- Welcome to another Car Caves episode, where The Late Brake Show explores people's interesting car dens and garages. Episode 2 visits Alton in Hampshire where Vernon Hibberd gives Jonny his private tour of retro Fiats stashed inside a workshop, punctuated with large luxo-barges (Buick & Merc coupes and Daimler XJCs).
Vernon loves a bargain, and cannot resist his fetish for Fiat Panda 4x4s - the go-anywhere '80s Giugiaro mountain goat. He has 10 4x4s and a total of 30 Pandas - many of which live in his 'Panda pen' basement storage area beneath a barn. Jonny packs a torch to see what lurks inside there at the end of the episode. Check the chapters for all the cars in this Car Cave.

Absolutely love this series, and the rest of the Late Brake Show's productions. Thanks fo rtaking time with the stories and showing as much of the collection as you reasonably could. There's a lot of viewers out there longing to have some of those cars but also just the space to acquire collections of their own. Seeing someone with a passion for one Make but still enjoying lots of others reminds me that there's still a long list of vehicles to acquire... just gotta work on the money, space, opportunity stuff! Thanks for so many treats in one video, loved the variety and learning more about cars that until now, I just admired casually without really discovering.
Best thing about the seat camper is the period fairy bottle😂
Agree. It was half full too.
@@TheLateBrakeShow Little Timmy is still waiting to make his rocket and he's 35 now.
@@TheLateBrakeShow Did it have the classic original fairy liquid smell?

I had a much modified 128 in the 90s and it was a giant killer that would go around the bends like a go kart,I used to shock my friends and other car driver's as you would never have thought that it was never capable of what it could do.i miss that little red devil.
Did it have a part vinyl roof and a 1500 engine?
@@johnchurch4705 no vynil roof on it.
Fiat's occupied the first 12 years of my working life from 1977. Seeing the 850 sport coupe and 1283p brought back some happy memories. I worked in parts and can still remember stocking panels for the 3p. 4353521 and 2 for the doors and 4351331 rear panel......
Pandas were great cars but I never connected with them as much as 127s, 128s and 124s especially the 124 special T. That said, it was great to see such an enthusiast for a much derided marque.
CarPervert, Tyrrell, Harry - I'm being spoiled this evening
not to forget Retropower
And a Smith & Sniff podcast to boot. We are spoiled.
The white FIAT Panda at 8:05 am, I had a red 34. MGM on the license plate are my initial. What a wonderful collection. I was a mechanic at FIAT for over 14 years from 1988 to the end of 2002.
That Mk 1 Panda looks like new 30 Pandas he owns wow loved the Fiat coupe as a 21 year old in the 90's owned many Fiats in the 90's and 00's first was a Mk 1 1983 Uno 45 ES Super back in 1992 a 1000cc 1990 Mk2 Uno in 1997 a Mk1 1994 Punto 1.1 SX in 1998 and a 1999 Punto TD SX and a Mk 2 Punto 3 door diesel from new in 2003
This is probably my favourite RUclips video of all time. I'm a genuine Panda fetishist. I live in the south of Italy, so I see Pandas like this every day. I've had all kinds of adventures in Panda 4x4s, been to villages where literally 70% of cars are Pandas (and another 15% are 126s), and I have a giant poster of a Panda on my bedroom wall.
I'd quite like to have a pint with this guy.
👍🏻 you deserve to see the video "Pandelleria" dedicated to the wonderful island where almost the cars are Pandas
What a guy!! I had a Lancia Beta 2000 Spider in 1998 and currently daily drive a 1995 e320 W124 Mercedes
We’re all eagerly awaiting the video to show off the panda 4x4 you’ve bought from vernon.....
When I was a child, we had a 128 3P in exactly that colour scheme. I loved it. It was superb, until the engine lost all its oil one day, made some unpleasant noises then deposited most of its bottom end behind us in a long line of metal fragments. That was the end of that. Shame. Marvellous scar. They make a great sound. Watching this brought back so many childhood memories. Thanks!
A fellow fiat fanatic. I learnt to drive in a 127 mk1. As of today, I've had a dozen, including the newer generation of panda, an 04 in yellow, obviously., and a panda 100hp. That car was a uk show car 2 months before the official launch. I bought it 2 weeks later, still before the launch date. Also had 2 abarth 500s. Looking at a newer 4x4 panda 🐼 at the moment. Only have one parking space, so only able to have one at a time.
