but mad world and everybody wants to rule the world masterpieces
y6722 Agreed. I'm also a big fan of Mother's Talk.
Oi, turn it in, kids!
Runaround, starting....Naah!
@Mark And I’m a big fan of Mother’s Milk…
That just blew me away as looked like mods but playing Folk Prog Rock with a New Wave attitude to a Priory school audience...wish thay stayed like that for a few more years.
Very interesting. Xtc meets the jam and throw in the beat too. Glad these 2 found their way in the 80s
Bloody hell. I used to watch Runaround after getting home from school. Loved that show. I grew up in the Bath area and of course knew about Tears for Fears but I didn't know about Graduate. Very interesting bit of music history!
Used to watch Runaround myself after school. No idea they were in this band .
I remember that .What was the one where kids had to pik up cabbages ?was that runaround?🤔🙂
@@davidtomlinson6138crackerjack. The double or drop segment was the bit with the cabbages.
This band was the bomb in the 80s. Glad to see their first TV appearance video.
Graduate?
In 1978, the world was not ready for what this band would become. They were hip enough to popular tastes at this point to know that they could connect with the audience better by playing guitars instead of synths, but their way with a song was already in full bloom.
To be honest, it was the 90s before I was willing to admit how good they are.
I love this rare early video. Thank you for posting.
I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂
@@ScottishTeeVeeThis is 1980.
@@beds139 On YT the more comments a video gets the more YT promotes it to others, so if I put in a very obvious incorrect detail, people jump in to correct the mistake and they comment, where as they would never have sone so before. The result being that this video has had 40,000 views inside the last 3 days and 125,000 inside the last week.
It.s not TFF...The name of the band was Graduate... with members of new bands when they disbanded..TFF and Naked Eyes

Roland and Curt so cute in this! The kids in the audience stayed glued to their epic movements!
You can see the Beatles influence in the outfits and hairstyles😄 If it weren’t for the description I probably would not have known it was Curt & Roland. Classic!
Thanks for watching and commenting
I can hear the voices of Tears For Fears in this clip! Very Well Done Guys!!
have the 10" album on vinyl and is one of my treasured belongings. Found it at a local record store (ska category) in New Jersey of all places.
So that’s where my copy ended up!! 😂
Curt is killing it on the Bass!..
He's always killing it on the bass
its playback
Even at 17 yrs old in this clip, Rolland and Curt had it all... those guys were and still are pure talent!!
Catchy as hell!! Gonna stay in my head for days now!!
Thank you for uploading this, it's great when people share these, it's my first time seeing it
the guy playing the flute and the tambourine is obviously the only one who had a garage that they could practice in
Hardly recognized them. They embraced the Gary Numan look! Nice little pop tune.
I always thought Gary Numan looked like a Mod but with Synthesizer's
So Ringo used to play the guitar at some point in the beginning of the band! Just Wow! 😮
Wow they were so young and adorable here!
Thanks for watching and commenting Carol, I hope you enjoyed this rare clip
I like the self-playing flute at the end!
Oh man, it took me a second to realize that Curt Smith was on the bass! And that's Roland all over that stage. Yep! Well, there they are, TFF in the making. Wow! TFF is in my top three best bands of all time, to me. Love it! Wow!
@ronniedoorzon1576 "Everybody wants to rule the world" and "Shout," of course. There is plenty about them to admire.
I saw them in concert, once, in Reno. What an evening that was. They had just released their "Everybody loves a happy ending" album.
Some commented on the crowd being confused. If the Beatles came out with Sgt. Pepper in 1963, people wouldn’t understand it. Timing is sometimes as important as the music itself.
I'm reminded a bit of Nine Below Zero in this, with a hint of Ian Anderson. Catchy tune, too.
Yeah I can see the NBZ look and the flute is more Ian Anderson than any other band
i'm entranced by how angry/intense that lead vocalist is, he's performing at an entirely different level from everyone else in that room.
Wow, Roland was into it!
Yesss
Would love a cover of this song from Franz Ferdinand
You got me on this one 😂
U r 1000% correct ! ❤🎉
wow, nailed it. love you
SOUNDS LIKE IT WILL EVOLVE TO AN 80s SOUND.
