I’ve read so much and found so many podcasts and nothing has affected my life as much as you have. I am very grateful I’ve encountered your podcast and book in my 20’s.

    I want people to be interested in me. I was not being myself (and not loving myself). I now try to be interested in people. I get to know folks (still a work in progress) and I am learning to be myself. Now I am really finding out who I am.

    Great Drew “You don’t end up free you end up lost”. So true👏. Also one more thing about endless option. It may be exciting in the beginning. When you start hitting middle age it can actually become quite boring. You start to have the same experience but with different people or jobs. The only way to not get bored is by choosing 😊

    Mark, you really helping me during this vulnerable state of my life at present.
    The values and importance of Respect, Trust, and Love is actually I am trying to explain to my boyfriend but unfortunately he crossed many times of my boundaries.
    We love each other but I think his confidential job is not a good fit for me. He is a good man though and he taught me a great lesson being with him. 💔💔💔

    A Great way to get MEASURABLE results when attempting to build Charisma and Confidence is to get a SALES job.
    5 months ago I was an extremely introverted and slightly unlikable perfectionist that avoided talking to anyone at all costs. I was offered a car sales job and told myself that I HAVE TO become good at it and I’m a better person because of it.

    Mark, years ago i listened to a brilliant E book (translated into german) that imprinted me and helped me through rough time. I even made notes and summarized content of some of its chapters. Now from comment section i now do recall... it was "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" ! Weeks ago i accidently stumbled upon this channel from you, the author (without even realizing it 😄)

    When Mark, Tim Ferris, Andrew Huberman and Chris Williamson all have children, they should have a podcast about optimization and self-improvement, it will be fun. It is nerve-wrecking to try to optimize what is essentially impossible to optimize.

    I have been trying to avoid to read the subtle art of not giving a fuck. Then after a while I really liked a video in which a guy gave a most realistic yet positive approach of things. Little did I knew it was the author of the same book I was avoiding😂

    My problem is anxiety is that I can identify that I have it, I can identify the cause of it, I can repeat to myself over and over that "it’s just my anxiety over nothing, Just let it go" but I cannot for the life of me let it go lol.

      "Subtle art of not giving a f*ck" book discusses in chapter 2 that your solving problems makes you happy and you shouldn't have victim mentality of thinking you can't solve them!

      Anxiety just multiplies when you try to stop it. You are clearly trying to avoid it, which in turn increases its intensity. So lad relax, feel it and try to live together with the symptoms. Trust me it worked for me and now am so much better.

      I found recently that going against your anxiety is the way to get over it or at least make it less and less.

      That's because you're making all these efforts to get rid of it. Anxiety will go away once you stop trying to make it go away. In the same way, you cannot force yourself to sleep, and stressing out about not being tired only keeps you awake more. It's when you stop trying you start relaxing and eventually sleep.

    18 minute mark: I 100% get what you're talking about there. I have been searching for a Life Partner for 4 years & after on and off relationships, finding the ONE has literally taken up SO much mental space it's been driving me NUTS. Can't wait until I can either switch this OFF and say f*ck it, or find HER and finally have peace about it & move on

    Use dialectics on the freedom topic. My experience as a 36 year old is that your preference and enjoyment shifts between breadth and depth at different times of your life. Breadth is typically enjoyable when going to find out WHICH depth is your choice.
    Making that transition is really the source of tension and transition to “real” adulthood, typically for most people when they get married or have kids.

    Mark, I show alot of your videos to my students & use alot of your material in my lessons.
    Have you ever considered doing school tours?
    Carrying on from this & the notion of Freedom: I completely relate to the remarks about specialising & expertise in one field. I too spent the better part of 20yrs in a single field which (until recently) pigeon-holed me from other options & (I originally thought) limited my professional freedom
    Utter horseshit it turns out - I'm now able to Do what I want in a field where people treat me with respect & reverence

    A key component of socialism is the worker owning the means of production and being paid fairly for their labor. It has NEVER meant not being paid for one’s work. Indeed capitalists are who are continually looking for ways to pay workers a little as possible while squeezing as much labor out of them as possible. I just think it’s important to clarify the terms. Otherwise, I’m very much enjoying the conversation about depth of freedom vs breadth of freedom. The description of what those mean was very helpful. Thank you.

    The "Backwards Law" could also be seen by tenets in the Bible. Jesus's says in Mathew6:5 And when you pray do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. Also in Philippians 4:11-13 I am not saying this because I am in need. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength. It so interesting how you tie it together in this pod. Great content!

    I wonder if almost all of these relationships would just be better expressed as a bell curve.
    It would be hard to argue the sentence "the more shy you try to be, the less shy you appear to be". But rather "there comes a point where you act so shy that it's perceived as independence" or even "aloof".
    Many more examples obviously, but I would say literally any action can have a diminishing return, because the energy and speed at which humans move is finitite.
    There is a point where one spends so much time and effort on physical health that their mental health can erode enough to cause physical ailments.
    So, perhaps the question is more about how one assessed where they are on the bell curve and what that bell curve even looks like. How does one do that?

    Another area where less effort is more would the stock market. Actively buying & selling stuff all the time yields worse results than simply holding an index fund. In fact, no mutual fund has outperformed the S&P 500 over a 30 year period. The more you tweak your portfolio the worse your results most often.

    If we had true freedom when we drive, no rules or road signs, it would be chaos and we wouldn’t be able to get anywhere without a high chance of crashing or hitting a person. But with the limitations of rules of the road, we gain the freedom of faster and more efficient driving. Freedom does not always mean being completely free of all constraints. It’s a logical fallacy that is used quit a bit, especially in political cases with market fundamentalism.

    Hi Mark, Thanks for your content. I get that trying too hard to optimize happiness can make us feel we're not happy enough. But I'm conflicted-my routines help manage my interests (music, writing, sports), yet sometimes stress me out because I feel I'm not doing enough.
    Should I abandon my routines to be happier and less anxious, or is there a way to adjust them to avoid this pressure?

    25:00 or so, (love). Define love. Many of the examples used are not love. OJ thought he loved Nicole. But really he invented the Nicole he needed and projected that onto her. He loved the projection, and when he was denied he killed it. Wife beater's often say they love their spouse. But under the covers they know their behavior is shitty and this fills them with shame and/or self loathing. Split and project: They project their shame/self loathing onto her and it "deserves" what it gets. But the beaten wife, like Nicole, is not experiencing love.

    Kind of reinforces my idea that most masculines are just looking for the best sidekick they can snag and then ignore that column. The settled marriage stuff is... not really relatable. And as an unhappily married person it feels like overcompensating to hype up settling. The freed RAM space thing happens when you are happily single too. Before I was married I got rid of the distraction of endless possibility by imagining every hot person was surrounded by all their family. Bc every person no matter how hot is a group deal and that immediately takes the power out of their hotness lol.

    These two remind me of Anthony Robbins whom I followed for years until I began to see patterns of subtle manipulation. They could make anything sound interesting. What was the topic again, O yeah anxiety, got a bit off topic but still the sheeple in the comments can't get enough. Super intelligente, charismatic, educated, powerful and rich white males who rehash ancient stoic and buddist wisdom and make it interesting, relevant and profitable. Congratulations on reaching cult like status! Not a single dislike in over 2 million views.
