For a solid 5 min I was putting the sunglasses on normally, covering my right eye with my hand, and wondering how this could possibly achieve a 3D effect
You can replicate the same effect by partially covering your right eye and looking through a narrow gap between your fingers. I recommend trying it! It works better than the sunglasses method.
I'm a damn moron. After being amazed that this actually works, I tried to check if it'd work in real life. Took me a moment to realize real life is 3d. Dammit.
I used 3D cinema glasses to cover my right eye. Turn them facing you, then tilt at 60 degrees. You'll see your LCD monitor get dimmer there. You can control how much is dimmed by tilting more.

I work in 3D stereo conversion and sometimes we'll force that frame offset in one eye -- it's called a temporal offset! It only works in panning shots just like you covered, but whenever there's an object that moves outside the smoothness of the pan such as a character or vehicle moving about, or even you waving your arms while you talk, it'll break the effect in that one spot and look kinda wonky. Pause the video. take off your glasses. You can see the image is a bit distorted, then put your glasses back on. you should be able to see clear & sharp image, free from distortion and video free from dizziness. Cheers!
Also, make sure you put the glasses on the right eye (edit - i meant the correct eye, which is in this case in fact the eye on the right). Otherwise the 3d effect will work the other way around, pushing the objects in the background to the front. Your brain will then quickly reject this because it doesn't make sense, realize something is going wrong with your vision (which will not be helped by the spining camera, which causes your vision to be misaligned with your balance senses), assume it is because of some kind of toxin, and attempt to eject said toxin from your body, probably using the same path it would have come in through.

holy crap, so it IS a thing! I was searching up, why I could pop a lens out of cheap real d glasses from the cinema and see my monitor in 3d, but I couldn't find anything. This is awesome
I also tried looking at this video, while almost closing my right eye, and it did actually work! Not brilliantly, but since I currently don't own a pair of sunglasses, it's the best I can do. Also, I am indeed currently lying in bed. How did you know...
Since the 80s I’ve been using precisely a pair of sunglasses without one of them to watch music videos. Haven’t done it for a while as I have a 3D enabled 120Hz gaming laptop and electronic nvidia studio 3D glasses and lots of GoPro 3D glasses and a couple stereoscopic devices. But when I watched this video had to get up from bed and remove one of my tinted goggles and try it and it made me live again those moments in my youth when I discovered the effect accidentally, used it for years and evolved to a full 3D production environment.
if people still have trouble getting it to work here's a few things -Put the quality to the highest there is in this case 1080p 50fps -make sure where ever you are watching this its nice and bright -Have the sunglasses cover your right eye since the video is moving from right to left. dont cover both eyes bonus point I'm gonna need a bucket to to watch this again
Extra tip: if you're using polarized sunglasses, rotate the lens until you find the place where the polarization angle matches the light of the screen, optimizing the effect
I once stopped walking in the middle of the street during winter because there was a ray of light peeking through the clouds down to where I was. It was shocking how warm it was, and how cold it was when I stepped out of the light.
@@MrPeterK91 Ah yes, that also work. The trick is to reduced the amount of light coming in one of your eyes. Any technique will do and some are more practical :-)
There was a music video by Seal which also used this effect. The VHS came with glasses which had the right eye darkened. I can't remember which song though, sorry. There was also an episode of "Third Rock form the Sun" which did this too.
Yup, it actually works. And my right eye hurts. The bokeh effect (high pixel on Tom, and low pixel in tree background) actually help to distinguish two layers apart. So you can see the 3D effect.
Tried it. It sort worked very briefly, if I held my eye nearly shut and looked through my lashes. But not nearly as well as it worked when I finally borrowed some sunglasses.
Closing your right eye slightly and keeping your left eye as open as possible also creates this effect. Ever since I saw this video a year or two ago, whenever I see a shot in a movie or show that pans slowly I try this out haha. And it works surprisingly well!

ONE TAKE!
"Wait did i go the right way there?"
He just wants you to believe that.
if people still have trouble getting it to work here's a few things
-Put the quality to the highest there is in this case 1080p 50fps
-make sure where ever you are watching this its nice and bright
-Have the sunglasses cover your right eye since the video is moving from right to left. dont cover both eyes
bonus point
I'm gonna need a bucket to to watch this again
It also works at 720p50.
It worked for me at 480p, unknown frame rate, on the Android mobile app.
It worked for me in 480p, on Android, unknown framerate, in the dark, by squinting by right eye
Extra tip: if you're using polarized sunglasses, rotate the lens until you find the place where the polarization angle matches the light of the screen, optimizing the effect
Do i have to buy sunglasses??
I can’t wait for 3d cinemas to get really cheap, and just start handing out dark monocles.
It is the 20s again
wearing surround sound headphones and listening to Tom Scott run around me yelling one take! was quite hilarious.
Aren't all headphones surround sound?
Someone needs to do a compilation of tom scott yelling "one take" in various videos
Me: wow that was a coo-
Tom: ONE TAKE, ONE TAKE
ONE TAKE!!!
I like how this replaced Doctor Who on the #1 Trending...
And yet still has Doctor Who footage in the video
Not to mention the Doctor wears sunglasses
Tony David True
This is so cool, thanks for making it. Also kudos for doing it in a single take and not editing 1 million clips together like most RUclipsrs.
Cocaine is one hell of a drug
Muhammad Alfudhail no, just no
chico never do heroine and you’ll be good
Syrtech
If you smoke heroin, then wait a bit, you'll experience something called 'heroin effect' it'll make you invincible