The 128 3P is such a good-looking car, from every angle.
I've never owned a Fiat, but I did once have a 1989 Seat Ibiza with a 903cc Fiat engine in it. One of the most fun cars I've ever owned, I wish I still had it.
Agree, the 128 3P seems to have been a seldom appreciated little gem.
It was considered the best sub-compact coupè of the year for a period in the USA
Some memories in that cave!! My first car that was actually road legal was an 850 Special - always wanted a Sport but never found one that wasn't utterly rotted away (and this was the late '70s), although I did put a Sport engine and interior into my Special :) I used to jump on the M1 at Junction 1 then nail the throttle to the floor and with luck, it would get me to junction 33 without having to lift. I still occasionally have odd, troubling dreams about working on or finding rotten 850 Sports.... Worked on loads of 128s, including the odd 3p but never owned one. Moved to 124 Sports after the 850 was sold on. Still have our '91 Westfield in the garage too :)
What a treat this was to watch. My Dad always had Fiats (127, 128, Strada, 131 Mirafiori, Uno, Tipo, Puntos) and I used to be so embarrassed being driven around as a kid. Then I had my own Panda at 17 and realised the appeal (apart from the baking tray doors and manual choke that I never mastered). I had a MK 2, baby blue, 1000 CL FIRE engine and remember feeling so superior to a mate that had a MK1 750CL with deckchairs in white just like Vernon's. Great production - thanks Jonny.
As an avid Fiat fan, this is my favourite Car Caves episode to date! The filming, production and chatter from Jonny and Vernon provided a fascinating watch. Great work!
I wish I could live in his Panda Pen forever and ever...
Me too, Daniel! 😁
Same as that! Bit of a Panda obsession, but wow, what a collection.
Love the panda 4x4, used to have a D reg one, always regret selling it.
Watches this then straight to the Fiat section of a well known auction site. I can't be alone. Thanks Johnny, this was great.
If you like the older stuff, there's been a few tidy looking 850 Berlinas listed recently. They're awesome fun in the wet!
Thanks Jonny. There's no doubt that Vernon has a Fiat fetish ! Not for me, but we had a 127 back in the early '70's . I called it the" Buzz Bomb " the faster you drove the engine would start hitting it's sweet spot .... 95 ish ! Sadly my brother had a pretty heavy accident in it and it never drove the same ! Did l see a generous rust hole above the headlamp on that XJC? Definitely on the climb ! Thanks Jonny .
No rot in the XJC but a hole in the Fiat 850 coupe.
What a hero!
What a collection of Gems. 70s and 80s RHD rust free Fiats must be like Rocking horse 💩. Thank you for another great video. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon. Could have been longer
Love seeing all those Pandas. I have a close relative (Lancia Y10) in the garage at the moment.
Lovely elegant car the Y10
I ran a FIAT 850 Berlina when I was at college in Bournemouth. Completely std. except for a big valve head - only about 40 BHP but on skinny crossplies on a greasy roundabout in the rain that was about 3 times the power required for completely sideways motoring :)
I've had two (proper) minis and the FIAT is by far the best handling car I've ever owned.
Another great episode, Jonny & co. Thanks..
This has really whet my appetite for the retro rides weekender next weekend. I can’t wait to go to a car show and take in all these little features that your camera man scans across. The 45CL reminded me of the burago model I had of one back in the late 80s.
Love to see these videos with ‘every day’ cars. My dad had a Fiat 128 and a 131 Mirafiori. Wonderful memories !!
The pandas bring back so many memories. As a child my mum owned an E registered 750 in light blue. At the time I hated it but now I would love to own one.
I came really late to driving and cars. 48 years old and learning to drive, and getting my drivers licence. . My wife insisted we get a new Fiat 500L.. (mainly for safety and design concerns ( she is a graphic designer ) It has been great for the kids but what I really wanted was a Panda. 4*4. Really appreciate your enthusiasm and the historical perspective you share of car culture.
My first car was a metallic blue 1987 Panda 1000s back in 1992. I loved that little thing and remember managing 83mph on the M1. Must have been downhill with a tailwind.
I grew up in the French Pyrenees and we had a Panda 4x4 Country Club (special edition) was absolutely brilliant. Remember my mum driving us up a shallow river just for fun..
As Spanish fiat owner, congratulations!