Holy cow! I had no idea they had even formed that long ago!
45 years ago, it's almost scary🤣
@@ScottishTeeVee seems they has other récords as another band
@@lorddiosliving They were also part of a band named Neon that had two other members and when they split, they formed Tears for Fears and the other two formed Naked Eyes, another amazing 80's band.
Look at those Scottish kids in the audience how enthusiastic they are!
Amazing, never seen before.
From the ashes of this band two multimillion records seller was born... the most famous tears for fears, and the electropop duo naked eyes.
Awesome.
I keep coming back.
This is amazing. Never seen this before. I was a huge TFF fan (especially The Hurting album) and so was my sister, Growing up in the United States we couldn't get our hands on this kind of stuff but thanks to RUclips AND this uploader I get to catch up on all the stuff I missed. Never thought I'd get to listen let alone watch Graduate live. Thank you!
They weren't live though.......2:57 Suddenly no one played the flute.
wow, that's a way to get exposure. grooming the audience to awesome music for life. so cool to see legends in their humble beginnings
I can’t stop singing this
I think i remember seeing this coming back from school one day! Wouldnt have remembered it was Tears though!
I wish there was more swaying in this performance. It could use more swaying.
Conversely, it has just the right amount of cowbell.
Already the signs of greatness are here, and it's unsurprising that the band "graduated" with first class honours to even greater heights!!
Roland had that intensity! Destined for greatness!! TFF is my favorite band.
"They do get better" Rufus, Bill and Ted
This is really out of left field. A penpal of mine introduced me to Graduate, then I saw TFF live in the mid 80s being all cool and polished following the release of Big Chair, and one afternoon I walked past a hotel and saw Curt and Roland getting into their car, there was Head Over Heels in the Donnie Darko movie and Seeds of Love playing in a store everyday where I worked , one of my major fave musicians Steven Wilson has worked with them and I watched a live BBC concert a little while back when on hols and my flatmate has most of their stuff now. They've been following me around for decades! And fine cos they're not a bad band at all! My fave song is Sea Song. Btw, big shout out to all my old penpals from back in the day....we used to write a heck of a load of letters about TFF, there was a massive worldwide TFF network then in the 80s before the time of Social Media. We found a way. Happy days! 😻
Hello good afternoon, do you know what happened to the other members of this band?
You can hear elements of TFF in this through the vocal delivery and Roland's spicy delivery 🙂
i thought dude with the flute was gonna bust into a men at work solo for a sec....
The legend Andy Crane on the drums.
It looks like him, yes, but he'd only have been 14 in 1978. He was a radio presenter first and in the late 1980s he became a children's CBBC presenter. The drummer in Graduate was called Andy Marsden.
Ha wow that’s a name I never thought I’d remember.
Roland and Curt have the mod moves. I didn’t see them dance like that in Mad World 😊
They must have been fans of The Jam back then, hence the comment on Seeds of Love.
Great even as adolescents, Roland hurting hisvoice box, and Curt taking over on vocals, 30 years later great move Roland.
I don't remember ever hearing Roland hurt his voice box, so forgive me but I must ask? What is your source on that bit of information? I think they pretty much both sang throughout their time together, and of course have recently reunited.
@@cjmiller6741 About 15 years ago his voice was shot for a while. Seems to of improved and they have probably dropped the key of some of the tracks as he's older now and his voice will be lower.
@@markw8825 I didn't even know they were performing together 15 years ago. There was a major falling out and the two vocalists went years without speaking to each other. Of course, I don't have a timeline of the band's history. So what do I know?
I can’t quite get over this... It’s so fun and catchy! TFF are my favorite band, and I knew absolutely nothing of this earlier venture. The in synch moves are to die, total Beatles maniacs moves!
You don't read up on your heroes then.
The Beatles weren't a bunch of spaz's like these dudes though.

This is great to see . Never knew they were in a previous band. Even then Roland has stage presence.
I like this better than their famous songs.
My first gig as a teen where Tears for Fears and it was excellent
Better than most Tears for Fears songs
Great song, never heard it before.