Who else doesn't have sunglasses with them and cannot enjoy this cool trick... :/
*Welcome to the club*
Phoenix wouldn't dream of leaving home without them.
If you can manage to squint one eye enough to darken the image slightly, it works a bit.
If you wave your hand rapidly over right eye, it also produces the effect.
Weaboo
I just really don’t want to get out of bed
There is something nostalgic about Tom happily telling “one take!” at the end of his videos
My pair of sunglasses that's missing one lens: my time has come
WHY WOULD I OWN SUNGLASSES IN THE UK. THE SUN ISNT A THING HERE.
It was sunny today though you must be Scottish
I once stopped walking in the middle of the street during winter because there was a ray of light peeking through the clouds down to where I was. It was shocking how warm it was, and how cold it was when I stepped out of the light.
It works just fine, by making a tiny gap between your fingers and holding it right in front of your right eye :)
It's been overcast where I live for the last 5 days. Rule Britannia.
What do you mean, you don't have Snaptacles?
"assuming both of your eyes work"
Me: **crying with one eye**
I feel your pain
.(
Same.
@@NitheshVG734 🤣🤣
Like this - 🥲?
I feel dizzy af now...
me: lying in bed squinting at my phone
“you look ridiculous”
He posted this in winter when all of the sunglasses are hiding
Not sure if trolling or serious
Had a pair of sunglasses next to me, tried this...mind BLOWNNNNNNNNNNNN. WOW.
AntVenom you're here?
MatrixAce_ no
AntVenom doesn't matter if its polarized or not
If you have an LCD screen then you can rotate the polarised glasses to make it even darker
Oh my
To the poors like me who don't have any sunglasses near them: You can just half close one of your eye and it will also work. Cheers!
For me half-closing eye did not work such great as using a black dense comb :)
@@MrPeterK91 Ah yes, that also work. The trick is to reduced the amount of light coming in one of your eyes. Any technique will do and some are more practical :-)
Thank you!
Thx😂
Deosnt work
6 years later this still the best piece of content and information that yt has ever presented.
Works so well, I almost got dizzy from the rotation :-)
It's irritating to watch 3D with fast movements.
It's irritating to watch 3D (movies).
Jw
it's irritating to watch 3d in slow frames in fast movement. When I watched the hobbit in 48 frames it just felt natural
+EmilGlockner 99% are converted so it's not really 3d. They're not even well converted
Just realised i don't own any sunglasses.
Midwest Drake
WOOMIED
There was a music video by Seal which also used this effect. The VHS came with glasses which had the right eye darkened.
I can't remember which song though, sorry.
There was also an episode of "Third Rock form the Sun" which did this too.
Heyy
Hey ami!
Narsyri riims
the human eye can only see 30fps though
Blox117 lmao please tell me you're joking
Tom Scott's videos are a genuine mix of perfect mentally invigorating speech/scripting and humbling curious subjects that keep you watching
RUclips: I'll allow this.
Also RUclips: I'm going to compress this video into oblivion as well.
I think, they didn't decrease the bitrate, but the video should be like this for us to be able to see in 3D!
"You can take your sunglasses off now."
"OH OKAYYYYYY"
And if you do do that, you'll miss the cool 3D effect on the video suggestions vs. background.
ONE TAKE!! ONE TAKE!!
Shar Co Q-cards? Maybe..?
Shar Co I laughed when he said it so happy 😁
Thanks for spinning the camera angle like that throughout the whole video. I've always enjoyed throwing up.
You are one of those rare RUclipsr who really is worth interesting, not a forced one.
This video made me dizzy!
Jericho & Thunder The 2 Gray Cats no it didn’t. To be dizzy you need to me moving in circles not seeing something move in circles
Dima - I'm not too sure about that. The background was spinning, just like it would be if I was the one going in circles.
Nope 3D become 3Dizzy.
Exactly!!! 🤒🤕😰
Me too! :(
Squinting one eye actually did the trick for me!
People without sunglasses, do try it out.
"You can take the sunglasses off now."
No I can't, I have to go watch Dimensions in Time.
Just knowing that I'll never be able to experience this is annoying because I'm in bed and tomorrow I'll probably have forgotten about this video
Did this comment help you remember?

@•• yes
Tom's one take celebrations are always the best.
0:22 dont call me out like that bro.
Closing your right eye slightly and keeping your left eye as open as possible also creates this effect. Ever since I saw this video a year or two ago, whenever I see a shot in a movie or show that pans slowly I try this out haha. And it works surprisingly well!