Was hoping Vernon had a Strada lurking at the back and a shiny X19 to round it off :) That was great, thank you.
Well, he had the engine and gearbox of an X1/9 in the 128 at least.
Fantastic. You could have easily done a good 20 mins on the pandapen without dragging it on, the time just flies on these videos! My dad had a H reg Panda Dance from new for a while and it was brilliantly simple, was going to be my first car but he traded it in for a Corsa instead. I made him get me a Mini as compensation! Used to see the Panda around for ages but it looked like it disappeared late 2004 sadly.
That little red Fiat 850 is an absolute peach. Especially love the look of the back end, such a gorgeous design. That’s definitely my pick of this brilliant litter. Very pretty!
That black and white Panda is so perfect, it must run on Bamboo...
Man, that 128 3P stiffens me more than a lambo would. I had a 20v Turbo Coupe back in the day too, something that also appeals more than a modern supercar. 5 cylinder adore.
20:00 My mum had a lovely golden yellow 850 - to be honest I never expected to see another. Bless her - she's been dead 40 years now, but what a joy to see an 850 again.
My mate bought a red one just like this when we were in our teens in NZ. I had a Simca. What racers we were!! His caught fire. Mine did not! But the Fiat was, and still is, just such a pretty car. I wish they'd make them again! With a wee hybrid. Love the dash. So cool.
Jonny is the encyclopedia definition of the *GOOD* *BLOKE* With the many rat blastards in motoring: In contrast, JS is the tops for sincerity! Great tour with Vernon. Thank you.
Many thanks Dee. We try to bring variety and appreciation to an eclectic mix of machinery here.
Totally agree Dee
Real trip down memory lane for me, had an 1983 Panda 45CL 1985 Uno 55 4 door and an 1988 Uno Turbo, the Uno 55 got battered in half by a black cab in Liverpool :(
Thought I was going to get wiped out at that point.
The Turbo became somewhat frilly in the doors, bonnet, sills and tailgate. Still holds the fasted journey time I had from Liverpool to Bristol 2hr 15 minutes!!
It was Christmas Eve 1996 and there was sod all on the road "Officer"
Absolutely love this series. Unique, informative, enjoyable. I love the way it’s presented in such a calm way and the guests are left to tell their own story. Brilliant. Thank you, Jonny.
Thank YOU Danny. Welcome aboard TLBS.
I'm 41. From new, my mum used to have a factory squadron blue Panda 4x4, back when I was single-digits years old. We had fairly decent cars growing up, but I have fondest memories of the Panda.
Fascinating stories, cheers! 😎👌
I was waiting for a 131 super miafori to appear ( wish I kept mine now lol )... what a lovely den of pure indulgence ,to the panda car series.
Very passionate about all his vehicles and brimming with knowledge.
Great interview & thank you for sharing Johnny.
Yep me too. I had 131 2ltr twin cam racing. Reg BLU 699 Y.
Cool guy. I'm the proud owner of a 2020 Panda. Great fun to pootle around in.
In the 80s, bravely and adventurously crossing the Sahara in a County 110 on our way to Kenya, we came across a strange sight...WTF is that??? Turned out to be about 30 Pandas also crossing the Sahara on their way to Dakar if I remember!! PANDAS!! So we filched some goodies kindly donated from the ginormous truck accompanying them and drove quietly, humbly on..feeling not quite so adventurous...Great show Jonny. Love from NZ. Take care out there everyone!!
Saw the mk1 Panda in the notification bar and cried out like a child!
I worked with a guy who had just bought a new Fiat 128 3P, he loved the car. This was back in about 1977/8 I was a young man doing the rounds of the different depts in training! I got to meet lots of keen drivers of a wide variety of cars!
Another great video Jonny, thanks for all your hard work.
My Uncle had a Fiat Panda 4x4 (D295SMR) which he bought new. He used to pull a big American 7 berth folding caravan with it. A coleman Brandywine. It struggled with it, but he managed it. But I have always liked them. Would love one if one ever came up for the right price at the right time.
My neighbour had a 128 3p in Pencoed S.Wales, must have been around 1981. I walked past it daily for years and always thought what a wonderful looking car. Never forgot that.
1283p was my 1st car in the ‘92, was was pretty rusty even then... very fun car. Rev all day:)
I had a 128 sport and a 124 sport , great cars, speed was only limited by the temperature gauge!
I was lucky enough to own an 850 sport coupe just like that one. Great little. I always wanted one and i didn't know why. I ended up coming across the ladybird book of cars i had when i was a kid and a red 850 featured in the book several times. Sublimely trained to find one. I believe they where penned by the same guy who did the amphicar and the karmann. You can see it in the boat like front end.
I have fond memories of my 1972 850 Coupe and my 1988 Panda Abarth; wish I could but them back but they've both long gone!
You had a Strada Abarth? They are unicorns in Britain!
@@TheLateBrakeShow No, a Panda Abarth!
SEAT Terra camper! Loved my Marbella.
Camper of Terra!
So good video. Boxy simple reliable city car, Fiat Panda would also be convenient at country side !
When I did my paper round in the early 80's, I delivered to a house with a Lotus Eclat on the driveway and a metallic blue S reg'd Fiat 128 3p across the road. The Fiat was the car I swooned over. I think that was the last one I saw, until today. Love this series. Love Vernon's cars👍👍👍
Original FIAT Pandas, plus a genuine '90s Coupe *and* a '70s 850 Coupe? I'm in. Thank you to you both.
What a nice guy and diverse car collection - love it
That was a great watch, loved every minute of it.
My first car was a 1986, 5 door Fiat Uno 45 Fire - C706 FKN.
Bought it for £500, sold it two years later for a grand.
The only car I've ever made money on...😄
I love old fiats. Miss my unos, great cars with character. Pandas are now steadily climbing in price, especially the 4x4. Love it. Great video.
Love this!! Vernon is a really cool guy, I love how laid back he is about his impressive collection and an absolute fount of Knowledge on his cars. Credit to you Vernon for building this fantastic collection of Fiats plus others. 🇮🇹
The most important thing to me about this collection is the Fiat 850 Coupe. This was our family car in the early 70's. To us kids, compared to our previous early Hilman Minx, it was like a Ferrari. I love all the other cars!
Nice nice nice. More rare Fiats/ Pandas please Jonny. Great stuff👍🏻👍🏻
Oh my.., this video unexpectedly took me back.... My first car was a mk1 Panda, almost exactly like Vernon's, except mine was a sandy beige with brown and orange stripes. Wonderful to see his 'ark' of Pandas. And if he has a beige one with number plate XPE xxxY, I'll faint.
Almost bought a panda in the 80s as a first car but it was snapped up at auction so I ended up with a FIAT Ritmo 1979 65cl... that car was something that taught me loads about car mechanics as I was always fixing it or pushing it....
As a MKI 127 owner, I was hoping to see one in Vernon’s collection, but what a fantastic collection nonetheless.
For someone like me with a lifelong love affair of Fiat's, this was absolute heaven. I'm afraid I couldn't have left Vernon without taking that cheeky little white 45 with me 😂
All the right models Fiat I like! Awesome collection.
My mother had a 128 3P which I drove in the early 1980s. Terrific car.
Really enjoyed that👍 Vernon is a top bloke.
Served my time on them (Bodywork) and we joked they came across as deck cargo on Submarines . I liked the Fiat 124 Special T a Wolf in Sheep's clothing.
I liked the 850 Sports Coupe as well.
128/3p first fiat I ever had bought it from a young lady who had neglected to have the cam belt changed!!..
One exhaust valve and a head gasket plus new belt obviously about £19 in total parts, and off we went marvellous little car would Rev until it sounded like the valves were going to jump out and do a little dance on the bonnet, never missed a beat in two years as my daily driver, sold it on when it started to get a bit too crusty around it's nether regions this was back in 1985 car was an S reg in dark blue .
Great, great vid Jonny. So many fab memories. I went to work at a Fiat dealership in Somerset in the late 70's. I've driven and sold all the great 1970's and 1980's models from 126 to 130 saloon and Coupe. One of our mechanics, as a garage project to tow the 124 Spider rally car, converted a Transit mini bus 12 seater to take a 3.2l Fiat 130 V6 and 5 speed box. It went like stink, totally unique. I loved 127's with their fabulous 903cc engines that would rev to kingdom come. We used to have a rental operation and the fastest 127' s were ex- rental ones because they had been thrashed! Sold lots of 128 3P's and 124 Sports Coupes - 1400, 1600 and 1800 engined. The 1400 were the best looking. Took in some wonderful p/x models too as the dealer was also a Reliant Scimitar and AC (3000 ME) dealer.
So many wonderful memories in the days before accountants ran dealerships. Ours was run by a wonderful Welsh car enthusiast called Jonathan. Happy days, brought back to me by your wonderful video. More please JS.
Jonny these Sunday evening videos are an absolute joy. They are just the tonic that I need as I try not to think of Monday morning. Far better than watching the Antiques Roadshow. Keep up the good work.
Chuffed to hear that Paul, many thanks for appreciating the episodes. There are so many car stories to tell, so if the viewers keep coming we will keep bringing the content.
Fiat Panda 4x4s are simply the greatest cars ever. Fantastic video as always!
Really enjoyed that, I did a road test write up on a Panda 4x4 in 1980’s
That was Pandamonium. Great stuff.
My first car was a Fiat 850 Sport, loved that thing......always lusted for another. My second (& third) was a 128 3P. Loving this episode
My first car was an 1982 Panda 45S, great car! This video brings back so many memories.
Thanks Johnny another great treat on a rainy Sunday
I'm almost as relaxed as Vernon now after watching that . Most enjoyable .
Im ready for the next pub quiz
That FIAT Coupe is bang tidy😍
He is bonkers, but having had a series 1 panda as my first car, I would gladly join him in the Fiat Asylum!!!. Super film!!!
Awesome! I think if I had a storage facility that size it would also end up containing a far few old Fiats, too. I have a Punto Cabrio at the moment and love that.
What a guy, I would love the 20v Turbo.
Me too. I've been looking on the Internet since we filmed this Cave.
These car caves and barn finds are serious quality petrolhead viewing, many thanks!
I visited a house for sale here in Piedmont, Italy and the elderly owner has a Panda Young in her garage covered up with 50,000km on it! It's like new. She''s promised to give me a price on Friday. It will be a great promotion car for my videos. Thanks this video - always great work, Jonny..!
Very nice! When i was young i always did drive in Panda's and also Marbella's, almost new cars back then. I loved those cars! There where driving a lot here in the Netherlands. Now they are gone. Gone from the streets, even gone from the scrapyards. I mis the little cars 😢.
I do want the Volvo ES. Such a beautiful car but i want the tiny camper van more🤣 I'm loving this vid Jonny. Let's see your sleeper Allegro soon please mate. I'm loving your channel.
Allegro update in a few weeks or so.
I like that Westfield, from when they were simple little sports cars, not nowadays when they give them too much power and they have to be track focused.
Cheers Jonny and Vernon, what a treat. :)
This is absolutely fantastic. Great viewing.
Car people are so weird. 30 Pandas 😂I love it.
My first new car was a red Panda Dance, bought in 1991 for £4592. Still the old 903cc gubbins, and the removable interior. Had it for 6 years. Garish interior though. Loved that little car.
That is an awesome collection. The Punto and the Coupe are my pics but it's my teenage era. A friend has an LE but I think I've missed the boat now that coupe prices are on the up.
So many fantastic cars there.
I spied a few interesting stickers, a club I'm a member off and I've done Festival Italia last year and booked again with my 500 this year. I will have to keep a look out.
That xjc. Such a pretty car.
I'm sort of pleased the Panda is getting recognition. It was my first car, a 1987 Fiat Panda 1000. I bought it in 1996. It might even be in that garage! Because I have had some dreams over the years that it has been kept in a garage and I take it out and drive it. :D
Didn't know there was a 2 cylinder Panda, what a sheltered life you have had! 😂 My Panda I gave up with the rust and it was recycled before it was 7 years old.
To be fair the UK didn't get the Panda 30.
Neither did Sweden, and still know about Panda 30
Great stuff! If I had space I'd by lots of FIATS too, love em. As it stands I've got two.
Utterly brilliant these cave tours
My wife started with a Fiat 126, then a Panda, then a 4X4 panda which could go anywhere, none of them cost more than £1000, but all lasted a long time, and were such easy maintenance.
Love this collection so much, especially the Volvo and Pandas - the Buick and Fiat Coupe is by far my fave although that original Panda is utterly wonderful in it’s simplicity of design and it’s originality! But they are all fabulous in their own way, the camper is so cute! What an awesome chap! Variety is the spice of life! Huge Volvo fan but I would have all sorts in my lottery win garage, pretty much as oddball as his! Really great video as always Jonny!
